Book Description
May 16-18, 1996 · Nara, Japan
Despite all the successes in computer engineering, adaptive computation, bottom-up AI, and robotics, Artificial Life must not become simply a one-way bridge, borrowing biological principles to enhance our engineering efforts in the construction of life-as-it-could-be. We must ensure that we give back to biology in kind, by developing tools and methods that will be of real value in the effort to understand life-as-it-is.
Artificial Life V marks a decade since Christopher Langton organized the first workshop on artificial life -- a decade characterized by the exploration of new possibilities and techniques as researchers have sought to understand, through synthetic experiments, the organizing principles underlying the dynamics (usually the nonlinear dynamics) of living systems. In addition to presenting the latest work in the field, Artificial Life V includes a retrospective and prospective look at both artificial and natural life with the aim of refining the methods and approaches discovered so far into viable, practical tools for the pursuit of science and engineering goals.

Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2005-03-09
I have been using the two books by I.A. Ross in the library, and hopefully will buy my own copies soon. The organization of information is excellent. There is a similarly titled book by van Wyk and Michael Wink, which I bought sometime ago before I discovered the books by Ross. The book by Wyk and Wink, with its misleading title,is quite inferior to the books by Ivan Ross. My main grouse with the Wyk and Wink book was its over-representation of European plants, considering the relative small size of Europe and the small number of people there who rely on herbal medicines, compared to the hundreds of millions of people who depend on medicinal plants in Africa, Asia and South America. In any case, most of the "medicinal plants of the world" are in those continents. The second reviewer should be quite pleased with th book by Wyk and Wink, with its near-equation of "world" with Europe-North America. One distinguishing feature of these excellent books by Ross is its information on the traditional medicinal preparations of these plants. This is information you rarely come across in the so-called Encyclopedias of Herbs published to profit from what the publishers obviously treat as a fad. The choice of plants by Ivan Ross is quite consistent because they are mostly plants used by millions for whom herbal therapy is not just 'alternative therapy'. The scientific information collected in these books make these books invaluable reference books for a wide range of professionals
A very interesting book for the scientist or layperson........1999-08-22
As a layperson interested in the value of medicinal plants, I found this book very interesting. Even though it is primarily a book geared toward the scientific community, I found the traditional uses and pharmacological activities interesting enough to cause me to research these plants further. I like the fact that many of the plants discussed are common food plants and I was not aware of the medicinal values of them. I would recommend that anyone, either scientist or layperson, interested in furthering their knowledge in this area purchase this book. I would think that any scientist interested in this field would certainly want this book as an addition to their reference library.
Very disappointing.......1999-04-15
As someone working actively in the field of phytotherapies, I was extremely disappointed when this bbok landed on my desk by our research library - a waste of budget to say the least. The depth of each plant reviewed is on the whole well done, however, Europe as a land mass let alone a group of exciting people, does not appear to exist for this FDA author. The introductory preface clearly identifies that the author is not in tune with real global herbal medicine. Only 27 plants are reviewed, and the choice is bizzare and incoherent. Don't bother with it - there are far better books available!

Always a Worthwhile Author.......2003-11-21
A volume that may be of interest for the libraries provided to practicing medichems, especially if interests extend to SAR/QSAR. Can't beat this author for expertise. Note that the 5 stars is given because some such is required, and here ignores issue of datedness and relative cost, focusing instead on quality of author/editor.

Customer Reviews:
Grids and Solutions.......2000-04-27
The title is a bit misleading. It is a book about solutions(finite-element method) and adaptations. You can learn how to generate and modify(adaptation) the computational grid (mainly triangular)for solutions by finite-element method. It is a bit too mathematical, but not too much for engineers to read. Many algorithms are described such as Delaunay triangulation, and also data structures for adaptation. A useful book to those who wants to learn about solution adaptation procedure.
Book Description
From the mean streets of the barrio to the house on Mango Street, from the Mambo Kings to the Garcia Girls, the authors who contribute to this volume transport us across geographies and through cultures in an attempt to articulate the joys, struggles, defeats, and triumphs of the Latino experience in the United States. Growing Up Latino offers, for the first time, a comprehensive collection of classic and recent Latino writing in English, converging in sometimes shocking, often funny, and always stirring memoirs and stories. Religion, sex, love, language, and family are some of the topics explored in this compelling anthology of fiction and nonfiction. With its laughter and tears, its beauty and power, it is a thoroughly enjoyable book and an unforgettable contribution to the Latino tradition of letters. This diverse collection shatters the myth of a singular U.S.- Latino experience, proving the existence of a rich tradition whose writers, active for more than forty years, are only now being recognized by a rapidly growing audience.
Customer Reviews:
Not bad. It is just great to killing time........2007-09-05
I loved this book. It was fun and good story. Whenever you don't have enough book to read then try this book it is just great to killing time.
"don't just stand there, do something...".......2007-01-27
I really don't know what to make of *Growing Up Latino*. I mean, I did enjoy the book. I laughed, nodded and groaned with memories of my Hispanic background as I read the stories. However, I was surprised at excerpted stories in this book by other well known Hispanic authors.
Oscar "Zeta" Acosta's "The Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo" and Jose Antonio Villarreal's "Pocho" are a couple of examples where an excerpt of their stories are in this book. So, it made me wonder just how many other works in this book were also excerpts.
To me, there were lots of other wonderful stories by well known authors, such as Sandra Cisneros, Richard Rodriguez, Gloria Anzaldua, Rudolfo A. Anaya and many more. Each of them were unique with the topics they've chosen as well as their writing styles.
There were many topics covered in the stories. However, just about almost everyone had a similar experience. Topics covered death, education, religion, Spanish, English, gringos, food, social norms and many more. Experiences were similar when it came to social norms, teachers, Catholic schools, pronunciation of names and the like. I could relate to some of them, which made some stories more cherished than others. There were a couple of stories that I just could not "get it".
Nonetheless, it was a good read. I just wished that there were no excerpted stories. Excerpted stories feel abrupted and it's mainly because you're only read a sample. Regardless, I will recommend my friends to read this book, along with an explanation.
Views of Latinos.......2003-11-19
I thought that Growing Up Latino really showed different views of Latino life. They do not come in all the same way. I was glad that to see some of my favorite authors were in this book. I also found new authors that I never knew I was interested in until I read this book. The book showed us through the victories and struggles that follow with the Latino culture. I really enjoyed this book and even recommended it to my friends.
Excellent.......1999-08-25
This is a marvelous anthology. I've given it to friends and want students to read. It is cleverly thought out and has a wonderful preface by Stavans and a solid introduction. The contributors are all first-rate.
well organized anthology that keeps the reader interested........1998-09-16
This book is an anthology of works of various hispanic writers and their experiences in the united states. It provides each reader with a sence of being because in a strange way you are able to relate to each story. Its a great book!

Carmen Deedy.......2007-02-09
Carmen Deedy is a wonderful storyteller and author! My daughter and I have worn out the tape version listening over and over again! The stories are heartfelt, funny and so real- you will feel as though they are told just for you!
Her stories (books & CD) are so well written and told, young and old will laugh out loud - although it may be for two different reasons! She is a favorite at our house (and in our car!)You won't be dissapointed!
I have had the amazing opportunity to see Ms. Deedy present her stories to an elementary school and everyone (kids and grownups) loved every minute of her storytelling! I was able to visit with her for a short while and she is such a nice, down to earth person and it was truely a joy and honor to have this opportunity.
Funny Funny Family.......2007-01-16
Carmen Deedy tells hilarious stories of her family, her home, and growing up in Decatur, Ga. Definately worth listening to over and over!
The magic and grace of Carmen Agra Deedy.......2006-07-16
I wish I could introduce everyone to Carmen Agra Deedy. My daughter and granddaughters have talked about her for years. On my vacation, it was my great pleasure to attend a story telling session at a Borders in Georgia. What a wonderful story teller Ms Deedy is. I bought several of her books for children while at the store, charming stories, beautifully illustrated. When we returned to my daughter's home, my daughter handed me an audio tape of Ms. Deedy narrating her stories of Growing up Cuban in Decatur, Georgia. I listened, I smiled and I had a great urge to have everyone I know enjoy the same happy experience. With no trouble at all, I was able to sit at my daughter's computer, ask Amazon.com to send me three copies of the tapes. They arrived at my home before I did, and have given some happy, peaceful moments to my dear ones here in Rhode Island. I highly recommend her books and her tapes.
I loved it........2004-11-26
The only thing better is seeing her live, and my only complaint is that it wasn't longer. She's wonderful to listen to.
Best Story Ever!!.......2004-08-09
I love this tape! Have listened to it over and over again. I must say that this lady is the best story teller I have every heard! Every time I hear the part about when her Cuban Mother (who, of COURSE, is driving her crazy) says "When I'm gone you're gonna missss meeee", it makes me cry. What love, compassion and emotion she puts in her story telling. Excellent! I always laugh at the "little Carmen" who insists her name is "Carmen!...not Caaarrrrmeeeen (long drawled out southern style). A MUST have!!

Wachale! (Spanglish for “watch out!”) includes folk tales, stories, and poems in both English and Spanish, and brief autobiographical essays by both well-established and emerging writers representing all shades of Latinos, such as Chicanos in the Southwest, Puerto Ricans in New York, and Cubans in Florida, as well as Dominicans, Guatemalans, and other subgroups. Geared toward ten- to thirteen-year-olds, this is a window to Latino experiences north of the Rio Grande.
Product Description
What does it mean to be a Latino teen? Seven young people write about their experiences with family, ethnic pride, and cultural conflict.
Book Description
Meet Loco, a dog with a passion for firecrackers. And Pedro, an altar boy forced to learn a hard lesson from two of the toughest, oldest men ever to serve the Lord. Jordan and Todd are two boys from California who don't know what they're in for when they push their Texas cousins a little too far. Loosely based on the author's own childhood in south Texas, this story collection is a moving whirlwind of humor and insight-brash, tender, and full of the unexpected.
Customer Reviews:
Crazy Loco.......2007-10-02
The book Crazy Loco by David Rice is short stories about children growing up near the border of Mexico and the United States as Mexican Americans. Most of the stories are funny, but a few of them are serious and sad. I felt the serious stories, such as Her Other Son and She Flies, were much stronger than some of the funny stories, such as The California Cousins and Proud to be an American. I liked the stronger stories more because I could really feel for some of the characters and what they were going through. I also felt they were better because they had more description. My favorite story of all of them was Her Other Son. This story was about a young boy's close connection to his family's maid. I enjoyed this story the most because the reader can really understand what the character is going through and it was very descriptive and touching.
When reading this book, it reminded me of the book Crossing the Wire because in a lot of the stories the characters had to cross the border between the United States and Mexico. They also spoke a little bit of Spanish in Crazy Loco (that the readers can understand) as they also did in the book Crossing the Wire. In each story in this book, the author, David Rice, always had great description. Also at the end of every story he kind of leaves you at a cliffhanger. You are left wondering questions about what will happen next in the characters life, or why did the character do that? I like how the author did this because it really gets you to think deeper about the story. It also helps you get a better understanding of the story when you think so much about it. Even though some stories weren't as strong as the others, I still think Crazy Loco was a very good book.
Papa Lalo.......2003-04-17
I just recently finished reading both of Rice's books: Give The Pig A Chance, and Crazy Loco.
I have comments on several of his short stories, but overall, I'd like to say that his writing is very inspiring to me - I didn't expect for stories this short to be full with such great symbolism.
In his short story, Papa Lalo, Henry was given a compass from his grandfather, as a gift.
A compass always faces North. The Earth has it's own magnetic polarity that magnifies the pull of a compass to face due North. The compass could have symbolized the unbearable "magnetic pull": that Harry had with his grandfather. Even though Harry didn't realize he shared any common ground, or any connection with his grandfather - He always had that "magnetic pull" a "bond" that we sometimes are unfamiliar with until we try to face another direction in life - or until life points us in a new direction.
This was a very well written, carefully thought out story.
Move over Gary Soto/Haste un lado Gary Soto.......2001-07-02
David Rice's second book Crazy Loco is a collection of short stories that kicks off the new wave of young adult Chicano literature. As an English teacher I've sought quality Chicano literature for my kids and aside from Gary Soto, there isn't much out there. I'm glad to see that's changing. Rice's stories are hilarious and even though they're set in South Texas with mostly Chicano characters, they will appeal to all kids. I shared stories from his previous book, Give the Pig a Chance, with my students and they loved them. Since his style has improved and these stories are funnier, I know my students will love Crazy Loco even more. My favorites of the bunch were "Crazy Loco" and "Proud to be an American." They are about two things most kids are experts about: dogs and fireworks. Other stories are heartfelt. "Papa Lalo" will strike a chord with children who have lived through divorce or have lost their grandparents. "Valentine" is about the pain and power of first love. David Rice writes the Rio Grande Valley of Texas like few other authors can. He is a great new voice in Chicano fiction and one to watch in the future.
Crazy Loco, a Crazy Collection.......2001-06-27
I've heard David Rice read a few of the stories in this collection back in South Texas at different venues and was amazed at how much his writing had matured since his first book (Give the Pig a Chance--another fine book in its own right). A side note to anyone with an opportunity to experience Rice's presentations--take the chance, go out of your way if you have to, but do listen to him. Back to the book: I was so looking forward to Crazy Loco, and when I got my copy, I got right to it. Dropped Moby Dick, and slowed down on To the Lighthouse to finish Crazy Loco. The stories, most of which are told in the first person, the narrators varying from story to story, are humorous and fun to read. But I feel the strongest pieces are the ones in which Rice cuts out the humor, and gets down to some serious business, like in "Last Mass" and "Her Other Son." These stories are emotional without being sentimental. These stories bring to mind others of his works, namely "Tina La Tinaca" from his first collection, and they show exactly why Rice is being published today.
