Book Description

Charles Rose embraces the vast and varied panorama of the American landscape. Sensitive to his sites, the architect recognizes the poetry of every locale and uses his fascination with place as a central character in his designs. Regionalism, a term at times used to underrate architecture that is seen as too parochial or that eschews universal "truths" (most often those of modernism) in favor of a local style, becomes a practice of the highest order in the hands of Rose, one of America's most accomplished young architects. With both the rigor of geometry and a commitment to ecosensitivity, his work is as attuned to the dense urban fabric of New York City as it is to the rural outback of Wyoming. The profile of his award-winning Paintrock Camp in Hyattville, Wyoming, follows the contours of a nearby canyon; Roses's adaptive reuse of an industrial structure in New York City's Chelsea neighborhood preserves the existing streetscape while creating a seamless flow between inside and out; and the shape of his United States Port of Entry project in Del Rio, Texas, was determined by the scorching Texan sun and features sustainable landscapes.

With surprising use of volumes, materials, and geometries, agile movement of spaces, and an active language of planes and lines, Rose creates dynamic, expressive architecture that reminds us that buildings can be both sensitive to their locale and embrace the timeless principles of geometry, material, light, and shadow.

2 out of 5 stars mediocre local architectural works.......2007-09-21

His name was out when he was still married to Maryann Thompson from "Thompson and Rose Architects" days. Now, they are on their separate ways. Maryann Thompson was a visiting faculty at MIT and Harvard and that brought them the works, mostly residential, very regional.

Now, on his separate way in 2000s, he puts together of his works in this book but I don't find much of the consistency compared to his old days with Thompson or any architect of his age. The design got younger and the project scale got bigger. But I still find the actual experience of his space only dwells in the book better than the real time. It is difficult to become a master designer in Architecture, indeed but I wonder if this book is any better than magazines that show residential works. Is it original or inspiring other young architects? I am afraid to say neither. Just another local designer. I suggest anyone pass over this book and look for real masters' works.

BTW, he is not Peter Rose from Harvard GSD. Often people get confused with these two.

5 out of 5 stars Great intro to modern architecture.......2006-03-19

I'm not an architect but I love modern style houses... I also hate blah-blah-blah architecture books... so I loved this book. Beautiful pictures of interesting homes and public buildings. Text that is there is pithy and interesting to read.

I am now going to buy a copy for my nephew who is thinking of becoming an architect. It's fun.

        Book Description

As the world's financial and cultural capital, New York demands the best in innovative architectural design, balancing the pressure to build with the need to preserve the historic fabric of the city. Author Robert A. M. Stern and his colleagues trace the rise and fall of the real estate market, the impact of the designation of historic districts and new zoning on development, and the emergence of new commercial and residential centers. Organized geographically, this survey moves north from Lower Manhattan to Harlem and on to study the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island.

New York 2000 documents the milestones in the city's architectural history--the development of Battery Park City, the rebirth of Harlem and Times Square, the creation of the cultural precinct around the new MoMA, the reclaiming of the waterfront along the East and Hudson Rivers as recreational parkland--and celebrates the achievements of internationally recognized architects including Sir Norman Foster, Cesar Pelli, Richard Meier, and Renzo Piano.

        5 out of 5 stars NYC.......2007-01-16

At 1300 pages this is quite comprehensive and exhaustively researched. NYC has had a real resurgence in skyscraper building in the last ten years or so and many good buildings have been built..like the Time Warner Bldg. the Bloomberg Tower, and the New York Times building..and so far it looks like the world trade center site is going to have some specacular buildings, frankly im still not sure about the Freedom Tower(please find a new name, lord)design but it's so much better than that untenable Libeskind designed, frankly I love the Norman Foster design but whatever, but I digress...as for this book it's fantastic and if you love NYC you will have to have this in you collection, really a complete, thorough book on current architecture in NYC, buy this book you wont be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great Gift Book.......2007-01-03

I bought this book as a gift for my boss who loves both NYC and architecture. He loved it! I looked through it before giving it to him and agree it is a great book. It's $100 in the book stores, so it is a good buy on Amazon for $63.00. Great for anyone who loves NYC.

        5 out of 5 stars QUITE A TOME.......2007-01-22

This book is the very definition of comprehensive, this book really hashes out beautiful Guilded Age New York. It is to be lamented that so many of these gorgeous buildings are no longer extant, but at least these wonderful archival images are available. As you walk around NYC today, you see glimpses of the grandeur that once pervaded the city, but this book conjures up the ghosts of an Age of unimaginable wealth and unparalled craftsmanship. High recommended to one and all.

3 out of 5 stars New York architecture in the late 1800s.......2001-11-18

With over 1100 pages, this book was so difficult to handle physically, that it hampered my enjoyment of this epic-length volume. On the other hand, the book is a bargain in terms of cents per page! Photos average more than one per page; however, the quality of photographic reproduction is frequently very disappointing (even when compared to Stern's 'New York 1900,' which also uses very old photographs). There are approximately 75 floor plans, with most page space used for the less-than-rivetting text. Chapters are divided by building type. A surprising amount of page space is consumed by illustrations of entries in architectural competitions (Union League Club and Cathedral of St. John the Divine).

        2 out of 5 stars I was disappointed........2000-01-04

This period was covered in New York 1900, which provided background material from 1876 and before. Although New York 1880 is longer than New York 1900, it seemed to me to be a padding of what had already been said in a more succinct and more readable way in the first book of the series (NY 1900).As for the length, New York 1880 badly needs an editor.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful fabulous work of scholarship on New York City.......1999-09-22

While it is too heavy to lug around, NY 1880 is an eye popping journey into New York of 120 or so years ago. There are over 1,200 photographs and 99 pages of footnotes. Anyone interested in seeing what this wonderful city was like a generation before the First World War is strongly urged to grab this book. So much of what this book is about is no longer standing - churches, synagogues, clubs, apartments, etc.

Buy it!! This is the best of the 4 books in the series (NY 1880, NY 1900, NY 1930 and NY 1960) with NY 2000 to come in a few years.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully documents buildings of the turn-of-the-century.......2001-11-18

This is an excellent treatment of New York architecture, 1890-1915, divided into chapters by building type. It's substantially thinner than Robert Stern's other books in this series (New York 1880, New York 1930, New York 1960), but there's enough meat here that the reader feels the topic has been fully covered. The book has a particularly attractive page format, with numerous photos that beautifully document the era (averaging approximately one per page). There are also roughly 60 floor plans, although most page space is used for text.

5 out of 5 stars The original and the still the best!.......2000-01-04

This is a groundbreaking work that unearthed the contemporaneous understanding of events that, because of the advent of modernism, was never recorded in books. It has paved the way for more specialized studies, but its breadth of learning and expertise has never been surpassed.

        5 out of 5 stars Indispensable........1999-08-09

The twentieth-century items by which New York City is usually synechdocally identified, the Empire State Building, the World Trade Center and what have you, are arguably just later iconic ornaments set atop the massive base formed during the earlier period covered in this book. The character New York has today was really in good part formed by the turn of the last century, by the structures and systems here presented. Gimlet-eyed Robert Stern and his apparently omnivorous assistants, Gilmartin and Massengale, have sorted, digested and made available enormous amounts of information. _New York 1900_ is an indispensable starting point for architects, historians, preservationists and others serious about understanding the City of the era.

1 out of 5 stars Flat and uninspiring history of a great city........1999-05-19

The book attempts to be more that an architectural history and fails miserably. They tried to use architecture as a way of intertwining the political and social history of the city. Needless to say, this type of scope is best in the capable hands of Robert Caro. In addition to the wooden text, the photographs, while rare, are uninspiring. The publisher produced a well-bounded book, so the most useful place for it would be on a coffee table.

5 out of 5 stars invaluable for anyone interesting in NYC architecture.......1998-07-19

This work (the first in a projected pentology on New York architecture in 1876, 1900, 1930, 1960 and 2000) is a dead-on account of NYC high-style architecture from 1890-1915. A must have.

The massive New York 1960 is the third installment in a series covering the last 100 years of New York architectural history. Weighing almost eight pounds, it's a seemingly endless parade of images and information woven together into a fascinating tale of the changing urban landscape. The combination of political, social, and artistic commentary of the day culled largely from primary sources, along with sharp period photographs, provide a time machine's experience of the city that was. The historic tour begins with lower Manhattan and progresses uptown one neighborhood (and practically one building) at a time. With stories of buildings that were never built, teams of architects fired from projects, and the influence of the mayor's office, this chronicle offers amazing insight into how decisions were made and their impact on the city's life. The implementation of parking meters, the zoning laws to support retail on 5th Avenue, the movement of artists from Greenwich Village to what used to be Coenties Slip to industrial SoHo are a number of examples. For anyone interested in architecture, urban issues, or the history of New York City, New York 1960 should not be missed. --J.P. Cohen

5 out of 5 stars THE DARK AGES OF NYC ARCHITECTURE.......2007-01-22

I guess this book had to be written, it is a series afterall, but it is digusting what kind of buildings were built. Having said that, this is an excellent book and it is scholarly and the images are first rate, but lord these are for the most part terrible buildings that just about ruined the iconic Manhattan skyline, I guess at least we should be glad Jackie O, saved Pan Am from tearing down the breathtaking Grand Central Station, unfortunitely the same cannot be said for Penn Station, I think what you come away with from this book is, greedy developers, awful Mayors and the sinsister Robert Moses, it's a wonder the Empire State Building and Chrysler Building were not torn down.

5 out of 5 stars One of the great series by Robert A. M. Stern.......2007-01-11

on the history of NY's architecture and great buildings.

You should own all of them.

5 out of 5 stars An eight-pound masterpiece of architectural history.......2002-04-18

First of all, the book is just too darned big to handle comfortably. With over 1300 pages, I don't know whether to congratulate the authors on their thoroughness or criticize them for having no sense of self-restraint. This tome could have been divided into three separate volumes, and each would have been a substantial book in itself.

The epic length of the book allows the authors to go into incredible detail. The book is divided into chapters primarily by neighborhood. There are also chapters devoted to the topic of interior decoration, the 1964-65 World's Fair, "Beyond the Boroughs," "Historic Preservation," and "New York and the Arts." The numerous b&w photographs, averaging more than one per page, are stunning.

A chapter titled "Death by Development" walks the reader through the ideology of the era that led to public housing monstrosities, as well as middle-class housing of dubious aesthetic and structural integrity. This same chapter discusses proposals for air-raid shelters, some of which would have had expanses large enough to hold a nine-story building, as well as the 1945 incident in which a US military plane crashed into the Empire State Building. The same chapter shifts to transportation issues, and presents a 1951 proposal for an unconventional "people mover" under 42nd Street, and the beginning of construction in 1972 on the Second Avenue subway (which perhaps, will open sometime in my lifetime). All this in just one of seventeen chapters - gives you some idea of the expansiveness and thoroughness of this book.

Many readers will take special note of the eight pages devoted to the World Trade Center. This book was written before "9-11," and the book's coverage of the WTC is haunting, to say the least.

From our perspective, the era in question (1945-1976) constitutes the "dark ages" of urban planning and architecture. Yet, the beautiful period photographs and accompanying text immerse the reader in the aesthetic mentality of the era. This book is a masterpiece, and maybe later in the day I'll find the strength to move this eight pound book from my table to my desk.

4 out of 5 stars AN excellent resource for Architects and Planners.......1999-05-19

A great book for the coffee table or the library. Concise desriptions of built projects as well as conceptual ideas for the City of New York. Focuses on individual neighborhoods as well as the city as a whole.

                      Book Description

This edition is a penetrating and urgent study of the increasing levels of income inequality in the United States and the world. The erosion of the middle class poses a threat to worldwide economic and political stability, as consumers and their children slowly disappear into growing rates of poverty, crime, and violence. Braun examines the economic plight of all people including those in developing nations where a tiny minority controls much of the wealth, and links this inequality to relationships between Third World nations and multinational corporations. This second edition includes new information on the working poor, Mexico and NAFTA, cross-country perceptions of inequality, mass media and political manipulation, and corporations and their overpaid CEOs.
