5 out of 5 stars Still Great After 100 Years.......2000-11-30

It seems hard to believe that I, or anyone, could possibly dare add to the body of praise (or criticism) of this stunning collection of articles completed by Louis Sullivan right after the turn of last century. Remarkably, even though written by an architect, this work has the beauty, form, and flow of the poetry of deep thought about lessons we can learn from nature - with barely a word about architecture. This book is a must for the romantic. A stimulating and fresh connection spanning 100 years with a truly brilliant mind. It is essential reading for the 21st century. Louis Sullivan developes his arguments with superbly fine points and magnificantly developed reasoning. I am humbled to think I can praise this dear and departed genius. I am in debted to this man's universal thinking, clarity of mind, and depth of soul. Read this book. Love it. Respect it. Re-read it. Cherish it.

5 out of 5 stars The Rare Revised Edition.......2006-07-12

Sullivan first wrote Kindergarten Chats to be published in the periodical Interstate Architect and Builder, 1901-1902; this was reprinted in book form in 1934. In 1918, however, Sullivan revised his manuscripts for Kindergarten Chats; the revisions remained unpublished until 1947 in the present work. The 1918 revisions show the changes and growth that Sullivan experienced professionally, and are considered to be among his best works. There are numerous changes not in the first book edition of 1934. Scarce

Acknowledgments The publishers and editor wish to acknowledge their indebtedness, for material, assistance and advice, to the following persons Mr. George Grant Eimslie, executor of Sullivans literary estate, whose - wholehearted cooperation made this publication possible Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Morrison, of Hanover, N. H. the staff of the Burnham Library of Architecture, The Art Institute of Chicago, especially Miss Etheldred Abbot and Mrs. T. M. Hofmeester, Jr. particular thanks are due for generous loan of manuscripts the staff of the Avery Library, Columbia University, especially Mr. Talbot Hamlin and Mrs. Corinne Spencer all other persons who have kindly aided in obtaining documents and illustrative material. Publishers Note During the last days of the war the publishers determined upon the reprinting of the complete text of the following works, an undertaking which was warmly seconded by Mr. Eimslie. Our thoughts then turned to someone capable of handling all the literary and technical details involved. Our gratitude and admiration go to Isabella Athey who, in spite of many obstacles, successfully collated all available material in order that the contemporary reader should have the benefit of meeting a great American thinker and architect. Without Miss A they s unfailing endeavors as - well as valuable assistance from other sources this publication might never have reached the public which we believe Sullivans writings deserve. Editorial Note The printing of the unpublished revision of Kindergarten Chats in this volume carries out at last Louis Sullivans wish that his work be issued in book form his Foreword., written in July 1918, is our authority. That no publisher was found during the six remaining years of Ms life., and that a good deal of vagueness and misunderstanding arose concerning Sullivans attitude to this work as well as with regard to the existence and condition of a revised manuscript reflects the com monplace that human nature and scholarship are inextricably bound together. Sullivan believed that a building represented an act,, and that such an act re vealed the man behind it, the mind and ethics of the architect, more conclusively and unerringly than any statement. In this sense, the fifty-two consecutive essays entitled Kindergarten Chats are an act, requiring no officious introduction or inter pretation. Nevertheless, a few general remarks should be made to suggest the nature and significance of Sullivans editing of 1918, particularly since the first version published serially in 1901 is available only in a few obscure files, and that edited by Claude Bragdon in 1 934 is out of print. From June to October 1918, Sullivan worked over the manuscript and produced the text which follows, and which therefore represents its definitive form. The actual manuscript gives the impression that Sullivan revised in the exact meaning of the word, that he gave attention to every sentence and paragraph, that his alterations of word and phrase, his cutting and rewriting, were the product of genuine reconsid eration and a desire for greater clarity. The redundant or unprecise adjective was discarded the specific term was substituted for the more general or the vague one repetitive passages were deleted. Throughout this revision and the text here pub lished was prepared directly from the original manuscript it may be said that the secondary has been sacrificed to the primary...

                      Book Description

Yves Klein was regarded as a visionary even by his contemporaries. An enfant terrible and outstanding judo enthusiast whose spectacular performances attracted considerable attention in the art world, Klein created a following that only intensified in the wake of his premature death. Having anticipated numerous movements such as Happenings, Performance, Land and Body Art, and Conceptual Art, Klein's manifold oeuvre, realized within a period of only eight years, continues to exercise a decisive influence to this day. This comprehensive retrospective, presented by the Schirn Kunsthalle gallery in Frankfurt, includes over 100 works representing Klein's entire career from his first monochromes in orange, yellow, green, pink, black, and white, to his famous Klein blue monochromes, his sponge relief sculptures, his much-discussed Anthropometries, for which he used female models as live brushes, his monogold paintings, and his last experiments with fire and elements of nature.

                        Book Description

Profound and ironic, nothing is one of the driving themes of 20th century art. One thinks of Piet Mondrian's reductivist approach to abstraction, Marcel Duchamp's contention that art resides in ideas, not objects, Mark Rothko's painterly reach for the sublime, Andy Warhol's affirmations of the vacuity of Pop culture. The Big Nothing will focus on themes of nothing, nothingness, and negation in contemporary art and culture, surveying the legacy of these and other manifestations of absence made manifest in contemporary art. Artist include Gareth James, Jutta Koether, Louise Lawler, Richard Prince, Yves Klein, Bernadette Corporation, John Miller, and James Welling, among others. Given its broad connotations, "nothing" provides general audiences with immediate access to looking at and thinking about the art of today. Part of a pan-Philadelphia cultural event initiated by the ICA, in which the city gives itself over to the art of nothing.

                            Book Description

Description: Yves Klein: Air Architecture is not about Leap Into the Void, the 1960 photograph of Yves Klein diving out the second story of a building. Rather, it presents the architectural projects and theories of the French conceptual artist in the context of current tendencies toward immateriality in architecture, design, and art. This volume includes reproductions of drawings and other works from the Yves Klein Archive in Paris, as well as essays offering both historical and contemporary perspectives on the artist's work. This will be the first publication and accompanying exhibition focused solely on this body of Klein's work. Also included are the first English translation of Klein's lecture at the Sorbonne in 1959, along with related writings. Essays articulate the importance of Klein's work on the subject of immateriality and cite the evolution of this idea from the 1950s through today. A visual essay illustrates this evolution with examples of works by late modern and contemporary architects, designers, and artists.

How do we do justice to art when we treat it not as a discrete European or other regional tradition, but as a worldwide phenomenon with a long history? In this groundbreaking book, leading academics, curators, bibliographers, and representatives of international organizations from every continent explain the ways they deal with the conflict between the need to compress and the desire to express. Anyone who faces this challenge, whether in developing a course at university or school, writing a textbook, installing a museum collection, mounting an exhibition, or otherwise presenting the world’s cultural heritage will want to read it.

                                      Book Description

This volume contains a unique collection of essays on various aspects of current interest within the field of public international law, international criminal law, human rights and humanitarian law. The wide range and topicality of the issues covered bears witness to the vast professional experience of Antonio Cassese, the first President of the ICTY, in whose honour this collection has been compiled, and to the many fields of scholarship in which he has left a permanent mark. Written by a selection of renowned academics and practitioners, Man's Inhumanity to Man offers the reader thought-provoking discussion on the International Criminal Court, the ICTY and International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and other aspects of international criminal justice; on truth commissions and amnesties in the aftermath of armed conflicts; on military humanitarian intervention and the development of human rights protection.

Rodger, co-founder of Magnum Photos picture agency, began his career as a still photographer for the BB. His memorable images of World War II are unsurpassed--Eric Sevareid broadcasting live during an air raid; steel-helmeted civil defense workers taking time for tea in a china cup; the corpse of a German soldier lying in front of a suburban villa in France. Yet his studies of tribal rituals and ceremonies in South Africa, Uganda and Southern Sudan after the war are just as likely to get under your skin. The humanity in Rodger's work is epitomized, perhaps, by his photo of Dr. Albert Schweitzer in his jungle office, with a kitten on his desk.

Yet another wonderfully photographed book by an original member of the Magnum family. Rodger's images circle the globe and tell wonderful stories from everywhere. Rather well printed, excellent b&w compositions that any photographer or artist must respect.

I bet you know some of his photographs. Startet as an stills photographer in the BBC George Rodger became famous with his pictures made for the LIFE magazine, was a co-founder of the Magnum Pictures agency and was later active in Africa and Asia. The book concentrates on his work while and after World War II, starting with his pictures of british people under the german Blitz, the air raids against british towns and civilists. Then the liberation of Europe, France, Italy ... the horrible pictures of the first Concentration Camp freed by american troops (Bergen Belsen), journeys through africa with the first pictures of the Nuba Tribe (there is a whole book available about this), often claimed to be much better then the later works of Leni Riefenstahl, Asia - the time range goes from the forties to pictures from Africa from 1979. George Rodger died in 1995. If you're interested in reportage photography then this is a must have.

                                          Book Description

As evidenced by the recent US led invasion of Iraq in 2003, and the subsequent altering of rationales regarding the perceived justification of such an invasion by its originators, the prescript basis for the Nuremberg Principles of 1946 have been undermined by the same political and economic methodology that created it. Whether nations are invaded in terms of ideological justifications, preemptive defense purposes, or for reasons pertaining to economic advancement, each is defined summarily and unequivocally under Nazi defined Lebensraum. In Volume 2 of The Third Reich, A Revolution of Ideological Inhumanity - Death Mask of Humanity, a comprehensive historical illustration of Hitler's attempt to conquer Europe and to eradicate all European Jews in the name of his own primitive ideology is presented. Volume 2 illustrates the most important aspects of WWII in a chronological manner.

Title: The quality of mercy: innocent victims have much to teach us about our own inhumanity and the workings of divine mercy. Their suffering--epitomized in the crucifixion of Jesus--holds the key to stopping the cycle of individual and institutional violence.

                                                      Book Description

Three original models which explain business cycles as a result of self-fulfilling expectations are presented. The models are founded on the structure of dynamic general equilibrium theory. Market power and increasing returns to scale are introduced which allow indeterminancy of the Rational Expectations equilibria to be obtained. Unlike the majority of existing literature on this subject, the departures from perfect markets and constant returns presented in these models are very low and, more importantly, at a realistic level to achieve the respective results. It is demonstrated in all of the presented models that stylized facts of the business cycle can be reproduced.
