Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A774483. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: A data acquisition device was constructed and tested to obtain toothed whale (Bottlenose Dolphin and Beluga Whale) sonar signals and digitally store them to a PC hard drive. The device had the capability of capturing sonar signals by means of a two-hydrophone array, and a digital video camera in a submersible housing. Cooperation with marine biologists at SSC San Diego enabled the sampling of three animals performing echolocation tasks. Their sonar signals, transmissions of rapid high frequency pulses called clicks, were recorded for further processing. Once the data was captured on video and hard disk drive, it was processed using MATLAB. Data from three different toothed whales, a normal Bottlenose Dolphin, a Bottlenose Dolphin with a hearing impairment and a Beluga Whale, was analyzed. It was observed that the animals reduced the interval between clicks when they located a target. Correlating the signal data to the video data made this observation possible. It appeared the animals searched with widely spaced clicks, then narrowed the click period upon target detection. Also, it was noted that the frequency of isolated clicks decreased as click period decreased. However, the hearing impaired Dolphin maintained his click frequency regardless of click periodicity.

Book Description
Dynamic light scattering is a new method for investigating macromolecular systems. The importance of the technique lies in its non-invasive character. It can be employed on extremely small fluid volumes, the instrumentation is relatively inexpensive and allows the rapid determination of
diffusion coefficients as well as providing information on relaxation time distributions for the macromolecular components of complex systems. This volume is directed in part to the philosophy and current practice in dynamic light scattering. Single photon correlation techniques are introduced; a
discussion of noise on photon correlation functions is given and data analysis in dynamic light scattering to polymer structure analysis is presented; and a comprehensive introduction to diffusing wave spectroscopy is given. Theoretical developments relating dynamic light scattering to the
viscoelasticity of polymers in solution and in the bulk are described. A secondary aim of the work is to illustrate the widely varying fields in which the technique finds application. Chapters address multicomponent mixtures, polyelectrolytes, dense polymer systems, gels, rigid rods, micellar
systems and the application of dynamic light scattering to biological systems.

Book Description
Biomaterials repair, reinforce or replace damaged functional parts of the (human) body. All mechanical and biological interactions between an implant and the body occur across the interface, which has to correspond as nearly as possible to its particular function. Much of the progress in adapting polymer materials for use in a biological environment has been obtained through irradiation techniques. For this reason the most recent developments in four key areas are reviewed in this special volume: (1) the analysis of the topology and the elemental composition of a functional surface, (2) the chemical modification of the surface which results in highly pure, sterile and versatile surfaces, (3) the sterilisation of implantable devices via ionising radiation and its possible effects on the structural mechanical properties of polymers, and (4) the radiation effects on living cells and tissues which are of particular importance for radiation protection and radiotherapy.

Book Description
How did life begin on the Earth? The units of life are cells, which can be defined as bounded systems of molecules that capture energy and nutrients from the environment -- systems that expand, reproduce, and evolve over time, often into more complex systems. This book is the proceedings of a unique meeting, sponsored by NATO and held in Maratea, Italy, that brought together for the first time an international group of investigators who share an interest in how molecules self-assemble into supramolecular structures, and how those structures may have contributed to the origin of life.
The book is written at a moderately technical level, appropriate for use by researchers and by students in upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in biochemistry and molecular biology. The overall interest of its subject matter provides an excellent introduction for students who wish to understand how the foundational knowledge of chemistry and physics can be applied to one of the most fundamental questions now facing the scientific community.
The editors are pioneers in defining what we mean by the living state, particularly the manner in which simple molecular systems can assume complex associations and functions, including the ability to reproduce. Each chapter of the book presents an up-to-date report of highly significant research. Two of the authors received medals from the National Academy of Science USA in 1994, and other research reported in the book has been featured in internationally recognized journals such

10 stars ...........2006-07-02
I've read (attempted to read) a number of books on general relativity, including the elementary texts (Schutz, others), the introductions for mathematicians (Lee), books on tensors, web intros, .... and the only one that I've been able gain any traction with is this book. And, I'm not exactly unprepared, as I have a MS in math and have worked a number of years as an engineer, much of the time doing inertial nav and other presumably related work. Yet, the other GR books have completely baffled me. Warning ... if you start a book and there is a long section on tensors .... look out... or you'll soon be playing a game of 'find the pea (relativity)' and it will be under plenty of thick mattresses (tensor analysis being but one). This book develops all the machinery using a 2-d surface embedded in 3-d. This is the way to go, no question in my mind. There is a degree of concreteness to counter the endless poliferation of new symbols and notation. Then there is a good (could have been better see the Calculus Without Tears web page) intro to special relativity. And then .... before you've finished breakfast ... field equations... which I'm working on now. If not for this book, I might have given up on my latest hobby, GR.
For example ... spacetime is curved? Yes. Hard to visualize? No. Throw a ball ... look at the arc .... there it is. Calculate the curvature? Easy... no tensors, field equations, differentials. Of course, even Faber waits till page 274 for this little demonstration, and he could have put it on page 1... still, it's there.
Highly recommended. Shame about the price.......2001-06-03
The first part of this book is a lucid introduction to classical differential geometry from the Frenet formulas to Riemannian manifolds, via Gauss curvature, metric coefficients, connections, geodesics and the curvature tensor, with many well-motivated examples and exercises. If you have a working knowledge of basic linear algebra and multivariable calculus you should have no trouble with any of this.
The remainder (two-thirds of the book) provides one of the most readable introductions to special and general relativity that I have ever come across. Because of the geometric approach, modest prerequisites and limited space, there is no treatment of relativistic mechanics, electrodynamics or the 'matter' field equations, and actually no formal development of tensor calculus. Within these constraints, it is amazing what the author does manage to cover. You will be led easily through the vacuum field equations, Schwarzschild solution, perihelion precession, light-bending ...
If this book had been twice the length - more comprehensive but in the same style - it could have been a classic. As it is, it does not seem to be anywhere near as widely used as it deserves to be .. Surely this is a prime candidate for a ..Dover edition? Until then, get it from the library.
A very accessible book - well worth a look.......2000-11-01
This book comprises two sections. The first section develops the tools of classical differential geometry with a thorough treatment of 2D surfaces embedded in a 3D space. First and second fundamental forms are introduced and their relationships analysed. This leads into the usual realms - Christoffel symbols, connections and the Riemann Curvature Tensor.A very readable account of Gauss's Theorem Egregium is presented - it's great!. Finally, more abstract manifolds are presented.I worked thoroughly through the first half of this book. There are many good exercises. This volume is cited a number of times In Gregory L. Naber's 'Spacetime and Singularities'- a more difficult book. I found Faber's volume of real help when studying the latter(which has loads of exercises and problems but no hints/partial solutions at all). The second section is an introduction to Special and General Relativity. I have to confess I did not study this half as I had already covered the material presented in this section elsewhere. The first half of the book gives a very good feel for curved space and is fitting preparation for the second half if the material presented there is new to you.. A good little book for independent study.

Book Description
Thomas More: Utopia/ Francis Bacon: New Atlantis/Henry Neville: The Isle of Pines With the publication of Utopia (1516), Thomas More introduced into the English language not only a new word, but a new way of thinking about the gulf between what ought to be and what is. His Utopia is at once a scathing analysis of the shortcomings of his own society, a realistic suggestion for an alternative mode of social organization, and a satire on unrealistic idealism. Enormously influential, it remains a challenging as well as a playful text. This edition reprints Ralph Robinson's 1556 translation from More's original Latin together with letters and illustrations that accompanied early editions of Utopia. Utopia was only one of many early modern treatments of other worlds. This edition also includes two other, hitherto less accessible, utopian narratives. New Atlantis (1627) offers a fictional illustration of Francis Bacon's visionary ideal of the role that science should play in the modern society. Henry Neville's The Isle of Pines (1668), a precursor of Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, engages with some of the sexual, racial, and colonialist anxieties of the end of the early modern period. Together these texts illustrate the diversity of the early modern utopian imagination, as well as the different purposes to which it could be put.
Customer Reviews:
Prose which still affects our thinking.......2000-09-18
Literature before James Joyce, before Jane Austen, before Daniel Defoe: No Ulysses, no Emma, no Robinson Crusoe - for modern readers it is hard to imagine a stock of English literature without the existence of these and other important writers and their `novels'. What kind of literature could one refer to in a pre-novelistic age? As a matter of fact, there were authors, such as Sir Thomas More and Sir Francis Bacon, who wrote prose which, indeed, still affects our thinking. However, neither More nor Bacon used English, but chose Latin as their original means of expression. For what reasons? And none of these authors was in fact a free-lance writer - they were all occupied in public and political spheres. What made them actually write fictional works? How does their fiction relate to their cultural environment - or, what was regarded as `fiction'? These texts cover a century of political, religious, scientific and literary debates and gave rise to a new understanding of knowledge, and introduced influential literary devices.
