Book Description
From the 1890 penny arcades and the opulent and ornate movie houses of the 1920s and 1930s to the drive-in theatres of the 1950s and the multiplex cinemas of today, movie theatres have provided an environment where millions of Americans learned about life, culture, politics, romance, and sex. In this entertaining and lively book, Maggie Valentine examines theatres as products and symbols of their time, and shows how they influenced and were influenced by architectural trends and the economic, social, and political forces of the era.
Customer Reviews:
A great book.......2000-02-11
I am a brazilian architect, working now in a thesis research about movie theaters located in my city, Porto Alegre, in the south of Brazil. I found this book in B&N store, in New York. It's a great book! GOOD for my work in research end for teaching architecture design (at an architecture school)about movie theaters. (sorry for my poor english...)
The best book on this subject I have ever read!.......1999-06-01
Having worked and managed movie theatres from the 40s thru early 70s, and now considered a "dinosaur" of that age, was completely captivated by the coverage accomplished by Ms.Valentine, especially on the accomplishments of architect Lee.She captured the "flavor" and context of that wonderful era, never to be again. And surprise of surprises,I actually managed or knew intimately of some of the theatres Mr.Lee designed or worked on! I have nearly all the books published on movie theatres,et al,but have to admit this particular tome really grabbed me emotionally with text and photos so for the while it took me to read this book(hard to put down)I re-lived that era in a way I never thought possible. (The Arden in Lynwood, Tower in L.A., the old Alhambra in Alhambra, are only a few I "set foot in again"!)..if I could give it more than 5 stars I would! A tip of my hat to Ms.Valentine, to Mr.Lee, and the great bunch of people I worked with, and for, oh, so many, many years ago
I am author's brother and hope everyone will buy one.......1998-01-10
My sister has written a very intelligent and well thought out book. She deserves to be rich and famous.

Silver Screens: A Pictorial History of Milwaukee's Movie Theaters
ASIN: 0786423080 |
Product Description
This history and catalog of the movie theaters of Illinois follows their evolution from the early opera houses, to the storefront nickelodeons, to the awe-inspiring movie palaces, to the postWorld War II theaters and the advent of the multiplex. Each theater has its own story, and together these stories make up a fascinating history of cinema viewing in Illinois. This richly illustrated bookthe first dealing exclusively with Illinois theatres contains nearly 3,000 descriptions of historic movie houses, from the early 1880s to 1960. The alphabetically arranged entries, which include such information as the theaters name, location, number of seats, and the dates it opened and closed, cover cities and towns from Abingdon to Zion, including Chicago and its surrounding suburbs. The book opens with a history of the movie house, beginning with silent movies shown on walls and ending with the multiplex era. It also includes a chapter on television's impact and information on renovated historic theatres in the state. Appendices include lists of Illinois-operated movie theatre circuits, theatre websites and include a bibliography.

Book Description
Often referred to as the city of the future, Los Angeles is known for its sprawl, its constant change, and its special relationship to the film industry. The twelve contributors to Looking for Los Angeles focus on dramatic shifts in the urban landscape, important moments in the city's
architectural history, and the role of the image in this mecca of image makers.
Dutch writer Cees Nooteboom searches for Los Angeles's center and finds a city that "breaks itself down, builds itself up again, displaces and regroups itself" and where "freedom of movement" is a basic premise of life. Historian Philip Ethington documents the city's changing character in both
text and images, urban studies professor Dana Cuff exposes the demise of once-thriving urban neighborhoods to make way for Modernist housing projects, and anthropologist Susan A. Phillips invites us on a personal journey into "the projects" to meet gang members and their families today. Artist
Robbert Flick offers a sixteen-page, full-color photo-essay that takes us on a "drive-by" along Alameda Avenue, architectural historian Thomas S. Hines traces Frank Lloyd Wright's influence on the life and career of photographer Edmund Teske, and film historian Robert L. Carringer examines Los
Angeles as a setting for Hollywood feature films.

Book Description
"New Living" (Das Neue Wohnen) was the title of an exeptional architectural propaganda film created in 1930 by German avant-garde artist and filmmaker Hans Richter. It showcased exemplary modernist buildings and furniture--some of which were on view shortly after in the prestigious exhibition "The International Style"--and contrasted them with the impractical, unhygienic living spaces that were the norm. Visually diverse and full of experimental montage techniques, "New Living" pioneered a radical method of portraying architecture on celluloid.

Customer Reviews:
Good Game, But Doesn't Warrant a Strategy Guide.......2004-09-12
Due to the limited moves of the monsters in this game, it doesn't warrant a strategy guide. A book devoted to this title is true overkill. Like most games, GDAM seems daunting the first few attempts, but there is one major secret to the game that gets you 1/2 way there: "don't walk, run". Literally. Always keep the left button, on the front of the controler - the blue-grey one that's for your index finger, as you move ([Gamecube], refer to maual for X-box). That makes your monster run. Never let it go. Ta da.
This Book is as big as Godzilla!.......2003-03-02
This book rocks and so does the game but I sure wish Space Godzilla and Biolantte were in the game but It does'nt matter!

Where's Space Godzilla, Biollante?.......2002-11-10
Don't get me wrong, the book is very useful and a good companion to an already great game, but where are the great monsters. I hope when Atari makes the sequel they add a few more monsters to the lineup, SpaceGodzilla and Biollante are my top choices. Other than that the book and the game get a solid 5 stars.

Customer Reviews:
Sorry end to a good series.......2007-03-26
I liked the first two parts of this--the story was tight, the action was fun and there were careful, subtle threads of mystery and romance woven through. I can't explain this last volume though. It sets up some intriguing stuff but gradually loses its momentum and then simply ends in the middle of the story. There's no resolution for the threads that are set up here, and many of the threads from earlier novels remain dangling as well. The much-hyped "cliffhanger ending" is there alright, but it's never resolved or paid off. To add insult to injury, there *are* follow up pages to this unresolved story, but they tell a totally unrelated short story which reads like a bad fanfic.
Very disappointing. A tight, fun series for the most part, but it just loses its focus for no apparent reason and tails off with a whimper.
Good series.......2005-04-12
I really liked this redition of G-Force. The artwork was top notch and the story line were pretty good, maybe a bit too many detours for a supposed one off. I'm not sure how biased I am since this was a childhood favorite of mine.
Hopefully they continue the story soon. You shouldn't leave a cliffhanger like that unless you're pretty sure it will coninue.
Excellent Story.......2005-03-16
This was a shocking and very entertaining ending. I hope this series is picked up again, because I have to read more. What a cliffhanger. EXCELLENT!!!
Conclusion? What conclusion?.......2005-02-26
The ending totally ruined it for me. Well, I won't say "ending" as much as "the place where they stopped," because despite calling it a gripping conclusion, nothing was concluded. Not only did they not wrap up the plot, but they added in a cliffhanger. Jason's vanished after a fight with Mark that came out of thin air. Some dark figure in a G-Force costume is now claiming to be loyal to Zoltar. We had a page or two of the janitor who intimates that he's Keyop's cell donor for cloning. But no conclusion.
Note to the writers: a conclusion means you wrap up the story, not that you stop it as if it ran into a wall at a hundred miles per hour.
The prior storyline wraps up in issue 10, but then there are two extra tacked-on issues, which honestly didn't need to be there. If they'd just stopped without those two final issues, it would be okay. Instead I looked at all the pages left to turn and thought, "What on earth are they going to fill it with?" The answer? Nothing. They filled it with nothing.
The "Jason" one-shot was rather confusing without reference to the original series, and the "Mark" one left me yawning. After reading this, I'm not wondering why they canned this comic. Save your money. Buy the DVDs of the original series.

Book Description
Description: Destroy All Monsters started out as an anti-rock band: four midwestern art students - Jim Shaw, Mike Kelley, Cary Loren, and Niagara - with a mission to subvert the airwaves. Between 1975 and 1979, they produced six issues of DAM Magazine, a barrage of Kelley's perverse cartoons, Shaw and Loren's wild Xeroxed collages, and shots of the band; Niagara did a lot of the cover designs, and everything was crudely printed on cheap paper. "The images that drove us were the strange combinations of film noir, monster movies, psychedelia, thrift-shop values, and the relentless anarchy of an over-stimulated pop culture", recalls Cary Loren. This compilation is the definitive DAM document: hundreds of drawings, photos, Xeroxed artwork, reviews, profiles, and personal manifestos - plus a flexi-record bound into the book.
