Squares, circles, columns, pyramids, grids, and the like are the vital constants of any kind of visual representation, appearing not only across eras and cultures but across such media as "fine" art and its more "applied" cousin, architecture. Californian Barry Berkus, a big-time architect as well as a major collector of modern art, is fascinated by how such elemental shapes and forms reflect each other in art and architecture, and in this beguilingly curated volume, a sort of personal scrapbook of the highest order, he explores just that. How? Largely by pairing sumptuous full-color photographs of his own architectural projects--the majority of which are lavish, fanciful, geometrically daring residences in the American Southwest--with some of the great pieces of modern and contemporary art, plus some shots of such lovely antiquities as Italian hillside villages and the whitewashed alleys of Mykonos. It's all in the interest of showing us how said elemental forms echo across time, regions, and craft; to those ends, we have the "female" curves of a charmingly sunny-hued OB-GYN office Berkus designed in Santa Barbara across from the abstracted curves of the woman in Picasso's 1932 Reading, or the archways of a garden court arcade he designed in 1989 for Villa Lucia, a private residence in Montecito, flush up against archways from the Roman ruins, or the one over the doorway in the gorgeously crumbling front façade of an old home in Torgiano, Italy.
Berkus's annotations are unremarkable--many of the ideas are general and overfamiliar, and it often reads somewhat like Rem Koolhaas without the wacked-out, idiot-savant lyricism. But no matter, as the real treasures of this book are the photos of Berkus's architecture itself. It's not without its common themes across projects--namely, a fondness for massing a toybox's worth of warmly colored basic shapes into improbably elegant, sprawling clusters--but it nonetheless dazzles in its diversity, and Berkus seems as comfortable and innovative designing in full-bore geometric-postmodern as he does in neo-Italianate villa or pueblo modular. Pair his own satisfying designs with his cosmopolitan appreciation of everyone and everything from Corbu, Calder, and the Case Study Homes to Zen temples, the agorae of ancient Greece, and the coolly ironic work of contemporary artists like Ed Ruscha and Ann Hamilton, and you have a palette that's at the very least a pleasant spree. At its best, though, it's a literate and often poignant study of those elements of the visual world we just can't stop coming back to. --Timothy Murphy

This collection of works offers a unique view into the inspiration that fueled the creative energy of one of the most influential architects of this century. The title is true to its name. The usage of parallel imagery is found throughout the book and catalyzes the reader to look closer at the world around them recognizing and combining complementary forms to create magnificent modern structures. A must read for architects, aspiring and practiced, who are looking to develop or uncover new perspectives in there work.

I particularly appreciated Berkus' down-to-earth approach to writing - no technical jargon or "experts" language here. Berkus' concepts are far-reaching and visionary - this is seen strongly in the final section of the book "Building for the Future."

One of the most original and memorable photographers of the twentieth century, Brassaï was also a journalist, sculptor, and writer. He took great pride in his writing, and he loved literature and language-French most of all. When he arrived in Paris in 1924, Brassaï began teaching himself French by reading Proust. Captured by the sensuality and visual strategies of Proust's writing, Brassaï soon became convinced that he had discovered a kindred spirit. Brassaï wrote: "In his battle against Time, that enemy of our precarious existence, ever on the offensive though never openly so, it was in photography, also born of an age-old longing to halt the moment, to wrest it from the flux of duration in order to 'fix' it forever in a semblance of eternity, that Proust found his best ally." He quoted Proust in his own writing, and from the annotated books in his library, we know that he spent a lifetime studying and dissecting Proust's prose, often line by line.
Drawing on his own experience as a photographer and author, Brassaï discovers a neglected aspect of Proust's interests, offering us a fascinating study of the role of photography both in Proust's oeuvre and in early-twentieth-century culture. Brassai's best book.......2001-10-19
This short book was written by the great European photographer Brassai not long before his death in 1982. It has only now found its way into print in English, and what a gem it is. Beautifully translated by Richard Howard and featuring a gorgeous design, this is one of the best and most accessible books I've ever read about Proust. One can tell that Brassai had a great love for Proust's work--and he richly explores the writer's life in France in the early 20th century and his fascination with the new art of photography...and how the medium impacted Proust's work. Really, this is a special book and should appeal to anyone interested in photography, Proust, French culture in the first half of the twentieth century.

If, like me, you have painful misgivings about centers of power dominating our history, namely, religion, science and humanism, this is a book you must read. Clark teases a quite amazing concerted illuminative action from the work of such seemingly exclusive figures as Heidegger, Proust, Balanchine, Antonioni and Hawking.And in pressing their insights into concrete historical action, he introduces undreamed of realms of problematicness and joy.

The exams had many similar questions that were provided in this study guide. This guide also summarized the important things from each chapter, but the text book was still needed to get an A.

I thought that the delivery time could have been a little sooner because it took a week and i paid for expedited shipping. I needed it for school but I got along without it. The book was in great condition and it was exactly what I needed. The price was great. For this book and the other book that it came with, the school was charging $175.00 so i got a great deal. i am definitely buying my books from amazon again.

Errors abound.......2007-05-21
The study guide was kind of useful, but it often asked pointless questions about details with which we were completely unconcerned in my Intro Microeconomics class. Also, it often gave the wrong answers for multiple choice questions, resulting in such inaccurate assertions as "The statement that firms in competitive markets are price takers means that average cost equals marginal cost at the minimum of average cost." It contradicted the book as well, defining the long run average cost curve as the straight line running along the bottom of the short-run curves when in actuality such a curve is the minimum average cost curve, and it bizarrely defined the real product wage as the marginal product divided by the product price. This last error wasn't exactly a typo, because it appeared twice. I can only imagine how many microeconomics students this study guide has misled and confused.

I found this book to be the best study guide I have ever used. If you need the textbook for a class you should purchase this study guide. It includes short 1-2 page chapter summaries of every chapter which really help cut down the study time. It also includes chapter quizes and pre-tests with answers so you will certainly be prepared for any test. If used properly you don't need the actual textbook! I got an A in Micro and I credit it entirely to this study guide.

the book was listed as being new when it was not. Had quite a bit of the answers in the guide and it was the earlier edition, which was not the intended book I wanted to purchase. Very disappointed with my purchase.

Econ Profs, Start Here First.......2001-12-01
This is one of 2 books I kept from my four years in college. It is also the book that helped me choose Economics as one of my minors. It's that good.
Gottheil's models (actually, he really only uses one model--a fishery) are almost absurdly easy to follow. Along the way he takes concepts a student would find new and difficult, and makes them into concepts a student can follow, and in my case, enjoy. I whole heartedly reccomend this title.
Principles of Microeconomics by Gottheil = SIMPLICITY.......2001-05-19
I have now had two course in economics - Principles of Micro. and Macro., both classes required the use of the priciples books by Fred Gottheil. My professor was a student of Mr. Gottheil and described his classes as clarifying. She said that he made economics easy to understand. This book by Gottheil, as his class, is also easy to comprehend. The topics are confusing to a newcomer of economics but the style and clarification used makes the principles quite simple.

You're absolutely correct!! I was a student of Prof. Gottheil the first year he released this book. The teachings of the book make Micro-Economics both easy to understand and enjoyable. I've recommended this book to both undergrads and MBA students alike, and have not received a single complaints (but have received much praise).
