5 out of 5 stars This book is the Bible of desert landscape.......1999-05-27

One of the better things that crossed my desk last month was a copy of a new book by John Krieg titled Desert Landscape Architecture (Saint Lucie Press; ISBN: 1574442252.) Whether you are a homeowner, a contractor, a builder, a wanna-be landscaper or a plant person, you need this book. Desert Landscape Architecture is a hands-on, step-by-step, "How To" book that will save anyone thousands of dollars on their landscape. The section on plants would make a great college text book all by itself. There's a plant compendium with over 750 species listed. John is one of very few authors who consider all of our Southwestern deserts, not just those in his home state of California. Desert Landscape Architecture provides the reader a better understanding of desert environments, climatic conditions and how man-made environments are designed and installed in order to cope with the harsh deserts. Best of all, the book is written in the English language....not full of obscure technical terms known only to Zen Landscape Architects living in Madrid, Spain. With this book, and only this book, you'll learn about deserts, the soils, the plant life, design, basic standards of landscape design, site grading, drainage planning and whew!....much, much, more. Water-saving ideas are found by the barrel-full in the chapter on irrigation. This chapter emphasizes the critical nature of irrigation design and explains it as an environmental necessity, not a technical issue. There are pages and pages of charts which contain the basic information needed by everyone interested in landscape design. This book should be required reading for every Planning and Zoning Department in the Southwest. The author knows which end of the hammer drives the nail and his saw is plugged in and ready to rip. This is a hands-on approach, with hundreds of hints on how to plan ahead and bypass a lot of problems that seem to plaque a landscape job, whether it's on a new site or an existing site that needs refurbishing. John Krieg is a former student of the Dean of Desert Landscaping, Dr, Eric Johnson of Palm Springs, California. I spoke with Eric about John's book and he said: "John is one in a million. He knows his work and best of all, he knows how to write! His book moves right along, without a hitch. It's not just another dry old text book with footnotes in small print. This book will become the Bible of desert landscaping in the future." Sure enough, a glance at the text shows bibliographies set in "jumbo" print and the author has included personal comments on each reference cited. Simply stated, Desert Landscape Architecture is the only book you will ever need to buy. It's an investment that will easily save you several thousand dollars. I am proud to have been among the pre-publication readers of Desert Landscape Architecture. Many times, writers get talked into being a reader and when the suggestions get back to the author they are ignored. Folks, John doesn't play that way...each and every suggestion I made was followed. Ditto for the suggestions made by Eric Johnson. Congratulations, John, you've written a winner!

    Book Description

Controversy inevitably accompanies attempts at land protection, even in cases of large, uninhabited, economically marginal locations. In 1994, for example, the California Desert Protection Act created the Mojave National Preserve, the third largest national park in the lower forty-eight states. The act transferred three million acres of southern California desert from the Bureau of Land Management to the National Park Service. As a result, explains Elisabeth M. Hamin, the National Park Service became a multiple-use manager, balancing its official mission of environmental protection with oversight of such activities as hunting, ranching, and mining.

In Mojave Lands: Interpretive Planning and the National Preserve, Hamin explains how this new role came about. Drawing on interviews with people on various sides of the issue -- from mining lobbyists to local ecotourism operators, legislators to gun advocates -- she shows how the differing parties argued and compromised over land protection. From their success, Hamin derives lessons for reimagining national parks to achieve broadly shared goals.

Introducing the concept of "interpretive planning" -- a method that takes into account conflicting views of all interested parties -- she offers explicit steps for the planner and policy analyst to use. This book will appeal to scholars and students in environmental studies, planning and landscape architecture and history, as well as professionals in planning, resource management, the National Park Service, and related conservation organizations, public and private.

          Book Description

This year the Huntington celebrates the centennial of its spectacular desert garden, one of the largest such collections of cacti and other succulents in the world. Visitors to the twelve-acre garden marvel at its more than 3,000 species, including the vivid blue and green Puya, a rare type of bromeliad; the Lithops, or "living stone," whose camouflaged leaves mimic the shape and color of rocks; and the dazzling red, orange, and yellow torch-like blooms of the winter-flowering aloe.
In this beautifully illustrated volume, Lyons draws on decades of experience with these unusual specimens to explore the Huntington's desert garden. He tells of its early development, describes its principal collections, and gives instructions on the care and landscaping of desert gardens.

              Book Description

In 1891, New York Sun reporter and travel writer J. R. Spears accepted an invitation to visit Death Valley to write about the region and explore its borax mines. Spears, the first professional journalist to visit, photograph, and report on the region, provided the American reading public with an engaging and informed account of Death Valley and its surrounding desert country. Through nineteen chapters, Spears examines the 20-mule teams used in borax mining, freighting in the rugged desert landscape, and various desert characters--including "Desert Tramps" and a California bear hunter.

Long considered an important literary and regional history of Death Valley and a primary source of information, Illustrated Sketches of Death Valley and Other Borax Deserts of the Pacific Coast will appeal to enthusiasts of the region and of the American West.

              Book Description

In a panoramic narrative John Wilmerding has brought together individual studies of the artists who painted Mount Desert Island off the Maine coast in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Wilmerding demonstrates that Mount Desert has had an enduring appeal for artists and visitors, much like other great sites of national geography, such as Yosemite, Yellowstone, and Niagara Falls. This coastal region of the northeast captured the imaginations of several generations of American painters, and each generation attached its own meaning to the island. These changing meanings reveal both the history of American landscape painting as well as cultural concerns of each era. As Wilmerding states, "Part of the island's continuing allure is that a fixed point of geography can inspire such diverse visual responses and stylistic treatments as the romantic realism of the early Hudson River painters, the crystalline luminism of artists in the middle of the nineteenth century, the variants of Impressionism practiced at century's end, and the new modes of representation in the twentieth, approaching aspects of abstraction."

The figures most central to this chronology are the pioneers, Thomas Doughty, Alvan Fisher, and Thomas Cole, who generalized and romanticized nature in their visits of the 1830s and 1840s, Fitz Hugh Lane in the 1850s, and Frederic Edwin Church in the 1850s and 1860s. Each drew and painted extensively at Mount Desert. In particular, they recorded the northern sunsets in forms that made Americans give serious thought to the significance of their country's geography and its destiny. Other artists, among them William Stanley Haseltine, Sanford Gifford, John Marin, Marsden Hartley, and, more recently, Richard Estes, continued to come to Mount Desert and to find in its light, air, and rock formations the kind of scenery that inspired a rich diversity of visual expressions.

              5 out of 5 stars poetic scholarship!.......2007-05-19

The Desert is No Lady is a book of careful scholarship about a much neglected subject, and is also a work of love. The authors have gathered the voices of 19th and 20th century women -- Hispanic and Native American as well as white -- who found their inspiration and muse in the severe but haunting beauty of the southwest US desert. The voices that emerge here collectively invite the reader into her or his own "center of boundless desire" (p. 29). The voices woven together unify body, place, and spirit in evocative detail. This book is an academic resource, but is far more than that: it is pure poetry!

This book has wonderful natural images of Africa at its best. The more beautiful ones are possibly not for beginners although the zebras cushion covers are simple and very effective - some of my first silk paintings were inspired from this book - the cheetahs are fantastic as are the wonderful scenes of the Africa including murals of zebras running along plains. As good as Susan Moyers books. No abstract art is included - all the images are natural and life like - the designs include scarves, cushion covers, murals and lamp shades. This book offers images that I have not seen in other silk painting books - well worth the buy but the instructions may not always be clear for beginners

Just when you thought you knew it all!Who doesn't remember The Brady Bunch?Whether you loved them or considered them a corny '60s suburban clich, the Bradys (through the wonders of reruns) have become America's first family of television.Even if you were just a casual viewer you probably remember Cindy's cute lisp and pigtails, Jan's middle-child popularity/identity crisis, and Bobby's fear of heights.Toss in Marcia's peculiar obsession with Desi Arnaz Jr. and Greg's wacky "music" and there are plenty of reasons we could all relate to the pains of growing up dressed in groovy bell-bottoms with Astroturf for a backyard lawn.In this fun and challenging trivia book, Lauren Johnson tests the actual limits of your Brady knowledge.Johnson knows the Bradys better than anyone. How Brady savvy are you?Can you answer the following questions? * Who designed the Brady house? (LEVEL ONE) * Who said, "I'm looking for a wig"? (LEVEL ONE) * Who was "Harried and Hopeless"? (LEVEL TWO) * Why did the boys put itching powder in the girls' sleeping bags? (LEVEL TWO) * Carol and Marcia performed a song and dance from which musical? (LEVEL THREE) * Who said, "I am a little Sunflower, sunny, brave, and true. From tiny bud to blossom, I do good deeds for you"? (LEVEL THREE) With three difficulty levels and 1,500 questions, this book is sure to delight and amuse Brady maniacs everywhere.Just in case some fans (or closet fans) need assistance, the author has included a summary of each of the 117 episodes. When you've finished this book, you'll be an expert too. There's never been a better opportunity to get on the inside track in the Brady Bunch craze!

                4 out of 5 stars strangely amusing.......2001-01-14

Hilarious - I haven't watched the "Brady Bunch" in years, but I was a bit startled by the way it all came back after reading a few questions. Why do I remember this stuff? Why does the author? As absurd as it is, the memories of such a dumb TV show are great fun.

                5 out of 5 stars VERY IMPRESSIVE!.......2000-12-28

It is amazing how much fun information that the author has packed in this book!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT FUN FOR EVERYONE!.......2000-12-19

This book is great! It's a perfect book for parties, car trips, etc. There are questions for everyone at all levels of Brady knowledge. It's so much fun watching others in angst as they desperately try to remember the answer to a question, and even more fun watching someone rushing to answer a question when they swear they don't remember much about the show! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

5 out of 5 stars Wow!, Brady experts beware........2000-12-03

When I got this book I figured I knew every trivia question there was for the Brady's. I was wrong. Where did she come up with this stuff? There is so much detail in this book and it's organized in a way that makes it something you can browse or pass around for trivia questions. I was also impressed with how everything tied back to the episode with all the details from each show. A cool book for any Brady fan.

                Book Description

It's a summer night on the plains, a night for dreamers and lovers, a night for drive-in movies. In Chickasa, Oklahoma, and Turkey, Texas, Main Street is dark and shuttered. Out on the prairie there flickers the first reel of the movie. This is the boundless nostalgia of the drive-in, of the serene confidence of the United States in the 50s, when Korea was a far-off land and Vietnam wasn't on the map, General Dwight D. Eisenhower was in the White House, and Edward Hopper captured the spirit of the age. It was remembered again in The Last Picture Show and by the Boss, Bruce Springsteen, when he sang My Home Town. There were 6,000 drive-ins across the Union then. There are 547 now. Idaho has The Spud, Texas had The Trail, and even New York City has the walk-in show in Bryant Park. The drive-in was born in 1933 in Camden, New Jersey, when an enterprising gas station owner projected a movie on his wall to entertain impatient customers. Since then the drive-in has had its ups and downs, latterly torn down to be replaced by shopping malls and tatty developments. But that zeitgeist will not die, and in Drive-Ins Joan Liftin has rung again the town bell that remembers it. There are many who will agree with her, and shake their heads at the loss of the apparent innocence of that age. This is now a very different world in which her photographs recall the ephemeral evenings at the drive-in, of the heart-breaking back row kisses, of the beer-topped coolers and popcorn, and the giant images of Monroe, Clift, and Gable bestriding the wilderness. Joan Liftin took these photographs over 20 years, some off-hand, some desultory, some with a startling, mesmeric evocation of what the drive-in was and meant to a generation of Americans.

                An American Pastime
                Review by Jane Gottlieb
                PDN, Photo District News
                October, 2004

With her new book, Drive-ins, veteran photojournalist Joan Liftin chronicles a night in the life of an American institution in Chickasha, Oklahoma and Turkey, Texas; in Coxsackie, New York, in Meadow Bridge, West Virginia and a slew of towns where locals use the thin excuse of a second-rate movie to assemble under a summer sky.

"There is a certain spirit," says Liftin. "Not much is closeted like in a regular movie theater. People can drink and smoke and boo and honk their horns. It's a bastion of freedom. People at drive-ins cut through a lot of hypocrisy."

The book, shot in color, opens in the hour or so before the first preview. A shirtless man on a motorcycle roars in to the Starlite Theatre in Brenham,Texas; kids wrestle on the grass in front of the screen of the Northfield in New Hampshire. A couple doesn't wait for dark to smooch in the front seat. And while it is still light, Liftin captures the all-American settings

The book paints a picture that comes close to capturing the motion on-screen and off...audience and screen artfully come together. We see the "Bates Motel vacancy" sign on the giant screen. Our glimpse at a couple taking in Psycho is limited to dashboard and male hand on bare female leg. The meeting of art and life captures the very recipe of seduction and terror in the Hitchcock classic. Snow White, Marlon Brando,Kevin Bacon and Arnold Schwarzenegger also play with our sensibilities.

But plenty of her shots in the dark leave out the screen. Liftin says her book is about the patrons, not movies or architecture. "I had real sympathy for these people."

                5 out of 5 stars Drive-ins.......2004-08-07

The photographs in Drive-ins are both beautiful and funny and provide a unique insight into a peculiarly American cultural phenomenon that's quickly disappearing.

"It's a crash course for the ravers, it's a drive-in Saturday.' So sang David Bowie, circa 1973, in his celebrated love letter to American pop culture in general and teenage romantic rituals in particular. He was expressing no more and no less than the enduring mythology of drive-in cinemas: as a rite of passage, where teenagers could goof off in their parents' cars, drink beer, smoke joints and make out like bunny rabbits.

... By now, another 30 years on, the romance of the drive-in is but a dim memory, the stuff of nostalgia fabricated by baby boomers thinking back fondly to the furtive moments of their adolescence. But those memories will be stirred

                Book Description

Nobody knows road food like Neil Zurcher. After all, in 20 years on the go as a TV travel reporter heÕs enjoyed a lot of meals away from home! In his third book of "One Tank Trips" (based on his popular FOX8 TV news series), Zurcher shares the most delicious destinations for short getaways from Cleveland and Northeast Ohio.

These include OhioÕs remaining drive-in restaurants, authentic diners, unusually scenic picnic spots, pick-your-own berry farms, restaurants with unusual specialties or themes, farm stands, cheese factories, restaurants that accommodate special diets, annual food festivals, and more. All destinations are just a "One Tank Trip" awayÑmeaning that Clevelanders can easily reach them on a tank of gas or less.

The menu includes a roster of where to find the very best . . . fresh fish, ice cream, pies, chicken wings, hamburgers, steaks, pizza, chili, ribs, burritos, corned beef, bison, ostrich, and other favorite foods.

                5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......1999-12-03

In the preface, the author mentions that the book is about "food & fun". That's true, however, to me, the main appeal is his diligent research into, sometimes obscure, areas, in order to find restaurants(and derivatives thereof) that combine good food, fine service, and fascinating atomosphere! The reader will be amazed to find so many interesting places, nearby, that they have not yet discovered. All places included in the book are in Ohio, with the exception of a few in Pennsylvania, Indiana, New York, Michigan, and Ontario, Canada. Mr. Zurcher takes you on journeys which include special places, such as...an 18th Century tavern that serves food from a 200 year-old recipe...a 19th Century bed-and-breakfast/tavern that includes beautiful and serene landscapes...an honest-to-goodness fifties drive-in restaurant with a chronologically-correct juke box(I loved it!)...a diner inside a Harley-Davidson dealership...a restaurant that features an antique-car museum and antiques in general...a tuba museum/restaurant...fine Amish restaurants(discover Amish history while in the area)...an actual castle with a restaurant that serves exotic food such as buffalo and ostrich...tearooms with elegant atmosphere and beautiful, rustic surroundings. He, in addition, provides a virtual "who's who" of purveyors of pizza, ice cream, cheese, hot dogs, popcorn, and more! Neil Zurcher's presentation is clever, concise, and really easy to read...the book will entice you onto the road. For a modest amount paid for the book, the reader receives a whole lot more than a "tankful" of memories and interesting dining experiences...TED DRISCOL

5 out of 5 stars Neil Zurcher's One Tank Road Foods.......1999-11-26

Having read Mr. Zurcher's two previous One Tank Trip books and having found them thoroughly enjoyable I approached this third edition with great delight. It certainly did not dissapoint me. I found the publication absolutely entertaining and full of great stories and places to eat. What a great surprise to open what I thought to be a book on restaurants and find myself laughing from cover to cover. The way the author intertwines reality with good old front porch stories and humor is nothing short of editorial wizardry. The book is a masterpiece of education and entertainment. I personally will not only use it as a where to go to eat bible but will undoubtedly re-read it for it's entertainment qualities. I highly reccomend the book and think it should be in every home, car and christmas stocking. Thank you Mr. Zurcher for the hours of delight. I can't wait for the next one.

1 out of 5 stars See the movie instead.......2006-04-10

This book corresponds to the movie of the same name that was also released in 1988. Starring Corey Haim as a teen who just flunked his driving test, and the then unknown actress Heather Graham as the blonde of his dreams, this story is quite similar to other teen comedies of the 1980s. Funny but not hilarious; wacky but not wacked out, the book and story can be easily taken in over an afternoon. Many American teenagers probably have some first-hand experience with the adventures of the protagonist. Overall, this book is not worth the time to read it.

From the supplier: The dynamics of the Chinese insurance industry are still influenced by the unique business and cultural practices of Chinese society and lack the sophistication and choice that characterize the insurance industry in the West. However, things are changing and businesses are beginning to focus more on workplace safety and loss management as part of a trend toward improving risk management techniques. The industry still is dominated by the People's Insurance Company of China.
