Book Description

Compared to Stephen Covey and Tony Robbins as a visionary thinker, Dan Sullivan brings practical, powerful new approaches to success in life and business. "The Laws of Lifetime Growth outlines ten "laws" that give readers an internal framework for taking charge of their future. All it takes to use each of these laws is a slight shift in thinking, which anyone -- regardless of age, environment, or stage in life -- can instantly accomplish. Based on Sullivan's years of coaching in which he discovered what motivates people and unlocks their greatest abilities, "The Laws of Lifetime Growth explains how to use such timeless wisdom as "Always make your confidence greater than your comfort" and "Always make your contribution bigger than your reward." Sullivan's laws, startling in their simplicity, show readers how to stay focused and firm so that they can continually grow in all areas of life.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book for Anyone.......2007-09-24

I had to read this book for a school assignment. However, I found the book to be quite helpful and applicable to life, both professional and personal. The laws are pretty straightforward (always make your questions greater than your answers, etc.), but they bring up some intersting stories and applications of these laws and how to apply the laws to life. I'll probably read this again more thoroughly after I write the paper on it.

4 out of 5 stars Powerful principles explained superficially.......2007-08-29

Personal growth is very important to me so I was naturally attracted to the title "The Laws of Lifetime Growth: Always Make Your Future Bigger than Your Past". The book is a very quick read and although some of the ideas in the book may seem like rehashed platitudes to the cynical reader, I always read with the idea of reaffirming information and learning new ways to express old ideas. How else can one read a personal development book, after all most of the information has been written about before and very few ideas are original. The delivery, however, can make the difference. This book's ideas are powerful, even though the examples lack power, if one practices the principles that are referred to as laws in this book, one will definitely continue the process of growth that is vitally important for a happy, significant life. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Ten potent laws of personal growth.......2007-04-16

Dan Sullivan and Catherine Nomura address the need for continuous personal growth, and show you how to lead a more fulfilling personal and work life. They provide encouragement, buttressed by personal stories about people who have faced the challenges or made the personal discoveries described in each chapter. The authors tell you how to live life with an inquiring mind and a desire to serve others. They offer 10 "laws" you can use to measure your success by assessing the ways you benefit others. If you need help making this constant journey at your own speed, slip this small book into your briefcase and consult it along the way. We recommend this quick read to stimulate your desire to accomplish great things.

5 out of 5 stars Clarity of Vision and Storytelling used adeptly to illuminate Life Lessons .......2007-03-26

Each of the laws in this book invoked a feeling of dejavu for me, and therein lies its value - it was as if somewhere deep within myself I already knew the wisdom that was being offered, but the book shone a light on this tacit knowledge, and in so-doing made it more accessible, meaningful, and applicable.

Each short chapter left me with an "ah - of course" feeling. For, example, chapter one gave a keen sense of how past success can actually become a limit to future growth if one does not "Always make your future bigger than your past," but that by assessing your past achievements and asking "How can I use my past to expand my future horisons in creative ways," you can ensure a lifetime of fulfilment in personal and professional growth.

Somethimes it is not WHAT is said that offers the greatest insight, but HOW it is presented. The many eureka moments I experienced while reading Dan Sullivan and Catherine Nomura's "Laws of Lifetime Growth," were, I believe, mainly due to the clear and memorable way in which the ideas were presented. The chapter titles serve as a good memory aid for keeping the lessons readily accessible in one's mind. The stories of how these lessons were applied by individuals, add a personal touch that deepens insight and makes the lessons even more memorable. Finally, the summary paragraphs that introduce each chapter can be re-read in a few minutes as a revision of the key concepts.

The book is a short easy read, and is ideal for reading on an aeroplane trip as I did. Its value is well worth the small investment in time and money. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Growing happy: How to exercise your attitude and love your life and work........2007-02-11

It would be a great thing to sell at airports for business and other travelers. It's digestible in one or two flights and it's chock-full of inspiring thoughts. And that would be enough but this book goes further and offers practical steps for implementing the inspiration! I felt so "I can do this!" after reading it, I thought I'd keep the book on my shelf for future shots in the arm.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great resource from a legend.......2007-09-08

A great read for anyone who is ready to make the jump from art school to working clients. Scher goes into excellent detail about working with illustrators, the structure (and politics) of agency work, her strategies/approach to design. She also shares good insight on how to work most effectively with clients who may not know a whole lot about design. I found this very practical, and a very easy read. I am also a big fan of her work, which spans several decades.

5 out of 5 stars Vunderbar.......2004-10-26

Paul Scher hit me. No, literally. On a student tour of the Koppel/Scher offices, I was standing by a closet--Paula flung the door open and I provided the rubber stop. Though it's been a struggle, the last 12 years have softened my emotional pain. Make It Bigger provided some very necessary closure.
Also, trust whatever Randy Silverman (a previous reviewer) says about anything, especially anything concerning design. Frighteningly insightful.

4 out of 5 stars Scher Brilliance!.......2004-01-20

I have to say I'm not a big "fan" of Paula Scher's visual style, it's far too "horsey" and "big-boned" for my taste, but I am a fan of what she has to say about the design profession and her experience in it.

This book is an excellent reference/story book on the frustrations of dealing with clients (which are many, as I can relate) who have poor taste or are just clueless. I agree with everything Paula says here and enjoyed the grain of salt with all that's said. I can feel the frustration and exasperation Paula speaks of as anyone worth their blood has designed something great, only to have a client with tunnel vision ruin it. Sigh.

Any serious designer should read this book, or already has. I would have no problem calling anyone who hasn't read it a poseur in this profession!

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Those Who Need to Understand Working with Clients.......2003-03-18

Too often designers see their own result(s) and design solutions without the knowledge of the 'client process' . . . a truly remarkable reality in this business. ALL design students should be made aware of this aspect of the profession, possibly even before seriously considering if one wants to be a designer. There is so much more to it than having an 'AHA' on one's own. Ms. Scher has presented this in a manner both pictorially and honestly with examples and explanations . . . and, of course, with much experience in the real world of design (which must also include some humor). I have been a designer for thirty years and would recommend this as part of required reading from the start for future "wannabes" and for all of us who need that reassurance that this is indeed how it works.

5 out of 5 stars Make it Bigger is Best.......2002-12-11

Many kudos to Paula Scher on her wonderful new book, Make It Bigger. Not being a designer myself, I am especially appreciative of Make It Bigger's informative descriptions of the negotiation process that goes on between the designer and the client. It helped put into perspective for me that invisible "something" that exists when a breakthrough piece of graphic art emerges. Besides the creative, visual flash of a challenging image, each graphic art object that survives the editorial process gives off an optimism that must be something akin to those first aviators who believed in flight, despite gravity and the conventions of rational wisdom.

Make it Bigger also represents (to the best of my knowledge) the first publishers' edition binding to be produced as a tight back, breaking a run of hollow-back edition bindings dating back to the inception of the genre, c.1820. While I'm sure most folks will be impressed with the edge printing (which is very slick), and the wonderful layout, the book's physical structure (which is something akin to a mechanized Bradel binding) breaks all kinds of ground. (I would have loved to have seen the discussions that must gone on between the author and the binder!).

In addition to its unique packaging and stunning visual presentation, Make It Bigger is the most entertaining work on graphic art I've ever read. Scher's writing style is honest, accessible, and absolutely absorbing, as are her candor, her humor, and most of all her precocious creativity. I cannot say enough to convey my sincere admiration for this wonderful book.

                  Book Description

Signs and Relics is an exploration of the world from a photographer's point of view--in this case, noted Village Voice photographer Sylvia Plachy. Her engaging images--some light and humorous, some somber--show particular people and places at precise moments of synchronicity. Plachy draws telling metaphors from the photographs, which are grouped in 19 thematic sections. "Sit," for example, shows images ranging from a wood chair in a Parisian window to a woman perched in a tree to Barbie atop a pair of high-heeled legs.

Fragments of dreams and memories coexist with images from the streets of the world and photographs of people, from Plachy's family to viewers at an art exhibition. The text suggests the ties that draw the views together and simultaneously offers insights into the photographer's personal philosophy. The various sections form a mosaic in which the pieces refer to each other and to the notion that the present is rooted in the past and that any view of the world--photographic or theoretical--is part of an unseen ensemble.

                  3 out of 5 stars Good title.......2001-08-08

Photography books are expensive enough as it is, and the hardback makes 'Signs & Relics' an over-priced waste of money. It is grossly misleading for amazon, as well as the official Wenders website, to advertise this book as a Plachy and Wenders production. Wenders' only contribution is the foreword which consists about 200 words, a foreword in which he even admits that he only bought the book because he liked the title.

5 out of 5 stars The Poetry of Photography.......2000-04-02

A friend sent me this book as soon as it was published, so impressed was she by the honesty of its photographic vocabulary. She was right. I am now buying more copies as gifts to spread the word. As a writer and photographer interested in the philosophy of photography, I have been aware of Planchy's work for some time but nothing of hers I had seen before quite prepared me for this. There is really nothing to compare it with. It is what everyone interested in photography needs to know. Gone is any traditional hankering after "good" photography. I have often thought that photography has more in common with theatre than painting and Planchy shows it. In place of the artistic image is a celebration of people and things. She loves her subjects and she loves photography and this comes through in every image. She teaches us, in a joyous voice tinged with sadness and relieved by humour, that there are different ways of perceiving things. After this, a road will never seem the same again, nor something as simple as a chair. In sharing her vision Planchy takes us unwittingly back to the ancients and their first tentative attempts to answer questions about being and knowing. Photography has a pertinent role here which Planchy's work illustrates and, in doing so, provides proof that photography - drawing or dancing with light? - indeed has a place in the fast-forward future.

                    Book Description

Why shouldn't young men get the same chance that girls have of ruining their lives in the pursuit of unattainable standards of beauty? Though mocked by classmates and subject to stares in the streets, Masao vows to remain faithful to his makeovers — determined to become the man hairdressers, estheticians, and fashion magazine editors only dream that women dream of!

                    3 out of 5 stars FINALLY, I GET RESPECT.......2005-07-18

Well, we're finally down to the last volume of Flowers & Bees and the question is, has Komatsu learned anything? Sakura is now his girlfriend, but starting a relationship is only half the battle! How do you keep the person interested without smothering them, without pandering to their every wish? How do you act around them? These are all questions Komatsu will have to answer simply because he's never had a real girlfriend. He's still trying to play it cool by dyeing his hair blond but he does it wrong and turns it orange instead and then has to shave all his hair off. And then jealousy starts to sit in as he begins to doubt Sakura's faithfulness, and Komatsu's own heart will be tested by another girl.

Flowers & Bees should be required reading for anyone about to get into a relationship, whether you're 18 or 90 years old, because over 7 volumes it exposes all the lies and mind games that goes on between two people. It also shows the fallacy in pursuing personality traits that you never have possessed. Moyoco Anno's writing and artwork perfectly suited the story and she never shied away from controversy about nudity or sex or language in this series. She let it all hang out and that was good because it was honest and in the end this manga is about honesty. If you just be true to yourself and voice your true feelings to others, you're going to be ok in the end! One complaint I had about this volume was the epilogue at the end that almost ruins the lessons and mood of all that has come before. Still, it was a great series!

                    4 out of 5 stars I'M WITH UGLY...BUT I DON'T WANNA BE!.......2005-02-15

Masao Komatsu is a high-schooler who is tired of never scoring or talking with the ladies. Or when they do talk to him, they just make fun of him and his pig-like friend, Yamada. And there's one girl in particular that has caught his eye, a teen model named Noriko. The problem is that she's way out of his league looks-wise. One day, by accident Masao encounters Noriko's boyfriend on the street and follows him into a salon called "World of Beautiful Men" run by some disturbingly effeminate hairdressers who vow to make him attractive. What ensues is a Frankenstein like story in which Komatsu will have to endure hair-stripping, eyebrow removal, sorry hair-cuts, servility, and humiliation all in the name of looking good. Aren't there already some reality TV shows like this?

Beneath the bare-bones comedy of the whole situation, Moyoco Anno is pulling off a great satire. Why should it always be women who remake their features, who destroy their lives in order to obtain ideal beauty? Here's a guy who's willing to sacrifice anything to attract the opposite sex, to live up to the latest fads, and curry favors from the most desperate women. Anno does a good job of showing a boy who can no longer control his desires and suffers because he never realizes that beauty is just a projection from within. As Masao's looks begin to change, he might just regret that his wishes have been granted.

I would also recommend the manga Kare Kano and the anime His and Her Circumstances. Also the anime and manga of Azumanga Daioh.

5 out of 5 stars Flowers and Bees: For guys and girls.......2004-03-14

Flowers and Bees was something I'd been thinking about buying for the past 2months. But since I don't have a lot of money now, my manga buying has been cut down to one Volume a month. :( So, since it was my birthday, I thought "Hey! I deserve some manga!!!", so I went in the store and was trying to decide which one to get. And I decided... "Well, I want something new, but not something to hard to follow, my brain is fried!!!". So picked out Flowers and Bees.

Flowers and Bees is the story of a young man named "Masao Komatsu", whom has very bad low self-esteem issues. :( He is sick of girls making fun of him and calling him "Helmet Hair" and he is very uncomfortable with himself. He wants woman to fawn over him, he wants to look like a Bishonen(beautiful man), because he thinks it will bring him happiness. So he goes to the "World of Beautiful mean" where some somewhat looney "men" help him become a beautiful man by over charging him and making him look worse(most of the time). They keep telling him he needs to get confidence in himself, and other people tell him this as well as not to care what others think. Yet, he still believe's his looks are the key to happiness.

I *loved* Flowers and Bees so much because it has a very odd ball sense of humor, it is more adult(the rating is mature), but there isn't a ton of sex in it or anything, so I'm *glad* for that. :D

I would reccomend Flowers and Bees to guys or girls, because I am a girl, and I thouroughly enjoyed, and my brother read it, and so did he. We both laughed are rear-ends off.! hehe Its nice to have a guy uncomfortable with himself, I'm so used to reading Shoujo where girls are like that or whatever. Or rather, I am a girl and I know what Masao is going through, and I KNOW guys go through it to, so its nice to see it portrayed here, and very well I might add as well.

*HOPE* you *enjoy*!!! & God Bless ~Amy

5 out of 5 stars Talk about a book a girl would like.......2004-03-08

When I bought this book I took it to school and my friend stole it from my hand later that day she gave it back because she finished it then my boyfriend Jacob took it and at the end of school both of them walked up to me and told me I needed to get the next one so I did and that one was just as good and I am waiting for the next one!!!!!

                    4 out of 5 stars Hilarious!.......2003-12-17

Definitely, most definitely worth reading! I was really looking forward to getting this series, mostly because it was written by Moyoco Anno who wrote Happy Mania, a series by Tokyopop that I am a huge fan of. Moyoco Anno probably has one of the greatest senses of humor since Rumiko Takahashi, though her style of humor is very different from most manga writers. For one thing, what makes her writing so funny is that she doesn't JUST rely on goofy jokes, dumb situations, and puns to make her work humorous. Instead, she uses a lot of real life references and satires, that pretty much make fun of all the ridiculous things people do and that we have to put up with in our lives!

Flowers and Bees in particular is about a guy who has become obsessed with being one of those Japanese pretty boys that all the girls are, in theory, gaga over. Of course, at first he thinks the idea is totally crazy, but with girls telling him his eyebrows are too bushy and that his hair looks like a helmet, he's starting to reconsider. Plus, he becomes infatuated with a girl that he's CERTAIN will fall head over heels with him if he can just show off how trendy and sexy cool he can be.

Anyway, like all good people, at the cost of his wallet and pride, the guy ends up becoming obsessed with the idea. (like a girl that says, "if a little make up looks good on me, then if I cake on five layers of it, I'll look beautiful!) His desire to be the sexiest guy alive, becomes an addiction and the sad thing is, he's just making himself look goofier and goofier the harder he tries.

So, take a poor guy, obsessed with trying to look good. A few girls that love making fun of him trying to look good, and another girl that he practically idolizes every time he sees her walking down the street, and blend in a trio of psychotic male beautitians (god, I need to learn how to spell) and we got ourselves one hell of a funny manga.

Also note that though it was written for older male audiences, it's pretty much got something for everyone. I'm a older teenaged girl and I thought it was great ^_^ So enjoy!
