From the earliest period of its existence, Christianity has been recognized as the "religion of the cross." Some of the great monuments of Western art are representations of the brutal torture and execution of Christ. Despite the horror of Crucifixion, we often find such images beautiful. The beauty of the cross expresses the central paradox of Christian faith: the cross of Christ's execution is the symbol of God's victory over death and sin. The cross as an aesthetic object and as a means of devotion corresponds to the mystery of God's wisdom and power manifest in suffering and apparent failure. In this volume Richard Viladesau seeks to understand the beauty of the cross as it developed in both theology and art from their beginnings until the eve of the renaissance. He argues that art and symbolism functioned as an alternative strand of theological expression-sometimes parallel to, sometimes interwoven with, and sometimes in tension with formal theological reflection on the meaning of the Crucifixion and its role in salvation history. Using specific works of art to epitomize particular artistic and theological paradigms, Viladesau then explores the contours of each paradigm through the works of representative theologians as well as liturgical, poetic, artistic, and musical sources. The beauty of the cross is examined from Patristic theology and the earliest representations of the Logos on the cross, to the monastic theology of victory and the Romanesque crucified "majesty," to the Anselmian "revolution" that centered theological and artistic attention on the suffering humanity of Jesus, and finally to the breakdown of the high scholastic theology of the redemption in empirically concentrated nominalism and the beginnings of naturalism in art. By examining the relationship between aesthetic and conceptual theology, Viladesau deepens our understanding of the foremost symbol of Christianity. This volume makes an important contribution to an emerging field, breaking new ground in theological aesthetics. Some Great Stuff!.......2006-09-27

My modeling interest these days is pretty much limited to model railroads but is sure wish I had had this book in my younger days when everything was fair game. It is a great resource.

It is not a continuous book. Instead, it is a collection of short articles. It starts out with some very basic articles on the tools of the trade and on various methods of painting. The tools article was very basic but I found it very helpful. Now I know what some of those gizmos I see in the hobby shops are for as opposed to what I thought they were for. The articles on painting with spray cans and airbrushes also were very basic but those are the reason I bought the book. I am considering getting an airbrush. Where the book really shines, however, is in the later articles detailing specific methods. Some of these apply to military figurines, some to cars and some to airplanes. Some are applicable across lines. I will probably use few of these but I was fascinated by what can be done.

I was especially fascinated by the article on using aluminum foil to give aircraft a real metallic finish. It makes me want to build a plane just to try it!

This is a great resource for those who want to make their models, of whatever type, look great.

Not a Cruising Guide.......2002-11-26

While this book is beautiful and informative, one should not expect a current cruising guide to these islands. The photography is excellent and the accompanying text provides valuable, if slightly dated, insights to the island culture.

FUN FOR A GIRL OR A BOY.......2005-08-03

I liked the NARUE anime, so I figured I'd check out the manga, and I must say that overall, it's a pretty close match.

Much of the dialogue, even the camera angles, have been similar between the manga and anime in the first three volumes. And, although this particular volume has its serious moments, the humor, when it finally does poke it's head out like a turtle, explodes off the page!

And don't get thrown by the subtle use of flashbacks and flashforwards, either ... just hold on for the ride, especially since the jokes usually pay off rather well. Best of all, the humor generally springs directly from the plot or characters, and isn't just shoe-horned in for a cheap laff.

What can I say? If you liked the anime, you'll probably groove on the manga.

funny, heartwarming romance.......2005-01-06

This family-friendly manga is one of my current favorites. It is funny and sweet; a cross between school romance and slice of life genres. The story is about two middle-schoolers (she: Narue and he: Kazuto) who like one another and start dating. The twist is that Narue is a space alien! But apart from that she's pretty normal.

The storyline is similar to others you've seen, like Ah! My Goddess or AI Love You. Instead of one older and one younger sister, there is a single character who is both! But unlike those other stories, both Narue and Kazuto are quirky real people. As they get to know one another, they have misunderstandings and uncover less attractive sides of one another. But they try to understand and be nice to one another.

Overall, it's a lot of fun and a pleasant read.

This is a very good introduction into "The World of Narue". There is a girl named Narue Nanase, she is half-alien and has no friends. Then one day a classmate of hers goes up to pet an abandoned puppy, the puppy is really a space terrorist in disquise. Narue just happens to be walking by and beats the terrorist with a baseball bat. The kid who was saved: Kazuto Izuka. Kazuto finds the bat and it says "Nanase", so he looks up the class lists and finds her. He then asks her out thus starting alot of adventures together.

World of Narue: Bad Title, Good Manga.......2004-07-10

This manga is what the FLCL manga should have been, in fact, you open the cover and the picture on the inside looks like it was taken straight out of the FLCL anime. This book is pretty fast-paced, slightly perverted, and just a little cute. The cover and title leave much to be desired, but once you get past these two obstacles and open the thing, it's quite a good experience. I liked the slightly shaggy look to the art, and Marukawa keeps the gag frames to a minimum. Overall a pretty cool crazy-alien-girl manga.
