The life safety code handbook is an extemely valuable resource. The contents were clearly organized and allowed me to follow the code through a contract document set and have no hang ups when the set was reviewed by the city.

Terrific book for learning how to paint miniatures (great step-by-step instructions with illustrations,) and also learning the interesting history of the medium. Although I myself am a long-time artist of miniatures, I picked up a lot of tips and tricks.

A Bygone Era Revistited.......2000-03-21
This is not a "social history" of mid-20th century nudist magazines, but is instead a sampler: the book contains reprints of actual articles that appeared in the various magazines of this type. Strange as it may seem to anyone under 40, there was a time when photos of full frontal nudity were equated with the vilest pornography. For the first 15 years or so of its existence (until about 1970), neither Playboy magazine nor any of its imitators printed photos containing visible pubic hair. Though never attaining the social acceptability of National Geographic (or even coming close), the nudist magazines of this era filled much the same niche: providing male readers with photos of nude females in a non-sexual, non-pornographic context, that, for the most part, successfully thwarted the efforts of vice squads and the plethora of self-appointed censors.
Generally, these magazines accurately portrayed nudist life. Again, the under-40 crowd may not be aware that traditional nudist/naturist establishments were NOT similar to the clothing-optional resorts which abound now, which in many cases are little more than "swingers' clubs." Rather, they were (and are) self-styled health resorts where overt sexuality was forbidden.
On the other hand, the magazines understandably were designed more to promote the lifestyle then to portray it accurately. "Exhibit A" in support of my statement has to be the preponderance of females in the photos. Those who have engaged in any sort of "clothing optional" activity are aware that males constitute about 55-60% of the participants (while in the Bible Belt and other less-enlightened areas, the disparity is even higher). Yet, the overwhelming number of photos in these magazines are of women, typically under 40. There are of course photos of nude men, though typically depicted with women---often the men being in the background. But, understandable, since the target audience was heterosexual men.
But, every era has its witches to hunt---and to burn---and our "enlightened" era is no different. Let the buyer beware: this book contains photos of nude children. The same under-40 crowd should know that in years past, it was not considered shocking for pre-pubescent children (especially boys) to be nude in a family context, in full view of adults and older siblings. Pictures taken with the family Brownie camera of the kids skinny-dipping could be taken to the local drugstore for developing with little fear even of a negative comment. Nowadays, dad would be arrested as a pedophile! Obviously, the photos of nude teens and pre-teens were published at the time to further illustrate the "family" aspect of nudism. Pedophilia was the furthest from the publishers' minds. But, times change.
It was the changing times that caused their demise. With the advent of commercially-available pornographic magazines and movies in the 1970s, there was no longer a market for these magazines. Too bad.

I think the information is outdated (but interesting). The pictures are not typical Ed Lange pictures (I think they were air-brushed). I remember Sundial as THE best nudists magazine.

Good intermediate micro.......2007-04-24
This book is very well structured and makes your troubled economist life easier. You definitely need math knowledge but Nicholson explains difficult concepts in a masterful and understandable manner, so the ideas are easier to understand. I would say it is between Varian and Mas Colell. The first part is abundant in relevant examples (it somehow dwindles after) and the questions at the end of the chapters are quite useful.

It is very good textbook to learn microeconomics with intuitions and methodology. But, some people are comparing this book with Mas Colell. Nonsense! Mas Colell is a PhD level, pretty technical, "heavy duty" book. This book is an intermediate level book for senior undergrads or master students. On the other hand, Binger&Hofmann's Microeconomics with Calculus book is better then this, in my opinion. It has less story more information. This book spends lots of lines to explain some small points which is boring for someone who should know these stories before starting graduate studies. But it is more comprehensive than baby Varian. Some departments are using Pyndick's book, but I didn't use it. I believe that Binger&Hofmann is the best in this category if you wanna learn Microeconomics using mathematical tools.

Very Good Overview of Micro Theory.......2006-11-10
After using this book for a math-intensive micro theory course, I would heartily recommend Nicholson's text, which is written clearly with relevant examples and straightforward, useful problems at the end of each chapter. The book is very math-intense and requires a good knowlege of multivariable calculus, but since the reader is probably buying this book for a class, he or she most likely already has the mathematics background necessary. Thumbs up.
Not such an easy read.......2006-10-18
Okay book, not the best read, but better than the Mas-Collel green books. This book gives a lot of info on theory but I thought it lacked wrt practical (applied examples). Used for a graduate level course in Micro Econ. My particular course is very hard (this class serves both graduate and PhD Finance students) so needless to say, I am ordering the workbook to help me survive!

I have the first edition (2001).
Despite the fact that I think some "axioms" of economics are based on muddy, suspect foundations, I gave 5 stars to this book because it is a FUNNY and very didactic introduction to microeconomics. So that, if you want to grasp the main principles of this area I think you will have an excelent "companion" in your hands. Most examples are very practical and cool.
Their macroeconomics book is also very didactic. I think it is a characteristic of the authors.

In this study guide, Hall and Lieberman provide an excellent accompaniment to their brilliant text. All the exercises are very clear, as is the answer key, which gives one the opportunity to see where one went wrong in a particular concept. The scope of the study guide is exactly the same as that of the book. Basically, if you can do everything in the guide, you have mastered their concepts.
