        Book Description

Meeting the new opportunities for rural living demands imaginative design, and many of the world’s most inventive architects are rising to this challenge. Among those featured in this book are well-known names like Kengo Kuma, Steven Holl, Lacaton Vassal, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Baumschlager + Eberle, Niall McLaughlin and Sean Godsell, as well as a host of talented architects from Russia to South Africa, Chile to China, New Zealand to the US.

What makes the demand for new and challenging architecture all the greater is the rapidly changing relationship between countryside and city, driven by social and technological development. In these circumstances, precedents from history and tradition are at best starting points: imagination, innovation and creativity are essential to do full justice to new challenges, expectations and opportunities. As urban life becomes increasingly rarified and stressful, so the contrast with raw nature assumes a different value to its status in past centuries, when architects generally sought to bring nature under human control. So this book divides houses into sections that reflect elemental qualities of landscape, forest, plain, ocean and mountain, as well as a section on houses that update the tradition of manipulating nature into telling a story.

5 out of 5 stars Not a book for the casual crafter.......2007-08-17

This book is the jewelry makers bible. I cannot begin to scratch the surface of its value by lising content. It is a gem of a book (pun intended).

Oppi Untracht did the jewelry industry and anyone serious about learning jewelrymaking the right way, a HUGE service by compiling the information in this book and presenting it in clear and easy to understand language. This book must have taken years of research and editing to produce and publish. That, my friends who harp about price, is why this book is so high priced. It is not over-priced, it is aptly priced. Think how much the Oxford English Dictionary costs- [...]
it's just words, why so expensive?!

You could learn a new technique or factoid every day for a year from this book and then start all over again and learn even more.
This book, however, is not for teaching silver or goldsmithing, gem setting, etc. It is not a how-to book at all. It is a reference book, like the ones that the library won't let you check out because they're too valuable.

If you are serious about jewelry making, fine and art jewelry- not hobby craft wire and bead stringing- put this on your wish list. You'll be thrilled if someone sends it to you for a birthday or holiday gift. If nobody will kick for it, save your nickles and find a used one, reclaiming the silver from spent pickle solution and making solder from scratch never goes out of style.

                      5 out of 5 stars Jewelry Concepts & Technology.......2007-06-12

This book was purchased to replace a book lost out of our Mineral & Gem Society library. We have many master gemologists and geologists in the club and each speaks highly of this book. It's full of basics but also provides information for the advanced jeweler. Highly recommneded.

5 out of 5 stars Untracht for All Jewelry Artists.......2007-05-29

Jewelry Concepts and Technoloty by Oppi Untracht is the must reference text for the jewelry artist. Untracht provides historical reference for styles and techniques, clearly explains how various techniqures can be utilized by beginners, advanced art jewelry students and professionals. If that is not enough, the visuals and historical references stimulate the imagine.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute must for every metalsmith / jewelry designer........2006-08-12

In this volume Oppi Untracht offers an excellent overview of metal jewelry making. The seemingly limitless information offered is technically precise, and beautifully illustrated.

Note this is not a step by step manual, however it will lend itself most useful with almost any project of your choosing.

Many may shy away from purchasing this due to the price, but one must consider the priceless information / references its pages withold. EVERY jewelry maker will consider this their
"bible", and keep it close at hand.

4 out of 5 stars Overview versus Technical Know How.......2006-06-29

This is a good book for those wanting a broad overview of all aspects of jewellery making with metals. It contains good illustrations of finished pieces; however, it is not a book that gives step by step instructions. So, if you are looking for a 'how to' book, look elsewhere. Otherwise it is a useful reference but not essential.

This beautiful book presents a new perspective on C_zanne`s landscape paintings, comparing them to color photographs of the same sites. Machotka, himself an artist, provides a close and thorough examination of how Czanne transformed nature into art, and the result is an original and illuminating study of the great painter`s methods and techniques.

                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have book for the plein air painter.......2007-06-17

Although this is a great book for any art lover it is a must for the plein air (outdoor) painter. It demonstrates how Cezanne transformed his "motif", the scene he has selected, into a painting by showing photos of the motif side by side with his paintings. Machotka, an artist himself, discusses the artistic problems presented by each scene and Cezanne's various solutions as they vary over his development as an artist. Machotka is knowledgeable, thoughtful and writes well. This book will certainly extend your appreciation of Cezanne and if you paint plein air, will likely make you a much more observant and better painter. As a painter this is one of the few books on composition and technique that I recommend to other painters.

                      5 out of 5 stars looking.......2000-07-29

Cezanne's influence on Cubism and later abstract styles can make the viewer forget just how important looking at his native landscape was to the painter. This wonderful book helps us see the fascinating ways Cezanne succeeded in "realizing his sensations" in front of nature and landscape. A book to return to again and again.

                      5 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK.......2000-07-21

This is by far one of the best books I have ever read and had. Machotka details Cezanne in a great way. I was never a great fan of Cezanne before purchasing this book, now I'm a devoted fan! Cezanne would be proud to have someone like Machotka writing about his work.

                          Book Description

Landscape architecture is a key profession for a world facing an uncertain environmental future. Yet it is hindered by a chronic identity crisis: Is it primarily concerned with making beautiful places, helping people or saving the planet from ecological catastrophe? This book examines the three principle value systems which influence landscape architectural practice, the aesthetic, the social and the environmental, and seeks to discover the role that the profession should be playing now and for the future.

                          Book Description

America's premiere aviation artist, William S. Phillips has spent a lifetime in the aviation field, on the ground and in the air. More than an airplane portraitist, Phillips is a superb landscape and "skyscape" painter who places his subject in geographic and historical context. A tight formation of F-4 Phantoms scream over Crater Lake, Oregon; the Blue Angels soar in exhibition near the California coast; there is a violent confrontation between a German Bf-109 and a RAF Spitfire above the white cliffs of Sussex's Beachy Head; a line of Bell Hueys pass through a monsoon-soaked valley in the central highlands of Vietnam. Bill Phillips understands the place and purpose of each of his subjects. As an artist, he also appreciates the natural beauty of landscape and atmosphere. In a Phillips canvas, the viewer can almost feel the G-force on his body from the ground-blurring speed of the plane, his mouth go dry in the desert air, or the chill on his neck when it's so cold it hurts to breathe. Immediately apparent in Phillips' military aviation art is his respect for the men and women who risk their lives to protect the values we cherish: family, home, and freedom. Williams S. Phillips majored in criminology in college, and served four years in the Air Force including a tour in viet Nam. He was planning to attend law school when four of his paintings were sold. His life's work as a fine art painter had begun. Phillips was commissioned by the Royal Jordanian Air Force to develop sixteen major paintings, many of which now hang in their Air Force Museum in Amman. In 1986, the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum presented a one-man show of Phillips' work. (He is one of only a few artists to have been so honored.) In 1988, Phillips was chosen to be a US Navy combat artist, and was awarded the Navy's Meritorious Public Service Award and the Air Force Sergeants Association's Americanism Medal for his outstanding work. His art has appeared in numerous museum exhibitions including the 2003 United States Air Force Museum's "Centennial Celebration of Aviation Art." In the past fifteen years, Phillips' paintings have regularly been among the Top 100 in the National Parks Service's Arts for the Parks shows. In the fall of 2004, the artist was chosen by the US Park Service to be its first Artist-in-Residence in the Grand Canyon. He has twice been commissioned by the US Postal Service to produce a body of paintings for an aviation history stamp series, once in 1994, and again in 2005.

                          5 out of 5 stars Amazing art/coffee table book.......2007-06-12

Whether an old hand or new to aviation art, this is the book to own. Phillips' art is in itself amazing. However, the presentation and accompanying words make the book even better. The size of the book ensures the reader can appreciate the art without the distraction of page gutters and make it perfect for display. Ann and Charlie Cooper have done a wonderful job describing the thoughts and ideas behind each piece of art - very well researched. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificient Aviation Fine Art Book and Much More.......2006-01-02

This is simply a magnificent book. I own three dozen other aviation fine art books. If I could have only one of them on my shelf, it would be this one. I'll try to explain why.

The selection of over 150 subjects from the artist's vast portfolio is very satisfying. The book has many air combat paintings, 21 of his USPS postage stamps, and enough of the town of Phillip's Bay to make you feel at home there. There is great variety. The subjects include the very popular fighters & bombers of WWII, but there are many less-often-seen aviation subjects- military trainers, helicopters, jets, blimps, flying boats plus sailboats, lighthouses, trains, and a classic car or two. At the same time, there is a sense of harmony.

The layout and reproduction values are excellent. The size is the definative "aviation fine art coffee table book" format. This means that the page gutter rarely interferes with the reader's ability to enjoy the art.

The book has exceptional visual impact, but the appeal goes much deeper. Beyond the visual statements of the art itself, Bill Phillips has a lot to say. The Coopers' well-crafted text blends it all together -- the artist's biography, his thoughts and reflections, and the stories behind the paintings. When they are finished, they have drawn the reader in, and made the art much more personal.

This book will hold your attention and entertain you for a long time. I hope you get the chance to enjoy this book as much as I have.

Very Good! Not about technique, there are too many books about that. This is about thinking!

                          3 out of 5 stars Dissapointed.......2003-07-28

I am not very satisfied with this book. I ordered based on the comments and the 5 stars given to this book. I did notice it was only based on 2 reviews. I would be more careful next time.

The photos of the artists painting are mostly too small to see the details. Some beautiful painting photos printed in large were blur. At least I could learn the process and thinking of those wonderful artists from this book.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice little book.......2003-03-25

This book visits many different approaches to still-life painting with color photos everywhere. As an artist the pictures are what I study. In this book it is very interesting to read about each artists thought processes. It is not all technique orietnted it goes deeper. A great value.

5 out of 5 stars A helpful, well laid out book.......2003-03-15

Theodora Philcox has created a very helpful book on the still life. There is a wide range of styles and several very fine artists. Philcox takes the artists' own explanations of their techniques and adds some of her own helpful comments and observations. Styles of art are juxtaposed giving the reader a good view of different approaches to their art. Of special interest is the work of artist Timothy C. Tyler whose realistic and brushy artwork steals the show.
