4 out of 5 stars Genius vs Genius.......2007-03-10

Here's a look at a splendid historic period in a splendid city revealed to us through the lives of two artistic geniuses, Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini. Jake Morrissey gives us a smooth ride through the rough roads of 18th Century Rome, a world dominated and manipulated by various popes and cardinals but given lasting meaning, in the end, by the artists of the period, primarily Bernini and Borromini. Morrissey knows how to spin the story without getting bogged down in architectural minutiae while giving plenty details to set the mood and the understanding of the story. I have never been able to decide which of the two I most prefer, one visit to Rome it's Bernini and on another it's Borromini and Morrissey's book didn't help me change that but certainly helped me to admire them both more than I already did. It is a book that would immeasurably enhance anyone's visit to Rome bringing another dimension to the appreciation of the extraordinary buildings left as a legacy by these two men.

The tantrums, the egos, the "in your face, Pope" attitude and the rest of the drama that surrounds the building of Rome. Interesting read for those who are interested in history, drama and intrigue.

3 out of 5 stars Writing about great architecture in an BLAND way.......2005-04-12

Having read alot of books on art and architecture history..specifically holding a degree in art history and being an architect myself...I can say with some certainty that this book doesn't quite cut it for me.

Essentially this book is a simple biography of both Borromini and Bernini. The Borromini vs. Bernini saga is a great one, and although the author does an adequate job of covering all the basics, I felt the story telling was lacking, dull, and frankly boring. I got the impression the author spent alot more effort creating the Bernini passages than the Borromini ones.

Futhermore the book doesn't even touch on Baroque architecture, what is it? What defines the style? Why did Bernini and Borromini design buildings to look like they did? Perhaps the author assumes all readers are born with an inate knowledge of the evolution of architecture from the high renaissance into the Baroque. Without a basic understanding of Baroque architecture its tough for a novice to appreciate why Bernini/Borromini buildings were/are so special.

Yet I managed to read the text in a few days. With all that said, it just doesn't compare to the better writing of an author like Ross King. (who writes books of a comparable nature).

I'm always torn with these sorts of books because they speak, in great detail, about works of art and architecture yet lack pictures. This book does include some photographs, but these types of books need more than a photograph or two.

The real problem here though is the author's choice of words doesn't do justice to the subject matter.

Its an average book, at a average price, bottom line, a great story told in an average way.

2 1/2 stars really but I'll give it 3 for trying.

If you want to read a good biography of Borromini read Anthony Blunt's version. And by all means check out the architecture when in Roma.

5 out of 5 stars Treat Yourself.......2005-03-13

If you love art and architecture, and even if you don't, you will thoroughly enjoy this book. Jake Morrissey introduces Bernini and Boromini as if they all shared a past life together. The story he tells is so rich in detail and so fascinating in bringing the genius of these two artists to life, that I felt as though I knew them just as well. This book pulled me into the world of 16th century Italy on page one and left me wanting to book a flight to Rome to see where this riveting story unfolded. I am rarely enchanted by books of art history, but this book bears that genius. Buy this book and treat yourself to wonderful experience. Then buy Mr. Morrissey's mystery novel "A Weekend in Blenheim" and treat yourself again.

    Book Description

Meticulously researched over a ten-year period, Nick Mileti has pieced together a gripping account of one of the most famous, but largely unexamined, artistic rivalries ever---the one-sided rivalry between the architect, Francesco Borromini (the instigator), and GianLorenzo Bernini, the greatest overall artist in history. Without a doubt, a number of his startling, but logical, observations and conclusions will send Bernini, Borromini, and Baroque scholars scrambling back to their libraries and computers. ----------- Everything came easy for GianLorenzo Bernini---his art, his style, even his loves. A confidant of monarchs, princes and popes, Bernini was a more talented sculptor and architect than Michelangelo, more successful with the ladies than Raphael, cooler than Guido Reni, and had more common sense than Galileo. The urbane Bernini was a sought-after conversationalist, got rich from his art, and even dressed nice. Bernini has been called the sanest genius who ever lived. Francesco Borromini's life, on the other hand, was a daily struggle. His own worse enemy, he was one of the first afflicted with what is now called 'artistic temperament.' He was anti-social, morose, suspicious, quarrelsome, disdained money, and irritated everyone he felt was interfering with his artistic vision---especially his patrons. Worse, Borromini knocked on Bernini's door all of his life and came up with a handful of marble dust. What does one do when faced with the impossible (self-imposed) task of topping the greatest all-around artist in history? Here's what you do: For your entire adult life you try every devious, malicious trick you can think of. When nothing works, you kill yourself.

1 out of 5 stars Should have stuck to non fiction.......2007-05-17

This would have been a passable non fiction book. The author decided to fictionalize it by inventing what he and presumably the publisher thought of as believable dialog. I cannot state strongly enough what a horrible job he did, really stupid, and it is completely distracting from what is otherwise a fascinating story. But on the good side it is very short and simple to read so you will not waste all that much time on it.

        Book Description

The years from 1520 to 1630 were crucial in the development of Western architecture, but to label as Mannerist the transition from Michelangelo's "licentious" New Sacristy in Florence to Borromini's innovative S. Carlo alle Quattro Fontane is coming to seem unduly simplistic.

In this carefully researched and original study, Andrew Hopkins examines the century's changing functional demands, the political forces, the patronage system, and local traditions. Exploring a wide range of Italian buildings (including those outside the major urban centers), he introduces us to dozens of neglected architects whose works will come as a revelation. By 1630, architecture had taken on a new dynamism that would soon conquer Italy, Europe, and the New World: the baroque. 209 b/w illustrations.

          Book Description

Borromini is one of the great geniuses of Baroque architecture, perhaps the greatest in inventiveness and in use of spatial effects. Here is the first book in English to survey the whole work of the master. The author, former Director of the Courtauld Institute of Art, is known internationally for his many works on French and Italian architecture and painting.

In this lucid and fully illustrated account Anthony Blunt charts Borromini's career and analyzes and assesses his art. Mr. Blunt tells of Borromini's training, relating his style to that of Bernini, under whom he worked, and to the architecture from which he learned, for example Michelangelo's. Borromini's patrons allowed him freedom to evolve his own ideas, and his originality and imagination in inventing new architectural forms become apparent as the author studies individual commissions. His imagination was apparently limitless, but his inventions evolved in terms of rigidly controlled geometry. It is this combination of revolutionary inventiveness and intellectual control that gives Borromini's work particular appeal in the twentieth century.

This book is good for its written content, but lacks good accompanying photography. The photographs are grainy, but if you can move beyond that Anthony Blunt has definitely done his homework on Borromini.

5 out of 5 stars the best book on borromini.......2000-06-21

This book offers an excellent introduction both to the architecture of Francesco Borromini and the architecture of the Italian Baroque. Particularly useful are the comparisons between antique and renaissance architecture (particularly Michelangelo). An indispebsable book for anyone interested in Baroque or Italian architecture in general.

A portrait of the "golden age of European architecture," The Age of Grandeur is a viviid re-creation of one of the most controversial periods in art history. Professor Tapie provides a brilliant account of the great creative burst of architectural genius when the Baroque style swept across Europe. With the help of more than 200 illustrations, he takes the reader on a grand tour of the fountains and facades of Bernin's and Borromini's Rome; of the churches of Prague, Vienna, and Moscow, and of Versailles' pleasure of the enchanted island." And he describes and explains how the Baroque created its impact through the interplay of masses and contracting lines, the dramatic clash of convex and concave elements.

It has great pictures and very complete instruction on the process of inlaying. Having done a few pearl inlays on various instruments I found it very useful. As always though..... practise makes perfect...

During the 1920s and 1930s, black artists and writers achieved something totally unprecedented: they created a new image of African Americans that truly reflected their times as well as their history. In so doing, they set the artistic agenda of the Harlem Renaissance and gave form to some of its most compelling visions.

This innovative study examines the efforts of Harlem Renaissance artists and writers to create a hybrid expression of black identity that drew on their ancient past while participating in contemporary American culture. Caroline Goeser investigates a critical component of Harlem Renaissance print culture that until now has been largely overlooked, arguing that illustrations became the most timely and often most radical visual products of the movement.

This vibrant partnership between literary and visual talents--a trail blazed by artist Aaron Douglas and poet Langston Hughes--resulted in the image of the New Negro, one that remade the African American past in order to foster greater participation in modern American culture and commerce. Illustrations by Douglas, James Wells, Gwendolyn Bennett, and others appeared on covers of books about black American life and in journals such as Opportunity and The Crisis. Goeser considers the strategies that these artists developed to circumvent stereotypes and shows how their work was received within the movement and in mainstream America.

Connecting visual imagery with literary text and commercial enterprise, these illustrations participated in the modern economy in ways that painting and sculpture could not. Goeser reveals how Harlem Renaissance illustrators depicted the wide-ranging and sometimes conflicting ideas about black identity held within the community: African roots and Egyptian heritage, racial uplift and gay pride. She shows how some artists revisited the Judeo-Christian tradition by portraying a black Adam and Jesus, and examines the interdependent relationships between race and sexuality in the work of artists Richard Bruce Nugent and Charles Cullen, the former black, the latter white.

Goeser clearly shows that, contrary to common belief, the visual image of the New Negro was created by African Americans, for African Americans. Her work assigns a central role to black artists as cultural innovators and is a new touchstone in understanding both the emergence of black identity and American culture between the world wars.

                      Book Description

Picturing the City takes an innovative look at the group of urban realists known as the Ashcan School, and at the booming cultures of vision and representation in early twentieth-century New York. Offering fresh insights into the development of modern cities and modern art in America, Rebecca Zurier considers what it meant to live in a city where strangers habitually watched each other and public life seemed to consist of continual display, as new classes of immigrants and working women claimed their places in the metropolis. Through her study of six artists--George Bellows, William Glackens, Robert Henri, George Luks, Everett Shinn, and John Sloan--Zurier illuminates the quest for new forms of realism to describe changes in urban life, commercial culture, and codes of social conduct in the early 1900s.
Synthesizing visual and literary analysis with urban cultural history, Picturing the City focuses new attention on the materiality and design process of pictures. The author scrutinizes all manner of visual activity, from the pandemonium of comics to the mise-en-scene of early movies, from the mark of an individual pen stroke to a glance on the street, from illustrators' manuals to ambitious paintings that became icons of American art. By situating the Ashcan School within its proper visual culture, Zurier opens up the question of what the artists' "realism" meant at a time when many other forms of representation, including journalism and cinema, were competing to define "real life" in New York City.

                      Book Description

As every reader knows, New York defies any single attempt to take its measure. Here is a unique approach: a single-volume, thematically organized history of the city filled with prints, paintings, and photographs -- many in full color -- that make the book a feast for the eye.

The book consists of fourteen mini-histories, each of which can be read independently of the others. The author explores the city's multiple birth (it was named and renamed five times, and was originally known as Angoulême, not as New Amsterdam as most people believe). Deák covers the religious pluralism the city enjoyed as a scruffy Atlantic trading post, the marketing and merchandising that propelled its development, and the rise of the arts, literature, architecture, and sports. Throughout, the author attempts to answer the beguiling question: Was New York unique from the beginning?

                      Readers will find:

                      • The map recording the visit of the explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano to Manhattan Island, circa 1540

                      • The print depicting the defensive barricade, built in 1653 by Dutch governor Peter Stuyvesant, which gave Wall Street its name

                      • Artists' renditions of a bucolic ninteenth-century Brooklyn -- before bridges transformed it into an extension of the Manhattan megalopolis

                      • An 1892 planning sketch of the Grand Concourse, the Bronx's principal boulevard, intended to simulate the grandeur of Parisian roadways and ultimately to outclass Manhattan.

Comments from observers as diverse as Alexis de Tocqueville, Frances Trollope, Fanny Kemble, Charles Dickens, Sarah Bernhardt, Leon Trotsky, Fernand Leger, and W. H. Auden create an immediate sense of time and place and animate an already lively work.

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent publication by Gloria Deák.......2000-09-20

Here at The Philadelphia Print Shop, we have been eagerly awaiting Gloria Deák's Picturing New York. Known for her lively and insightful prose, Deák has produced some of the best publications on American prints and maps available to print dealers and collectors. The reader should not think that this handsome new publication is a print reference book like I.N. Phelps Stokes' Iconography of Manhattan Island (1915-36) or Deák's Picturing America (1988). Rather it is a very readable history of New York City where Deák's knowledge and understanding of graphic illustrations adds greatly to the prose narrative. The book is filled with images of prints, photographs, watercolors, drawings, maps, etc., and these images resonate strongly with the text. The city's history is not presented in the usual chronological manner, but instead Deák gives us a new slant on the story of New York by presenting the history in fourteen chapters each with a different theme. This includes considerations on the naming of New York, its religious, seafaring and mercantile history, different sections of the metropolis, its culture, sports, architecture, and so forth. Each chapter can be read as separate entity, but this is also a book that rewards a reading from cover to cover. Deák's style is vivacious, and the book's interesting format and the breadth and depth of Deák's knowledge ensures that this book will provide new insights for all readers. And though not really a print reference book, the publication does include an excellent bibliography and a scholarly documentary listing of all the illustrations used. This is a publication that belongs on the bookshelf of anyone interested in New York.

5 out of 5 stars Apples and Orchards.......2000-09-07

Deak combines a wealth of photographs of New York City (a majority featuring Manhattan) with an an especially well-written narrative which traces 400 years of colorful history. She organizes the material within 14 chapters, focusing on such diverse subjects as Manhattan's origins, its "multireligious destiny", its emergence as a world-class seaport, its "merchant princes", its multi-ethnic demographics, the ascent of its rich and the struggles of its poor, the metamorphosis of Broadway, the settlement and development of the other four boroughs, its "politicians for all seasons" (ie insightful profiles of Peter Stuyvesant, Thomas Dongan, Fernando Wood, and Fiorello LaGuardia), its triumphs of architecture and urban engineering, its emerging role as a world-class center of the creative and performing arts, the national and international impact of its communications community, and its passion for competitive sports.

All of us have images of New York (most of them of Manhattan and many of them the result of films and television programs anchored there) and many of us know at least something about the city's colorful history. This book both enables us to experience New York in the hundreds of photographs and to learn more about its establishment and subsequent development. Although the volume may seem to be another "coffee table book", don't be misled. While being a window to our nation's most dynamic city, it is also a mirror of our nation's history. At least once a week, I take it in hand and feast upon its contents. So will you.

Gloria Deak's Picturing New York provides a lavish history of New York covering a range of topics; from immigrant waves and their influences upon New York culture to the rise of politicians and establishment of religion and culture. A chronological arrangement of chapters allows for a fine historic overview, while the arrangement of information also lends to browsing. A recommended pick for any collection strong on New York City history and culture.

This is a wonderously enaging book that immerses the reader in the City's 400 year history by means of a related series of sparkling essays and a vivid fabric of images. Gloria Deak boldly engages the entire humanistic adventure that is New York in a way that has not been attempted since John Kouwenhoven's 1953 Historical Portrait.

Picturing New York will open up the City to readers interested in the personalities and events that made and continue to reinvent New York.

                      Book Description

Picturing Will, the widely acclaimed new novel by Ann Beattie, unravels the complexities of a postmodern family. There's Will, a curious five-year-old who listens to the heartbeat of a plant through his toy stethoscope; Jody, his mother, a photographer poised on the threshold of celebrity; Mel, Jody's perfect -- perhaps too perfect -- lover; and Wayne, the rather who left Will without warning and now sees his infrequent visits as a crimp in his bedhopping. Beattie shows us how these lives intersect, attract, and repel one another with dazzling shifts and moments of heartbreaking directness.

Picturing Will offers an perceptive insight into the minds of serveral interesting characters from several different perspectives. The pace is fast, the story interesting, the character development solid if somewhat fragmented. A wonderful insightful book which looks into the mind of a child, the mind of a step-parent, the mind of a divorced mother, and several other characters as well. Mostly though the book is about the effects of others actions on each other and the writing and style is masterful. Highly recommended especially to those unfamiliar with fragmented families.

                      1 out of 5 stars UGH!.......2000-08-08

After having finished this novel, I have now read six of Ann Beattie's books -- her first four, written in the late 70s and early 80s, and two recent novels ANOTHER YOU (1995) and this book PICTURING WILL (1989). Clearly something happened during the intervening years. Whereas Beattie's early fiction was full of odd characters, delightful non-sequiters, and brilliant dialogue, PICTURING WILL is dull, dull, dull. The characters are totally bland and whereas a muscular plot might have fleshed them out more, there is no plot to speak of. Beattie looks at the lives of character and explains, explains, explains; she doesn't DRAMATIZE. This tendency not to dramatize was brilliantly exploited in her earlier work, which recreated the ennui and anomie of her characters lives in prose that was razor sharp. PICTURING WILL is filled with none-too-original characters doing nothing much in prose that is lackluster and undistinguished. PICTURING WILL is so bad it makes ANOTHER YOU look distinguished.
