      Book Description

Circadian Clocks and Their Adjustment Chairman: J. M. Waterhouse 1995 Organisms ranging from unicellular algae to humans display biological rhythms reflecting their ability at the molecular level to keep track of time. In humans, the circadian clock signals when to sleep and wake, adjusts body temperature and modifies cardiovascular, renal, digestive and other functions, correspondingly directing the production of certain hormones, of which the pineal hormone melatonin is the best known. Research on a range of organisms is revealing an increasingly coherent picture of the molecular and cellular basis of biological clocks and the internal pacemakers that generate the rhythms and are synchronized with time cues in the environment such as the light—dark cycle, physical activity, drugs, diet and social factors. This book covers recent advances in all major aspects of research on circadian clocks. The genetic and molecular basis of the clock in Neurospora crassa is described and the molecular background to recent work showing that individual isolated neurons from Bulla gouldiana can act as pacemakers is investigated. The organization and operation of circadian pacemakers in vertebrates is dealt with in the hamster and the rat; the results and implications of studies of the neuronal pathways involved in the circadian timing system, the intrinsic rhythms generated by the suprachiasmatic nuclei and cross-genotype transplantation of the suprachiasmatic nuclei in the tau period mutant hamster are considered. A discussion of current knowledge of the anatomical, genetic and neurochemical pathways involved in photic and non-photic entrainment in the hamster leads on to the changes that occur with ageing. Aspects of the book with direct relevance to humans include chapters on the importance of circadian time in clinical pharmacology and on the adjustment of the pacemaker by light and melatonin treatment in disorders such as shift-work dyssomnia and jet lag. Book Description

This book addresses the redox balance in cells and organisms, which is of paramount importance in biology. In addition, a generally overseen circadian modulation is underlined. The balance involves, on the one hand, free radicals and reactive oxygen species and, on the other hand, scavengers capable of neutralizing their effects. This balance is crucial for life, since free radicals are required for some basic reactions (such as the activation of an enzyme involved in DNA synthesis) and since their excess leads to various toxic effects, most notably cancer. Different scavengers can be distributed at various times of the day, their amount possibly peaking at particular times. In fact, circadian rhythms may affect amounts of scavengers, amounts of foreseeable free radicals or the effects the latter can exert on a system. Free radicals are produced by some chains of normal metabolism. They are also produced by a variety of environmental stresses, UV light, chemicals, drugs, etc.

                Book Description

This volume contains evaluated data on the solubility of beryllium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, strontium hydroxide and barium hydroxide in water and in a number of electrolyte and nonelectrolyte solutions in water.
The alkaline earth hydroxides can be divided into two groups depending on the hydration of the solid. First, the sparingly soluble anhydrous beryllium, magnesium and calcium hydroxides, whose freshly precipitated solids are poorly crystalline and show decreasing solubility with aging, and whose solubility in water decreases with increasing temperature. Second, the soluble strontium and barium hydroxide octahydrates that form crystalline precipitates which do not show changes in solubility on aging, and whose solubility in water increases with increasing temperature.

                    Book Description

The International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam (IAPWS) has produced this book in order to provide an accessible, up-to-date overview of important aspects of the physical chemistry of aqueous systems at high temperatures and pressures. These systems are central to many areas of scientific study and industrial application, including electric power generation, industrial steam systems, hydrothermal processing of materials, geochemistry, and environmental applications. The authors goal is to present the material at a level that serves both the graduate student seeking to learn the state of the art, and also the industrial engineer or chemist seeking to develop additional expertise or to find the data needed to solve a specific problem.

The wide range of people for whom this topic is important provides a challenge. Advanced work in this area is distributed among physical chemists, chemical engineers, geochemists, and other specialists, who may not be aware of parallel work by those outside their own specialty. The particular aspects of high-temperature aqueous physical chemistry of interest to one industry may be irrelevant to another; yet another industry might need the same basic information but in a very different form.

To serve all these constituencies, the book includes several chapters that cover the foundational thermophysical properties (such as gas solubility, phase behavior, thermodynamic properties of solutes, and transport properties) that are of interest across numerous applications. The presentation of these topics is intended to be accessible to readers from a variety of backgrounds. Other chapters address fundamental areas of more specialized interest, such as critical phenomena and molecular-level solution structure. Several chapters are more application-oriented, addressing areas such as power-cycle chemistry and hydrothermal synthesis. As befits the variety of interests addressed, some chapters provide more theoretical guidance while others, such as those on acid/base equilibria and the solubilities of metal oxides and hydroxides, emphasize experimental techniques and data analysis.

                    - Covers both the theory and applications of all Hydrothermal solutions
                    - Provides an accessible, up-to-date overview of important aspects of the physical chemistry of aqueous systems at high temperatures and pressures
                    - The presentation of the book is understandable to readers from a variety of backgrounds

This is a NAVAL RESEARCH LAB STENNIS SPACE CENTER MS HIGH FREQUENCY ACOUSTICS SECTION report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A320923. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The first Shelf Edge Study Acoustic Measurement Experiment, SESAME I, was conducted August/September, 1995. The experiment took place at the Malin Shelf (56 deg 33' N, 9 deg 0' W) with the objective of determining the effects of solitary internal waves on acoustic fluctuations at the shelf edge. This paper describes the preliminary analysis of the narrow band continuous wave (CW) acoustic data from the three acoustic legs of the experiment. The acoustic data sets were collected using two Data Acquisition Buoy Systems (DABS), the first deployed in shallow water (170 m) at the shelf edge and the second deployed approximately 6100 m down slope in 500 m of water. Acoustic measurements were made over a frequency band of 100 to 2100 Hz with CW tonals broadcast at 150, 400, 800, and 1600 Hz. The signals were transmitted at source depths of 20, 50, and 100 m at multiple ranges from the array. System calibration analysis revealed both systems had low system noise floors and a flat amplitude response from approximately 125 Hz to 2000 Hz for all channels. The shallow-water DABS system had two hydrophones with an amplitude offset; calibration values applied to the data correct for these offsets. System calibrations have been applied to the acoustic results to produce transmission loss values versus source receiver range. Received levels were highest from the 500 m source depth at all frequencies and at both array locations. Both the 20 m and 100 m source depths often had very low signal to noise ratios, limiting the amount of reliable TL data.

Digital geometry is about deriving geometric information from digital pictures. The field emerged from its mathematical roots some forty-years ago through work in computer-based imaging, and it is used today in many fields, such as digital image processing and analysis (with applications in medical imaging, pattern recognition, and robotics) and of course computer graphics. Digital Geometry is the first book to detail the concepts, algorithms, and practices of the discipline. This comphrehensive text and reference provides an introduction to the mathematical foundations of digital geometry, some of which date back to ancient times, and also discusses the key processes involved, such as geometric algorithms as well as operations on pictures.

*A comprehensive text and reference written by pioneers in digital geometry, image processing and analysis, and computer vision
*Provides a collection of state-of-the-art algorithms for a wide variety of geometrical picture analysis tasks, including extracting data from digital images and making geometric measurements on the data
*Includes exercises, examples, and references to related or more advanced work

Computer graphics is about taking mathematical representations of objects and transforming them into visual displays. Digital geometry concerns the reverse process; it is about deriving geometric information from digital pictures. There have been over one thousand papers published in the forty-year history of digital geometry, but until now, never a book that defines and covers the field. Digital Geometry: Geometric Methods for Digital Picture Analysis details the concepts, algorithms, and practices of the field. It is a discipline studied by a huge number of researchers in fields such as digital image processing, medical imaging, robotics, and of course computer graphics. However, digital geometry is relatively new and still emerging as a unique field and the lack of books has made it difficult for researchers in many areas (including applied mathematics) to benefit from this work.

These mathemaical fields are becoming recently very important.
Because discrete or finite difference methods are essential for solving methematical problem. Geometry, the origin of it is very old,and basically it is not assuming the usage of the computer. So,we need transform Geometry for using the computer.
                                  This book is fairly good.

5 out of 5 stars A great book on Digital Geometry.......2005-08-09

This is the first comprehensive overview of the research in Digital Geometry. It documents over fifty years of a very active research field. Digital Geometry has resulted and accompanied the research in Computer Vision. The scope of this book is very large; it clarifies, summarizes, and unifies the results reported in over 1000 research papers.
This book is very well written.
The introduction is great, since it shows the connection to other research fields in mathematics and computer science. It also clearly defines the basic concepts of Digital Geometry that are the underlying concepts in image processing, computer vision, and computer graphics. Most books in these fields do not define these concepts at all.

I see this book as very suitable for the first part of courses on Image Processing and Computer Vision, since it provides a clear definition of the underlying structure of digital images.
I also strongly recommend this book to graduate and undergraduate students of Mathematics and Computer Science who want a clearly written introduction to the underlying concepts of computer vision and computer graphics.

Between 1930 and 1935, William Faulkner came into full possession of the genius and creativity that made him America's greatest writer of the twentieth century. "As I Lay Dying" is a dark comedy, full of horror and compassion, of a rural Mississippi family bearing the corpse of their matriarch to burial in town. "Sanctuary," a violent novel of sex and social class that moves from Mississippi back roads to the flesh-pots of Memphis, features a sadistic gangster named Popeye and a debutante with an affinity for evil. "Light in August," a near-religious vision of the hopeful stubbornness of ordinary life, is perhaps Faulkner's most moving work. "Pylon," a tale of barnstorming aviators, examines the bonds of loyalty and desire among three men and a woman. All are presented in restored texts as part of The Library of America's new, authoritative edition of Faulker's complete works.

5 out of 5 stars Old Drunk Mellifluous.......2006-05-17

Faulkner has a savage and beautiful voice, if you can call it his voice: it's like some linguistic force comes from nowhere and overwhelms his stories and takes them to places that the novel-form never went before. His writing is wildly modern yet full of ancient, mythic resonances - the Bible, the Greeks - which creates a very large sense of time and history in his work. Events traumatize, ripple across history. At his best (As I Lay Dying, The Sound and the Fury, Absalom! Absalom!), Faulkner is difficult but fascinating, worth our patient reading efforts. He invents new ways of writing for a modernizing world that needs some way to keep contact with the past and the dead, and this is both taxing and exhilarating.

5 out of 5 stars Good Intro to Faulkner.......2003-09-11

I am currently reading Sound and the Fury and it is not an easy read. Fortunately, I started out with this volume and read Sanctuary. If you want to get into Faulkner this is an excellent place to start. It is a great story, shocking though it may be, and gives a good idea of what's to come if you want to delve deeper into WF. Next I read Light in August which may be one of his best. Faulkner is a genius at creating characters and then going into the details of their psyche. Every now and then he gets a little over-indulgent in his wordsmithing but always seems to bring it back home before going too far afield.

Faulkner is the green tea of literature. He's a great story teller but still a bit of an aquired taste. Once you get into his work, though, you'll definitely want more.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best from one of the South's best writers ..........2001-10-14

Faulkner is, without a doubt, one of the South's best writers, and re-reading this collection of novels after many years affirms that belief for me. He was a master of words and I wish we had more Faulkner novels to feast on. Almost no one can measure up to him!

5 out of 5 stars A superb collation and an outstanding value.......2000-05-28

There is nothing quantitative in this volume that you can't get in other editions of Faulkner's work; however, the Library of America copy is to be strongly commended for the clarity of its typeface, its sturdy cloth-bound hardcover, and its designed ability to *lie flat* at each page. The only fault I could find with this volume is that it would be nice to have _The Sound and the Fury_ included in a Library of America edition as well (currently, the Modern Library edition is the best that can be done). I strongly recommend this edition to the serious reader who, familiar with Faulkner, is looking for a reference copy of these works that will not deteriorate over time (did I mention acid-free paper and a cloth bookmark?). Considering the price of each of these titles in paperback, this volume's value to the casual reader speaks for itself; you, too, are advised to invest in this worthy tome.

5 out of 5 stars My Mother is a Fish.......2000-03-30

There are many great books, but I have read only two perfect ones, "As I Lay Dying" by Faulkner and Shakespeare's "King Lear." Lear's "howl" after Cordelia's death is (I think) the high point of English literature and Vardeman's internal dialoge (and chapter heading "My Mother is a Fish") is the purest form of writing expression and the high-water mark of American Literature. If you like to read, there are so many subtle threads that run through "As I Lay Dying." You'll recognize Chaucer, T.S.Eliot, and I think Shakespeare's "Lear." Like Gorky, Faulkner uses common people to expound upon universal themes like betrayal and unrequited love, but he does it better, and looks at it harder, than anyone has before or since.
