4 out of 5 stars much practical advice for transit planning.......2006-09-24

How to plan an urban transit system of buses and trains? Vuchic offers a text suitable to accompany an undergraduate course in urban planning. It describes many aspects of transit. Like the ability to have articulated buses that have capacities 50% greater than standard buses. By using these on dedicated bus lanes, overall transit capacity can be enhanced. We see how multiple public agencies need to cooperate, to let such methods achieve optimal potential.

Rail transit is extensively studied. Including the all-important aspect of scheduling. There is some maths required of the student. But the text is not a fully fledged foray into scheduling theory. Chapters have numerous exercises that help the reader gain some fluency in understanding scheduling.

Another related aspect is the geometry of transit lines. How to best lay out these lines. We see that there are systematic mathematical ideas that can be applied. It's not just some qualitative handwaving.

    Book Description

Schedule-Based Dynamic Transit Modeling: Theory and Applications outlines the new schedule-based dynamic approach to mass transit modeling. In the last ten years the schedule-based dynamic approach has been developed and applied especially for operational planning. It allows time evolution of on-board loads and travel times for each run of each line to be obtained, and uses behavioral hypotheses strictly related to transit systems and user characteristics. It allows us to open new frontiers in transit modelling to support network design, timetable setting, investigation of congestion effects, as well as the assessment of new technologies introduction, such as information to users (ITS technologies).

The contributors and editors of the book are leading researchers in the field of transportation, and in this volume they build a solid foundation for developing still more sophisticated models. These future models of mass transit systems will continue to add higher levels of accuracy and sensitivity desired in forecasting the performance of public transport systems.

Visual art - Modernism in pictures

This groundbreaking visual guide to the evolution of Modernist art is an indispensable reference for any art lover or student. From its Impressionistic beginnings in the late 19th century to the pluralistic art scene of the present, the development of Modernism is presented as a coherent, unified, and meaningful process.

Description and analysis have been eliminated in favor of a colorful, well-organized, and highly visual presentation, which shows the simultaneous, chronological evolutions of four categories of Modernist attitudes: realistic, structural, romantic, and symbolist. From Manet to Pop Art, from Cézanne to Minimal Art, from Van Gogh to Abstract Expressionism, from Ensor to Surrealism and Arte Povera - a wide range of modern art movements and artists are represented and compared, allowing the reader to locate artwork psychologically, stylistically, and historically. A beautiful and original work, a new way to study art.

                1 out of 5 stars All Smiles...NOT!.......2002-09-19

All Smiles by Stella Cameron did not make me smile...I thought it was the worst! I hated most of the characters and thought the plot was stupid. As a rule I generally like Stella Cameron books, but not this time. I thought All Smiles was a major disappointment. If you want to read a few worth while books try anything by Kim Corum, Kate White, or Adele Lang.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best in the series.......2001-05-04

I have to say I was very disappointed in this book. More & More (7 Mayfair Square series, 1) and 7B (3rd in series) were much, much better. I disliked Count Etranger immensely. He was overbearing, arrogant, selfish, foul-tempered, and autocratic. I found it incredibly hard to believe that Meg Smiles' had any difficulty in deciding if she should be Jean-Marc's mistress after what she did with him (and to him) in his bedroom the first day she met him. I found that scene in poor taste since it was so soon in their acquaintance. Jean-Marc seemed to know how to say what Meg wanted to hear. For a man who wanted to coax her into being his mistress (because she wasn't socially acceptable as a wife for him) he did a poor job, even shouting at her in front of people on one occasion.

Oddly enough I liked both characters much better in Meg's sister Sibyl's book, 7B. Although Meg seemed a bit arrogant too there (must be hubby's influence). The interesting thing about All Smiles was its introduction of the Count's half-sister, Princess Desiree. I am hoping she gets her own book - with Adam Chillworth as the hero of course!

5 out of 5 stars Keeps you turning those pages!.......2001-04-13

I just loved More and More ... now the All Smiles! We can't wait to read the next episode I easily fell in Love with all the populace of Mayfair Square, they are very inexplicable, hilarious enjoyable to read about. Stella always has a way of writing that adds fun, mystery and great sex to her books. Meg and Jean-Marc are fantastic together. I also love that Stella doesn't make you wait, wondering, just when they are going to admit they want each other! Stella is a great author and never predictable.... that's why I love her works! I can't wait to hear about the other inhabitants.

4 out of 5 stars Good But Not Cameron's Best.......2000-05-05

The Mayfair stories are delightful but still not up to Cameron's usual delights. This story is funny, sad, cute and sexy. Jean-Marc and Meg are a delight. He so magnificent and authorative and Meg so assertive and commanding. It is nice to see a heroine who is not stupid, timid and has no backbone.

The dialogue is fast paced and the story moves at an adequate pace. Even if not her best, it's a Cameron, what more can I say.

                1 out of 5 stars All Frowns.......2000-04-01

Others have already summarized the story for you. I am simply going to say that I found that there were too many unnecessary sub-plots. Meg, the heroine, went from being a free thinking, independent, and passionate woman with Prince Jean-Marc one moment, to a "wimp" with others who were either downright rude or demanding the next. I thought that Cameron couldn't decide who she wanted as her villian and so one minute it was the ghost. The next it was the prince's rude mistress, and yet another time it was her distant male cousin. I believe that romance books should leave me wanting to rush out and buy the author's next novel. I believe that romance novels are a neat past time that entertain better than TV and should make you cry a little and smile alot. This one just made me tired!

5 out of 5 stars Second Time Around.......2006-01-28

I was given a signed copy (by Sarah Weeks) and cassette tape when my boys were young (they are 15 & 17 now). My boys & I always had it in our car for road trips and knew all of the words to every song. I no longer have the cassette and am going to buy the CD for the book, as I am pregnant now with a little girl and can't wait to share the songs with her!

                4 out of 5 stars neat book.......2004-11-08

This is a unique book and cd combination. Each page features an animal and a song written from the point of view of that animal. Some of the animals featured are a dinosaur, a panda and a turtle.

Most of the songs are soft and slow. This would make a great bedtime cd and book.

Young children who are animal lovers will enjoy this book and CD. It will be neat for them to try and think the way their favorite animal thinks.

5 out of 5 stars This used to be my favorite book!.......2002-01-11

When I was younger I loved this book and would listen to the tape all the time. I bet if I heard the tape today I would still know every word. I recomend this book for any kid!

5 out of 5 stars More than my son..........2000-04-04

My mother bought Crocodile Smile for my son when he was one. Heloves it and is always asking for "the blue tape," but I'mthe one who can't stop humming it. It is the most interesting children's music that we own (both music and lyrics). I'm buying it for gifts for others. END

5 out of 5 stars This book is warm and wonderful!.......1999-11-10

The songs are fun for the kids, however they are poinantly meaningful for the adults. The artists voice is very soothing and I use it every night to put my 3yo son to bed. I love this book and tape... It is one of my house holds favorites!

                            Book Description

Chase and Beau both came from the streets. Different circumstances put them there. Different solutions got them off and back into productive society. One event linked them together. Chase met and fell in love with his soul mate and became a best-selling author and a well-known spokesman for social injustice. Beau also met his perfect man and became known through an unfortunate accident, becoming the face behind the struggle for equal rights. Two separate lives travel the same path, meet and experience a deadly encounter together, and then unite to overcome prejudice and adversity to achieve success in a cause designed to help others. A story of life, love, loss, struggle and ultimate sacrifice on the road for equality, All It Took Was His Smile is both a sad and joyful story. It will appeal to every emotion, and it will leave a lasting impression.

                                Book Description

This book examines a source of much mystery and consternation to your average role-player, The Female Gamer and the female of the species in general. The only culture present here should be examined under a slide and given a long Latin name before being exterminated with penicillin. None of this should be taken as offensive, though it probably will be. If you cannot see that we are also taking the Mickey out of male gamers as much, if not more, than gamers of the female persuasion then you need a humour transplant and a kick up your pert, well rounded, tightly chain mail clad arse. Please accept that most gamers do not have issues with women - they have a subscription, a complete collection from issue one and fancy binders to keep them in. Female gamers are a completely unknown quantity to the vast and overwhelming majority of gamers, though matters have been ever so slowly changing in that regard. As these creatures become more populous in the gaming fraternity it behooves the male gamer to at least make an attempt understand this creature and to make preparations for their increasing invasion. It would not do to be caught unawares by any new creature or trap and every adventurer's motto should be 'Be prepared', rather than 'Experience points! Chaaaaaarge!'
