New Country Houses

Amazon.com
Country and Modern is a study in fascinating contradictions. Espousing "rural minimalism," this photo-heavy volume demonstrates that the urbanite who seeks the spirit-renewing comfort of a country aura need not fill the home with kitschy clutter. The rugged simplicity of these interiors is derive partly from the popular shabby-chic aesthetic and partly from the timelessness of vernacular tradition before layers of artifice overtook home decor. Surprisingly, the sleek language of modernism--clean lines, downplayed color, unfussy materials such as metal, concrete, brick, and natural- finished wood, and pared-down or altogether absent accessorizing--lends itself willingly to the uncluttered rusticity of the stark, daring concept of modern country. With eloquent but appropriately minimal text, the book lets the photographs speak for themselves. What these images of wholesome sophistication say is that such country retreats would be as suitable in strictly urban dwellings as in actual country domiciles. --Amy Handy
Book Description
Dinah Hall’s Modern Country brings contemporary style to country design. This vision of modern country is softer, subtler, more rooted in reality, and easier to live with. A rich source of visual inspiration, Modern Country features ravishing photographs of interiors throughout the world and a host of ideas for creating sleek contemporary dwellings with a comfortable country feel. Dinah Hall, who writes regularly on interiors, is also the author of Ethnic by Design.
Customer Reviews:
i read it over and over and over.......2003-09-08
i find this book to not only be a beautiful, but also a very inspirational book. i have read this book countless times, and every time i scan through it, i find something new... or it gives me new ideas... i think this is a great book for someone who knows what they like and are looking for inspiration and new ideas. I really love this book....
Coffee Table Philosophy.......2001-08-22
"Country and Modern" has some stunning photos in it and some rather heavy-handed philosophy about the responsibility of connecting with your environs via design, etc. If you're designing a home in a non-urban setting and want to do a lot of thinking about these connections, it might be useful.
Many photos emphasizing the "benign neglect" design principle -- so if you're up for trying to pull off an interior using weathered siding, a plain worn chair, and an apple, you may find some inspiration here.
Too Shabby, not enough Chic.......2001-07-03
Shabby Chic is the antithesis of modernism and this book tries (but fails) to bring the two styles together. The text is sparse and the photos are in some cases too small and lack significance to the overall concept of the book. The contrast of modernism versus country style was just too obvious in my opinion. The subtle minimalist styling of many rooms was bowled over by the rustic colors and textures. The combination makes the rooms uncomfortable to both modernists and traditionalist alike. If you want an inspiring decor book, try "White Hot" by Tricia Guild. It explores many of the same ideas through color, texture and nature. As for "Country and Modern", I returned it.
Well i never............2001-06-15
When I (I being Tim) thought, oh its another trashy book, just another design book i never realized what was in store.. I flicked through the pages and then it struck me....this must be something different. I hastily brought the book and quickly ran home,my heart beating i rhythm with my faootsteps. I ran in removing the plastic wrap and then I flicked through the gorgeous pages, pictures and writing. I read every word over and over again till i could mesmorise it..... To describe the book i could only say pulse raiseing, delicious and absolutely scrumptious!!!!! Most nights i creep out of my bed without waking dear Janet and creep down to the cellar. There i remove this book from its place on the shelf and ever so secretely recite it. Oh such ectasy!!!!!!
A stunning book in every respect........2000-05-22
This has to be the best book of its kind currently on the market. The author has a superb sense of style, and has produced something that will stand the test of time.

Book Description
Enthusiasts of Chinese porcelain and American commercial history alike welcomes this study of the porcelain dishes made in China for Americans in the 18th and 19th centuries. The tea, yardgoods, and opium trade set the scene for commerce that brought this porcelain to the United States. Prominent families from Maine to South Carolina and West to Mississippi and California are represented with family crests, initials, names, or original design decorations. The original owners include George and Martha Washington, John and Abigale Adams, Thomas Jefferson, John Jay, DeWitt Clinton, Elias Hasket Derby, among the well known of the time, and many less famous owners of beautiful services. The decorations are divided into styles with armorial crests, monograms, eagles, marine scenes, Masonic emblems, portraits, floral decorations and include the mass-produced patterns: Canton, Fitzhugh, Rose Medallion, butterfly and variations. Fifteen styles of American eagle and four styles of Order of the Cincinnati decoration are illustrated. Students of American history, antiques, and Chinese ceramics will all find the material fascinating.

Export Porcelain.......2007-01-11
The book was well written and illulstrated. I was interested in dating china by transition in design of covers and handles. The book illustrated the very best in export porcelain. I would have liked more discussion of how a quality peice is differentiated from an inferior piece. Tobacco leaf commkands a premium in the market but I do not find it that attractive. I wouod also like to see more information on border types and figures on the china throughout the period.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book on photoblogs; poor on setup instructions.......2007-06-13
I found this book to be a very good overview of photoblogs with plenty of online examples and great tips and techniques. I did not need to signup with Nexcess.net to setup my photoblog since I already have my own ISP with Movable Type 3.35 installed. Unfortunately, I was not able to get the templates and skins (offered as a free download from the book's website) to work, even though I followed the instructions step-by-step. The book's website has not been updated for a while and there's no documentation or forums to help potential photobloggers troubleshoot installation or blogging problems.
There are a lot of great photographers using MT for their photoblogs but there is a dearth of documentation on how to create a photoblog with MT. I was really hoping this book would feel this void.
This is a great book about photoblogs and is inspirational. Unless you signup with Nexcess.net, which is kind of expensive, I would recommend not using Movable Type to create your photoblog. There are a couple of other photoblog tools out there that seem easier to install and to customize. I would give this book three stars but for its lack of support for those who don't use the recommended ISP, I am giving it two stars.
Room for improvement.......2007-01-29
This book isn't bad. It covers a wealth of material and gets into a fair about of detail on how to set up a photoblog, mostly on the suggested Nexcess.net.
This is fine should you choose this route, as you will have all the information on how to do that.
What could help the reader is a better organization of the material presented to keep one from having to go back and forth between pages to take in the examples presented. This will probably happen in the next edition.
Other than that, I admire the author's talent, knowledge, and enthusiasm for photography and blogging.
Good initial ideas but then a let down.......2006-11-05
There were a couple of good ideas in the book but then I felt it became an installation guide for using Movable Type.
Great Photographer, Terrible Book.......2006-08-21
As someone who makes a living structuring information for maximum usability, I have to say that this book and the accompanying website are frustrating, maddening, and pretty much useless unless you're willing to sign up for the hosting deal with the author's suggested web host.
Some of the most glaring errors include:
1) Placing content that should be relegated to sidebars (i.e., the section on signing up for TypeKey authorization) right in the middle of crucial instructions for setting up Movable Type on your system. It breaks up the flow of information, and forces the reader to flip back and forth several times to ensure that she hasn't missed a crucial step.
2) Files at the accompanying website are only available as Windows executables. I'm a fairly savvy Mac user, so I knew enough to drag the .exe files to Stuffit Expander to open them, but how many other Mac users might miss this crucial step? Make the files available as .zip or .tar.gz files for maximum compatibility.
3) Workflow inefficiencies: how efficient is it that the reader is forced to create a new blog after installing the author's blog templates? Why can't these templates be applied to the default photo blog that is created when Movable Type is initially configured?
While I'm sure the rest of the book has some useful information -- I particularly liked Jamieson's photo assignments - I'm so thoroughly frustrated with the installation/configuration instructions and information design of the book that I can't help but give it a negative review.
This is but the first edition of the book - do yourself a favor and wait for version two, or check the website at createyourownphotoblog.com to see if an errata section is made available.
New to photo blogging and have a basic understanding of HTML then this book is for you.......2006-05-20
Photo blogging has been around for a couple years now and is starting to be recognized as a tool for photographers to draw attention to their work. If your already familiar with HTML then this book will make sense to you. If you are not familiar with HTML then this book will be difficult at times understanding the terminology and HTML coding.
There are some photography tips here that will be useful to the beginner photographer. It covers f stop, depth of field, exposure, the thirds rule and understanding composition. For the more experienced photographer there is nothing of substance as far as technique. However photography technique is not the true intention of this book.
The book discusses the basic demographic of a photo blog user and visitor and how to attract the desired demographic to your photo blog. The book also covers conceptual ideas about design and publishing of your blog.
Also covered are things like using tags within your site to get better rankings in search engines. The basic use of CSS. Flickr which is an online community for photo bloggers, design templates and uploading your blog to a hosting service, updating the photos, and basic user interface site security.
What this book does very well is cover the concept of photo blogging, how to setup a photo blog and different tools and photo blogging hosting sites. It contains ample snap shots of the different software discussed. It also has many outstanding photographs and if covers the subject of photo blogging from site concept to finished product very well (admittedly a blog site is never really complete).
The draw back to this book is that it assumes that you are using nexcess and the templates what you can download are fairly proprietary to nexcess. This can be difficult if you are using another hosting service and they do not support the types of templates you have created from the templates you downloaded using movable type interface rather then a WYSIWYG or other text editor.
In closing this book will be of great use to the photographer with a basic understanding of HTML and has an interest in web page/photo blog design. It is easy to read and is formatted very nicely.

Worth it just to learn about Picasa..........2005-10-19
While no one would mistake me for a professional photographer, I do enjoy playing around with my digital camera. I figured it'd be worth taking a look at Peter Bauer's book Create Your Own Digital Photography - 5 Easy Projects In Full Color. This book gets high marks on a couple of different fronts.
Contents: Introduction; Capture Your Life Visually; Create Your Image Albums; Taking The Next Step: Improving Your Pics; Cards, Calendars, and Other Creative Projects; Advanced Image Editing; Index
This isn't a book that's going to get an intermediate photographer excited. The material is geared towards the person who just bought a digital camera and is a little overwhelmed by all the options, settings, and terminology. Bauer dispenses with all the insider jargon and advanced subjects (like f-stops, apertures, and the like), and proceeds to get the digital newbie comfortable with their new-found capabilities. A little time spent with this book before heading out on your first photo safari will pay big dividends in dramatically better pictures. Once you get past the "how do I take the picture", then you're ready for the rest of the book. That covers how to use computer software to manage your photos and improve the composition and quality. Using Photoshop Elements and Picasa, you'll learn to do the vast majority of tasks that most people need to manage. And once you get those basics down, you'll be well-equipped to explore the finer points on your own. Throw in a CD with sample software and practice photos for the projects, and it's a very nice package.
Personally, I'd seen most of this material in other books. But this book gets a five for turning me on to Picasa. I was aware that Picasa was Google's foray into digital imaging "stuff", but I was under the (mistaken) impression that it was just another site to store photos. Shows you how much I know. Picasa is free software that does a fantastic job of organizing your pictures on your computer, as well as offering a number of *very* nice features for manipulating images (like cropping, color correction, and other handy things). These are all things I *used* to do with Paint Shop Pro. No more... I went to Picasa's site, downloaded the software, and I'm hooked.
If you're still wondering how to use your camera or how to do things with the pictures once they're on your computer, this book is an excellent choice. And I'll personally be forever indebted to the author for Picasa... :)
From the Author.......2005-10-05
If you're brand new to digital photography -- or photography in general -- this is the book that'll get you up and running. (If, on the other hand, you're an experienced photographer, consider giving this book as a gift and check out my other books, including "Photoshop CS2 for Dummies.") Since every digital camera ships with its own software, and those software packages vary widely, we get you started with digital photography using the program Picasa, free from Google.com. Once you're familiar with the basics (using Picasa), you'll find your camera's own software easier to understand and use. The final part of the book introduces you to the very powerful (and very affordable) Photoshop Elements software. That's when you get to see the true power of digital imaging, where you learn just how easy it really is to take a "snapshot" and turn it into a "masterpiece." I hope you enjoy reading and using this book as much as I enjoyed writing it.
Best regards and happy shooting!
Pete Bauer

Book Description
Specially written for the digital camera, Shoot Your Own Erotic Photographs shows you how to create a sensual, artistic portfolio celebrating your partner and the intimate encounters you share. Written by Tom Ang, who photographed the most recent edition of The Joy of Sex, with Wendy Ang, this book helps you compose both couple shots and solo portraits, set up the shoot, including lighting and camera work, establish the right ambience and mood, and live out your own and your partner's fantasies.
Customer Reviews:
Buyer beware!.......2006-07-31
I've bought a number of Tom Ang's books, and in general find them to be informative, well written, and good value for money. This particular book, however, is none of the aforementioned.
I bought Tom & Wendy's previous book "Erotic Home Photography: How to Take Your Own Nude Portraits", thinking it would be a good introductory book on the subject. I was quite disappointed to find that the writing was poor, the subject matter not as advertised, and the photography of an extremely low standard. Indeed, the author even admitted that the photo's had been done in a day, just before the book was due to go to press.
I decided to buy this book, thinking that it would be an improvement on the other one, that the authors had learned from their previous book, and that this one would be a significantly better work. I was sadly mistaken. The book is merely a re-titled, soft cover version of "Erotic Home Photography: How to Take Your Own Nude Portraits".
While it's the author's prerogative to title a book any way he or she pleases, I can't help but feel that in this case the exercise was nothing more than a trick to squeeze an extra dollar out of the unwary with the absolute minimum amount of work on the authors' part.
Under normal circumstances I'd be happy to recommend this book to others, I simply can't say that this is a good buy.

Book Description
Thomas and Maurice’s
Managerial Economics teaches students how to use microeconomic theory to analyze business decisions. In a clear and engaging writing style, Christopher Thomas carries on the tradition he and Charles Maurice shepherded for eight previous editions in the 9th edition. The 9th Edition explores the current market forces that create both opportunities and constraints for business enterprises. The book has enjoyed success in part because of its mid-level of rigor, clarity of presentation, and end-of-chapter material.

This book presents the basics of microeconomics for management students. The concepts--consumer demand theory, demand forecasting, market structure, competition, etc.--are clarified by case studies and illustrations relevant to the South Asian context and to the world of business.
Book Description
The 6th Edition continues to emphasize the economic way of thinking about business decision making in order to show how market forces create both opportunities and constraints for business enterprises: both profit-maximizing and nonprofit firms. A number of new and revised features make the book a more user-friendly and self-contained teaching and learning resource.

A great textbook, loved it or may be was the teacher :).......2007-03-10
Enjoyed the text, consise, lots of excersises, loved the math sections at the end of each chapter.
Agree on the Last Assessment.......2005-11-09
The book is very hard to read because it does jump around alot, so I agree with the last review. I have to add though that in class as a professor Chris Thomas is much better, though his testing is very hard.
Content-of the book-writers style & publishers choices.......2005-09-13
Dealing with Amazon is GREAT! The BOOK in and of itself is horrible! The author speaks in circles and jumps topics. To give you an idea of how unorganized he is... Chapter 9 will tell you to go back to chapter 3 to review a graph for the topic in 9. Why the publisher could not just take the 2 inches of space and drop the graph into 9 is beyond me. If you have a choice to choose a book for Micro Economics for your MBA. VOTE AGAINST THIS ONE! IT IS THE MOST DRY AND ANNOYING BOOK I HAVE EVER HAD THE DISPLEASURE OF " HAVING " TO READ! I think I might burn it when the class is over!
Managerial Economics.......2005-07-07
I would give it a very good review as the book arrived just in time for my class. Although it almost took the full 14 days to ship. But overall very good rating
