Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Work on the New Urbanism.......2003-01-21

The Charter of the New Urbanism not only sets forth a manifesto of what future generations of town planners and residential developers may deem the most significant architectural movement of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, but it does so with clarity, precision, and economy.

This volume is an essential text in an essential field, and should be considered so by municipal planners, developers, builders, architects, and citizens who care about the quality of life in their cities, towns, suburbs, and hamlets.

In addition to rendering their own analyses in compelling and thoughtful prose, McCormick and Leccese have displayed the deftness of master cat herders by wrangling a passel of leading New Urbanists -- by no means the most egregiously agreeable of architectural types -- into presenting their thoughts in a thorough-going and satisfying manner.

The reader who delves into this book and rides it to its conclusion will come away understanding a great deal about how we live today, and how we could -- and perhaps should -- be living.

1 out of 5 stars A very dry treatment of a fantastic topic!.......2001-05-29

This is a very dry and disjointed work. If you are interested in the topic, have a blast and read Suburban Nation and The Geography of Nowhere. Then if you want more, buy Christopher Alexander's works--and savor them.

5 out of 5 stars Architectural Record says:.......2000-09-21

"An important work that defines the tenets of New Urbanism, this book serves as the group's manifesto. The charter illustrates the 27 principles of New Urbanism, from the scale of regions to neighborhoods and buildings, and pairs each with an essay by a different author. Now followers of the movement can use the charter to define their work and detractors can refer to it when presenting their side of the debate. ... Graphically pleasing, the book reads well ... When defining the problems of today's development patterns, the text is clear and seductive. ... The test of the Charter of New Urbanism will be its timeless quality. ..."

5 out of 5 stars You must read this book!!.......2000-08-24

The Charter of the New Urbanism is an absolutely fantastic book. It should be required reading for all planners, architects, public officials, engineers, and citizen activists. It brings together in one book essays from some of today's brightest minds. Andres Duany, Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, Peter Calthorpe, Walter Kulash, John Norquist and others describe the Congress for the New Urbanism's (CNU) positions on many important issues, such and traffic congestion, regional planning, environmental issues, affordable housing, civic art, and of course, curbing urban sprawl. New Urbanism is a highly organized and diverse branch of the "Smart Growth" family tree. They have brought a broad range of people together in forming this book, which shows that the problems of sprawl, environmental degregation, inner city decay, and increasing separation by race and income are "one interrelated community-building challenge."

5 out of 5 stars Charter of the New Urbanism.......2000-07-09

Charter of the New Urbanism should be required reading for every planning commissioner, county commissioner, and anyone else involved in the process of designing communities. The book is a series of 27 essays by prominent new urbanists who explain in detail, copiously illustrated by pertinent photographs and drawings, the principles of the Charter for the Congress for the New Urbanism. The book logically moves through how communities are designed and constructed within levels: The Region (metropolis, city and town; The Neighborhood, district, and corridor; and The Block, street, and building. There are many examples of both old (Alexandria, VA) and new (Seaside, FL) towns that utilize the principles which create beautiful, distinctive, and walkable places that encourage leaving the car in the driveway. The authors thoughtfully and thoroughly describe how, using time tested design, the organization of new communities and infill within old ones can facilitate social interaction by integrating rather than separating land uses. They do so persuasively and without dumbing down the material--it's really quite elegantly written, especially considering that there are 35 contributors in all. There is a selective bibliography with the major recent book titles and classics, such as Jane Jacobs' Death and Life of Great American Cities, for further reading. An index is unfortunately not included, although I would consider this a minor omission, since each chapter/essay is annotated and reasonably short. In addition to local government officials, this book is highly recommended to architects, landscape architects, designers, professional planners, developers, bankers, real estate professionals, and local business leaders. It also should be included as required reading for students in architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, and urban planning. It will become a classic.

From the supplier: Architects, planners and other advocates of the New Urbanist philosophy wrote a charter defining their views on how to redirect design and planning at their Fourth Congress on the New Urbanism. About 200 attended the gathering, which focused on urban infill development, urban growth boundaries and other New Urbanist principals. Historical design style is still a point of contention. Awards were given for New Urbanist projects and plans were made for reports such as New Urbanist concepts' effects on car travel.

5 out of 5 stars Good all in one book for the beginner.......2002-07-14

Getting started with drawing or painting can be overwhelming, especially if your using many of the great books out there to learn by.

This one guides you along very well in that it eases you into the rules of perspective and portraying anatomy in a gentle and easy to absorb manner.

Stan Smith uses simple drawings rather than photographs to explain portraying anatomy, which I found easy to reproduce. This gave me the confidence to continue on and wasn't as intimidating as some so called beginner books can be.

He then follows on with examples of perspective that can go into a little to much detail in some areas, but covers the basics very well.

The composition section was especially helpful as it uses both samples of famous works and simple manikin and object set up to explain proper composition, and he does it in a way that won't be beyond the beginner.

Overall its a great all in one starter book. If you don't want to waste time reading seperate books on each subject then this ones for you.

Lush green scenes alternate with the elegant details of a fine Victorian townhouse to make a sumptuous and stunning picture book.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Classic story comes off wonderfully!.......2007-08-29

This book was an absolute delight! The story of the town mouse and the country mouse is a classic and a goodie, and Jan Brett did a fantastic job retelling it! Rather than having one mouse per, she made her characters into couples! This adds a suggestion of sweet romance that will have the little girls swooning and the boys, of course, gagging (but what can be expected?)

The story goes into surprisingly complex reasons for why the mice move. The way they switch is charming. Post-move, however, they have their various misadventures, and Brett is quick to let us know how the proper mouse couple could have handled the situation. The dialogue is clever and cute, as well as the descriptive prose. As usual, much of the story is said with pictures, but when writing there is a great amount of detail and forshadowing. Best writing from Brett I have seen!

Cute, detailed, and a great length for a long-time read, and the final punchline is clever and hilarious. Plenty of lessons and entertainment right here!

        1 out of 5 stars frightened children.......2007-07-29

What is this impulse to scare kids? The mice in the story are threatened at every turn, from a variety of predators. It's creepy.

        5 out of 5 stars PEEKING ENCOURAGED.......2004-04-18

Children often hear "No peeking!" A clever book designer encourages them to peek in this story of two mice cousins who temporarily trade residences.

Cleverly placed peepholes encourage youngsters to peek and see what new adventure awaits each mouse before turning the page.

Not only is this a fun book, but there's also a moral to the story: There's no place like home!

5 out of 5 stars Classic tale with beautiful illustrations.......2003-11-19

This book tells the "grass-is-always-greener" story of the city mouse and the country mouse. One day, the city mouse wakes up and decide he is unhappy with his lot in life. He and his wife pack a picnic lunch and go off for a holiday in the country. There they meet the country mouse, who is enthralled by the smell of city cheese, and the mice decide to do a house swap. However, they each find that they don't have the skills and knowledge necessary for survival in the other's environment. Attacked by cats and besodden in a thunderstorm, they rethink the arrangement and return home. Very young children may find some of the predators a bit scary, but older children should be able to handle the tension and enjoy the humor as well. The book has about 1100 words.

5 out of 5 stars SWITCHING PLACES =).......2002-11-29

A good moral book. I agree! It talks about how these mouse familys switch places to see how eachother lives and to see what it is like to live like eachother! A GOOD BOOK!

        Book Description

As a brilliant survey of English literature in terms of changing attitudes towards country and city, Williams' highly-acclaimed study reveals the shifting images and associations between these two traditional poles of life throughout the major developmental periods of English culture.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A nice man and I..........2005-08-06

Really like this book. As a rural dwelling, rural upbrought, bumpkin, who nevertheless has had habitual social intercourse with city folk, and cities themselves, it plunged me, through its meditations on history and literature, deeply into the images, signs and languages that have subconsciously impregnated all our imaginations and at which we instinctively grope when trying to make sense of those most fundamental of divisions, rural/urban, modern/tradition, nature/civilisation. Being less versed in English lit than Williams-meister, I found it a bit difficult to keep up at times, but it also whetted by appetite for getting down to some serious literature consumption myself.

If you read it, you won't think about the "countryside" in quite the same way again...which is to say, you'll actaully think about the countryside as a changing cultural notion, rather than not think about it, which has got to be alright.

Wack this on the old bookshelve, and surprise your friends with your hidden marxist-critical-intellectual side. It worked for me.

4 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Literature Students & Scholars.......2000-06-19

Williams' *The Country and the City* is a classic study on the relationship between literature and society. His arguments are original and interesting, and formulate useful, if not necessary reading for later marxist criticisms. Some parts of the book are taken from one of Williams' earlier books entitled *The English Novel From Dickens to Lawrence*. Williams' writing is lucid and accessible, particularly in comparison to other critical texts. Students and Scholars of 19th and 20th literature, and individuals interested in rural/urban literature should definitely be familiar with this text.

          Book Description

During the early 1900s, railroad companies laid tracks across America's open land. In fields of grass beside the new tracks prairie towns grew. The towns prospered amid the golden wheat fields, and grain elevators dominated the skyline. Bonnie Geisert's clear text explores the social and economic life of one of these towns, while the dramas of everyday life can be experienced in Arthur Geisert's panoramic hand-colored etchings. Here is a fascinating view of life in a thriving midwestern town, told with respect and affection for the resilient townspeople, as they work and play, their lives directly affected by the changing seasons.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lovely and loving view of the year's cycle in a small town.......1998-03-08

In _Prairie Town_, the work, play, and socializing of a small community are vividly illustrated in a way to capture the interest of young and old. The finely wrought etchings are _Prairie Town's_ greatest strength. Even adults will enjoy tracing changes in buildings and activities as a small farm town moves from spring to summer to fall to winter. Watching the tree house expand was one of my favorites. Each time a reader goes through the book, he or she will notice new details. The only drawback to this excellent picture book is the occasional use of vocabulary too advanced for the 6 to 8 year olds that would seem to be the book's intended audience. Anyone who enjoyed Geisert's _Haystack_ will find delightful references in _Prairie Town_ to the earlier book. The cycle of the seasons is an ongoing part of all Midwesterners' lives, and the Geiserts' _Prairie Town_ captures that cycle very effectively.

This is more than just another biography of Austen (although it has a bit more background on the Austen and Leigh families than you would necessarily expect in a book of this length. It is well done. The family and their relatives are put into context well for their time and social millieu. What separates this book from many others is that it is very much about what Austen would have used for her eating, drinking, writing etc, and where she would have brought them from.

Susan Watkins has managed to dig up some excellent pictures, many of which I haven't seen before, and are well referenced through the text.

Watkins has a very easy and readable style of writing. This is really very much for the Jane Austen and Regency fan - those who enjoy reading Georgette Heyer will really get a lot out of this book as well.

                    Book Description

The book presents a new theory of expectations called "rational beliefs". Contrary to the standard theory which views the origin of uncertainty as being exogenous to the economic system, the theory of rational beliefs holds that a crucial component of social risk and economic fluctuations is endogenously propagated by variations in the state of beliefs of market participants. One part of the book provides an exposition of the foundation of the theory of rational beliefs. A second part explores the structure of general equilibrium models in which market participants hold rational beliefs. The "Applications" part of the book studies the behavior of asset prices and rates of return on financial assets. It demonstrates that endogenous uncertainty provides a uniform paradigm for the study of economic fluctuations.

                    5 out of 5 stars A looking-forward book on economics.......2000-06-08

Mordecai Kurz offers one of the most important contributions to recent macroeconomics. The book provides a genuine research highway towards the building up of a theory of expectations with both rigour and practical usefulness. The idea or "paradigm" of Rational Beliefs is present in all the papers of this volume. They combine rigourous modelling with insigthful conclusions and provocative questions that look more ambitious than the Rational Expectations research program. This book highlights how important are agents' beliefs and their reactions to observed contradictions between observed values and ex-ante estimates of observable economic variables. With no doubt, this volume is an important tool for academic and non-academic economists. It provides sophisticatesd modelling with insightful interrogants and conclusions that invite to re-think the usefulness of mainstream macroeconomic theory. Its reading is a "must" for every economist or social scientist focused on the analysis of the limitations of human knowledge for decision-making in dynamic and changing environments.
