Book Description
From the creative team behind Stone comes another comprehensive study of one of nature's greatest decorating materials: wood. Both an inspirational style guide and a technical manual, Designing a Home with Wood features this fundamental element in every imaginable adaptation: carved entryways, ornate moldings, inlaid floors, beamed ceilings, kitchen cabinetry, and more. Extensively illustrated with more than 250 full-color photographs, it is sure to inform the professional contractor as well as the do-it-yourselfer.
The book is divided into four sections. Part 1 identifies the types of wood utilized in interiors, including domestic species like oak, pine, and cedar; exotic varieties like bamboo, cork, and teak; and reclaimed pieces from barn siding, abandoned buildings, and antique furniture. Part 2 suggests the many ways wood can be employed throughout the house, and spotlights accents like wainscoting and shutters. Part 3 describes different styles, stains, and finishes of wood, along with how-to instructions for creating your own specialized effects. And Part 4 offers an appendix on purchasing and maintaining wood surfaces-as well as a complete section of "stain-and-grain" swatches. Meticulously researched and magnificently presented, this is the indispensable reference for using wood in home decor. AUTHOR BIO: HEATHER E. and EARL G. ADAMS, JR. are the authors of Stone: Designing Kitchens, Baths, and Interiors with Natural Stone (STC 2003). Founders and co-owners of Natural Stone Design, a specialty tile showroom on the Gulf Coast of Florida, the Adamses frequently contribute to both newspaper and magazine articles.
CARLA STEINBACH is chief interior designer for Natural Stone Design. Her original designs are frequently featured in regional newspapers and magazines.

Inspiring photos and interesting tips.......2006-10-01
This book is filled with inspiring photos and interesting tid-bits and suggestions for using wood practically everywhere in your home. It covers traditional uses of wood such as flooring and kitchen cabinets to more unexpected uses including wooden bath tubs.
The book begins with a discussion of many species of wood including typical uses of that wood and why it is ideal for those uses. It then moves to discussions of specific rooms and both the conventional and creative uses of wood in those spaces. Next come photos and brief discussions of how to incorporate wood in several different design styles with chapters on American styles, European styles and exotic styles. The book concludes with a chapter on wood finishes. The appendix includes a table summarizing most of the wood species discussed in the book as well as over 180 color photos of 1" square samples of wood species variations.
On a downside, just note that the book was difficult to read cover-to-cover. I believe the font choice and size was a significant factor. Many times, I found myself rereading paragraphs or loosing my place mid-sentence.
If you are looking for inspiration, you'll find some here. This book has a lot to offer anyone wanting to incorporate more wood into an existing or planned home. Most chapters throughout the book have several "Ideas for..." sections with specific tips related to the topic being discussed: flooring, ceilings, each of the design styles, etc.
A must have book if building or remodeling.......2004-11-09
I am in the middle of building a new home, and this book was exactly what I needed. The photography is gorgeous and full of beautiful ideas from inlaid wood borders and medallions, to dark hand scraped floors and heavy aged beams, to thick molding and wooden arches, you name it. The wood stain and grain "swatches" in the back of the book helped me to decide what wood type and in what color I wanted to use. The perfect combination of lush photography, unique ideas and detailed information on wood in every aspect of the home interior. Very highly recommended!

Book Description
Netsuke are small toggles or buckles carved from wood or ivory. The Japanese in the seventeenth century used them to fasten pouches to their kimono belt, since kimonos had no pockets. This lavishly illustrated book takes the reader on an exciting tour of one type of netsuke—those carved to look like the masks used by stage actors.

The Best Dressage Book ever written.......2005-01-01
If you only buy one dressage book, make this the one. It is the most comprehensive, best written book on the systematic
training of the horse. It still holds completely valid today. This book should be in every equestrian's library.
Book Description
The Gymnasium of Virtue is the first book devoted exclusively to the study of education in ancient Sparta, covering the period from the sixth century B.C. to the fourth century A.D. Nigel Kennell refutes the popular notion that classical Spartan education was a conservative amalgam of 'primitive' customs not found elsewhere in Greece. He argues instead that later political and cultural movements made the system appear to be more distinctive than it actually had been, as a means of asserting Sparta's claim to be a unique society.
Using epigraphical, literary, and archaeological evidence, Kennell describes the development of all aspects of Spartan education, including the age-grade system and physical contests that were integral to the system. He shows that Spartan education reached its apogee in the early Roman Empire, when Spartans sought to distinguish themselves from other Greeks. He attributes many of the changes instituted later in the period to one personthe philosopher Sphaerus the Borysthenite, who was an adviser to the revolutionary king Cleomenes III in the third century B.C.

Good Academic Study of The History of the Agoge.......2000-12-11
This is an excellent book about the Spartan system of educating young men (The Agoge). It looks at the way the Agoge existed in the Roman period and then traces it back through the Hellenistic period to the Archaic period. It has great coverage of the various rituals such as the Endurance contest. Occasionally, it becomes weighted down with discussion of details such as the names given to Spartan age groups. This is however within the scope of the book. It was not written so much for a general reader, though it can be read by one, but rather for someone with some knowledge of Spartan history. Overall, it is well researched and documented. Kennell reaches interesting conclusions about the Agoge's ties to society and religion.

Book Description
This book is the first systematic effort to examine the history of the body in modern Germany. By looking into medical dietetics, walking, dancing, gymnastics, cholera, and class rooms it reconstructs the ways the middle-class body became a source of political and social autonomy and a medium of social interaction.

Innocence of Youth!.......2003-04-23
It is a world of good-looking model boys, that are innocent yet sensual, and they have been immortalized by Mark Twain, and celebrated by the famous photographers such as Bruce Weber and Greg Gorman. Now we have Luke Smalley who takes it a step further. He has spent 10 years recreating these athletic images of an innocent and bygone era that was once called All American, way before the nation lost its innocence. This is an outstanding collection of teenage athletes, residents of Pennsylvania towns, who Smalley has posed throwing footballs, wrestling, leaping over hurdles and performing gymnastics. That Twin Palms published this book for Smalley is an added bonus, for it is beautifully designed and bound. The black and white photos are superbly reproduced here.
Smalley has accomplished what he set out to do, capturing the innocence of youth, a vision of the past, and the masculine youthful beauty of young men at the peak of their athletic ability. This is an outstanding book that should be on every collectors list!

oh - to be a boy again!.......2002-09-10
The moments from Luke Smalley's insightful and compelling photo essay could easily have been captured at the turn of the century. If it weren't for the book's brief introduction - we would all be easily fooled. Mr. Smalley (who I hope we hear from again very soon) manages to take us back to another time - one not so complicated compared to the complexities of today's modern day lifestyle, where we can easily escape ourselves in the memory of our youth. He also manages to capture an innocence in these young athletes that reminds you of Bruce Weber's early work - you just say to yourself: "Where did he find them - And how did he get them to pose like that!!" This really is a terrific book and I'd recommend it to friends, as well as strangers.
Wistful Humor.......2002-02-24
Since receiving Luke Smalley's Gymnasium I have returned to it a number of times. Each time I have been rewarded with a sense of discovering something new. The beauty of the images is not because the subjects are necessarily conventionally handsome or sexual (in fact it is clear throughout that the book is not about any kind of sexual prurience). The beauty comes both from Luke Smalley's technique and from the honest and direct portrayal of the young men in the pictures. It also comes from the bittersweet emotions from those (historic and transient) moments in the lives of boys. The turn-of-the-century nostalgia in the outfits and equipment mirrors the wistfulness of the irreversible developmental surges taking place in these boys. The beauty also comes from the humor that makes change and loss bearable. Luke Smalley deserves a great deal of credit in making us this gift.
10 years for nothing.......2002-02-04
Rather disappointing. I awaited the release after spotting the book's first announcement on the Twin Palms Press catalogue. A friend of his furthered my enthusiasm by raving about it. Yet finally it's little more than ho-hum boring teenies hardly flexing in poorly realized tableaux that do little else but thinly veil stale eroticism. For all his horrid kitsch, von Gloeden did it better.
I cannot imagine where Smalley's time went.
(Amazon doesn't allow zero stars, so the one I'm giving it comes from necessity)
The comfort of nostalgia and bewilderment of beauty........2001-12-26
Luke Smalley's photographs are of (mostly) barechested high school athletes, dressed in antique athletic wear and often interacting with antiquated fitness equipment. The theme of nostalgia is firmly established by Smalley's reiteration of the past by sepia toning the images, using old time photographic vignettes and lighting techniques similar to those used by photographers in the earlier half of the 20th century.
The images presented in Gymnasium are reminiscent of a Bruce Weber project in many respects. While Weber often makes the kind of commercial prattle unleashed in his ever popular softcore Abercrombie and Fitch catalogs, he sometimes comes through with profound work, as he did with the magnificent five star "The Chop Suey Club," Arena Editions, 1999. Weber too finds his muse in the beauty of young men, athletes in particular.
Weber often avoids commercial slickness by using spontinaety and organic environments, while at the same time embracing a classic perfectionism not unlike that of Robert Mapplethorpe or Herbert List - a balance that often leaves his editorial and celebrity work looking prosaic, but gives his personal work the focus and intensity demonstrated by a true master at the top of his game.
Smalley, as well, constructs, or finds, spare sets which help depict his vision of an idyllic arcadia. His invention allows the viewer to imagine what he imagines, a past that perhaps existed, perhaps not. While the images may be loose, often casual and playful, the project as a whole is tight. Smalley doesn't loose his focus for an instant, while finding variety within his formal strategy.
Smalley doesn't seem to care that much about the perfect craftsmanship of the picture as an object by today's standards. Even at 8x11 inches, the pictures are a quite grainy b&w, think tri-x 35mm ( though I have know idea what Smalley's actual camera format is). Like the work of Larry Clark, it is about the kid first.
It is the moment of serene connection between the photographer and the object of beauty which imbues the photographs of Luke Smalley with a fierce vitality.
The forward suggests a vision of a past where the often erotic obviousness of the images to come is removed or dispelled via "the innocence of the times" they portray reorientation. This Whitman-esque romantic notion of rugged male perfection and youthful beauty has been voided by the cynicism of our time - that seems to be the true message of Gymnasium.
Customer Reviews:
Great potential but disappointing "read".......2005-12-29
This book is more of a long brochure than it is a book that you sit down and read. The concept is brillant and I will admit that I had really high expectations for it, so maybe I was destined to be disappointed from the start...
This book hardly takes any time to get through and I did laugh out loud a few different times when I was able to picture people from my gym acting like the ones mentioned in the text. My reactions and thoughts are very similar to the author's in a few instances when it comes to working out, but I did get annoyed with her constant whining and repeated observations throughout the text. This book is a slightly amusing, mindless read...IF you go to a gym. I can't imagine reading it if you don't and certainly wouldn't recommend that you pay full price for it no matter what.
Really Funny!.......2005-11-04
Since I've been feeling particularily fat and out of shape these days, it's no surprise I was drawn to this book. I saw it at the bookstore and picked up to flip through and it was really funny! It made me laugh out loud and since the title says exactly what my friends and I say to each other, I bought my two best friends copies. Even though I still hate the gym, the author has such a funny take on it, and great names for all of the weirdos there that I laughed when I actually did make to the gym and recognized a few of the characters. (The Mirror Man - I hate The Mirror Man!) This book was a really fun read and made me feel like I'm not the only one who has to force themselves to go to the gym.
96 pages of..........2005-03-10
96 pages (and not even full pages - these are some teeny, tiny pages riddled with elementary illustrations) of sometimes-amusing gripes and tips about and for the gym. The author pisses and moans a lot, which is a given considering the title, but she seems to really be annoyed with "housewives" and "stay at home moms", as they are mentioned as a group even more than the "old folks" that she also cannot stand for various grody reasons.
The funniest comment was in the acknowledgements, where she thanks her editor/friend for "helping me see the light at the end of the tunnel," which to me makes it sound like she spent more than a full month on this spare little pamphlet.
Laughed out loud.......2005-02-18
I never laugh out loud when I read, and this title surely made me giggle. I saw the cool cover treatment and knew it had to be a fun, cute book. I was right. Such a light topic, but something many of us have on our minds: when are we going to make it to the gym--and do we really have to go??
Gym-haters of the world: Unite!.......2005-01-17
This is a fast, fun, funny read that gives America's torture chambers (aka "gyms"), its sadistic machinery and vicious employees what they deserve.
The author blows the lid off of the sick culture of fitness and exercise. And she puts into words exactly what the rest of us feel: That we would rathre be ANYWHERE and do ANYTHING rather than go to the gym.
Which is why, instead of going to the gym like I should, I am writing this review.
Well done, Ms. Kamensky!

Jam-packed with material for the intermediate-advanced player.......2006-10-09
Robin Hill has done the legwork for you, in culling the wisdom of other instrumentalists regarding their view of practice and technique. More importantly, he has provided several years' worth of practice material into this volume. Most helpful perhaps are his insights into [...] and practice approach.
If you are looking to inject level headed inspiration into your technique "workout" you will not be disappointed. For the more begining and intermediate players, Scott Tennant's book is fabulous. This book is not a method book.
