In this long-awaited work, Dalibor Vesely proposes an alternative to the narrow vision of contemporary architecture as a discipline that can be treated as an instrument or commodity. In doing so, he offers nothing less than an account of the ontological and cultural foundations of modern architecture and, consequently, of the nature and cultural role of architecture through history. Vesely's argument, structured as a critical dialogue, discovers the first plausible anticipation of modernity in the formation of Renaissance perspective. Understanding this notion of perspective against the background of the medieval philosophy of light, he argues, leads to an understanding of architectural space as formed by typical human situations and by light before it is structured geometrically. The central part of the book addresses the question of divided representation--the tension between the instrumental and the communicative roles of architecture--in the period of the baroque, when architectural thinking was seriously challenged by the emergence of modern science.
Vesely argues that to resolve the dilemma of modernity-- reconciling the inventions and achievements of modern technology with the human condition and the natural world--we can turn to architecture and its latent capacity to reconcile different levels of reality, its ability to relate abstract ideas and conceptual structures to the concrete situations of everyday life. Vesely sees the restoration of this communicative role of architecture as the key to the restoration of architecture as the topological and corporeal foundation of culture; what the book is to our literacy, he argues, architecture is to culture as a whole. He concludes by proposing a new poetics of architecture that will serve as a framework for the restoration of the humanistic role of architecture in the age of technology.

I agree with darkeyes, this book is terrible!
The author does assume that we will understand and have prior knowledge of formulas that aren't even listed in the book!
You know what? I am a 24 year old college student. I haven't had Algebra in 4 years! And even if I had taken it last semester, it is unfair to assume that students will recall which formulas go with each problem. Not only does the book not provide them, but the teacher's manual doesnt even proovide them, and I know because I have seen his book. Second, the problem sets in the back of the book are not EXPLAINED anywhere! THIS TEXT IS HONESTLY AWFUL!

This book was a great addition to my on-line microeconomics course. They use really current business information and real-life examples to make is easier to understand. The problems are challenging. You should have a basic understanding of charts and graphs before economics though.
Not the best book for at home reader.. .......2006-07-15
This was a required book for my Microeconomics class. Unfortunately it's an online class. Therefore, I had to read the book at home. The economics graphs and equations weren't explained well on this book. The author expected us to know how stuff works before reading his graphs (and there isn't much explanation on the book about it). My instructor gives us exams based on the equations and graphs which made it even harder. I wouldn't recommend this book for at home reader or online students.

This book helped me to get an A in Microeconomics since my professor didn't have a formal textbook just a Power Point presentation that I couldn't refer to when I needed it. The book is not only great but they have a website to take quizzes or review the material. I recommend it!

Excellent feature of this book is the aplication part that shows real impacts or examples of theory in reality. I have bought this book to accompany my Economics by Collander and it was good choice. If you want to test your knowledge - buy yet Economic Concepts (ISBN 0070455910). You will do the best for your understanding.
