Book Description

Newly built hotels are being admired throughout the world by travelers and architects, and this strikingly illustrated survey features the best new designs.

In the past several years, hoteliers have responded ever more boldly to their guests' demands for both luxury and aesthetic sophistication. The result has been the emergence of new trends in hotel design, which at one extreme increasingly blur the border between lodging, lifestyle, and living theatre, and at the other seek to reinvent the more discreet manners and style of the grand hotels of the late nineteenth century. This visually exciting volume by noted design writer Graham Vickers provides a timely overview of these trends, profiling no fewer than thirty-seven of the world's most noteworthy new hotels, from the lavishly appointed Ritz-Carlton Miami to a Quebec hotel constructed entirely of snow and ice.

Vickers skillfully clarifies the distinctions between the various strands of contemporary hotel design by dividing the book into categorical chapters: "Traditional Interpretations" surveys luxury hotels a la the Four Seasons; "Mainstream Experiments" highlights fresh takes on the conventional business or tourist hotel concept; "Original Ideas" presents hotels with a special theme or purpose; "Designer Hotels" focuses on the unique creations of celebrated interior designers; and "Architectural Significance" covers hotels based in exceptional buildings. The commentaries on individual hotels within these chapters are illustrated by a total of 210 color photographs, as well as the designers' own plans and elevations. Additional features—a concise introduction to the cultural context of hotel design, a complete list of featured architects and designers, and a full index—make this book an appealing and useful guide for both the hospitality professionals who operate hotels and the travelers who stay in them.

5 out of 5 stars Not your Standard Motel 6 Designs.......2005-08-23

The thirty seven hotels featured in this book have been selected to illustrate the exciting trend that has come about in recent years to build hotels that stretch beyond the utilitarian hotels of old to reach new heights of style. Most of these new hotels have been designed for a close, harmonious fit to their surroundings. This is particularly striking in some of the hotels built in mountain or desert locations.

Other hotels built in cities for instance, do not have unduely striking exteriors but make up for it by the attention paid to the design of the interior areas both public and in the individual rooms.

The selected hotels are scattered widely around the world, showing that such design is not restricted to one locale or even to one continent.

Seven of the hotels might be considered to be the design experiments, where the basic structure or use of the building stretches design to the limits. These are not your basic Motel 6 designs.

4 out of 5 stars Honeymoon Helper.......2001-03-27

My husband and I used Karen Brown's "Italy: Inn and Initeraries 2000" to plan our honeymooon in Italy: Venice, Florence, Chianti, Capri, Rome and Positano and I'm so glad that we did. The descriptions were accurate and she has very good taste in hotels. There were no surprises, we got exactly what we anticipated and in some cities more. In Rome, the Hotel Barocco staff was particularly nice and upgraded us to a room with a balcony at no extra charge. At Le Sinenuse in Positano, the staff was also very nice and the hotel is unforgettable.

I'd recommend this and the series to anyone. I'm using the Italy book again for this summer's vacation.

3 out of 5 stars This is useful for listings and phone numbers........1999-08-09

On our recent journey to Tuscany and Umbria, we resorted to the book for two places to stay. One was a castle, a marvelous place, but without signage. Either the actual location, as described in the book, was right and the 1,200-year-old castle had been moved in the night, or, more likely, the book was badly off, by miles. The second described, in gushing terms, a family-run former farmhouse near Rada, where we and another couple from Philadelphia independently reached the same conclusion -- that they were indifferent, at best, and wished we wouldn't bother them. Our hosts kept the downstairs hideaway, a library and sitting room, off limits to all guests, even though it was delightful (as written in the book) and ready to use. We wonder if the hosts treated the reviewer wonderfully, but our experience had little resemblance to that -- nor that did of the two other Americans we'd never met before, and with whom we compared notes afterwards.

5 out of 5 stars The only resource I really needed!.......1999-07-26

Fantastic! I think Karen saved me hundreds of hours of research time and hair pulling. All the contact information, stunning write-ups, all true to their word just made everything so easy from booking the room to getting our documents in order. The itineraries made our trip unique and special. I can't wait to start on next years trip with Karen Brown's Guide to Switzerland!

5 out of 5 stars Would not travel without it!.......1999-04-10

This book made my trip to Italy as romantic as I had hoped it would be. - Of course being with the man of my dreams helped. We stayed at two different locations recommended and they were just as charming as described. I do think that the service was even better than we expected but it was "off-season". I will look for a Karen Brown book for my next trip. Hurry Karen and make a trip to Egypt.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding! The Italian inns were charming and delightful!.......1999-03-12

I traveled to Ravello, Florence, Rome, Venice, and Cinque Terra and stayed in a 'Karen Brown inn' at every leg of the trip. The descriptions were perfect. Any chance of writing a similar book for the Greek Isles?

    Book Description

For the first time, Hotel Revolution draws together the new concepts of luxury that are central to 21 st-century life, highlighting radical, exciting and exquisite designs that leave the now diluted concept of the boutique hotel in their wake. Hotel design has reached a new peak of innovation in recent years, providing a prism for our understanding of culture, style and desire. Using beautiful photographs, Howard Watson reassesses the diversity of hotel design in the wake of the rise of the boutique hotel, exploring new projects from many of the world’s greatest designers and architects.

The cultural importance of hotel design has never been greater, becoming the mirror to our aspirations and the fulcrum for innovation in architecture and design. With a blossoming interest in eco-resorts, spas and retreats, we now see hotels as both the leaders of style and as the antidote to the negative aspects of modern life.

Karim Rashid, Marcel Wanders, Antonio Citterio, Philippe Starck, Matteo Thun, Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid, David Chipperfield, GRAFT and many other inspirational designers have taken on the challenge. They have created gorgeous hotels that shock and delight. From converted boulangeries and convents to micro hotels to country retreats and eastern spas, the designers have delivered…with style.

5 out of 5 stars Do not consider going to NZ as a tourist without this book.......2001-10-03

NZ is not littered with large hotels; most tourist accommodation is bed and breadfast and very good at that. This book documents most of the best in the country, with detailed comments, prices and several pictures of each place so that you have a clear idea of what it will be like.

5 out of 5 stars The best kept secrets of New Zealand Accommodation.......2000-09-21

I was in one of the boutique hotels that is featured in this book one night while out of my home town on business. (Dorothy's Boutique Hotel in Christchurch - a must stay place! ) In each of the rooms of this hotel was this fanastic guide to NZ accommodation.

Instead of being one of those typical hotel nights, where you are bored silly, I was fascinated to flick through the pages and see somem of the regions of our great country that have adopted the concept of becoming unique in themselves.

I have since visited many of the Hotels and Guest rooms featured, and in every case it has felt like staying with friends, not that plastic feel that alot of hotels have.

I would seriously recommend this book for all travellers that want to see the "real" New Zealand. Not that NZ is fake, but there are so much more to our country than the central cities.

I have this book on my coffee table at home, representing some of the best NZ places to visit and stay.

The many and varied effects of faux finishing lend lively visual texture to all sorts of surfaces. If you're looking to give these ever-popular techniques a try but don't feel up to tackling entire walls, applying them to home accessories and furnishings is a smart alternative. As Rhonda Rainey shows in Faux Finishing for the First Time, most of these methods are simple to achieve on the relatively small scale of candleholders, vases, lamps, boxes, and frames, or even on the larger surfaces of tabletops, bureaus, and other paintables. Rainey introduces the basics of tools, supplies, and surface preparation, then--following the question-and-answer format of the First Time book series--explains 16 basic and 8 more advanced techniques, including combing, crackling, sponging, stippling, vinegar painting, gilding, tortoiseshell, wood graining, and distressing. Many of the projects are a bit on the dull side, but the decent directions and generally easy methods make this a reasonable choice for beginners. An attractive photo gallery of rooms by several artists demonstrates the medium's vast possibilities in the hands of the masters. --Amy Handy

              Book Description

“A popular, streamlined version of faux finishes.... Special spray paint emulates the feel of suede in a twig-wrapped vase, while a tool called a rocker enables a wood-grain-like finish to be applied faultlessly. Uses a series of well-illustrated questions and answers to introduce tools and supplies [and] basic and advanced techniques to the reader. Five American artists showcase their not-so-faux talents, giving a sophisticated breadth to this art.”—Booklist.

3 out of 5 stars Boring Faux Finishes, even for beginners.......2006-07-01

I've done a lot of painting, but not faux painting. Some of the projects were interesting and different, but many looked so obviously fake I cringed. I did give the book some stars for general instructions and the projects that seemed interesting. Unfortunately, there were only a few projects that caught my eye and I even found looking through the book was boring. The photography in the book is good and the instructions seem clear for the few projects I liked.

              The few interesting projects:
~ covering an objects with cement (like garden furniture or in the project, a gargoyle)
~ get the look of bronze using paint
              ~ applying gilding leaf

This book would be an okay edition for a beginner if you buy it used.

5 out of 5 stars Illustrated with a variety of color photos.......2001-05-28

Rhoda Rainey's Faux Finishing For The First Time (4483-8, $19.95) provides newcomers to faux with a basic survey of styles and approaches to projects using ordinary objects. Techniques are illustrated with a variety of color photos and a 'how do I' question/answer format lends to quick and easy consultation. All are excellent guides. An excellent guide.

                  Book Description

In a relatively short period of time Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) has grown into a powerful quantitative, analytical tool for measuring and evaluating performance. It has been successfully applied to a host of different entities engaged in a wide variety of activities in many contexts worldwide. In many cases evaluations of these entities have been resistant to other approaches because complex, multiple levels of (often) poorly understood relations must be considered. A few examples of these multifaceted problems are (1) maintenance activities of US Air Force bases in geographically dispersed locations, (2) police force efficiencies in the United Kingdom, (3) branch bank performances in Canada, Cyprus, and other countries and (4) the efficiency of universities in performing their education and research functions in the U.S., England, and France. In addition to localized problems, DEA applications have been extended to performance evaluations of `larger entities' such as cities, regions, and countries. These extensions have a wider scope than traditional analyses because they include `social' and `safety-net' expenditures as inputs and various `quality-of-life' dimensions as outputs.

In other applications, DEA has been used to supply new insights into business activities and into the methods that have been used to evaluate these activities. These include `benchmarking' studies of professional organizations including legal and accounting societies, as well as organizational forms--such as evaluating the relative efficiencies of the `mutual' vs. `corporate' forms of organization that are used in the U.S. insurance industry. Finally, DEA can also be used to evaluate objects as well as governmental, business and societal activities. For example, a test study found that DEA compared favorably with traditional engineering approaches for use in evaluating the relative efficiencies of jet aircraft engines. These advantages accrued to DEA because of its ability to simultaneously handle multiple outputs and inputs without having to first specify a system of weights for use in effecting these evaluations.
Data Envelopment Analysis: A Comprehensive Text with Models, Applications, References, and DEA-Solver Software is designed to provide a systematic introduction to DEA and its uses as a multifaceted tool for evaluating problems in a variety of contexts. Each chapter accompanies its developments with simple numerical examples and discussions of actual applications. Emphasis is placed on the use as well as an understanding of DEA and the topics in this book have been selected and treated accordingly. The objective is to introduce students, researchers, and practitioners in business, economics, engineering, and the sciences to Data Envelopment Analysis.
The authors have been involved in DEA's development from the beginning. William Cooper (with Abraham Charnes and Edwardo Rhodes) is a founder of DEA. Lawrence Seiford and Kaoru Tone have been actively involved as researchers and practitioners from its earliest beginnings. All have been deeply involved in uses of DEA in practical applications as well as in the development of its basic theory and methodologies. The result is a textbook grounded in authority, experience and substance.

2 out of 5 stars Mathematical techniques of extremely limited usefullness.......2006-05-13

The two stars in my rating are not so much a comment on quality (although it has all the glitter of a 1940's graduate math tome), but as a warning that it is likely to be of value to an extremely limited audience. I would strongly suggest looking through a copy to verify its usefullness to what you want to do before investing money in buying it.

It sets up the machinery and provides examples of methods to determine distance from a linearly defined boundary of paramaterized point sets. If this is what you need to do, then it will indeed be a useful book.

However wider claims of great usefullness in analyzing general performance of businesses, or any other entities characterized by incomplete information and random variation, need to be accepted cautiously. Hence my warning that it will be of very limited usefullness to the majority of analysts, and it would be well to verify that it addresses the problem one needs to solve before buying it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellence is a Function of Cooper et al........2000-08-13

What a joy it is to read a great book! If you want to learn the subject of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) get a copy of this book. Both the text and the CD help focus the reader to understand and maximize the learning experience. I am sure this book will become another classic for Dr. Cooper et al.

5 out of 5 stars great DEA models and advances.......2000-06-06

for researchers, this book is a must in that it presents a really comprehensive review of dea history and frontiers. but good applications and model comparison with stochastic or bayesian studies could be addressed more in details.
