The Nantucket Restaurants Cookbook is exactly that, a collection of menus from a whole host of restaurants on Nantucket Island. And for such a small island, Nantucket has a lot to offer the hungry gourmet. Samara Farber Mormar, a former chef, is a Nantucket resident and loves everything about the island. Her coauthor, Melissa Clark, is a cookbook writer and columnist for The New York Times. Together they interviewed the chefs and owners of 18 Nantucket restaurants and wrote a chapter on each which includes a little history, a little personality, some local color, and a showstopping menu.

Black-Eyed Susan's doesn't advertise, take reservations, or publish a phone number, but there's always a line out the door. With beautiful, summery dishes such as their Tuna Tartare with Cucumbers and Sriracha Aioli and Lemon Tart with Spring Strawberry Sorbet, it's no wonder. You'd expect The Boarding House to serve simple food, but you'd be wrong. Angela and Seth Raynor met as culinary students, and while he was cooking French on Nantucket at the Chanticleer, she was cooking in France. Today, their love for all things French flavors their "new American" cuisine in dishes such as the refreshing Cold Tomato Infusion with Lobster. The Club Car is revered for its food and service far beyond the island's shores. Their Grilled Veal Medallions with Fresh Horseradish Cream and Poached Oysters is more than worth the time it takes to prepare. While you can't enjoy the setting of The Galley on Cliffside Beach--"smack dab on the beach"--without going there, Goat-Cheese-Stuffed Squash Blossoms with Grilled Onion and Organic Tomato Vinaigrette and Rosewater Angel Food Cake with Blackberries and Lemon Verbena Syrup help to explain the entrancing serenity of the island described by every one of these chefs. Only a handful of the chefs are Nantucket natives; most of them migrated to the island, or happened upon it. But once there, they fell in love with it and stayed. The result is a plethora of fine dining establishments, and although many are only open during the summer season, much of their business is repeat.

So if you always imagined Nantucket cuisine as fried clams on the beach, think again. "Sophisticated food and warm hospitality" is the order of the day. Come and meet the generous food community from Nantucket, and follow their lead--maybe all that island serenity comes just as much from painted plates of Banana Bread French Toast with Bananas Foster and Crème Fraîche as it does from the windswept dunes and the sapphire sea. --Leora Y. Bloom

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful picture of the Nantucket Restaurant Scene.......2001-05-16

Though I've never been to Nantucket, this book absolutely makes me want to go, the next time I'm on the East Coast. In the meantime, I can flip through this gorgeous book and dream. The photography is alluring and recipes so inventive and interesting. Some of them seem a little cheffy, but for the most part they look easy enough to make for a summer dinner party. Plus, the profiles of the restaurantuers make me want to try their recipes! It makes a great gift.

Visitors to Nantucket usually return home with glowing food memories. Maybe the sea air livens appetites, but more likely it's the good Yankee cooking. Susan Simon's The Nantucket Holiday Table offers 75 recipes interlarded with personal stories, historical lore, and interesting asides such as "What's It Like in the Wintertime?" Rooted in old New England culinary tradition, the recipes also take a modern approach. Readers should enjoy making Almond French Toast with Caramelized Applesauce, Roasted Squash Risotto, and Grilled Turkey with Corn Bread and Oyster Stuffing, among Simon's many savory dishes.

Arranged mainly by courses, the book also features chapters on holiday breakfasts, cocktail parties, and food gifts. Typically delightful recipes from these include Jimmy Gross's Christmas Day Crêpes, Root Vegetable Chips, and Green Tomato Preserves. Underscoring the island's diverse gastronomic character, Simon also presents cross-ethnic recipes such as Sweet Potato and Chorizo Frittata Squares, Caldo Verde, and Nantucket-Cuban-Connection Sandwich. Dessert formulas aren't neglected and include Cranberry Shortcakes, Pumpkin Caramel Pudding, and Spirited Gingerbread with Ginger Ice Cream. With 70 color illustrations, the book is both a useful source for special-occasion and everyday dishes and a tour of a deeply alluring American landscape. --Arthur Boehm

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Cheesecake Gone Terribly Wrong.......2003-01-28

This book is certainly beautiful, but the one recipe I chose to make was a disaster! I made the Cranberry Beach-Plum Cheesecake on page 129 which calls for cream cheese, ricotta, sour cream, and ten eggs, but NO sugar! This was not a savory cheesecake, but a DESSERT, and the tart cranberry topping and graham cracker crust could not compensate for the blandness of straight cheese and eggs, flavored only with vanilla. It was so startling and unexpected that my friend actually spit it out.
Was this an error in proof reading, or simply a bad recipe? It certainly makes me hesitant to try another recipe from this book.

4 out of 5 stars Cozy and Comfortable.......2000-11-03

The book is a wonderful read just on its own. Susan Simon lends her own stories to some of the recipes. The recipes are wonderul and not hard. I felt very comfortable reading the book and anticipating the upcoming Holiday season.

Book Description

Nantucket, a thirteen-mile-long island off the coast of Massachusetts, is more than a place-- it's a state of mind. Nantucket Style is a handsome and thorough presentation of the unique atmosphere of the historic New England island. Classic American architecture, interiors, arts and crafts, gardens, and cuisine, within an environment offering unsurpassed natural beauty, contribute to the special quality of life on Nantucket island.

Nantucket Style takes the reader on an insider's tour of over twenty-five local residences. The houses range from the exquisitely preserved eighteenth-century mansions that line Main Street to the charmingly rustic cottages that are a hallmark of towns by the sea.

Quiet, relaxed, and unspoiled, this former whaling port is a haven for artists and creative individuals whose approach to life results in striking and inviting interiors. Residents find their own personal styles within the context of the traditional New England buildings that dot the island landscape. Their design solutions are adaptable and appropriate for use by anyone whose home is a preserve of fine living.

2 out of 5 stars Black and White Photos! .......2006-07-09

Wonderful book, except after the initial 24 pages of landscape pictures, half the photographs were in black and white. The ones in color were beautiful. My opinion, if you're going to do a decorating book, do it in color photography, or just make the book smaller. It was such a disappointment to turn the page and see a B&W interior photo of a lovely home, but have no idea of the color of the fabrics, carpet, walls, decoration. You just felt, well, deprived, and there were so many of these B&W pages. A decorating books should make you feel full of possibilities of what you can create and design. Save black and white photos for Time & Life pictures or Ansel Adams where they are terrific, not in a decorating book.

Susan Simon has lived in Europe, New York City, and on Nantucket, a windswept island off the New England coast. In The Nantucket Table she talks about the island, shares stories of her travels elsewhere, and presents recipes that weave flavors from Italy and beyond together with bluefish, cranberries, and other local island ingredients. Initially, agriculture and fishing supported life on Nantucket. During the 19th century, whaling drew away the island's men while creating one of the wealthiest ports in the world. When whaling declined, Nantucket residents settled back into scalloping and local farming. Meanwhile, this island also developed into a world famous summer resort.

Simon's recipes are mostly easy, summery dishes based on fresh vegetables, ripe fruits, and seafood, all combined with clear flavors. Her love for Italy shows in glowing Carrot Crostini, or Spaghetti with Fresh Tomato Sauce, or White Beans and Roasted Broccoli. She features seasonal produce in Gingery Lime-Blackberry Tart, and more local dishes, too. Anyone with a garden, access to a farmstand, and good, fresh fish can enjoy the sensuous, sunny food in The Nantucket Table. This quasi coffee-table book is also filled with tempting food photos and Tom Eckerle's wonderful pictures of bright Nantucket days.

Book Description

A Nantucket summer is sunny, salty days at the beach, ocean views, sea breezes, and casual feasts with friends and family. Susan Simon's love of Nantucket, with its picket fences and sandy lanes, its baked clams, lobsters, and heavenly chowders, shines through on every page of The Nantucket Table. Her recipes are clear, easy, fresh, and delicious, while Tom Eckerle's photographs complete the picture of the sweetest, laziest season on the island. Though the book features the specialties of Nantucket, these are not unusual ingredients: Susan Simon wants you to enjoy simple food at its seasonal peak. If you can find a farmer's market and a fresh fish shop, there's no reason why you can't create that special taste of Nantucket, wherever you happen to live.

John Lennon (who turned up to West's birthday party dressed as Zorro), the Stones, Keith Moon, the Allman Brothers and Deep Purple are just a few of the luminaries that scatter the pages of this romp through the years when no-nonsense rock 'n roll ruled the planet.

              Book Description

The art of painting on silk is fascinating but many people who would like to explore this medium lack the confidence to create their own designs. This book has been specifically written to overcome this reluctance. The beginner will find a comprehensive introduction to the basis of technical and artistic construction, while the more experienced devotee will be inspired by the examples featured in this book, covering photographs from nature to work by by well-known artists.

              Customer Reviews:

              4 out of 5 stars Wonderful images & photography.......2007-05-03

Silk painting seems so do-able after reading this book. The author starts by discussing tools and supplies needed and HOW they are used. Continuing into basics, "Designing from Nature" is covered, with discussion on composition, contrasts, applied embillishments, color composition, and then finding and translating designs. To close out the book, she discusses, "Motifs from Nature", using separate categories, the following are highlighted individually: 1) Rocks, stones and earth; 2) Water and clouds; 3) Trees; 4) Blossom and fruit; and 5) Animals. In each section, a number of photos are included to use as inspiration for your own work. The author includes not only her own work, but that of many other artists, creating a very broad swipe of exampled paintings. My personal favorite of the various techniques is the Trees section and the use of salt, wax and/or alcohol for special effects for various varieties. All in all, a wonderful book on silk painting.

The only way to safely express the feelings Bill Clinton's conduct produces is the editorial cartoon. The man just defies words. So this was a vintage year for cartoonists - and it shows. The cartoons in this book are just great. They canalise wrath into laughter, but also - on social issues - create the awareness that some matters are too serious to be laughed at.

A very good reason to buy this book: it features some of my own work. Really, this is reason enough to buy this excellent volume. Trust me.

5 out of 5 stars Editorial cartoonists celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall.......2003-03-14

I really like editorial cartoons, whether they are current ones on the editorial pages of a newspaper or old ones in history books. But for the most part we are talking about satirical barbs at the high and mighty. Still, there are times when editorial cartoonists get to actually celebrate something and the breath-taking collapse of the Berlin Wall and of communist governments in Eastern Europe provided that creative opportunity: e.g., the cover shot by Clyde Wells of the "Augusta Chronicle" showing two figures armed with the hammer and sickle of the Soviet Union to tear down the Berlin Wall. Add to this the demands for basic freedoms in both China and the Soviet Union and 1989 became on of the most memorable non-election years of modern times.

"Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year: 1990 Edition" has the work of 163 different cartoonists from the United States and Canada. In addition to the quickening disintegration of the Soviet bloc, there was the first year in office for the "kindler and gentler" Bush Administration, the showdown was Panamanian strongman Manuel Noriega, and Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini putting author Salman Rushdie under a sentence of death for his book "The Satanic Verses." For scandals there was the Savings & Loan in Congress, the trial of Oliver North in the Iran-Contra scandal, the rejection of the nomination of former Texas Senator John Tower for secretary and defense, and the conviction of Leona Helmsley on tax evasion. Mother Nature added Hurricane Hugo qne an earthquake in the San Francisco Bay area during the World Series, while humans added insult to injury with the "Exxon Valdez" oil spill. There is a section we would find quite timely today dealing with Pete Rose being banned by baseball for betting on sports. Some things remain constant: there are always editorial cartoons about the economy and problems in the Middle East. It is amazing to me how vividly these editorial cartoons bring back these various issues. Give me a choice between an editorial cartoon and a photograph to preserve a moment in history, and I will usually take the latter.

5 out of 5 stars Editorial Cartoons about Desert Storm and other 1991 events.......2003-02-24

In American history textbooks or juvenile biographies of political figures, I always like to see editorial cartoons. From Thomas Nast to Bill Mauldin and Herb Block to Jeff MacNelly, a great editorial cartoon can capture the politics of a moment better than any photograph could ever do. "Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year: 1992 Edition" covers the events of 1991, including operation Desert Storm. On the prelude of the next Gulf War it is interesting, to say the least, to go back and see what was being drawn back then.

Beyond the heroism of Desert Storm 1991 saw the disintegration of the Soviet Union (see cover), the economic recession, the Bush White House, and the rising figures of the Democratic campaign trail (no Bill Clinton but lots of Mario Cuomo at this point). Other targets include the Senate confirmation hearing of Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas, the David Duke campaign in Louisiana, peace prospects in the Middle East, the U.S. Congress bouncing checks, the plight of the poor and the homeless, and the plagues of crime and drugs. There are 345 editorial cartoons by more than 180 of the leading cartoonists in both the United States and Canada represent the complete political spectrum fomr the liberal left to the conservative right, along with the middle of the bird. The result is a fascinating walk down memory lane regarding what we thought about Saddam Hussein invading Kuwait, Ted Kennedy's reputation for drinking and womanizing, and Oliver North getting his conviction overturned, as well as remembering the death of Dr. Suess and the beating of Rodney King.

"Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year: 1992 Edition" was compiled and edited by Charles Brooks, former president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists. The book opens with the Award-Winning Cartoons from 1991 for the Pulitzer Prize (Jim Borgman, "Cincinnati Enquirer"), National Headliners Club Award (Borgman), National Society of Professional Journalists Award (Jeff MacNelly, "Chicago Tribune"), Fischetti Award (Mike Keefe, "Denver Post"), and National Newspaper Award/Canada (Roy Peterson, "Vancouver Sun"). This particular volume is over a decade old, but is worth checking out just to see how much (and how little) has changed in terms of war in the Middle East, Saddam Hussein, and a President Bush leading the nation to war.

                    Book Description

Events of 1988 once again provided a bonanza for editorial cartoonists everywhere. The presidential campaigns led the news, while the Persian Gulf war, continued unrest in Israel, Mikhail Gorbachev's campaign for reform in the Soviet Union, the Geneva summit meeting, and the growing threat of AIDS also provided inspiration for the 329 cartoons in this volume.

For seventeen years the Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year series has been an important and entertaining review of the year's events. In this edition, more than 160 cartoonists express a variety of incisive views on a broad range of topics. Sometimes hilarious, sometimes poignant, the cartoons in this volume provide a pictorial history of 1988.

5 out of 5 stars Will editorial cartoons stick to a Teflon President? (No).......2003-05-29

When tripping down memory lane by flipping through the pages of "Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year, 1988," or any of its companion volumes in this series, what stands out the most are not the constant topics such as Congress getting nothing done, violence in the Middle East, concerns about the economy and defense spending, but the topics that are specific to 1987. That was the year of the doomed nomination of Robert Bork to the U.S. Supreme Court and a players strike in the NFL, a great opportunity for editorial cartoonists to declare a plague on both houses. Then there was the PTL scandal that brought down Jim Bakker and his wife Tammy Faye Bakker, a woman born to end up in editorial cartoons. Often, I find some of my favorite cartoons have to do with well-known personalities who died during the year: Jim Borgman has Fred Astaire dancing on the ceiling in the reception room in heaven and Bob Englehart drew the set from "The Honeymooners" with the figure of Alice weeping over the death of Jackie Gleason.

1987 was a good year for award-winning cartoonists, with Mike Peters picking up the National Headliners Club Award for his Iran-Contra action figures, Berke Breathed shaking the earth by winning the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for "Bloom County," and Dick Locher earning the Fischetti Award for a cartoon of Reagan as Karnak ("The answer is: 'I Don't Know!' Now, what's the question?"). The Iran-Contra hearings provided lots of fodder for satire, with Marine Lt. Col. Oliver North suddenly becoming a national figure, along with National Security Advisor John Poindexter. Meanwhile, Ronald Reagan continued along with his "Teflon Presidency" while over on the Democratic side potential candidates Gary Hart and Joe Biden saw their campaigns self-destruct. You look over all the stupid things politicians were doing and no wonder the American public is jaded about scandals involving politicians. Then there was the controversy over promoting condoms as a way of reducing the spread of AIDS, just one of a dozen topics that cuts both ways in inflaming the passions of the American public. Still, all thing considered 1987 was a very good year for the pens dipped in venom by the nation's editorial cartoonists.
