Coffee Table Lucca.......2007-06-05
This is an attractive book, but the layout and style really do not do justice to the subject matter. The photographs are prolific, but there is a certain carelessness in composition. They don't always convey either the grandeur and character of many of the great houses, or the stunning beauty and subtlety of the landscapes of the Lucchesia. The type chosen for the text (is it arial?)is not in harmony with the historical material. There is overall an impression of haste in the editing. The historical details are also at times unsatisfactory. eg. on page 195 we see the Villa Regis. The picture is a bland and boring shot of a wonderfully romantic house. In the Lucchesia, as in many other places, the names of houses vary. This house belonged for centuries to the Orsucci family. Signor Regis owned it for some years until 1969, when he sold it to my husband David Caccia. We lived there for the next five years. The present owner is Paolo Pardini, who has lived there for over 30 years. But the true name, locally and in the old documents, is Villa Colfranco. Angela Caccia Lloyd

This book covers washing, cleaning, polishing etc your boat. There are instructions and a lot of ideas on household chemicals which can replace expensive boat-labelled products. There are a lot of product recommendations - not only generic advice. The downside of this is that a lot of the products described are not available in Europe.

Wet, Wet, Wet.......2002-06-02
I found this book at a Book Outlet store and thought "for the price, I should get it", so I did. I have to tell you that this is one of the best books to use to build up confidence and technical skills in wet into wet watercolor painting. Each chapter is fun to read and the examples (step by step) are so easy to follow that they help you become an "expert" by the end of the book. I have lots of watercolor books and have found this to be one of my favorites on wet into wet technique for the above reasons.
Wet-in-Wet Watercolor.......1999-11-25
Ms Speckman's book helped me break through to a new level of watercolor painting. She deals entirely with "wet-in-wet", breaking it down into three sections: The Saturated Approach, Painting by Sections and the Painterly Approach. Beginning with a practical and thorough discussion of paper and pigments as they apply specifically to wet-in-wet watercolor, she proceeds to original and effective step-by-step instruction. Although I have purchased and worked from many books on instructional watercolor, I found Ms. Speckmann's techniques to be unusual and exciting. I particularly enjoy her iconoclastic preference for opaque pigments and the way she showcases their unique qualities. Well written and lavishly illustrated, this book is a valuable reference work.

Although only one of the four chapters in The Art of Framing focuses on the actual craft of decorating frames, serious crafters and anyone interested in the use of framable objects in home decor should consider investing in this deluxe volume. More than 250 color photos document the history and art of framing, wonderful ways to create effective displays of framed items in the home, and how to decorate frames and mats with specialized treatments (faux finishes, gilding, craquelure, veneers) and decorative effects (stenciling, combing, painted motifs). The section on framing objects and ephemera offers unique ideas that crafters can adapt to show off their other creations.

A comprehensive art workshop from "pencil to palette." A step-by-step guide to projects in various media. Each project has a tutorial, "tricks of the trade," and instructions on how to work through common problems.
Customer Reviews:
Highly recommended, especially for the beginner.......2002-08-09
This well-structured, informative book is an excellent introduction to painting with watercolors, oils, acrylics, and pastels, each of which is given its own section. Taggart begins each section by detailing the basic necessities of the medium before launching into a series of lessons to introduce the reader to a variety of techniques. The approach is balanced and honest, never narrow-minded or preachy. The many "do's and don'ts" (my words, not the author's) are practical in nature, meant to help the beginner (or experienced artist) avoid or correct specific problems. Everything -- materials, techniques, and all -- is well-documented with words and illustrations...

Foreword by E.L. Doctorow.
When the Spanish Civil War began in 1936, loosely affiliated groups of writers, artists, and other politically aware individuals emerged in New York City to give voice to anti-fascist sentiment by supporting the Spanish Republic.
Facing Fascism: New York and the Spanish Civil War examines the participation of New Yorkers in the political struggles and armed conflict that many historians consider a critical precursor to World War II. Nearly half of the 2,800 Americans who volunteered to fight in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade against Generalissimo Francisco Franco came from the New York area. Fundraising, propaganda, and deployment for anti-fascists everywhere in America were orchestrated through New York City. At the same time, powerful voices in New York expressed sympathy for the pro-fascist side.
The fighting in Spain brought to the surface the complex ideological and ethnic identities always present in New York politics.
Facing Fascism examines the full range of this experience, including that of the New Yorkers who supported Franco. It addresses the role of doctors, nurses, and social workers who left New York hospitals to provide assistance to the defenders of the Spanish Republic, as well as those who remained active on the home front. The book also describes the involvement of students in the war, the key role of writers and the media, and the contributions made by members of New York's art and theater communities.
Facing Fascism also serves as the catalog to an exhibition of the same name appearing at the Museum of the City of New York in the spring of 2007. The book and exhibition both make use of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives' extensive holdings, which range from historical documents to video recordings of oral histories. Numerous other libraries, archives, museums, and private collectors have also been consulted to make this the most complete exhibition of its kind ever mounted. The exhibition will also appear in Spain.
Book Description
Bob Rowe and his wife Mary worked hard to build their American dream. A suburban home, barbecues in the summer, and a fast track corporate job made their life look ideal to outsiders. Yet they faced one of the most difficult challenges for a couple: their son Christopher was born severely handicapped and disabled. As a family, they managed to navigate through the tough times by being hands-on parents. Their efforts were emboldened by a group of extraordinary women - all of whom also had disabled children - who acted as a support system for one another.
Yet something slowly began to happen to Rowe . . . His deceased mother's voice started to reverberate in his head instructing him to murder his family; reality disintegrated and a new job was lost when it proved too overwhelming. Finally a short stay in a psychiatric hospital did nothing to quell his sudden volatility . . . In a horribly violent act, he killed his wife and children.
Seen through the eyes and thoughts of Rowe's friends and second wife (whom he married on release from the psychiatric hospital where he spent just a few years for the murder of his family), Salamon braids the story of a man's roller coaster life (from ideal family man to murderer to someone struggling for redemption) with the touching and heroic tales of the mothers who were left looking on in shock at the tragedy no one ever could have anticipated.
Customer Reviews:
Very well written but puzzling...hmmm.......2007-03-10
I thought Julie Salamon did an excellent job writing this book. I felt she was very objective, so objective in fact that I kept wondering why she wrote this book. It was almost like she didn't have an opinion about Bob Rowe and what he did; murdered his entire family in cold blood. For me it made me wonder...how should we judge people and how should we punish people? And how can we ever know what another person is truly capable of or what is really in their heart? Should someone like Bob Rowe ever be released? Personally I don't think someone should be set free after serving a minimal sentence when they have murdered their entire family. This book led me to another, as books always do, called The Sociopath Next Door also very interesting.
Not guilty by reason of insanity?.......2007-02-10
"Facing the Wind" tells us of the life of Bob Rowe, an attorney with a pretty and spirited Irish wife, Mary, and three children. Their middle child, Christopher, was exposed to Rubella in the womb and was born severely handicapped, both physically and mentally. The author gives us an interesting background on these "Rubella babies" and the disabilities that resulted. The disabilities varied, but nearly all were blind. We learn about the mothers and children who knew Mary and Bob, and all were amazed at what an active role Bob took in Christopher's life, helping equally along with Mary to provide the child with as normal a life as possible.
All seemed to be going well when one night, Bob decided to bludgeon his family to death with a baseball bat. First was Bobby, Jr., the eldest son, then Christopher and Jenny (their adopted daughter), and finally Mary, after he called her home from work to show her a surprise. He had her stand in the living room with her eyes closed, and then killed her, too. Afterwards, he turned the gas on in the oven and tried to kill himself by lining the door with plastic wrap, which one can assume Bob thought would help him inhale more gas.
Bob is found not guilty by reason of insanity because of the stress of his job and of raising a handicapped child. He is placed in a mental institution for several years. After he gets out, he meeds Colleen, a much younger woman - she is 19, I believe, and Bob is in his late 40's. Eventually, they are married and have a daughter. Colleen is aware of his past. The second half of the book, the slower half, is about their life together and Bob trying to get reinstated to the bar.
The author's writing flows nicely, and she provides letters Colleen wrote to Bob professing her love to him. She does not include any pictures, which was disappointing, but maybe Colleen Rowe asked her not to. I thought the author was very sympathetic to the Rowe side. I personally doubt his "innocence" because he came across as arrogant to me, and unremorseful. As a mother of two myself, I also doubt Colleen's stability if she thought it was a good idea to not only marry a man who bludgeoned his family to death, but to also have a child with him. Of course, you can draw your own conclusions on that.
All in all, I recommend this book. It's a good read.
Give me a break!.......2007-02-03
My biggest problem with this book is that the author tries to make it more socially meaningful than it is by telling it as the story of a man "overwhelmed" by the responsibilities of caring for a severely handicapped child -- hence a person we can all relate to on some level.
But NOBODY in the story actually says that Bob Rowe was overwhelmed! Bob coped quite well for many years until his mother died. Then he began to have hallucinations that his mother was telling him to kill his WIFE (not his handicapped son.) As a result he was hospitalized and medicated. Unsurprisingly, the medication prevented him from functioning as a cracker-jack lawyer, as he had previously, and he began to lose jobs. He developed an obsession with his dwindling finances. Eventually he decided to stop taking his medicine. At that point, he was both out of a job and psychotic. BOB says that the precipitating cause of his murdering his family was fear that he could no longer provide for them.
One of the prosecutors interviewed for this book says exactly the same thing. He says it's a "male ego" thing which is not at all uncommon in men (but very rare in women.) The man feels that he is a failure, that he can no longer take care of his family, ergo he has to kill himself, ergo he has to kill all of them too, because how could they survive without him?
In all of the court proceedings NOBODY says that Bob Rowe killed his family because he was overwhelmed by caring for a handicapped child. In fact, it's pointed out that, of his three children, he killed his handicapped son LAST. Also, that he had many many occasions to kill his handicapped son in a way which would have avoid all suspicion. If the handicapped son were the big issue in his life, why kill the whole family? Why not kill the son secretly (he took the kid sailing regularly and could easily have staged a sailing accident)?
I think the author is trying to manipulate the reader into feeling "there but for the Grace of God go I" (i.e., "perhaps I too would crack under similar unbearable strain") but this is just not supported by the facts -- unless the reader is concerned that they might suddenly become psychotic for no discernable reason.
Among many diagnoses given to Bob Rowe was "borderline personality disorder" and this is clearly correct in that he NEVER seems to have grasped the enormity of what he did. After he "recovered" (pretty much immediately in the sense of starting to perk right up and take care of his own interests) his big sorrow was the great injustice done to HIM in that he was unfairly blamed for something he wasn't responsible for. Here's the luckiest murderer in the history of the world -- three years in a mental institution, gets out, gets a new family, is surrounded by love and forgiveness -- and we're told that he's "devastated" that he can't get his law degree back! HE'S the victim!
If any one of us had a seizure disorder and we were supposed to be taking medicine for it, and the medicine was interferring with our ability to work, so we decided to stop taking the medicine, and then, while driving, we had a seizure and killed our whole family -- how would we be affected for the rest of our lives? Overwhelming despair? Guilt? Sorrow? (Or would we dedicate our lives to fighting the injustice of having our driver's license taken away?) But Bob whacks in the heads of four people with a baseball bat (fully aware of what he's doing and why -- only "psychotic" in the sense that he's making such a horrifically bad decision) and spends the rest of his life feeling sorry for himself!
BTW -- unlike others, I found the BEST part of this book to be the stories about the moms with handicapped kids. Frankly, as per above, I thought this really didn't have a whole lot to do with the murders, so actually it was pretty irrelevant to the book. But it was very interersting on its own -- in a way that the story of this murderer was not.
boring.......2005-04-05
i got into the 7th chapter of this book and i did'nt find it the least bit interesting what so ever.so i put it down, maybe it would have gotten better but as far as i got i was board out of my mind.
A Depressing but Important read.......2004-10-19
A very intriguing look at mental illness. A very sad story, that is about the death of one family that leads to the creation of another.

Book Description
'The cast of characters in Bruce Gilden's theatre of the street is outrageous. Sometimes tawdry and out of this world, they are mostly mysterious. To Gilden and to his fellow New Yorkers they're just neighbours. In broad and simple terms and with great expressive authority, Gilden has captured the uniquely individualistic, self-styled New York personality on the run. In Gilden's world, no-one is on the margins of centre stage, they are all star players.' - Susan Kismaric

The king of 'Street Level' photography........2005-03-22
One flick through this at one of my many Soho bookshop pitstops told me that this was a unique talent. Bruce is a master of what I dubbed 'Street Level' photography. It gives you the urge to grab your camera and just run out there, as anythings possible.
Bruce gives us big slices of life.
Better than any orchestrated setpiece, you just couldnt create these people, because they're real! This book has the elements that make NY such a haven for freaks, geeks, and showman streaks.
My personal fave is the black guy standing on the corner with his huge 'Marriage councelling' plaquard. Read the plaquard and you will DIE laughing.
You cant make this kind of thing up, its human nature.
The Debut Of One of Our Most Important Photographers.......2001-11-08
It's hard to describe Bruce Gilden. He's the Randy Johnson of street photography; one hand on his Leica rangefinder, the other on a flash, waiting to pounce on his next subject like a peregrine falcon. "Facing New York" was the book which made his reputation as a hard-edge street photographer of New York City life. He's as tenacious as any paparazzi, yet his photographs are more profound, more mesmerizing, than those of any celebrity-stalking photographer. If you think of combining William Klein's early raw, stark 1950's New York City images with Garry Winogrand's classic 1960's photos, then you're quite close to describing Bruce Gilden's unique style. None of Gilden's images may look comforting enough to hang in your living room, but they are worth owning via this elegant book.

Book Description
Over the past 30 years, anthropologists have moved into diverse workplaces, including private and public settings, that raise new issues for anthropology as a discipline, as well as for the discourse on science more generally. In the context of increasing globalization, the articulation of new ethical dilemmas around such issues as technology, indigenous knowledge and rights, governmental regulation, and bioethics among others, can inform and shape scientific public policy. The authors in this volume work in traditional research centers and universities as well as in private and public sectors, and across specialties that range from medical anthropology and social medicine to archaeology and cyberspace. They explore the dimensions of an "ethical anthropology" in today's world, and in the unique contribution of anthropology to the sciences.

Book Description
Death, a topic often neglected by historians, is in this book given the attention it deserves as one of the most important aspects of personal and societal experience. Facing the "King of Terrors" examines changes in the roles and perceptions of death in one American community, Schenectady, New York, from 1750 to 1990. It combines an in-depth look at patterns of death in society as a whole with an investigation of personal responses to such cultural customs.
Book Description
Leading housing scholars and practitioners provide a comprehensive, up-to-date description and analysis of housing and community development policy as they examine one of America's largest and most important cities.
Throughout the nation's history, New York City has been at the forefront of housing policy creativity and innovation. As the federal government's role in social policy continues to shrink and authority devolves to local governments, the focus in urban policy turns to America's cities. New York City's experience provides useful lessons for other municipalities on both the opportunities and pitfalls for government intervention in the housing market.
Housing and Community Development in New York City comprehensively explores a full range of policy issues including the analysis of current housing problems and demographics; examination of federally supported housing assistance programs such as public housing and Section 8; scrutiny of the City's response to homelessness and the abandonment of private sector housing; and a look at New York's innovative program to rebuild neighborhoods with public-private partnerships.
