Expert Advice.......2006-02-25
This is an excellent starting point for the beginner. It builds a proper base in a very practical, hands on way. Favretti is a well-known expert in Southern historic garden circles. He's created historic landscapes himself and comes at his subject with a great deal of experience.
Book Description
Historic house museums can be found in nearly every city in the United States and Canada. These are the homes of the earliest settlers, statesmen, frontiersmen, great writers, artists, architects, and industrial magnates. These are the places, carefully saved and preserved, that represent a cultural heritage. Despite their popularity, it is not uncommon to find museums that are in poor repair, their collections neglected and their staffs grossly overworked. Many are run by well-meaning and hard-working volunteers who have little or no professional training. Often they survive on shoestring budgets and are able to present only limited programs. Serving both as a hands-on guide and reference, this book examines these problems, offering practical advice and solutions which can be easily implemented. Its useful "lessons" include governance, where to find help, care of collections, conservation, security, and interpretation--all designed to increase the professionalism of the historic house museum.

Historic House Museums.......2006-02-20
In historic house museums, the author provided useful information and tips for the operation of a small museum on a shoestring budget. The authors extensive experience in the museum industry is evident from the suggestions offered. Many resources were listed for the museum staff to consider, however there are no web addresses which severely limits the usefulness of the book.
Better than string and tape.......2001-11-10
I selected this book for a report for a museum studies class -- and because I volunteer at a small "historic house museum". Because such museums often operate with meager staff and an even more meager budget, I expected the book to be something of the "How-to-do-an-exhibition-with-string-and-Scotch-tape" genre. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that, on the contrary, the author presented what seem to be the currently-accepted professional museum standards, with suggestions as to how the small historic house museum can rise to meet them. I was equally pleasantly surprised to find suggestions throughout the book that the museums also recognize their limitations and if they find that they can't meet minimum standards, to consider turning over their collections to an institution that can care for them properly.
Information included in the book covers the soup-to-nuts, from the mission statement to housekeeping and with a few minor exceptions (and one surprisingly larger one), the information on caring for the house and items in the collections is virtually identical to that which has been presented to us, by guest professional lecturers, in our grad school classes. One small suggestion which seems to conflict with what I have frequently read and been told was the author's suggestion to use clear nail polish as a base coat in marking objects -- something we were told not to do. The other thing that I would have liked to see left out of the section on cleaning chandeliers was to put several layers of padding and a piece of plywood on a dining room table (if made of "hardwood and in stable condition") beneath the chandelier...then "place a step ladder of suitable size on top of the plywood in order to reach the chandelier". Not on MY dining room table you won't!
Other than that very surprising bit of information, I found the book to be an invaluable, thorough and professional reference that is going to be a permanent reference at our small museum -- and it is even printed on acid-free paper, for a longer life!

A must read for architectural preservationists........1998-08-07
It's the "how to" guide for both amateur and professional architectural preservationists. An easy to follow, well documented manual for anyone interested in listing a building in the National Register of Historic Places. An important tool for architects and historians. And, its well written, too.
Book Description
A lighthouse standing majestically on a scenic shoreline conjures images of heroic sailors safely guided to port. But which lighthouse is it and what is its history? Here is a guide to identifying 161 of North America’s most famous beacons. Each entry includes a full-page color photograph opposite a smaller historical image, a brief history, construction facts, a schematic of the floor plan, and notable technical features and specs. Lighthouses include Portland Head, Boston Harbor, Cape Hatteras, Grosse Point, Cape Blanco, and Point SurPerfect. Endorsed by the American Lighthouse Foundation, this take-along guide can be used for coastal or Great Lakes driving vacations, from Newfoundland to Southern California, where each featured beacon can be easily identified and fully enjoyed.

One of the best lighthouse books I've seen.......2007-05-07
Lots of good information on lighthouse background, lots of pictures and let's you know if it is open to the public. I will be using it as a reference.
"It's better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.".......2006-05-08
Is there anyone who is not fascinated by the sight of a lighthouse? Growing up in Nova Scotia, lighthouses were as common a sight as a post office, church or a fire station. All through the years, whenever I was travelling,I always made a point of looking for lighthouses and spending a little time with them.I often thought it would be fun to really "get into" lighthouses, making a special effort to search them out ,read up on the history and things that have happened in the area, maybe sketch or photograph them, talk with the locals, and on and on. I imagine there are people who do just that, but surprisingly,I have never encountered any of them in my travels. As an avid Birder,I naturally gravatite to them in my search for birds. Over the years ,I've seen many. To say which is my favorite is difficult. I guess the answer that Roger Tory Peterson,North America's most famous Birdwatcher, gave when asked,"what is your favorite bird?" His reply was;"the one I'm looking at ,at the time."; applies just as well for lighthouses.
I guess I'll just have to take lighthouses as I come upon them, because with all my other intreests, there's just not enough time to go around.
Being a Birder ,and familiar with Field Guides,I was very happy to find this Guide for lighthouses. So much so,I bought one for my friend, who is much more "into" them than myself. Needless to say.he was thrilled to get it.
For anyone who is fascinated by lighthouses all over the US and Canada,I can tell you now ,you'll want it. The book is excellently constructed, was published in 2005,will last a long time, and won't go out of date, simply because they're not constructing any new ones. Several hundred sites are covered and the Guide is loaded with beautiful, clear photographs. I have seen many coffee table type books on lighthouses, but never such a comprehensive one as this; it's loaded with information.

Not bad for america.......1998-09-27
Good source for help in working with older properties, although a bit too flip. Generally European sources are more informed than USA but this gives good references and sources which is what most private individuals need. It is less usefull for professionals such as architects & designers. Even here because architectural and design education in the states is more geared towards large scale developement and not so much to restoration / renovation this reference is usefull. Good for usa names and sources, but suggest that european references etc. are better in terms of specific details and construction.

Good idea Good book.......2004-08-14
I would disagree with the previous reviewer's comments about this book. The book is well researched, well written, well documented, and well put together. I agree that the publisher should have used better paper and the illustrations that are oriented sideways are a distraction. But they are labelled correctly. Maybe the reviewer from Georgia thinks that the London Guarantee Building is in London not Chicago. Or maybe he has not seen the Auditorium Building tower from the west as it is shown in the book. Are there sour grapes between the lines here on the part of our reviewer from the South??
For someone interested in a serious study of preservation as an integral part of the re-making of the American city and as a part of a vital public policy process, rather than a process driven by legalistic drivel and innept stylistic analysis, then this book is indeed complete and comprehensive. For the preservationist who wants to do no more than revive what remains of Decatur,Georgia (I think there is a bandshell remaining) this book is of little value. For a person who wants to link his or her work in historic preservation to a critical dialogue about what makes vital urban settings, this is an important book to buy and well worth the price.
Great idea--poor execution.......2002-12-23
This book is definitely needed in the field of historic preservation; however, this edition is so poorly executed that I would advise against purchasing it, particularly at the full retail price... The Figures are sometimes mislabelled, and the descriptions of them within the body of the text often do not match what is actually diagrammed. The photographs are all black and white, and are frequently too dark to demonstrate the architectural feature being described. I found the errors very distracting, not to mention disconcerting in what purports to be "the most complete and expert resource you can find." I believe Mr. Irwin has written a valuable book, but I wish I had waited for the second edition.

19th century farmer's diary with 20th century photos.......2003-03-30
This little book is beautifully produced with exquisite photos of an old barn taken by master photographer Szarkowski. The accompanying excerpts from Philo Blinn's 19th century are both poignant and evocative of life in Columbia County New York. Philo Blinn was just an ordinary farmer, but he had a way with words that make his life and that of his neighbors come to life.
