Book Description
The best-selling text emphasizes the relationships of humans to other living things. Human Biology remains user friendly; relevancy and pedagogy are among its strengths. In this edition, as in previous editions, each chapter presents the topic clearly, simply, and distinctly so that students will feel capable of achieving an adult level of understanding. Detailed, high-level scientific data and terminology are not included because Dr. Mader believes that true knowledge consists of working concepts rather than technical facility. Technology also plays a greater role in teaching and the Online Learning Center found at http://www.mhhe.com/biosci/genbio/maderhuman7 provides professors and students alike with an abundance of resources.

Book Description
Metaheuristics for Hard Optimization comprises of three parts. The first part is devoted to the detailed presentation of the four most widely known metaheuristics: • the simulated annealing method, • tabu search, • the evolutionary algorithms, • ant colony algorithms. Each one of these metaheuristics is actually a family of methods, of which the essential elements are discussed. In the second part, the book presents some other less widespread metaheuristics, then, extensions of metaheuristics and some ways of research are described . The problem of the choice of a metaheuristic is posed and solution methods are discussed. The last part concentrates on three case studies from telecommunications, air traffic control, and vehicle routing.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty shallow presentation..........2007-06-10
Pretty shallow presentation of basic metaheuristics. For example, Simulated Annealing is covered on 20 pages, with 10 pages of examples presented without details. There is no even a block diagram of SA method or pseudocode. The reader should not expect that he/she will know how to implement SA, not saying about various pracitcal issues.
This regards almost all presented heuristics: some high-level view with some philosophy and no technicalities. Controversial is including multiobjective optimization in this book. Multiobjective optimization is pretty standard OR problem, definitely not "hard" and solved using standard OR techniques.
I don't know what is the audience this book is addressing.
"Theory" part covers about half of the book. The second part, "applications" seems to be a collection of scientific papers published by the authors elswehere. This part is more interesting, but first part doesn't give sufficient theoretical background to understand the application section.
I will definitely keep this book on my shelf, but if somebody wants to study metaeuristics, I would suggest book by Michalewicz and Fogel "How to Solve It: Modern Heuristics". Or better, both books could be considered as a combo: Michalewicz book as theoretical and technical introduction, the reviewed book as collction of sample non-trivial problems

Great works.......2005-10-25
I recently visited Monterey and upon my return home, I became obsessed with Steinbecks novels as many of them focus on this beautiful city. This collection is a great reminder of lifes ups and downs, friendship, and perserverance. Very easy to read and relate to.
Steinbeck's classics delivered in a wonderful manner.......2005-08-26
I purchased this book because it was the first place where I read my favorite story, Of Mice and Men. It was delivered within three days of purchase. I am very very satisfied in the book, and the experience
Some pretty amazing Steinbeck magic.......2001-12-15
This volume contains some of the earlier works of John Steinbeck. Steinbeck was a master of the English language and had the talent of using the least amount of words to convey the greatest amount of emotions. His stories are moving without being cheap. He is compassionate and had keen insight into his characters and the world at large.
Reviewing each story that appears in this volume is beyond the scope of this review, and you should check out that various titles individually. I will just say a few words about the collection in general. Steinbeck's earlier works are, in my opinion, better than his later, more ambitious works. While his later works can be viewed as some sort of social criticism, these earlier works are simply his personal salute to human nature. Steinbeck knew a basic truth about writing - if you want to write a great book, before you have a great theme, make sure you have great characters, and the rest will follow.
Steinbeck is both profound and very accessible at the same time, which I think is the trademark of a great author. He wrote for ordinary people (unlike, say, Joyce), and at the same time his works are complex enough to be appreciated by scholars. Whatever group you belong to, you will not regret reading this book.
steinbeck at his best in Mice and Men.......2000-10-01
This wonderful novella tells the ineffably sad tale of two itinerant farm laborers in Depression California. George Milton is a small wiry man, his traveling companion, Lennie Small, is a giant, but a simpleton. The two travel from farm to farm, one step ahead of trouble as Lennie's incredible strength and feeble brain continually land them in trouble. Other farm hands are struck by the rarity of finding such men traveling as partners, but Lennie and George have a dream, a dream of a better life. As soon as they can raise $600 they can buy a farm and be their own bosses and Lennie will get to raise the rabbits that he loves, but has a tendency to accidentally crush. Unfortunately, trouble awaits at the farm where they are headed. The ranch owner's son, Curley, can't control his new bride who has "the eye" or his own temper which flares up whenever she starts flirting with the hired hands.
This is one of those books you had to read in 9th grade, largely because it was by a famous author and it's short enough that teachers figure students might actually finish it. If you haven't read it since, give it another try. The relationship between George and Lennie is one of the most beautiful, and oft imitated, in all of literature and the themes of love, friendship, loyalty, courage and the dream of a better life are both timeless and compelling.
GRADE: A+
Of mice and men.......2000-08-09
I read Of Mice And Men because of a school requirement. The themes of Friendship, Loneliness and dreams feature strongly in this book. I felt that I could relate mostly to the theme of friendship, I like, Lennie and George rely on my friends to help and guide me along the way. In this sense I felt a connection with the plot. At the beginning of the book I was not very interested, and first I didn't like it at all, but towards the middle and end I started to be more interested, and I found that I had to finish it as soon as possible. Now, I feel that I have a stronger knowledge of friendship and trust and the limits I would go to for any one of my friends. Besides the book was good, I wouldn't recommend it, to people who don't like to read.

Customer Reviews:
The Strike.......2007-07-04
Young Jim Nolan has been drifting along, but in 1930s California he finds both a radical party and a cause - a strike of apple pickers, provoked by the experienced Mac. We see the plight of the labourers, the injustices they face and have experienced, and the ruthlessness of the landowners.
I thought this was an excellent, hard-hitting novel about the brutalities faced by the labouring classes. Its observations might stand up even today, although one could argue that exploitation has changed its location rather than its character. It's important though to read the book carefully, because it's not a simple hymn to the virtues of the labouring classes or the Communist party. Far from it - Steinbeck sees manipulation and exploitation everywhere - in his own way, Mac is as guilty of using the strikers (and Jim) for his own ends just as much as the landowners are using them for theirs.
This is a gripping and rewarding piece of work. The characters are well-drawn, the plot is interesting and pacey and the more reflective passages are worthy of thought.

Great Steinbeck.......2006-12-24
I am a huge Steinbeck fan, and have always been. There are a some of his works that I appreciate more than others. Steinbeck captures the heart and the soul of the poverty stricken, the worker bees that keep the social wheels turning. He knows their mind and their emotions like he has been there with them and he believes what they have to say is of value. He brings a warmth and almost acceptance to the idea of being a Communist in America.
Steinbeck's Bait-and-Switch: A Good Writer Fails to Act.......2006-09-27
I'm perhaps the only Steinbeck lover not to have yet read "Grapes of Wrath" or "East of Eden." Instead I have focused on "Of Mice and Men" and his lesser known works, such as "To a God Unknown" and, my personal favorite, "Pastures of Heaven." I've been enamored with his ability to vividly craft characters in particular.
When I began reading "In Dubious Battle," it appeared the most engaging of all Steinbeck's work. Telling the story of American Communist party workers Jim and Mac, it begins with the story of hardscrabble Jim initiating himself into Mac's radical cell. There is a great (and misleading) sense of intrigue - Mac and Jim travel by boxcar, work secretly through letters, go from secret contact to contact and finally arrive among disgruntled orchard workers. Early on, the pace is fast, exciting, and engaging.
Suddenly, Steinbeck simply fails to deliver, leaving the reader wondering when he's going to pick up the pace again. After Jim and Mac slowly initiate a worker's strike, I expected the sense of excitement to continue. It simply never does.
Summary of "In Dubious Battle" - Workers get mad. Workers get tired. Workers get mad. Workers get tired. Workers get mad. Workers get tired.
The rest of the book mostly concerns Jim and Mac talking - and talking - and talking - and talking. And while their philosophical chats are mildly interesting at first, they simply repeat themselves for the rest of the book. Most of the action takes place in the dark or far away from the narration, and most of the story simply concerns the strikers bickering over petty nonsense...
...and eating. Steinbeck must have been peckish while writing this story, because at least a good 25% of the story concerns finding, eating, and (worst of all) TALKING about food. There is plenty of action that Steinbeck could have shown during the story, but for some reason he prefers to focus on Jim and Mac endlessly walking from tent to tent in their encampment, discussing whatever comes to mind.
Steinbeck's sense of intrigue and social injustice is worth reading the first few chapters. But I advise any reader of "In Dubious Battle" to take this course - after the strike is initiated, simply set the book down. You won't miss anything. Nothing of great import happens, and only a very few memorable characters ever surface, and they are lost among the sea of forgettable faces.
I suppose now I'll give "Grapes of Wrath" a go. Perhaps if it isn't one of his "greats," it isn't worth reading.
Steinbeck's finest work .......2006-08-16
It is one book i read over and over. This and the Grapes of wrath should be must reading in High schools. (however the way this contry is being attacked by our home grown anti-intellectual fundamentalists I fear this won't happen anytime soon)
"Man hates himself".......2006-03-16
When I read a novel I never over analyze it or try to read between the lines or ponder the symbolism of different objects, I just read the book and try to enjoy the story. The main reason is because my brain is the size of a Fig Newton (but chewier) and also because I really don't care. I read for enjoyment not to blow an o-ring agonizing about the philosophical conclusion of the whole thing.
That bit of useless ranting over, I really enjoyed this book. Steinbeck has such a seemingly effortless way of making everyday events so exciting and touching to read about.
Mac and Jim are two Communists who get jobs as apple pickers then quickly earn some of the work leaders trust and start edging the already angry workers toward a Valley wide strike.
That's really about it, but as with everything I've read by Steinbeck it has a profound feeling of humanity and beauty that I can't explain.
