Circadian Clocks and Their Adjustment - No. 183 (CIBA Foundation Symposia Series)
CIBA Foundation Symposium Manufacturer: John Wiley & Sons ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0471943053 |
Book Description
Circadian Clocks and Their Adjustment Chairman: J. M. Waterhouse 1995 Organisms ranging from unicellular algae to humans display biological rhythms reflecting their ability at the molecular level to keep track of time. In humans, the circadian clock signals when to sleep and wake, adjusts body temperature and modifies cardiovascular, renal, digestive and other functions, correspondingly directing the production of certain hormones, of which the pineal hormone melatonin is the best known. Research on a range of organisms is revealing an increasingly coherent picture of the molecular and cellular basis of biological clocks and the internal pacemakers that generate the rhythms and are synchronized with time cues in the environment such as the lightdark cycle, physical activity, drugs, diet and social factors. This book covers recent advances in all major aspects of research on circadian clocks. The genetic and molecular basis of the clock in Neurospora crassa is described and the molecular background to recent work showing that individual isolated neurons from Bulla gouldiana can act as pacemakers is investigated. The organization and operation of circadian pacemakers in vertebrates is dealt with in the hamster and the rat; the results and implications of studies of the neuronal pathways involved in the circadian timing system, the intrinsic rhythms generated by the suprachiasmatic nuclei and cross-genotype transplantation of the suprachiasmatic nuclei in the tau period mutant hamster are considered. A discussion of current knowledge of the anatomical, genetic and neurochemical pathways involved in photic and non-photic entrainment in the hamster leads on to the changes that occur with ageing. Aspects of the book with direct relevance to humans include chapters on the importance of circadian time in clinical pharmacology and on the adjustment of the pacemaker by light and melatonin treatment in disorders such as shift-work dyssomnia and jet lag. The Redox State and Circadian Rhythms
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792364538 |
Book Description
This book addresses the redox balance in cells and organisms, which is of paramount importance in biology. In addition, a generally overseen circadian modulation is underlined. The balance involves, on the one hand, free radicals and reactive oxygen species and, on the other hand, scavengers capable of neutralizing their effects. This balance is crucial for life, since free radicals are required for some basic reactions (such as the activation of an enzyme involved in DNA synthesis) and since their excess leads to various toxic effects, most notably cancer. Different scavengers can be distributed at various times of the day, their amount possibly peaking at particular times. In fact, circadian rhythms may affect amounts of scavengers, amounts of foreseeable free radicals or the effects the latter can exert on a system. Free radicals are produced by some chains of normal metabolism. They are also produced by a variety of environmental stresses, UV light, chemicals, drugs, etc.

Aqueous Systems at Elevated Temperatures and Pressures: Physical Chemistry in Water, Steam and Hydrothermal Solutions
Manufacturer: Academic Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0125444613 |
Book Description
The International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam (IAPWS) has produced this book in order to provide an accessible, up-to-date overview of important aspects of the physical chemistry of aqueous systems at high temperatures and pressures. These systems are central to many areas of scientific study and industrial application, including electric power generation, industrial steam systems, hydrothermal processing of materials, geochemistry, and environmental applications. The authors goal is to present the material at a level that serves both the graduate student seeking to learn the state of the art, and also the industrial engineer or chemist seeking to develop additional expertise or to find the data needed to solve a specific problem.
The wide range of people for whom this topic is important provides a challenge. Advanced work in this area is distributed among physical chemists, chemical engineers, geochemists, and other specialists, who may not be aware of parallel work by those outside their own specialty. The particular aspects of high-temperature aqueous physical chemistry of interest to one industry may be irrelevant to another; yet another industry might need the same basic information but in a very different form.
To serve all these constituencies, the book includes several chapters that cover the foundational thermophysical properties (such as gas solubility, phase behavior, thermodynamic properties of solutes, and transport properties) that are of interest across numerous applications. The presentation of these topics is intended to be accessible to readers from a variety of backgrounds. Other chapters address fundamental areas of more specialized interest, such as critical phenomena and molecular-level solution structure. Several chapters are more application-oriented, addressing areas such as power-cycle chemistry and hydrothermal synthesis. As befits the variety of interests addressed, some chapters provide more theoretical guidance while others, such as those on acid/base equilibria and the solubilities of metal oxides and hydroxides, emphasize experimental techniques and data analysis.
- Covers both the theory and applications of all Hydrothermal solutions
- Provides an accessible, up-to-date overview of important aspects of the physical chemistry of aqueous systems at high temperatures and pressures
- The presentation of the book is understandable to readers from a variety of backgrounds

The SESAME I Experiment, Acoustic Data Processing and Catalog
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423581466 |
Product Description
This is a NAVAL RESEARCH LAB STENNIS SPACE CENTER MS HIGH FREQUENCY ACOUSTICS SECTION report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A320923. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The first Shelf Edge Study Acoustic Measurement Experiment, SESAME I, was conducted August/September, 1995. The experiment took place at the Malin Shelf (56 deg 33' N, 9 deg 0' W) with the objective of determining the effects of solitary internal waves on acoustic fluctuations at the shelf edge. This paper describes the preliminary analysis of the narrow band continuous wave (CW) acoustic data from the three acoustic legs of the experiment. The acoustic data sets were collected using two Data Acquisition Buoy Systems (DABS), the first deployed in shallow water (170 m) at the shelf edge and the second deployed approximately 6100 m down slope in 500 m of water. Acoustic measurements were made over a frequency band of 100 to 2100 Hz with CW tonals broadcast at 150, 400, 800, and 1600 Hz. The signals were transmitted at source depths of 20, 50, and 100 m at multiple ranges from the array. System calibration analysis revealed both systems had low system noise floors and a flat amplitude response from approximately 125 Hz to 2000 Hz for all channels. The shallow-water DABS system had two hydrophones with an amplitude offset; calibration values applied to the data correct for these offsets. System calibrations have been applied to the acoustic results to produce transmission loss values versus source receiver range. Received levels were highest from the 500 m source depth at all frequencies and at both array locations. Both the 20 m and 100 m source depths often had very low signal to noise ratios, limiting the amount of reliable TL data.

Digital Geometry: Geometric Methods for Digital Image Analysis (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Computer Graphics)
Reinhard Klette , and Azriel Rosenfeld Manufacturer: Morgan Kaufmann ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 1558608613 |
Book Description
Digital geometry is about deriving geometric information from digital pictures. The field emerged from its mathematical roots some forty-years ago through work in computer-based imaging, and it is used today in many fields, such as digital image processing and analysis (with applications in medical imaging, pattern recognition, and robotics) and of course computer graphics. Digital Geometry is the first book to detail the concepts, algorithms, and practices of the discipline. This comphrehensive text and reference provides an introduction to the mathematical foundations of digital geometry, some of which date back to ancient times, and also discusses the key processes involved, such as geometric algorithms as well as operations on pictures.Download Description
Computer graphics is about taking mathematical representations of objects and transforming them into visual displays. Digital geometry concerns the reverse process; it is about deriving geometric information from digital pictures. There have been over one thousand papers published in the forty-year history of digital geometry, but until now, never a book that defines and covers the field. Digital Geometry: Geometric Methods for Digital Picture Analysis details the concepts, algorithms, and practices of the field. It is a discipline studied by a huge number of researchers in fields such as digital image processing, medical imaging, robotics, and of course computer graphics. However, digital geometry is relatively new and still emerging as a unique field and the lack of books has made it difficult for researchers in many areas (including applied mathematics) to benefit from this work.Customer Reviews:

Book Description
Between 1930 and 1935, William Faulkner came into full possession of the genius and creativity that made him America's greatest writer of the twentieth century. "As I Lay Dying" is a dark comedy, full of horror and compassion, of a rural Mississippi family bearing the corpse of their matriarch to burial in town. "Sanctuary," a violent novel of sex and social class that moves from Mississippi back roads to the flesh-pots of Memphis, features a sadistic gangster named Popeye and a debutante with an affinity for evil. "Light in August," a near-religious vision of the hopeful stubbornness of ordinary life, is perhaps Faulkner's most moving work. "Pylon," a tale of barnstorming aviators, examines the bonds of loyalty and desire among three men and a woman. All are presented in restored texts as part of The Library of America's new, authoritative edition of Faulker's complete works.Customer Reviews:
