3 out of 5 stars a wealth of ideas.......2000-08-03

I got this book from the point of view of graphic design, and found it very rewarding. The book pays attention to the details of buildings, and the overall needs of the client, discussing how they arranged structures to fit the landscape, and compliment them, or how they created traffic thru-flow of people, how they encourage people into the buildings and around them. There are so many ideas in this book, it's well worth getting your hands on.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2000-03-31

I expected a book full of pictures of actual buildings. Instead I opened the book to find computer renderings and models of buildings. There were only a couple of pictures of existing architecture. Morphosis is great. They have some of the most brilliant architects working for them, but the book did not show me the work they are famous for.

5 out of 5 stars Superb and sensual images from a master........2007-05-17

Paul Jasmin is one of my favorite photographers so maybe I am biased in his favor. I even began a Flickr group "Inspired by Paul Jasmin" ([..])

Paul Jasmin is a photographer of the young and beautiful in Hollywood and Southern California. His work is characterized by rich tones, deep shadows, gorgeous hues and with an emphasis on people portraits and naturalism.... not things.

What is the photograph inspired by Jasmin?

It is a romantic and a melancholic artist.
It is the lone person in the lens.
It is late afternoon or early morning when the sun is gentle and the indoor light is dim and golden.
Its the lovely young woman on the unmade bed with the light peeking through the Venetian blinds.
It can be anywhere in the world where love and loneliness coexist.

5 out of 5 stars Youth Lost in Dreams, Vanity, and Solitude.......2005-03-08

HOLLYWOOD COWBOY is a perfect companion work to Paul Jasmin's LOST ANGELES. Jasmin is a sensitive observer whose camera seems to gravitate toward romantically inclined casual portraits of beautiful people in enchanted environs. Here is a full mixture of males and females, nude and clothed, all seeming to have that intransigence of the private or public desire to 'become' in Hollywood. There are actors and actresses, models, hustlers, loners, and crowd leaners captured by Jasmin's dramatic focus in moments of ultimate vulnerability.

Though not all of the subjects for these photographs are what we would consider 'beautiful', there is an innocence that is beguiling. Whether captured inside decorous or smarmy rooms or out on the streets and parks, these people find their way into our own dream factories, whether or not those dreams ever were realized or not. A beautiful collection with excellent color and black and white reproduction. Grady Harp, March 05

        5 out of 5 stars Lost Angeles.......2004-07-05

If you like this book , his new book (Lost Angeles) is going to blow your mind. Trust me.

        5 out of 5 stars Dreamy & Very Moody!.......2002-03-30

This is a beautiful book! I was so anxious to see Paul Jasmin's long-awaited first book, having recently heard so much about this remarkable photographer. Over the years, I have researched many photographers, but wasn't familiar with Paul's work at all. Well, I now have another favorite photographer. These are stunningly seductive, moody, romantic, and erotic images, to name only a few feelings that came to me while viewing this sampling of his work. These images are taken from the 1950's right up to 2001. A great selection that covers male and female nudes, portraits of friends, people of the entertainment & art world, fashion shoots and peaceful travel images.

Jasmin states, "I still dream in the 1950's", well, lucky for us. You get a feeling from these photographs that you don't get from the current photographers images, and that's a feeling of innocence. A time when sex was more innocent and much more sensual. A long time friend of Bruce Weber, you can see the influence in a few of these photos. Paul Jasmin have appeared in many leading fashion magazines such as Arena, Vogue, W, and L'uomo Vogue. There are three informative and touching essays by Sofia Coppola, Grazia D'Annunzio, and critic Nicolai Ouroussoff. They help to highlight & explain Jasmin's life and career. Arena Editions has again published another striking book on quality paper, that is handsomely designed.

This is a rare opportunity to enjoy a photographer who exposes us to a time that is now lost, a time of innocence and youthful carefree ways. I really enjoyed this collection of his images. Highly Recommended!

        Book Description

The romance of the Old West remains strong, even more than a century after the heyday of cowboys and gunfighters. This all-new title explores the romance of that bygone era, focusing on the guns that the legends of the West—good guys and bad guys, real and fictional characters—carried with them.

Profiles of more than 50 gunslingers, half from the Old West and half from Hollywood, include a brief biography of each gunfighter, along with the guns they carried. Fascinating stories about the TV and movie celebrities of the 1950s and 1960s detail their guns and the skill—or lack thereof—they displayed.

Stunning color photos depict each firearm in glorious detail. These guns range from custom-crafted high-end arms to non-functioning gimmicky props.

        • Firearms carried by more than 50 real and fictional characters of the Old West

        • Emphasis on the TV and movie stars of the 1950s and 1960s

        • Modern and historic photos show each of the firearms

This book is about 1/3 on old gunfighters of the old west and 2/3 on the "B" Western cowboys. It is interesting to read but you should realize it is mostly movies.

1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing Book.......2004-04-20

This is the most disappointing book I have read in a long time. There is very little about the actual guns of the gunfighters and the few facts presented are very general and broad brush. The author obviously is a fan of old Hollywood westerns as half of his "gunfighters" are in fact only Hollywood actors! He also includes several modern gun magazine writers. Worse yet, many of the noteable real western gunfighters are ignored. The editing is also poor. Several photos of the same gun appear in more than one place in the book. Spend your money elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars A wealth of hidden gun lore.......2003-08-08

The Guns Of The Gunfighters: Lawmen, Outlaws & Hollywood Cowboys by firearms historian and expert Doc O'Meara, is a meticulous and detailed survey of the weaponry carried by some of the most famous (and infamous) gunmen of the Wild West and the silver screen, including Wyatt Earp, Annie Oakley, Roy Rogers, and many, many more. Black-and-white photographs, extensive attention to detail, and a wealth of hidden gun lore make The Guns Of The Gunfighters a superb giftbook for gun buffs, Western American history enthusiasts, and those having a special interest in Hollywood portrayals of the Old West.

4 out of 5 stars Cotton Candy for the soul!.......2003-04-29

This volume by noted gun writer Doc O'Meara is a fun and informative work for fans of the Westeren, Gun Buffs and anybody who enjoyed Saturday shoot em ups. The writing is bright and jaunty, like the subject matter. Well documented, and a treasure trove of beautiful photographs of the Gunfighters and their tools of the trade. A good reference volume sure to attract attention, the books suceeds on all levels.

5 out of 5 stars Superb narration about the early years of motion pictures........1999-05-27

Filled with adventure, romance and intrigue coupled with its historical setting this book tells the story of the early background players in motion pictures. Although it revolves around the authors father, cowboy, stuntman Jack Montgomery the tales she tells are indicative of a way of life that are long gone as are most of the background players of the golden era of western movies. It tells of the "real" cowboy migration of the western plains to become the "reel" cowboys of motion pictures and the code that they brought with them. This book will make you laugh and cry; it will fill you with excitement; provide insight to the disdain for human and animal care by early Hollywood. This book answers the question, "Where did they come from and how did they do it."

If you went to a big rodeo in the 1940s, you might have seen Gene Autry singing and jumping his horse, Champ, through a flaming hoop. In the same era, familiar rodeo personalities like Hoot Gibson, Texas Rose Bascom, Slim Pickens and Ben Johnson could be seen in movies or television shows. At a rodeo in the 1960s, you might have seen Lorne Greene and Dan Blocker acting out a skit from their hit television show Bonanza. This reference book provides career profiles of both types of performers who crossed over between acting and cowboying in the period from the 1930s to the 1970s, when Hollywood and the rodeo circuit were closely linked. The first part, “Rodeo Personalities with a Hollywood Connection,” traces the careers of notable rodeo stars who also appeared on film or television. The next two sections detail the rodeo appearances of stars better known for their work on the screen (whether small or silver); one of these two sections focuses on performers who tended to appear solo, while the other focuses on famous casts, such as the folks of Bonanza or Gunsmoke. A fourth section alphabetically lists rodeo-related films. Appendices present further information on golden age rodeo personalities, rodeos presenting western stars, and eleven special rodeos distinguished by such features as size, prestige and Western star power.

            Book Description

Academics have generally dismissed Hollywood's cowboy and Indian movies—one of its defining successful genres—as specious, one-dimensional, and crassly commercial. In Shooting Cowboys and Indians, Andrew Brodie Smith challenges this simplistic characterization of the genre, illustrating the complex and sometimes contentious process by which business interests commercialized images of the West.

Tracing the western from its hazy silent-picture origins in the 1890s to the advent of talking pictures in the 1920s, Smith examines the ways in which silent westerns contributed to the overall development of the film industry.

Focusing on such early important production companies as Selig Polyscope, New York Motion Picture, and Essanay, Smith revises current thinking about the birth of Hollywood and the establishment of Los Angeles as the nexus of filmmaking in the United States. Smith also reveals the role silent westerns played in the creation of the white male screen hero that dominated American popular culture in the twentieth century.

Illustrated with dozens of historic photos and movie stills, this engaging and substantive story will appeal to scholars interested in Western history, film history, and film studies as well as general readers hoping to learn more about this little-known chapter in popular filmmaking.

                  Book Description

A fifteen-hundred-mile horseback ride to win a bet, to prove a point, to honor tradition? It sounds like a tale straight out of the Wild West: a man, a horse, a grueling ride halfway across the country. The bet is between Jimmy Wakely, Hollywood singing cowboy, and Rolla Goodnight, Oklahoma cattle rancher and cousin of legendary cattleman Charles Goodnight. Frank “Pistol Pete” Eaton, Rolla’s lifelong friend, provides the Osage Indian pony and a Colt .45. Rolla’s twenty-year-old grandson, Jerry Van Meter, is the man they are betting on.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent history that comes alive.......2000-01-10

Dickinson has done a skillful job of bringing twentieth century history alive through the life of an Oklahoma individual whose saga is fascinating. Well-written, I found this book to be a great way to enjoy popular history and learned many things I didn't know about the recent past and the people who moved through it.

5 out of 5 stars Hollywood the Hard Way.......1999-12-06

Amazing true adventure story; a real page turner!

If your grandfather bet a Hollywood movie star cowboy that you could make a little ride to prove that real cowboys still existed and the ways of the old west were not dead, would you do it? Now imagine that in order to win you had to ride a horse 1500 miles from Oklahoma to Hollywood, CA in 50 days, would you? Oh yeah, and throw in barbwire fences, raging rivers, rattlesnakes, murderous robbers, a gunfight, suspicious police, Apaches, and getting lost in the Mojave Desert. Could you? Well, real life hero Jerry van Meter and his Osage indian pony, Fan, almost died doing it in 1946 as the old west was disappearing under post WWII development. He never profited by his adventure. In fact, his grandfather, cowboy legend Rolla Goodnight, never even told him what he bet!

Jerry was barely 20 years old when he made the ride. He is now 73 years old and lives in Kalispell, Montana. By chance, writer Patti Dickinson heard about Jerry when she stopped for a hamburger one day in Montana. It took her a year to track him down and verify his story. She tells it in a straight-ahead style that makes you feel that you are riding along with Jerry and Fan all the way. Thank you Ms. Dickinson for finding and preserving a fascinating part of our American history.

5 out of 5 stars a rip-roaring "ride" depicting the end of the cowboy era.......1999-09-24

what a terrific read about a young man becoming an adult as he treks from oklahoma to hollywood just after world war II to win a bet made by his uncle. shades of the poingnacy we saw in "lonely are the brave" to be sure, but this book inspires the reader anew as the young man and his horse face complications, danger and exhaustion before their ultimate triumph. there is a wonderful built-in nostalgia given the twilight of the cowboy era depicted here but the story remains both accessible and relevant in today's complex technological world. even with its simplicity of story, you won't be able to put this book down. this is a sure-fire winner; don't miss it!

5 out of 5 stars A cowboy's wager is honored by his grandson--the hard way........1999-09-02

Oklahoma, 1945. Rolla Goodnight and Rolla's best buddy Frank "Pistol Pete" Eaton are arguing with Jimmy Wakely, the Hollywood picture cowboy and Monogram Movie Star. Jimmy says the cowboy way of life is as good as dead.

Rolla and Frank know better. They make a small bet with Jimmy: It used to take three months to drive drive a herd of cattle along the Goodnight-Loving Trail between the Brazos and Denver--about fifteen hundred miles. Hollywood was about the same distance. Why, a good cowboy could make it, on horseback, in fifty days. They volunteer Jerry Van Meter, Rolla's grandson for the job.

Jerry honors his grandfather's bet, mounts Fan, his Osage indian pony and heads for Hollywood-the Hard Way.

With only a compass and map to guide him across rangeland, mountains and desert, young Jerry meets and defeats life-threatening danger from man and beast, the elements, loneliness and hunger, becoming a man in the process.

The author vividly parallels Jerry's journey with the newspaper headlines of the day, carrying the reader back to a time when this nation was on the verge of technology, a time when life was still simple and a man's word was his bond.

A true story. A great read.

5 out of 5 stars A page turner that will appeal to all ages and gender........1999-08-22

I couldn't put this book down. The author has an excellent writing style which makes this a page turner. The true-life story of Jerry Van Meter's 1500 mile horse ride to Hollywood in 50 days, to win a bet his Grandfather made with a Hollywood star, captured the heart of this reader. I snuggled in my bed and didn't get up until I finished the book. Patti Dickinson has a fluid writing style, with an exceptional ability to capture the physical, emotional and spiritual essence of a young man's struggle to overcome his secret feelings of inadequacy in a family known for their strong character. He accomplishes this and more on his journey to Hollywood. I would recommend this book to all ages and gender because it just inspires you to walk through your fears, and accomplish your goal, for none other than yourself.
