    Book Description

In recent years, museums have achieved the status of architectural monuments in their own right, especially in America, where the museum itself is often as much a focal point as the art it displays. With exciting new buildings currently under way in New York, Denver, Minneapolis, Atlanta, and Boston, now is the perfect time for this survey of 39 museums throughout the United States, by more than 50 of the world's greatest architects, from Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Kahn to Santiago Calatrava, Frank Gehry, and Richard Meier.

This landmark publication looks at American art museums designed since the Museum of Modern Art was completed in New York in 1938, including the Getty Center, the Kimbell Art Museum, the High Museum of Art, Houston's Museum of Fine Arts, Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art, the Phoenix Art Museum, and the Milwaukee Art Museum. Each building is described in short texts by the architect and museum director and documented in beautiful photographs by renowned photographer Paul Rocheleau. As this dazzling book shows, the art museum has become one area where architects are allowed, even encouraged, to push the boundaries of design with radical new forms and cutting-edge materials. AUTHOR BIO: Scott Tilden is the editor and conceiver of architecture books, including American Synagogues: A Century of Architecture and Jewish Life and Daniel H. Burnham: Visionary Architect and City Planner. Paul Rocheleau has published many books of photographs, including volumes on Frank Lloyd Wright, H. H. Richardson, and Frederick Law Olmsted. Wim de Wit is special collections director of the Getty Research Institute and the author of numerous books and articles on architecture.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent choice for beginner and intermediate artist!.......1998-06-18

Diana Constance, deals with drawing the human figure in a direct and concise way. I had use of this book while taking a course in college. It showed methods of drawing, with examples and was not another anthology of famous masterworks. I needed information on techniques and found this book to be a valuable resource.

Please, have the publisher place this book back in print!

                          Book Description

Designed as an introduction to general economics for non-majors, Sharp/Register/Grimes’ text presents economic concepts as useful tools to analyze contemporary social issues. The book may also be used to supplement principles courses. The Economics of Social Issues has garnered a loyal user following for its timely and impartial handling of current social issues which dominate newspapers and television news. While the issues are contemporary and the supporting information updated, the authors remain objective.

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction to applied economics.......2006-12-04

This is an introductory policy economics book. The principal weakness of this book is that it does not give a solid explanation of economic theory, and it will probably be a bit basic for anyone who has taken even separate introductory courses in microeconomic and macroeconomic theory. The book appears to be designed to stand alone as introductory economics textbook for non-economics majors. What little (very little) economic theory is needed to understand this book is explained within, but it is not enough to meet even the needs of introductory class economics class for business or economics majors. Political science majors might find this book useful for giving them an introduction to the economic issues at hand in education, unemployment, free trade, government spending, social security, and other areas (such as the business of big sports). Importantly, the authors seem to come out with new editions often, so they are hopefully keeping up to date on the issues.

This book will give someone as solid a foundation as can be achieved wihtout really learning economic theory, which makes me think that it would be best for people studying a political or policy-related field. It could perhaps be used in a serious economics class, provided sources of more in depth information are also used.

5 out of 5 stars outstanding introduction to economics.......1999-03-18

this is an outstanding book for those who want to know more, but not too much more, about economic thinking. modern examples and applications make the book easy to read, for a university text.

                            Book Description

This book offers a theoretical and unified explanation of how prices are determined in practice. Pricing, as observed in real life, turns out to be almost discriminatory. Four broad areas are covered: the spatial pricing of bulky products (Part I); the intertemporal pricing of storable goods, exhaustible resources, new durables, and nonstorable goods and services (Part II); two-part tariffs, commodity bundling, tie-ins, and nonlinear prices in general (Part III); and pricing of goods of different quality (Part IV). Each essay contains an introductory chapter describing the business practices that are to be rationalized and evaluated. This is the first unified treatment of a recent and growing body of literature in the ‘new industrial organization’ field. It fills the gap between textbook microeconomics and real-life antitrust cases. The treatment is as nontechnical and down to earth as possible to permit a wide audience for this comprehensive discussion of industrial pricing.

                              Book Description

Regulation Misled by Misread Theory changes how we think about economics. Standard economics has long held that firms can price discriminate only when they have monopoly power. Antitrust authorities and other regulators are thus tempted to use the existence of price discrimination as one indicator that a firm should possibly be subject to government investigation. In this monograph Professor Baumol shows that price discrimination not only exists in competitive markets but sometimes is a crucial feature of them. Baumol concludes by urging regulators to tread carefully when applying theory to policy.

From the supplier: The effect on output by third degree price discrimination was analyzed through the use of calculus. The Lerner index, the adjusted concavity and the demand elasticity were the elements identified in determining the effect. A general criterion based on Robinson's concavity concept was developed to identify the output effect of discrimination. Analysis shows that the concavity and convexity of demand curves could have different implications on the output effect of price discrimination.

                                    Description:
Multiple objects may be sold by posting a schedule consisting of one price for each possible bundle and permitting the buyer to select the price-bundle pair of his choice. We identify conditions that must be satisfied by any price schedule that maximizes revenue within the class of all such schedules. We then provide conditions under which a price schedule maximizes expected revenue within the class of all incentive compatible and individually rational mechanisms in the n-object case. We use these results to characterize environments, mainly distributions of valuations, where bundling is the optimal mechanism in the two and three good cases.
