5 out of 5 stars California Bungalows of the Twenties.......2002-10-02

I have been thinking of redoing my present home that is only 12 years old..after opening this book, it was like a step back in time, to homes that always had that warm feeling of welcome. It has sparked a number of ideals for some changes inside and out...Two other books that I found helpful are:

"Outside the Bungalow" for gardening
"Inside the Bungalow" for decorating

5 out of 5 stars Great price, nice plans.......2001-03-27

California Bungalows of the Twenties is one of a series of reproductions published by Dover, of house plans. These books are actually exact reprints of original plan books from the turn of the century (1880-1925, roughly). Dover adds little or no modern explanations, just presenting the catalog as it was. So when one looks to review these books, one isn't really judging the modern-day publisher, or editing, or writing. The only modern element is the accuracy of reproduction- in some cases, if pages in the originals that Dover found are damaged or torn, that page is reproduced in the original with the tear, smudge, blot, or hole showing. So to judge the books, one has to compare each one to others of its kind, and then to decide whether the material in it is thorough and complete according to the standards of its time. Since there are several dozen of these catalogs published by Dover, we have the basis for such a comparison.

"California Bungalows" was originally titles "Wilson's California Bungalow." The book starts with a description of what all stock plans include, how much it costs to get duplicates, etc. There's not much about the philosophy of the architect, as in some books. (For example, Radford's Artistic Bungalows says quite a lot about how they went to great lengths to hire architects experienced in the design of small-and-medium sized houses, and about how costs can or cannot be estimated in advance, and so on. This book doesn't have that.) On the other hand, with each individual house, there is description of some of the features of the house, ones that wouldn't necessarily be visible right away, such as that a mantel is made of brick, or the dining room built-in buffet has glass doors and a plate mirror. That's a nice touch. Each description has an estimate of what it would cost to build the house.

The illustrations of each house vary widely - some are photos of finished houses, some are detailed drawings/paintings, and some are just sketches/line drawings. So one doesn't get the same level of information about the appearance of every house. Some of the illustrations are face-on, meaning we see only the front of the house, and can only imagine the sides from the floor plans. On the other hand, for many of the houses, a second illustration is included, of at least one room of the interior. Fully-furnished living rooms are shown; or an illustration of a "typical bathroom" showing what types of fixtures are expected; there's a full-page illustration of "Wilson's Buffet Kitchen" with cut-away view of the cabinets, and complete with a maid in an apron working at the stove. There are several pages showing what styles of dining room buffets, or sideboards, are available, and a section showing doors and locksets you can actually order.

Almost all the floor plans are large and readable, although a few are quite cluttered; with every closet described as broom closet or linen closet, the lettering outstretches the space available. There's also a disconcerting habit, at least to my modern eyes, of referring to the inside chimney as a "thimble" - maybe that was a contemporary usage, but I can't recall seeing it in any other catalog.

In sum: good plans, lots of details on interiors, good ideas on how such houses were furnished; poorer aspect is that some houses are presented only with a sketch. Overall, a good book, one that can give a beginner a good introduction to plan books and to the lifestyles of the period. And the price is great for what you get.

4 out of 5 stars Good Historic Resource.......2000-05-18

This is a reprint of a 1920's bungalow catalogue. This slim (120 page) volume contains plans for some seventy houses. Most examples contain an exterior phot or perspective rendering and a floor plan. Some examples contain interior views. There is also a section on interior components such as dors, hardware, buitl-ins. This part would be a good resource for the person interested in an authentic restoration of a bungalow. I found the floor plans to be the most valuable part of this book, since most current books on bungalows do not contain plans. It is not a great single-source book, howver for the low price it is an excellent complimentrary resource.

5 out of 5 stars A great beginning for any age.......2005-07-21

While aimed at kids, this is a great place to start at any age. If you have been looking at other drawing books, and the books you have seen before only make it harder, your search is over. Mark makes it easy for anyone at any age to get basic drawing skills, the building blocks you need to get started. He teaches the skills that other books make seem complex, without the stress or making it go over your head. His way of teaching is simply the easiest method a person can have to start drawing. And if the books are good, his old show on PBS and his videos are even better. Mark makes drawing so fun kids beg to use the book again and again. He does not start by intimidating you with the completed project, in fact you don't always know what you are drawing until you are done. He takes you one line, circle, or square at a time and before you know it you have a fun drawing. I also reccommend you try the books from Ed Emberly, or check my lists on Amazon for kids that want to learn to draw, or be a cartoonist or animator.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent drawing tutorial for kids and for kids-at-heart.......2002-12-20

I bought this book to relearn how to draw properly. While the book is directed at a young audience, adults-at-heart like me will benefit from the drawing principles such as foreshortening, placement, size, overlapping, shading and shadowing, contour and horizon (plus 1 and 2 point perspectives). My disappointments were that a few later lessons repeat previous lessons and that it uses blank pages after each lesson for you to practice on. I suggest you use a separate sheet of paper to do this so you can pass this book to your kids and their kids and so on and so forth. Despite these, I still rate it 5 stars.

I can now draw simple everyday objects both as cartoons and as realistically as I can. They're not professional quality yet, the book recommends daily practice until they are and that's exactly what I'm doing.

This isn't the only book you should buy though if you want to draw artistically. In my case, I'd like to draw comics-style characters and objects so I can move on to animating them later. I got Tom Alvarez's "How to Create Action, Fantasy and Adventure Comics" (separately reviewed) which is also an excellent how-to book.

5 out of 5 stars Want to learn to draw .....start here.......2000-11-16

Mark Kistler's books are EXCELLENT for anyone who want to learn to draw. The layout of the book is fun easy to follow. Although it is geared toward children it is appropriate for a beginner adult. It starts with simple concepts and gradually builds on what you've already learned. Anyone at any age will be impressed by what you will be drawing in a short amount of time. I bought this book for my children and was so impressed , I started drawing myself. My children love this book and so do I.

5 out of 5 stars Page after page of drawing fun!.......2000-04-11

Mark Kistler's books are wonderful, entertaining books that canteach anyone (of any age) how to draw! I bought his books for my sons, and I quickly became a devoted fan and an avid drawing maniac myself! The book is packed with pages of fun drawings, as well as 'story starters' in which kids are asked to complete the story. Mark's enthusiasm for drawing and story-telling just bubbles up out of the pages of this book. As a mom, I appreciate his encouragement for kids to watch less tv, say NO to violent video games and drugs, and to expand their brain power by getting involved in art. This book is a 'must have' for all teachers and parents who would like to see their kids motivated to express their creativity and feel good about their drawing ability.

5 out of 5 stars After working with this book, even you can draw!.......2000-02-12

If you think you stink at drawing, think again! Mark Kistler shows you how, step by step, to draw pictures that really look like something and tell a story besides!

          Book Description

Perhaps the central issue in the emerging area of inquiry known as lesbian and gay studies is the social constructionist controversy. Social constructionism is the view that the categories of sexual orientation (the category "homosexual" in particular, but also the categories "heterosexual" and "bisexual") are cultural constructs rather than universal categories of nature. According to this view, it makes no sense to say, for example, that Socrates was a homosexual because the cultural kind had not yet been constructed.

Forms of Desire brings together important essays by social constructionists and their critics representing several disciplines and several different approaches to this debate about the history and science of sexuality. The recent social constructionist viewpoint has its contemporary sources in two different schools of thought: continental philosophy as represented by Michel Foucault and the social interactionist school of sociology as represented by Mary McIntosh. The position's more distant ancestry involves the philosophical position known as nominalism. By bringing together papers which discuss different versions of social constructionism, as well as a number of papers critical of the view, the anthology provides easy access to the important essays on the topic and makes more transparent both the position and its genealogy.

Contributors: John Boswell, Arnold Davidson, Wayne R. Dynes, Steven Epstein, Michel Foucault, Ian Hacking, Mary McIntosh, Robert Padgug, Edward Stein, Leonore Tiefer, James Weinrich.

            5 out of 5 stars WHAT A DELICIOUS FEAST!!.......2004-11-20

Sustenance and Desire is a wonderful book to savor by yourself and to give as a gift. Bascove's paintings are luminous, haunting, sensual, and fascinating. Nick and Cinnamon, p 208, is an incredible portrait of a boy with a bird, and the paintings of tomatoes, artichokes and peaches are lush, inspired and yes, erotic! Bascove also gathered a rich variety of poems and prose pieces that range from Jhumpa Lahiri on spices to Nabokov on mushrooms to Proust on madeleines and memory (how many of us have actually read that passage?). There are articles about aphrodisiacs and vegetarianism and cannibalism (!) as well as Barbara Ehrenreich's take on waitressing for tiny tips. Basho, Woolf, Kimic, Milosz, Kingsolver, Oates, Langston Hughes... It's as if Bascove threw a dinner party for the ages, and everyone came dressed in different styles and offering different treats. It's a smorgasbord you'll love and I offer you this taste, a short poem by Les Murray (p 9):
"A fact the gourmet euphemism can't silence:
vegetarians eat sex, carnivores eat violence."

Since humans first began thinking creatively--as opposed to merely procreatively--about sex, men and women have spiced up their love lives with this and that. Every civilization has come up with its own sex objects and sex toys.

From rudimentarily-fashioned objects to the most exquisite ivory carvings of the Far East, eroticism has found expression in a multitude of different forms all displayed here.

The beauty and craftsmanship of these artistic masterpieces bear striking witness to the powers of generation in every culture throughout history.

From works of art to sex toys, historian Hans-Jurgen Dopp analyzes the complexities of human behavior and the secret delights of those who own the little treasures featured in this book.

                Book Description

In the trend of S/M and fetishism in art that Doris Kloster helped popularize with her first self-titled book, Kloster remains the only prominent female photographer to do significant work. Now, with her new book Forms of Desire, Kloster transcends that genre and utilizes her unique position to examine a broader range of erotic expression, pointedly exploring female sexuality in all of its various guises.

With this collection of nudes and portraits, all shot on location, Kloster invites the viewer to experience the rich and varied sexuality of a multi-racial group of strong, adventurous women. The result is a nothing less than a compendium of female sexual expression, exploring different facets of women's sexual natures - from fetishism and role-playing to the use of toys and gender-bending.

As co-founder and editorial director of FAD magazine, Kloster has been walking the cultural edge for over ten years, photographing sex radicals and capturing women's sexual power with her lens. Forms of Desire is her most accomplished work to date; her strongest statement on sexuality, power, and gender.

5 out of 5 stars a truly great book by a wonderful artist.......2004-02-09

doris kloster's one of the most interesting personas and artist in the erotic photograpy fild, her on going dialog with porn, art and the femal body contininues in this book. it's very hard to explain a photo, but hers are cold, stylish inoveting and proffessional enough to be both highly artistic and very sexualy arousing as well.

the book itself showes a large number of very well printed black and white photos, with a beautiful cover, the images runs from very explicit nudes to insinuated sexual mathaphors, it's great both as a sex book and as an art book.

5 out of 5 stars This book changed how I think about erotica!.......2003-01-10

My best friend gave me a copy of this book, and I thought, "Hmmm." I've never before found visual erotica that I truly enjoyed. As a kinky feminist, most of the naughty images I've been exposed to that turn me on sexually have also turned me off politically. Not true of this work! There are few artists in this world who aren't afraid to step outside the boundaries of the expected, and Kloster is one of them. It was lovely to encounter images of women of different shapes, sizes, and ethnicities in porn. It was even better to see work that doesn't use the same five shots over and over again. You know what I'm talking about, right? Open a man's porn magazine. We have the blond, large-chested, woman with a vapid smile on her face wearing a sexy outfit, then topless, then nude, then masturbating, then a close-up of the genitals. Boring! Kloster isn't afraid to be different, and it shows.
Always before with porn, I felt that the male gaze was part of the picture. It was as much a part of the creation of the image as the lighting or makeup, and I didn't like it. I've often had the feeling that women portrayed in erotica were putting on shows for men, rather than just enjoying themselves. It's something in their body language. A certain degree of self-consciousness, perhaps? For whatever reason, that phenomenon was missing from this artwork. The women seemed natural, comfortable, at ease, and it deeply enhanced my enjoyment of the work. (Maybe porn made by women really is different!)
I would also recommend this book as artwork, besides just being sexy. Kloster's sense of style and photographic composition is very much in evidence, and she's definitely avant-garde, willing to toy with our expectations.
I never knew that I could enjoy visual erotica. Now that I know that work this wonderful exists, I'm on a hunt for more!

Kloster in "Forms of Desire" give us all the beauty and sensuality of Fetichism. Divided by themes, all different forms of love and sense are represented by situations where the woman is the focus. She uses black and white photos to increase our fantasy. All the forms of desire are allowed and Kloster show us a range of them bringing to the reader the choice.

                    Book Description

It looks a long ways acrost from here to the States, said Curly, as we pulled up our horses at the top of the Capitan divide. We gazed out over a vast, rolling sea of red-brown earth which stretched far beyond and below the nearer foothills, black with their growth of stunted pines. This was a favorite pausing place of all travellers between the county-seat and Heart's Desire; partly because it was a summit reached only after a long climb from either side of the divide; partly, perhaps, because it was a notable view-point in a land full of noble views. Again, it may have been a customary tarrying point because of some vague feeling shared by most travellers who crossed this trail,-the same feeling which made Curly, hardened citizen as he was of the land west of the Pecos, turn a speculative eye eastward across the plains. We could not see even so far as the Pecos, though it seemed from our lofty situation that we looked quite to the ultimate, searching the utter ends of all the earth.

                          Book Description

In this book eminent international banking expert Alexandre Lamfalussy grapples with issues that surround the trend toward financial globalization and its potential impact on financial fragility. He analyzes four recent crisis experiences in emerging markets-in Russia, Latin America, Mexico, and East Asia-and offers a series of carefully considered, pragmatic policy recommendations. "Drawing on intimate personal experience and a deep well of common sense, Lamfalussy provides a compact but thorough account of debt and currency crises in the 1980s and 1990s. His proposals for crisis prevention and management are bold without being unrealistic. The Henry L. Stimson Lectures

                          4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2001-03-15

This slender, surprisingly thorough volume provides an insider's view of four region's storm-tossed financial crises (Latin America, '82, Mexico '94, Asia, '98 and Russia '98). Author Alexandre Lamfalussy, a key figure at the Bank for International Settlements during some of these crises, discusses the history of these events and the problems confronting crisis managers at the time. He lays out the critical background facts of each crisis and draws clear commonalties and contrasts among them. He also offers thoughtful, reasonable prescriptions for avoiding, minimizing and managing future crises. Then, he points out some little-discussed aspects of globalization in the developed world, which contributed to the crises. Though Lamfalussy's style is dense and somewhat academic, his content is worth the work. We at getAbstract recommend this book as valuable reading (and a financial lifejacket) for anyone doing business or investing in an emerging market, for corporate executives working abroad and for public policy makers worldwide.
