QUITE A TOME.......2007-01-22
This book is the very definition of comprehensive, this book really hashes out beautiful Guilded Age New York. It is to be lamented that so many of these gorgeous buildings are no longer extant, but at least these wonderful archival images are available. As you walk around NYC today, you see glimpses of the grandeur that once pervaded the city, but this book conjures up the ghosts of an Age of unimaginable wealth and unparalled craftsmanship. High recommended to one and all.
New York architecture in the late 1800s.......2001-11-18
With over 1100 pages, this book was so difficult to handle physically, that it hampered my enjoyment of this epic-length volume. On the other hand, the book is a bargain in terms of cents per page! Photos average more than one per page; however, the quality of photographic reproduction is frequently very disappointing (even when compared to Stern's 'New York 1900,' which also uses very old photographs). There are approximately 75 floor plans, with most page space used for the less-than-rivetting text. Chapters are divided by building type. A surprising amount of page space is consumed by illustrations of entries in architectural competitions (Union League Club and Cathedral of St. John the Divine).
I was disappointed........2000-01-04
This period was covered in New York 1900, which provided background material from 1876 and before. Although New York 1880 is longer than New York 1900, it seemed to me to be a padding of what had already been said in a more succinct and more readable way in the first book of the series (NY 1900).As for the length, New York 1880 badly needs an editor.
A Wonderful fabulous work of scholarship on New York City.......1999-09-22
While it is too heavy to lug around, NY 1880 is an eye popping journey into New York of 120 or so years ago. There are over 1,200 photographs and 99 pages of footnotes. Anyone interested in seeing what this wonderful city was like a generation before the First World War is strongly urged to grab this book. So much of what this book is about is no longer standing - churches, synagogues, clubs, apartments, etc.
Buy it!! This is the best of the 4 books in the series (NY 1880, NY 1900, NY 1930 and NY 1960) with NY 2000 to come in a few years.

A Wonderful Collection of Art.......2000-06-18
Rings is a wonderful compilation of art and artists in an incredibly unique collection. Each piece is discussed in order to help readers understand these contributions to the artistic world. This book is informative, asthetic and well worth the wait. I was fortunate enough to visit the exhibit in Atlanta and this is an incredible keepsake to remember it by.

Real men (and women) eat p___y.......2005-02-22
Mmmm, don't you just LOVE that cover? It makes my mouth water just looking at it. Anyway, during the time in life when I can relax with the girlfriend I am usually licking her sweet spot for as long as she wants. I know a couple of female friends right now whose men are a little reluctant to get down on them. I can see the hurt in their eyes about it and it makes me sad. Women LOVE to have the honey pot eaten, savored. I encourage the less than eager to understand the GOOD you are doing when you deign to her sex wishes. I would like to write some more but it's "snacktime". Buy this book now.

Wow!.......2003-07-08
Have purchased a few oral sex books and just didn't know what was missing. This book found it.
Didn't know what I was missing!.......2002-10-05
I have never really enjoyed this type of sex being done to me. Perhaps because I did not have the right person performing this well enough to please me. In searching out books on this subject I purchased Oral Caress because I would really like to be thrilled by someone doing a good job at this. After going through the book, my husband (especially) is now on his way to giving me "thrills" beyound what I thought could happen to me. Basically I know most men who enjoy doing this think they are "experts" in the field when in reality they could use a little help in how to please a woman. I live in a very cold state and I know I will now be warmed up with what we have learned from this book...:)
HAD WHAT I WANTED.......2002-03-30
I didn't buy this book for the photos. Would buy a slick girlie magazine if that's want I wanted. I didn't buy this book for lots of cute little names for a hundred bearly indistinguishable oral maneuvers. I've received enough oral stimulation from enough men to know what good cunnilingus is. Dr. Birch hits it right on the nose (well, anatomically a bit lower). He sticks to the basics, and believe me, there are a lot of men who never learned them! I happened to fall in love with a guy who needed encouragement, directions, and some good solid advice. I must admit, working the G Spot into his growing skill with cunnilingus was just what the doctor ordered. Great idea and for me, the best of all worlds.

Customer Reviews:
read it twice and decided to give it only 3 stars.......2007-09-02
I read this book and found I got more info on men more than women. Of course, the author is from Mars. He mostly like could only describe women how moody they are than giving "solutions to men on how to fix relationship". Maybe like he said, Men don't like people telling them how to fix things. Instead, he wrote more chapters on "Versuians only". I don't see a chapter noted "Marians only". All he wrote about is how moody women are and it is not men's fault. And, when men feel like "going back into their cave, women shouldn't bother or offer talk." He wrote on what Martian and Verusians shouldn't do. But, what we should do?? Very few recommandations.
I remember I read a review from a lady who bought John Gary' another book. She totally got disappointed that John Gary believes that maybe women can gave men a head when women don't feel too well for sex. Women don't only want love and a listener after a long day, she also wants some pampers and a massage as well.
John Gary, maybe you need to put yourself into women's shoes. Think about women's PMS days and suggest men know HOW to show their love instead of telling men "show your love". But too bad, men don't take suggestions anyways...
Great book, thanks!.......2006-03-15
I received the book right away and it was in great shape.
Good tips.......2004-05-26
Its a good book overall, Although it has on both, I think its oriented more on how to please a man. It should be equally done..
Truly Mars and Venus.......2004-03-17
I'm a 17 yr. old high school student that had to do a report on love, differences, and communication. My teacher suggested the other book, and Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, but the lazy student that i am, i went for the shorter version. But wow, this book is amazing, I'm so glad I read it, I've learned many things about men that i will be able to use throughout life. It really helped me understand somethings that had been going wrong even in my own relationship. Very good book, I would suggest it to anyone!
On the mark!.......2003-04-24
I make it a point to read the popular "relationship authors" because, as an author myself, it gives me a sense of perspective.
Mr. Gray's books are by far and away the most concise and entertaining, even if he does get a bit too serious at times. Regardless, the information contained is excellent and I highly recommend it.

Jane Wyman: A Biography
ASIN: 0934878684 |
Customer Reviews:
Good photographic overview of Jane Wyman's life and career.......2007-08-11
Jane Wyman has earned her footnote in American history as the first wife of President Ronald Reagan, but it should never be forgotten that she had a long and illustrious career as an actress in her own right, with the zenith, IMO, being her moving performance in "Johnny Belinda". She was also a strikingly beautiful woman who had her full share of glamour-girl roles, and in the 1980's went head-to-head with the women of "Dallas" and "Dynasty" on her own prime-time soap, "Falcon Crest". Lawrence Quirk, who has written many other books on old-time Hollywood and its performers, has assembled a fine "illustrated biography" (to borrow from the book's subtitle) with an excellent selection of black-and-white photographs from every stage of her life and career, accompanied by a well-written, sympathetic text. Definitely recommended.

Excellent resource.......2007-02-07
This book is long overdue and is an outstanding resource for a topic which is not discussed by physicans after cancer treatment. As a breast cancer educator and a breast cancer survivor I can tell you the changes that occur after surgery and treatment can be as devastating as the disease itself. This book is a frank discussion about those changes and there are excellent suggestions from cancer survivors. Every woman who has had surgery and treatment for breast cancer would benefit from this book and physicians would find this an superior resource for their patients.

Art, Not Just Skin.......2007-03-23
People who have tattoos put on their bodies have always fascinated me. Once, on my birthday, I took a trip into New York City--to the Museum of natural History--to see an exhibit on tattooing around the world. In spite of this fascination, why someone would want to permanently mark his (or her) body with ink is something I can't relate to. I would personally never do this myself.
When the subject turns to women getting tattoos, it turns my fascination and curiosity up a notch. Women do apply makeup, pluck their eyebrows, shave their bodies, and other such things to enhance their physical appearance. But a tattoo is forever. Once applied, it can only be removed with great difficulty. Why do some women want to add such permanent art to their bodies?
The Illustrated Woman is one of those books I find myself looking at often. The author and photographer, William Demichele, is a tattoo artist himself, and has created a unique assemblage of personal studies of tattooed women. His photograph technique is to photograph the women up close against a black background. I find it to be an effective way to showcase the body art on each woman. In addition, the women are, for the most part, looking directly into the camera's lens, heightening the interaction with the viewer. This is not mere voyeurism. Each woman challenges you to examine her body art seriously--to take her seriously.
I find the fact, that most of the women chose to be nude, interesting. Mr. Demichele didn't require it of them and left the degree of uncovering up to each individual woman. It's reasonable to think that people who get tattoos wish to show off their art, but the nudity these women displayed for the camera goes beyond that. To me, it displays honesty and courage. I also found the parts of their bodies they covered illustrative as well.
Another fact that fascinates me is the extent of many of the women's tattoos. One woman literally had her entire back done in a traditional Japanese carp pattern. This wasn't some tiny rose, done on an ankle on a whim, we're taking about. This was a significant commitment to body art, both in money and discomfort. Many of the other women had extensive body art as well.
Author Demichele has assembled a collection of portraits in The Illustrated Woman that is fascinating, striking, uncompromising, and--yes--beautiful. The juxtaposition of the innate beauty of the female form, covered in extensive inked artwork, never fails to elicit strong feelings in me as I view the plates. I'm sure this book will have the same effect on you as well.
Beautiful Women and Beautiful Tattoos.......2005-05-12
Invariably, when people peruse my tattoo book library, this is the book that they pull off the shelf the most. It is also, by far, the men's favorite. I also make sure to show it to women friends too though and some have actually gotten some great ideas from it. I'm waiting for Richard Todd to do the same thing some day since he also is amassing quite the collection at tattoo conventions.
Living art becomes a historical document.......2001-07-08
So often people think of tattooing as a dirty, unsanitary practice, when in reality it is just a way for people to express themselves both socially and emotionally in a manner not always accepted by mainstream society. Nowhere else does a book better illustrate this than in The Illustrated Woman. The photographs are tastefully done with a flare that makes you almost understand why the women decided to adorne there skin in such a manner. This book is definately a must own for any tattoo enthusiast or anyone interested in getting their first tattoo and looking for some ideas.
BEAUTIFUL TATTOOS.......2001-03-04
I had the pleasure of purchasing this book directly from Shotsie Gorman at his studio, Shotsie's. This is a very nicely done book, with well taken photos of some beautiful tattoos. If your looking for a book you can enjoy again and again, this is it. If you're a woman looking for some ideas for a tattoo this is also a good reference book.. If you're a guy that enjoys looking at tastefully done photos of women with beautiful tattoos, this book is for you. All in all it's a great book for everyone.
Essential Information on Tattoos for the Un-Inked.......1999-02-07
This book was photographed with care and respect for the subjects. Amazing designs, Wonderous colors and "real" people illustrating the diversity and individuality of the Human Race. Sensing the true spirit and story behind many of the designs, I walked away knowing there is a legacy left by these "Inkies": a rich, tapestry of experiences, both Sad and Happy. "Every Picture Tells a Story". all due to the Photographers' Art.
