The Nantucket Restaurants Cookbook is exactly that, a collection of menus from a whole host of restaurants on Nantucket Island. And for such a small island, Nantucket has a lot to offer the hungry gourmet. Samara Farber Mormar, a former chef, is a Nantucket resident and loves everything about the island. Her coauthor, Melissa Clark, is a cookbook writer and columnist for The New York Times. Together they interviewed the chefs and owners of 18 Nantucket restaurants and wrote a chapter on each which includes a little history, a little personality, some local color, and a showstopping menu.Black-Eyed Susan's doesn't advertise, take reservations, or publish a phone number, but there's always a line out the door. With beautiful, summery dishes such as their Tuna Tartare with Cucumbers and Sriracha Aioli and Lemon Tart with Spring Strawberry Sorbet, it's no wonder. You'd expect The Boarding House to serve simple food, but you'd be wrong. Angela and Seth Raynor met as culinary students, and while he was cooking French on Nantucket at the Chanticleer, she was cooking in France. Today, their love for all things French flavors their "new American" cuisine in dishes such as the refreshing Cold Tomato Infusion with Lobster. The Club Car is revered for its food and service far beyond the island's shores. Their Grilled Veal Medallions with Fresh Horseradish Cream and Poached Oysters is more than worth the time it takes to prepare. While you can't enjoy the setting of The Galley on Cliffside Beach--"smack dab on the beach"--without going there, Goat-Cheese-Stuffed Squash Blossoms with Grilled Onion and Organic Tomato Vinaigrette and Rosewater Angel Food Cake with Blackberries and Lemon Verbena Syrup help to explain the entrancing serenity of the island described by every one of these chefs. Only a handful of the chefs are Nantucket natives; most of them migrated to the island, or happened upon it. But once there, they fell in love with it and stayed. The result is a plethora of fine dining establishments, and although many are only open during the summer season, much of their business is repeat.
So if you always imagined Nantucket cuisine as fried clams on the beach, think again. "Sophisticated food and warm hospitality" is the order of the day. Come and meet the generous food community from Nantucket, and follow their lead--maybe all that island serenity comes just as much from painted plates of Banana Bread French Toast with Bananas Foster and Crème Fraîche as it does from the windswept dunes and the sapphire sea. --Leora Y. Bloom

Susan Simon has lived in Europe, New York City, and on Nantucket, a windswept island off the New England coast. In The Nantucket Table she talks about the island, shares stories of her travels elsewhere, and presents recipes that weave flavors from Italy and beyond together with bluefish, cranberries, and other local island ingredients. Initially, agriculture and fishing supported life on Nantucket. During the 19th century, whaling drew away the island's men while creating one of the wealthiest ports in the world. When whaling declined, Nantucket residents settled back into scalloping and local farming. Meanwhile, this island also developed into a world famous summer resort.Simon's recipes are mostly easy, summery dishes based on fresh vegetables, ripe fruits, and seafood, all combined with clear flavors. Her love for Italy shows in glowing Carrot Crostini, or Spaghetti with Fresh Tomato Sauce, or White Beans and Roasted Broccoli. She features seasonal produce in Gingery Lime-Blackberry Tart, and more local dishes, too. Anyone with a garden, access to a farmstand, and good, fresh fish can enjoy the sensuous, sunny food in The Nantucket Table. This quasi coffee-table book is also filled with tempting food photos and Tom Eckerle's wonderful pictures of bright Nantucket days.
Book Description
A Nantucket summer is sunny, salty days at the beach, ocean views, sea breezes, and casual feasts with friends and family. Susan Simon's love of Nantucket, with its picket fences and sandy lanes, its baked clams, lobsters, and heavenly chowders, shines through on every page of The Nantucket Table. Her recipes are clear, easy, fresh, and delicious, while Tom Eckerle's photographs complete the picture of the sweetest, laziest season on the island. Though the book features the specialties of Nantucket, these are not unusual ingredients: Susan Simon wants you to enjoy simple food at its seasonal peak. If you can find a farmer's market and a fresh fish shop, there's no reason why you can't create that special taste of Nantucket, wherever you happen to live.Customer Reviews:

Editorial cartoonists celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall.......2003-03-14
"Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year: 1990 Edition" has the work of 163 different cartoonists from the United States and Canada. In addition to the quickening disintegration of the Soviet bloc, there was the first year in office for the "kindler and gentler" Bush Administration, the showdown was Panamanian strongman Manuel Noriega, and Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini putting author Salman Rushdie under a sentence of death for his book "The Satanic Verses." For scandals there was the Savings & Loan in Congress, the trial of Oliver North in the Iran-Contra scandal, the rejection of the nomination of former Texas Senator John Tower for secretary and defense, and the conviction of Leona Helmsley on tax evasion. Mother Nature added Hurricane Hugo qne an earthquake in the San Francisco Bay area during the World Series, while humans added insult to injury with the "Exxon Valdez" oil spill. There is a section we would find quite timely today dealing with Pete Rose being banned by baseball for betting on sports. Some things remain constant: there are always editorial cartoons about the economy and problems in the Middle East. It is amazing to me how vividly these editorial cartoons bring back these various issues. Give me a choice between an editorial cartoon and a photograph to preserve a moment in history, and I will usually take the latter.

Editorial Cartoons about Desert Storm and other 1991 events.......2003-02-24
Beyond the heroism of Desert Storm 1991 saw the disintegration of the Soviet Union (see cover), the economic recession, the Bush White House, and the rising figures of the Democratic campaign trail (no Bill Clinton but lots of Mario Cuomo at this point). Other targets include the Senate confirmation hearing of Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas, the David Duke campaign in Louisiana, peace prospects in the Middle East, the U.S. Congress bouncing checks, the plight of the poor and the homeless, and the plagues of crime and drugs. There are 345 editorial cartoons by more than 180 of the leading cartoonists in both the United States and Canada represent the complete political spectrum fomr the liberal left to the conservative right, along with the middle of the bird. The result is a fascinating walk down memory lane regarding what we thought about Saddam Hussein invading Kuwait, Ted Kennedy's reputation for drinking and womanizing, and Oliver North getting his conviction overturned, as well as remembering the death of Dr. Suess and the beating of Rodney King.
"Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year: 1992 Edition" was compiled and edited by Charles Brooks, former president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists. The book opens with the Award-Winning Cartoons from 1991 for the Pulitzer Prize (Jim Borgman, "Cincinnati Enquirer"), National Headliners Club Award (Borgman), National Society of Professional Journalists Award (Jeff MacNelly, "Chicago Tribune"), Fischetti Award (Mike Keefe, "Denver Post"), and National Newspaper Award/Canada (Roy Peterson, "Vancouver Sun"). This particular volume is over a decade old, but is worth checking out just to see how much (and how little) has changed in terms of war in the Middle East, Saddam Hussein, and a President Bush leading the nation to war.

Book Description
Events of 1988 once again provided a bonanza for editorial cartoonists everywhere. The presidential campaigns led the news, while the Persian Gulf war, continued unrest in Israel, Mikhail Gorbachev's campaign for reform in the Soviet Union, the Geneva summit meeting, and the growing threat of AIDS also provided inspiration for the 329 cartoons in this volume. For seventeen years the Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year series has been an important and entertaining review of the year's events. In this edition, more than 160 cartoonists express a variety of incisive views on a broad range of topics. Sometimes hilarious, sometimes poignant, the cartoons in this volume provide a pictorial history of 1988.

Will editorial cartoons stick to a Teflon President? (No).......2003-05-29
1987 was a good year for award-winning cartoonists, with Mike Peters picking up the National Headliners Club Award for his Iran-Contra action figures, Berke Breathed shaking the earth by winning the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for "Bloom County," and Dick Locher earning the Fischetti Award for a cartoon of Reagan as Karnak ("The answer is: 'I Don't Know!' Now, what's the question?"). The Iran-Contra hearings provided lots of fodder for satire, with Marine Lt. Col. Oliver North suddenly becoming a national figure, along with National Security Advisor John Poindexter. Meanwhile, Ronald Reagan continued along with his "Teflon Presidency" while over on the Democratic side potential candidates Gary Hart and Joe Biden saw their campaigns self-destruct. You look over all the stupid things politicians were doing and no wonder the American public is jaded about scandals involving politicians. Then there was the controversy over promoting condoms as a way of reducing the spread of AIDS, just one of a dozen topics that cuts both ways in inflaming the passions of the American public. Still, all thing considered 1987 was a very good year for the pens dipped in venom by the nation's editorial cartoonists.
