Book Description

Since this classic work in phonology was published in 1968, there has been no other book that gives as broad a view of the subject, combining generally applicable theoretical contributions with analysis of the details of a single language. The theoretical issues raised in The Sound Pattern of English continue to be critical to current phonology, and in many instances the solutions proposed by Chomsky and Halle have yet to be improved upon.

Noam Chomsky and Morris Halle are Institute Professors of Linguistics and Philosophy at MIT.

5 out of 5 stars The first and last word on this subject.......2001-07-02

The Sound Pattern of English (known as "SPE") is the most complete study of the phonology of any language that has ever been undertaken. It is the last word on English stress, vowels, and consonants. It will also tell you everything you need to know about how to write phonological rules, covering complexities like parentheses, parenthesis-star, curly brackets, angled brackets, and everything else. Chomsky and Halle also tell us about their discovery of "distinctive" "features", which are the universal sound system of every language. We owe them a great debt of gratitude for this stunning achievement. "'SPE'" was Chomsky's last work on phonology, so you can see what a loss it was that he decided to switch to syntax.

      Book Description

Sound Patterns of Spoken English is a concise, to-the-point compendium of information about the casual pronunciation of everyday English as compared to formal citation forms. The book examines changes that occur to certain sounds and in certain parts of words and syllables in the casual, unmonitored speech of native English speakers. It outlines major phonological processes found in conversational English; reviews and criticizes attempts to include these processes in phonological theory; and surveys experimental approaches to explaining casual English pronunciation. Among the varieties of English covered are General American and Standard Southern British, but many other accents are mentioned, especially those of mainland Britain.Sound Patterns of Spoken English is of interest to students and scholars in a wide variety of fields, including sociolinguistics, lexicography, rhetoric, language learning and speech sciences, and has an accompanying website - http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/shockey - with examples from different accents.

      Book Description

This 141-page book is a readable, practical overview of the sounds of the English language and their representations in print. It describes how to help beginning readers decode words in print by learning their phonic structure. It contains specific examples of teaching tools and strategies for developing decoding skills, including sample worksheets and memory-aid pictures. The chapter on "phonemic awareness"--the ability to recognize and use the separate sounds that make up our spoken language--and the comprehensive appendix of prefixes and suffixes make this book a valuable reference for any teacher of reading. It is also the cornerstone of Concept Phonics, Dr. Fischer's highly successful multisensory program for teaching reading-decoding and spelling to students of any age.

4 out of 5 stars Use the decoding process described to improve reading skills.......1999-04-01

This book is about Phonics. Although the first chapter is not written for children, it is very helpful in explaining how to de-code the mystery words. This book should be used by person's who may be assisting anyone with reading instruction. The book includes work pages (with answers given in the back of the book) and easy to understand text. This book is an excellent resource for teachers and also for parents who may be supplimenting the school's reading program. The book would be invaluable for parents who home-school. If you have ever wondered why the word "happening" is spelled using just one "n" and the word "beginning" is spelled using two "n"'s, this book will answer that question and many more!

                  Book Description

Pioneer Pottery is a classic text in ceramic literature. Author Michael Cardew was one of the early and influential figures in British ceramics. In 1942, the Crown Agents asked him to go to Nigeria to set up a pottery training center. It was his experiences there as well as his previous time spent in the Gold Coast that formed the basis for this book that has influenced generations of potters around the world.

This completely redesigned new edition was planned in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Cardew's birth. His son, Seth Cardew, himself a well-known potter, has written a new introduction to this volume. A new full-color section featuring photographs of previously unshown work is also included.

This book has brought great inspiration and guidance to potters for decades. This new and updated edition will educate and enlighten for decades to come.

5 out of 5 stars Strongly recommended reading for students of the art.......2002-08-06

First published 33 years ago by Michael Cardew, a respected expert in British ceramics, Pioneer Pottery is a superbly presented and classic work enhanced with excellent black/white illustrations and photography (including a new color section of previously unshown works), and a new introduction by the author's son. An extremely solid reference to the art of pottery, from the chemical composition of pottery clay to sculpting, firing, and painting, Pioneer Pottery is a first-rate guide and is strongly recommended reading for students of the art, history, and joy of pottery.

                                    Book Description

The Family of Man, a photography exhibit curated by Edward Steichen, opened at the Museum of Modern Art in 1955. More people saw that exhibit than any other show of photographs, and the book of the same title remains in print to this day. Despite the enormous success of this assemblage of photographs, surprisingly little critical attention has been paid to The Family of Man as a phenomenon.

Eric Sandeen presents here the first in-depth study of the exhibit and its influence worldwide. He examines how the exhibit came to be assembled, the beliefs and background Edward Steichen brought to the project, and what he wanted to show about the human condition from his selection of images. He then looks at the politics and culture of the 1950s to determine why the show was so popular at the time. When the United States Information Agency toured the photographs throughout the world in five different versions for seven years, The Family of Man became a symbol for and projection of American values and the culture of abundance.

The richness and historical complexity of this exhibit have been overlooked, especially in the post-Vietnam decades, as critics have been quick to dismiss it as sentimental. Sandeen shows the exhibit to be a great deal more than a compendium of beautiful but unchallenging photographs. He also unfolds its multilayered relationship with and reflection of the values of postwar America.

5 out of 5 stars The book is just photography at its best........1999-06-24

First printed in the 50's, "The Family of Man" is just loaded with images that we see until today, a history of photography. Hundreds of photographers from several countries sent their best images to this exposition. The result is this particular book.

Strategic Database Marketing is the only resource to explain database marketing from the customer's point of view, instead of the seller's. Now, as exploding research and technology create entirely new market challenges, the Second Edition of this influential bestseller explains the method for computing RFM (Reach, Frequency, Monetary), as well as covering recently developed tools and resources including the Internet, loyalty programs, customer-specific marketing, and more.

3 out of 5 stars Useful content, but not well written.......2007-08-01

For anyone who's looking for a well-written reflection on state-of-the-art direct marketing, this is not the right book. Yet, Arthur Hughes' 'Strategic Database Marketing' still has its merits.

It's a straight-forward introductory text that covers many aspects of direct marketing - mostly from an old-economy point of view. The good thing about this approach is that Hughes explains many procedures in detail that have proved to be useful over many years of practice (as he lets the reader know on many occasions, he has worked in direct marketing for a long time). And while the dull writing-style occasionally makes the content of the book seem dated, most of the ideas discussed in the book still apply. For example, Hughes does a good job explaining lifetime-value calculations, the Recency-Frequency-Monetary approach, regression analysis and other useful tools for anyone involved in direct marketing.

Unfortunately, it's not an enjoyable book. The biggest drawback is that Hughes doesn't come across as an agile intellect. He's good at explaining procedure, but rather clumsy in discussing ideas. Adding to that is his over-reliance on examples taken from his own private life (you'll learn many things about his wife that you never wanted to know) and his strange need to praise the superiority of the American economy whenever possible. If you can look past that, 'Strategic Database Marketing' may well be worth reading for any professional marketeer.

I love this book. Working as a data analyst in the CRM department, this book teaches me all the practical caculation/ideas for my work.

So far, this is the only book on the market that view database marketing from a quantitative point of view. On the other hand, it also instills the relationship marketing mind-set to the readers. For the rest of books avaliable in the markertplace on CRM/Database marketing, either it's too theoretical or IT. This is the best I read so far.

My approach to marketing was totally changed by reading this book; I was able to refine a jumble of thoughts into a clear, cohesive strategy. If you are at all exposed to marketing at work, Hughes will give you the ability to prioritize what is most important in your job.

Hughes has just released a new edition of this classic. It is thoroughly updated to include developments of the last half decade (the failure of CRM in many applications, advancements in Web and e-mail marketing, etc). Every marketer and entrepreneur should read this book to learn how and why lifetime value is so important and how to build your company's strategy around it.

The best thing about this book is that it covers the technical details adequately, but is still readable enough that you do not need an MBA to understand it.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Coverage of Important Marketing Concepts.......2003-08-15

Hughes makes it exceedingly clear why customer loyalty and lifetime value are such critical marketing concepts. Hughes helps marketers understand why our hyper-focus on customer acquisition needs to be adjusted to consider retention and upsell as well.

                                    In particular, Hughes explains:

                                    * What Lifetime Value (LTV) is, why it matters, and how to calculate it
                                    * The importance of testing programs and how best to go about it
                                    * Segmenting your customer base by loyalty and LTV
                                    * How tactics should differ for each segment
                                    * Practical tips for creating a successful database marketing campaign.

Case studies and ROI numbers are used throughout the book. A must read for marketing proessionals.

                                        Book Description

Greenfield sites around towns and cities, and redevelopment infill sites in existing urban areas often become battlegrounds between the conflicting interests of developers and communities.

In America, design charrettes (intensive design and planning workshops) have become widely used as a means of bringing together these divergent groups, using detailed design exercises to establish agreement around a development masterplan. Despite the increasing frequency of their use, charrettes are widely misunderstood and can be misapplied. This book provides a detailed guidance on the proper and most effective ways to use this helpful tool. The book combines charrette masterplanning with the creation of "design-based" codes (also known as "form-based" codes) to control the development's implementation in line with the design and planning principles established during the charrette process.

This a great adaptation of a story that covered thirteen episodes. The main story was twelve episodes. The series now has thirteen episode seasons. The second part isDoctor Who the Daleks' Masterplan, Part II: The Mutation of Time (Target Doctor Who Library, No 142). This is a great adaptation because it gives the feel of how the actual show was on tv, which is important because only two episodes exist. It also gives a good feel for how the William Hartnell Doctor was. Which isn't surprising since he's John Peel's favorite Doctor

3 out of 5 stars Daleks' Master Plan begins.......2000-10-27

Arguably, the longest story in Doctor Who's history is 'The Daleks' Master Plan', which lasted 12 episodes to the main story and a one episode prologue. (I say arguably, since 'The Trial of a Time Lord' went for 14 episodes, but had a number of sub-stories.)

This novel is the adaptation of the prologue and first six episodes. It is written as a "stand alone" book, and could be read separately from the second part ('The Mutation of Time') if you really wanted and couldn't find the second part. (It is certainly a better tactic than trying to cram so much information into a single volume - witness the adaptation of 'The War Games' for a different way of adapting a long story.)

In essence, the Daleks and a number of other alien races form an alliance to invade human space (or the Solar System, as the story oddly refers to it). They have constructed a secret weapon which requires a Tarranium core to power it. The Doctor, with companions Steven and Katarina arrive on the planet Kembal and stumble into the investigation of Space Security Service agent Bret Vyon.

Little do any of them know, but there is a traitor in the hierarchy of the human government.

Possibly the main fault of this story is that it is a little meandering - not as bad as, say, 'The Keys of Marinus' and 'The Chase', but containing some things that could have been left out in the original. John Peel, however, correctly retains them in this adaptation.

What Mr. Peel does do is insert a wide variety of references to the universe of Doctor Who that, in 1965 when this story was shown, hadn't yet been thought of. By doing so, he adds to the text. It is also interesting to see how he layers the prologue into rest of the story.

As such, this novelisation not only stands in for the original story (most of which no longer exists on tape), but is probably a more enjoyable read for Doctor Who fans than a straightforward adaptation would have been.

Not a bad book. Not a good book. A wasted opportunity So much more could have been done with this. Insight into Dalek culture. Insight into the mind of arch traitor Mavic Chen. Insight into the races of the outer galaxies. Even some knowledge of earth history of that period. Katarina, the first of the Doctor's companions to ever perish, does so and, in a particulary nasty way, and, except for Steven, no one really cares. Not even the author. By the story's end, the reader barely even remembers that she existed. Still. At least, the Doctor Who fan has the full story. Continued in The Mutation of Time.

                                            Book Description

For some 20 years, Kunming, a provincial capital city in China - 3.2 million inhabitants - has been the twin city of the European metropolis Zurich. As a direct result of this partnership, Kunming now has the first inner-city bus line in China, the first large-scale conservation of a historical part of the town, and new concepts for urban development at a regional level. This pioneering collaboration between western and Chinese planning teams, and the experience acquired in managing urban development projects, are not only significant for Kunming, but of importance for all countries interested in sharing the expertise and knowledge of professionals, whether from East or West, North or South. The challenge lies in reconciling the traditional and historical background of large Asian cities with their zeal for progress, so they may benefit from western technology and practice but avoid repeating the same mistakes on an even larger scale.

This is a follow up to Doctor Who The Daleks' Masterplan I Mission to the Unknown. It is notable for the return of The Meddling Monk, an annoying charcter from the Docter's own race, who adds comic relief to what is a dark story. Between the two novels two of the Doctor's companions die to help defeat the Daleks. However, the first few chapters of this novel are rather light because the episode they are based on was broadcast on Christmas night 1965. The Docter even starts pie fight on a movie set, and somehow escapes unscathed.

3 out of 5 stars Daleks' Master Plan ends.......2000-10-17

This is the adaptation of the final six episodes of Doctor Who's season three magnus opus, 'The Daleks' Master Plan'. It picks up where the previous novel. 'Mission to the Unknown', finished.

What is unfortunate about this is that it starts with the episode 'The Feast of Steven'. When this story was shown, its seventh episode was broadcast on Christmas Day. Feeling that the story was a bit grim for Christmas viewing, a strange episode featuring a visit to a Hollywood studio and an English police station was produced. Even accepting the logic of going this in the first place, it does seem very out of place in the novel.

The story is properly resumed, as the Doctor, Steven and Sara are soon not only faced by the Daleks and their allies, but also by the Monk, another Time Lord with whom the Doctor and Steven had had a previous conflict.

The full details of the Daleks' plan come to light, leading to conflict within the alliance. The climax of the story is truly apocalyptic.

As with the previous part of the story, John Peel imbues his adaptation with references to the Doctor Who universe.

2 out of 5 stars acceptable but a wasted oppurtunity.......2000-01-08

The Dalek Masterplan was a massive 12 part Doctor Who epic that was mostly destroyed by the BBC. Only two episodes survive. It deserves better than this. Not that it is badly written, it is just not particulary well written either. It's like reading about the events surrounding The Dalek's plan to use the Time Destructor to conquer the galaxy as reported by the New York Times. Dry and lifeless. So much more could have been done. See the novels The Power of the Daleks or The Mythmakers as examples. Still, it is the only way to experience the story and the Doctor Who fan(and that is the only one who would ever read it) can bring his or her imagination and knowledge of the show along to spice things up.
