Customer Reviews:
Inspiring Book.......2007-01-15
I really like this book. The photographs are beautiful, and the information quite useful. Although the author has various lists of essential items to have in your home, the descriptions tie in nicely with the clean and colorful images. This book is more about important staples for your home, but shown with a modern chic flair.
HIGHLY UNINSPIRING.......2006-08-27
This is one of the very few books I have on interior decorating I really regret buying without a readers review. It reads like a shopping list with extremely bland, uninspring pictures.Everything is white and everything is slipcovered.
As a mere shopping list this book is true to its name, however dont expect anything more than that.If you need someone to tell you to buy bowls and saucers for your kitchen, or classic pieces rather than fad pieces, quality pieces rather than cheap knockoffs, then buy this book.If not please give it a pass.

Ideas for woodturning.......1998-12-30
141 Pages. Full color photos of turned objects, usually one per page, type of wood and size for each object. Not much text, a "picture book". I have used this book a lot, much more variation than in single artist books. Contents: Bowls, Containers (Boxes), Bottles, Vases, Hollow forms, Closed forms, Natural Tops and Natural Edges, Platters and Plaques, Variations in Shapes.

Florida Lighthouses
ASIN: 1561641723 |
Book Description
Written and fully illustrated by internationally known artist Roger Bansemer, this book, depicting Florida's thirty lighthouses in over 200 paintings and sketches, is sure to be an instant collector's treasure. The artist recently visited each lighthousea feat which took him on many land and sea adventuresand offers here the only book with an accurate description of how each looks today.
What is it about lighthouses that makes us look at them with such interest? It could be their romantic settings. Lighthouses also symbolize guidance and hope. They are stately and reassuring, even to those of us who don't make our living from the sea. The tradition that these lights burned brightly under all conditions and circumstances is noble and praiseworthy.
Time and technology have caught up with the lighthouses of Florida. Most have withstood wars and weather, but they have not been able to withstand the assault of the modern electronic age. Because of this, many a light has faded from the horizon. Thirty Florida lighthouses still stand. Some of them have been lovingly restored by concerned groups, but others are barely standing, tattered by erosion, vandalism, and the effects of time. Some are remote and lonely places seldom visited; others have become attractions, open to the inspection of the curious and sincere lighthouse enthusiasts alike. All have stories to tell.

A beatiful way to become familiar with Florida's lighthouses.......2007-01-12
This was a "coffee table" book in a beach house we rented. We were really excited about it and ordered one for ourself and one for our daughter's family. We also ordered the SC and GA one for another daughter. The writing style is so homey and comfortable and the pictures are beatiful and relaxing. The stories and the paintings made us want to see all of the lighthouses. Therefore, we are planning a trip this year to see as many of them as we can. We have also found it exciting to know so much more about the 5-6 lighthouses in our area. This book really piqued our interest in lighthouses with its enjoyable writing and lovely art.
The Best Florida Lighthouse Book Yet!.......2000-02-24
Bansemer's Book of Florida Lighthouses is the best book on lighthouses that I have ever read. Inside, is beautiful and colorful artwork of every Florida Lighthouse. This book contains very descriptive information and how to get to the lighthouses. I have read every book on Florida Lighthouses and this one is the BEST and will be for a long time!

Although nearly 7 million people live along the southeast Florida coast scarcely three generations ago it was a wild lawless frontier ruled by bears snakes and alligators. But when a lighthouse was built at Jupiter Inlet in 1860 it became the hub for hunters surveyors Civil War blockade runners Union gunboats and pioneer farmers. A Light in the Wilderness with over seventy rare photos maps and letters tells how southeast Florida survived the catharsis of the Civil War how the lighthouse at Jupiter drew the first families into its orbit and how it became a key link in the steamboatrailroad path that led people to the Garden of Eden.

Snyder's Latest Work Is a Tour de Force for Florida History Lovers.......2006-11-02
James Snyder's A Light in the Wilderness is a brilliantly written, extraordinarily well-researched Florida history classic. Easy to read and full of a number of fascinating vintage photos, the reader is taken on a magical mystery tour of sorts involving a colorful cast of characters including everything from Caribbean pirates and Seminole warriors to Civil War blockade runners. Snyder's dry sense of humor adds wit to an already spirited and exciting story. This book is a must for Florida history lovers.

Very excellent lighthouse book.......2002-12-11
First, this book is chocked full of Bruce Roberts' beautiful photographs of the lighthouses in this region. The photographs are nothing less than SPECTACULAR! Combined with the revised and updated information on each makes this regional lighthouse guide a requirement you won't want to be without whether you're visiting the region or a life-long resident. The text contains full, rich descriptions of each lighthouse, too.
I have many lighthouse books and all of Bruce Roberts' and Ray Jones' regional guides. I've read them all and used most of them while traveling. I've found them to be first rate, an excellent choice for people who want everything lighthouse between two covers. A joy to look at and informative to read.
These books are good for finding the lights that are in them.......2002-04-16
There are directions and other info for finding and visiting lighthouses. They do not always show all lights for a given area. The photos are all color. I own 3 of these books. There are not many other guide books out there so if you are looking for guide books these are good to have. Since there are so many books in this series I thought I'd help people find them easier. This is the series.

This is a very comprehensive collection of information about the lighthouses along the gulf coast. The photos are wonderful, the historical facts interesting and layout beautiful. And it includes directions to all the pictured lighthouses.
A good book about "still existing" Gulf Coast Lighthouses........1999-02-21
There aren't that many books about Gulf Coast Lighthouses, especially the Western Gulf. This book covers all the lights that are still standing, gives a picture and directions to each one, as well as a short history. It also has some good history in the introductions to each section, and general maps. It isn't an encyclopedia, but a very nice coverage of its subject. I think it belongs in the library of anyone interested in Gulf Coast Lighthouses.

An excellent summary of Florida's lighthouses.......1999-05-11
McCarthy's book on Florida's lighthouses is wonderfully thorough and marvelously concise. Each lighthouse merits a few solidly written pages of its history and lore, graced by dramatic William Trotter paintings of each light. Directions and maps conclude each chapter. This is a delightful work, easy to read and ready to use. Anyone journeying to Florida to see the state's 30 lighthouses should take along a copy of McCarthy's book. Among the growing number of lighthouse books, this one is well worth having on the shelf.

Book Description
Do you know anyone who grew up in a lighthouse? Well, here is a true story of the Roberts family''s three generations of lighthouse keepers in the U. S. Lighthouse Service. Their dedication and devotion began in 1894 when grandfather was assigned to the Cape Saint George Lighthouse in Apalachicola, Florida, and lasted for over fifty-eight years and three generations. This story, recorded by a family member, is all about their lighthouses, family lives, duties of maintaining and operating the lighthouses along with childhood stories of his growing up on lighthouse stations during the depression years. A review by The St. Simon''s Soundings, Fort Walton Beach, Florida: "This life at the lighthouse has succumbed to electric power, automation and GPS and it was wonderful to hear of it from one who was there; the author informs and entertains with tales of his youth. Moreover, Billy Roberts is a breath of true history for all of us who have recently become ''natives'' of this Gulf Coast".

Book Description
From Amelia Island in northeastern Florida to Pensacola in the Panhandle, the coast of Florida is dotted with lighthouses of all sizes, shapes, materials, and, best of all, histories. Florida Lighthouse Trail offers a collection of the histories of Florida's light stations by a number of different authors, each an authority on a particular lighthouse. They share fascinating details of the lives of these great sentinels:
The St. Augustine Lighthouse has proved its sturdiness by withstanding three separate earthquakes in 1879, 1886, and 1893all within the first 14 years of its existence.
Author Stephen Crane, shipwrecked off Florida's coast in 1897, used the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse to lead him to the safety of shore.
During the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935, keepers at Alligator Reef Lighthouse survived 200-mile-per-hour winds and a 20-foot storm surge.
Chock-full of information on dates of construction and operation, foundation materials, and lighting equipment, this book also contains complete directions to each lighthouse site, along with the names, addresses, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and websites of lighthouse organizations. With a preface by Wayne Wheeler, president of the United States Lighthouse Society, Florida Lighthouse Trail gives lighthouse and history buffs the most up-to-date listing of lighthouses open to the public, short biographies of the authors, and a full glossary, bibliography, and index.
Customer Reviews:
If You Love Lighthouses.......2001-06-13
This book is for lighthouse lovers that are living in or interested in lighthouses of Florida. The book lists all the lighthouses and gives a brief history. Each lighthouse has a fact list and there are also directions on how to get there. Fees for entering the lighthouses and museums are also listed. This is a great book if you are planning a trip such as we are this summer. The only thing lacking is a good map of Florida showing the locations of the lighthouses. There is a map in the front of the book but it is too small and needs to be larger.
