Advance Praise for The Accelerating Universe
"
The Accelerating Universe is not only an informative book about modern cosmology. It is rich storytelling and, above all, a celebration of the human mind in its quest for beauty in all things."
—Alan Lightman, author of Einstein's Dreams
"This is a wonderfully lucid account of the extraordinary discoveries that have made the last years a golden period for observational cosmology. But Mario Livio has not only given the reader one clear explanation after another of what astronomers are up to, he has used them to construct a provocative argument for the importance of aesthetics in the development of science and for the inseparability of science, art, and culture."
—Lee Smolin, author of The Life of the Cosmos
"What a pleasure to read! An exciting, simple account of the universe revealed by modern astronomy. Beautifully written, clearly presented, informed by scientific and philosophical insights."
—John Bahcall, Institute for Advanced Study
"A book with charm, beauty, elegance, and importance. As authoritative a journey as can be taken through modern cosmology."
—Allan Sandage, Observatories of the Carnegie Institution of Washington

Modeling Is Thinking.......2004-10-03
The author, Mario Livio is head of the Science Division at the Space Telescope Science Institute. Livio is a recognized world expert on novae, supernovae, and gamma-ray bursts to compact astronomical objects like white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes. In this book Livio a Hubble Space Telescope scientist introduces us to cosmology as a perfectly balanced universe that is accelerating, along with a deep understanding of key concepts and theoretical ideas. Livio guides his reader through the fundamental questions about human craving for order and then connects it to the order in the creation of universe. He also explores the implications of the universal physical laws for mankind and introduces new findings. Livio in this book embarks on discovering the new revolution under way in cosmology. In one of the most starting discoveries in cosmology in the century, astronomers last year determined that the universe is flying apart at an ever-faster rate. This 'acceleration' has smashed the popular idea of a perfectly balanced 'beautiful' universe and kicked off what Scientific American has proclaimed as a new revolution in cosmology. In his book Livio introduces new findings and explores their astonishing implications. Was Einstein's 'greatest blunder'--his idea of a cosmological constant--a brilliant insight after all? Is there a mysterious kind of energy that fills 'empty' space? Must we abandon the long cherished view of a beautiful universe? If so, the accelerating universe may prove as traumatic a finding as was the heretical notion that the Earth was not the center of the universe to Galileo's inquisitors. Livio elaborates on searching for beauty in the realm of cosmological theories. The book provides and overview of cosmology as well as an aesthetic argument. Livio is concerned with abstract beauty, stemming partly from the simplicity and symmetry of physical laws that are 'symmetrical' in that they do not change with an object's position in space and time. Livio associates such beauty with the 'Copernican principle' that humans do not occupy a privileged place in the universe (much as Copernicus discerned that Earth is not at the center of the solar system). In other words, a beautiful cosmological theory would not depend on wild coincidences or contrivances. Here, Livio enters controversial territory. There has been growing debate in recent years, even beyond the physics community, about whether some aspects of the cosmos, such as the strength of gravity, are 'fine tuned' for life, an if so what this signifies. It's sometimes held to have religious meaning, but could also mean, among other things, that there are multiple universes, or that we define life too narrowly. However, Livio's emphasis on aesthertics does little to further this debate. As he himself acknowledges toward book's end, the 'eye of the beholder' plays some role in determining what's beautiful, even in cosmology. Moreover, there's no guarantee the universe will match anyone's criterion of attractiveness. And at times, Livio's preoccupation with aesthetics seems overwrought. One unwanted finding in cosmology affects him badly: 'I had a feeling in my stomach similar to the one I had in 1975, when I heard that somebody had carried a knife into the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and managed to gouge twelve deep slashes into Rembrandt's masterpiece The Night Watch.' This book has an interesting goal, to combine cosmology and matters more closely associated with art. Unfortunately, The Accelerating Universe is less compelling that this dual focus might suggest. This book helps the reader to think, understand, draw, and evaluate patterns of order and chaos that is a part of this universe with its physical laws.
Good general summary but problematic premise.......2002-02-13
This book furnishes an excellent overview of the observational finds of the past few years that have so shaken up the astronomical community with their implications. As the title indicates, Livio's book examines the discovery that the universal expansion is apparently accelerating rather than slowing down, as previously believed, due to some mysterious driving force. Livio is on the front lines, as one might say, as scientific director of the Hubble Space Telescope project, and he presents an insider's view of things.
Livio unfortunately dallies with something that he calls the cosmological aesthetic principle-- his term-- as a new framework in which to provide and organise cosmological theories. One of the central criteria is the theory's aesthetic appeal, something related to it's symmetry, copernican nature (i.e. not singling out any particular epoch or place as being special), and its overall simplicity. Livio does present some reasonable arguments. But overall his suggestion here is of dubious merit in large part because, as is apparent throughout the book, there is too much emphasising what is desired to be seen, rather than what actually is seen. There is inherently a prior presumption about how the universe should be and should behave-- a product of a particular theoretical tradition-- when the recent findings in this and other respects suggest many surprises up ahead, even at the fundamentals. The author also seems a bit too sure of himself in regard to the recent theoretical models and ideas as well as the observations themselves. The recent findings and the constantly changing nature of science itself would argue for more care in such interpretations. So the book is worth a read as a general summary, but has problems in its basic ideas.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder..........2001-12-23
Mario Livio, the scientific chief of the Hubble Space Telescope project, has written a book with a lot of potential. Considering the implications of recent discoveries that distant galaxies are farther away (and thus receding faster) than expected, with the concomitant suggestion of accelerating cosmic expansion, Livio ponders what this means for cosmological models. He concerns himself here with the junction of scientific theories and aesthetic concerns, the beauty and elegance that seem to have characterized some of the best theories (e.g. Newton's mechanics, Einsteinian general relativity). He suggests that 3 key criteria be used to evaluate the quality of a new cosmological theory-- symmetry, simplicity, and the Copernican principle (the "principle of mediocrity" or, generally, the idea that earth is nothing special in the universe).
Livio's book fails, unfortunately, for several reasons.
(1) One problem is technical: For all the emphasis that Livio puts on beauty and the relation of excellent scientific theories to great art, his book has oddly omitted the occasional figure with an example of such great art-- paintings, sculptures, illustrations, something that a reader can relate his ideas to.
(2) Livio is clearly enthusiastic about his field and his work with the Hubble Space Telescope, and this is a good thing overall. But he becomes too enamored with the recent discoveries and does not properly think through what they are implying. Rather than humbly admitting what astrophysicists and cosmologists constantly repeat in the journals-- the fact that we simply don't know what the current observations truly mean, and what is impelling them-- Livio overreaches here. We don't know the source of the "cosmological constant" that seems to be doing the accelerating, nor exactly how it manifests (or how it did so in the past). Yet Livio claims that it basically maps out the trend of cosmological progression, then proceeds in all kinds of unfounded detail about what it means. This comes out when Livio suggests that the future is now better known than the cosmic past-- an obviously ludicrous conclusion, since not just cosmological theories but fundamental ways of regarding the cosmos and basic assumptions change, and (especially recently) with rapidity. Moreover, no matter what process is discerned, it is simply not possible to say more than the vaguest thing about what it means overall since, in general, our understanding of the universe and spacetime is developing yet still nascent in so many ways. Most puzzlingly, Livio proceeds from this shaky basis to map out a picture of the cosmos which he claims to be beautiful, but is simplistic and downright dull. Which leads to the third problem:
(3) In choosing his criteria for evaluating theory, Livio introduces a regrettable bias. Desires for symmetry and simplicity have been present since Galileo's time. But Livio seems almost obsessed with the Copernican principle. I myself share his predilection for the principle, and would hope that theorists would tend to formulate cosmological models without having to invoke anything special about earth or what has happened here. But we cannot assume up front that this is going to be the case; the evidence has to decide that, not a personal preference. When Livio cites the Copernican principle it seems to be in response to the so-called anthropic principles, the "strong anthropic principle" suggesting some kind of life-promoting design in the cosmos and the "weak anthropic principle" stating the obvious-- life is here on earth, and there must be something about the physical constants and forces that is conducive to it. Livio is justifiably hesitant with regard to the strong version, but is in danger of neglecting the obvious fact of the weak version. Earth, in some sense, might seem "messy" and "incongruent" with regard to the criteria that Livio sets up, but the planet may indeed turn out to be special, especially when the enigma of earth's biology is considered. We should not assume that up front, but nor should we rule it out; cosmological theories have to be open to different possibilities. As one reviewer below pointed out, Aristotle's musical spheres picture was very beautiful, but it turned out to be flat wrong. Accurate theories in cosmology may turn out not to have simplicity to be comprehensive, and the Copernican principle may not be appropriate, at least in certain respects; we have to be open to that possibility, which suggests that Livio's Cosmological Aesthetic Principle might be a questionable set of criteria.
Great book for a novice.......2001-11-08
I am only 14 and want to be an astrophysisyst and I think this was a great book to start with. The book goes into good detail on everything exept for DNA and RNA. If you can relate to art, and understand the beuty of the cosmos, you will like this book ALOT. This book went by fast for me because it has such good explanations of everything in the book and was easily understandable. If you really want to study space, this is a great book to start it with.
Livio delivers........2001-03-17
Theoretical scientists are usually the engine behind new discoveries, which leaves the burden of proof to others who deal with the real world. The discoveries of 1998 have turned the situation around in cosmology for the first time in many years. Observation has shaken the foundation of theoretical physics and leapt into the lead. When this happens you have to retrench to original tenets and start building again, since your former building of thought has collapsed around you. In that, Livio's solution of defining beauty in a theory as three basic assumptions from which to build, falls exactly on the mark. I liked particularly the insights into Einstein's theories and how they actually help explain the possibility of negative gravity. I missed a good account of the supernova 1A discovery which made possible the expansion observations, but if you are an informed layperson who wants to experience the suject of expansion, this is your book. The success does not continue, however, when theology is brought in the ecuation. That subject is for other areas of human endeavor and cosmologists are as bad as any other scientist when crossing over. All in all, this is a great book and will give you a good understanding of the new cosmology.
Book Description
The projects in this superb teaching guide not only offer enjoyable drawing exercises, but are also designed to instill good working methods to benefit artists at all levels. Readers are shown different ways to look at a subject by studying shape, form, space, light, texture, and movement as applied to figure drawing, still life, landscape, and abstract subjects. Rather than prescribing a single, absolute technique, the book presents drawing as an act that reflects the complexity of human experience in numerous ways.
Peter Stanyer and Terry Rosenberg, painters who have exhibited their own work in numerous shows, are both dedicated teachers who conduct highly regarded art courses in London for students at all levels.

Just another co-authored.......2004-06-29
"A Foundation Course in Drawing" by PETER STANYER & TERRY ROSENBERG
As a general rule, there are not many "really good" co-authored books out there. This rambling and disjointed introduction to drawing is no exception. It seems as though, when books have two authors, that both persons simply agree to give a half-effort, in hopes that the two of them can put together a whole, dynamic book. It just doesn't seem to work here.
Extreme language on the cover of a book is a *WARNING*
Words like "Complete guide to" or "Ultimate" or "Essential guide to" etc. "Basic" or even "FOUNDATION COURSE" might seem to give the authorship a great deal of liberty. In fact, it requires that an author really cover the basics, the FOUNDATION, in a very clear and well organized manner. This book lays an incomplete FOUNDATION.
It is limited to "Gesture Drawings" in the first 20 pages, and then, after a lot of wordy text, you reach page 41 before you see the SIMPLIFIED FIGURETTE, or BLOCK PUPPET. Only two of them: One drawn with Cylinders, the other with Ovals. That's it. Just two images, and no more.
The book is over-reaching. It outlines more material than it can cover adequately in a FOUNDATION COURSE. There is a bit of an "attitude" in this book. It's as though the authors are saying:
"If you know already how to copy the line drawings in our lessons, FINE! If you are a BEGINNER, and cannot....TOO BAD!"
The book is divided into Five Sections:
Life drawing, Still Life, Landscape, Abstract Drawing (in a FOUNDATION COURSE??????) and Drawing Systems. Neither of the last two sections belongs in a book on FOUNDATION in drawing. See what I mean? The book is "over-reaching".
Allow me to give yet another example. The Back Cover says this:
"Will help artists of all abilities."
Excuse me, but shouldn't a course laying a FOUNDATION, be of help to BEGINNERS? If someone is already an "artist" shouldn't they be using more advanced books? That is why this book is "over-reaching". The authorship has a fuzzy focus about who the intended audience is.
This book does move into INTERMEDIATE material, but sacrifices BASICS to get there. (over-reaching)
The problem with a multitude of these drawing instruction books are flaws that fall into several categories:
(1) they try to cover virtually EVERYTHING in art generally, including PAINTING or COLOR, or COMPOSITION which means they must skip quickly over their DRAWING BASICS for the beginner to do so. A good drawing book must start with DRAWING, and stick with DRAWING only, for at least 3/4ths of its chapters. The really good drawing books do this.
(2) the author is extremely dull and uninspiring to begin with, illustrating the book with ordinary household objects for suggested drawing exercises; objects like can openers, coffee pots, key chains, tables, chairs, bicycles and has no true justification for putting another drawing book on the market (good books are already in print), and copying the same outline for growth that other books have.
(3) the author is too wordy, loading down the book with unnecessary theory and intellectualizations.
With those flaws in mind, it is clear that "A FOUNDATION COURSE IN DRAWING" is too broad in scope and moves too quickly away from basics into intermediate material (flaw 1), is no better than other books on the market (flaw 2) and the drawings and illustrations are among the worst availble in a basic drawing HOW-TO. (they are REALLY BAD!) The text is alternatively overly-simplistic or overly-complex.
"A FOUNDATION COURSE IN DRAWING" is a poor introduction for any beginner, but the book is inexpensive for 276 pages if that's all you want.
Excellent........2004-03-09
One of the best drawing books I have found. Covers a lot.
Novices and Art Teachers Get This Book!.......2001-06-19
This is a great book filled with constructive projects for Drawing. It is good for people who are beginning to draw to Art teachers. If you are an Art teacher the projects are useful for your classroom in developing student's drawing skills. It thoroughly covers the basics of Drawing. It covers drawing from still life to abstract. I highly recommend this book. It is easy to understand and filled with diagrams for those visual learners out there.
only if it is free.......2001-03-24
would I recommend this book. I am a professional artist and I find there are so many good books out there... this is not one of them. The drawings are good but not great, and certainly not great to learn by. The lessons are so, so. Each time I open and close this book, I get hardly anything at all...

Customer Reviews:
A hot sequel to Bound and Determined.......2007-06-19
Mark Sullivan goes undercover as a stripper for a club in Las Vegas as a favor to his brother-in-law. With his CPA background, he needs to take a look at the books of Nicki DiStefano's strip club to see if he can figure out if the club is laundering mafia money.
Nicki DiStephano loves running a strip club and is determined to run it without her uncle's interference. Yes, he contributed a significant amount of money so that she could buy the club, but she resents his interference and the fact that he sent Blade Bocelli, one of his men, to check her books.
Nicki meets Mark when he auditions for her. She's looking for a new stripper and has seen many men audition, but no one has sparked her interest, that is, until she watches Mark perform for her. Immediately, the sparks fly between the two of them, but Mark is leery of getting involved with any woman after his previous relationship. However, he takes advantage of their attraction to get closer to Nicki and get a look at those books.
Strip Search is a sequel to Bound and Determined, the story of Mark's younger sister Kerry. You don't need to read that book first to enjoy Strip Search, although there are many mentions of the characters and situation of the first book. I did enjoy this book more than Bound and Determined - Nicki is a strong independent woman and Mark is very sexy. Once again, the cover of this book is very deceptive as there are plenty of steamy sex scenes - not anything that you would expect looking at that cover.
This book is a fun read, but for me, not a keeper. I felt that some of Mark's actions and comments to Nicki were quite harsh - a sane woman would have given him the heave ho. However, I enjoyed it and wouldn't mind reading about more of the characters from this book as it appears that there could be a sequel about Nicki's stepsister Lucia.
strip search by Shelley Bradley.......2007-05-06
I enjoyed reading this book very much, but the book "Bound and Determined", which is #1 and "Strip Search" #2 in order of reading, was a better book I thought, although they were both really great books. Just be sure to read "Bound and Determined" first. I give "Bound and Determined 4 1/2 stars. All of Bradley's books are a joy! Happy reading!
Yummy Story.......2007-04-20
Nice way to spend a cold evening in bed or a warm soak in the tub! I just wish I had first read her prior book (Bound and Determined) which was yummy as well, and introduced the primary male character (as well as the more minor characters) in this book. Scenes were hot enough for me, not overly kinky, there are actual plots and I don't regret buying either one!
Happy happy read!.......2007-04-01
I loved this book, Shelley Bradley will soon be a best selling author!
She writes characters you can relate to and her story stays true to her characters. More from this author and as her pen name Shayla Black.
Sizzling romance with an actual plot.......2007-02-23
In order to determine if a Vegas strip club is a mob front, Mark Sullivan goes undercover as a stripper with hopes of getting a peek at the club's books. He's aware that the club's owner is the sexy offspring of a reputed mobster, and decides that he'll stop at nothing to bring the bad guys down, including seduction to determine where her loyalties lie. Burned by an ex-wife who set him up for a fall, Mark is even more determined to bring them to justice since this was the ring that she was involved with.
Nicki DeStefano reluctantly entered into a deal with her uncle Pietro to open the Vegas male strip club. Night after night, the club is hopping and appears to be making money hands over foot, but Nicki isn't seeing it and since her accountant was gunned down in a drive by shooting, her uncle has placed Blade Bocelli, one of his trusted associates as her temporary accountant. Mark and Blade clash from the start; while Mark and Nicki immediately enter into a torrid (and very sizzling) affair). Both start to feel something deeper than passion for each other, but trust does not come easy for Mark as he holds his ex-wife's misdeeds against any woman he comes into contact with, and Nicki cannot compete with a bad memory. But with a man with so many trust issues, does she really want to get involved any deeper?
Bradley's novel is filled with intrigue and lots of intense passion between the leads. They exude chemistry and despite the number of couplings, the reader won't feel like they are getting an anatomy lesson - the story and characters are all so well developed. I didn't realize it was a sequel when I picked it up, and after reading this one, I am intrigued enough to pick up "Bound and Determined" which is the story of Mark's sister Kerry and PI partner Rafe.

The first scholarly book-length examination of the work of comics legend Neil Gaiman includes detailed analysis of his best-selling "Sandman" and "Death" series, a look at his work's relationship to Joseph Campbell, and such topics as "Living in a Desacralized World," "The Relationship of Dreams and Myth in Campbell, Jung, and Gaiman's Sandman," "Humanization, Change, and Rebirth: The Hero's Journey," "The Role of the Artist and the Art of Storytelling," and more.
Customer Reviews:
Terribly Disappointing.......2007-09-14
This is one of the worst books i have ever read. The same quotes from the Sandman series are used over and over again and the author's personal experiences cloud any real information. "Intelligent" and "scholarly" are the last words I would use to describe this book; it reads like a high school student's analysis. I was excited to see a book-length examination of both the Sandman series and the ideas of Joseph Campbell, both of which I am extremely interested in, but this was disappointing beyond words.
Neil Gainman's The Sandman and Joseph Campbell: In Search of the MOdern Myth.......2007-01-18
If you are looking for another story told by Neil Gaiman - This is NOT it - this is a very well written book by stephen Rauch about the philisopical and contexual aspects of myth. The book just happens to use the Sandman sieres as its primary backdrop for its discussion. All and all a very interesting book to which i would recommend, and one not be an avid fan or very knowledgable about The Sandman sieres to enjoy. Just make sure to consider it a book primarily about myth and philosophy as opposed to a book about the Sandman sieres.

Interesting mystery/PI graphic novel.......2005-04-13
Adult black & white graphic novel.
A private investigator, Jack McKinick, is hired to track down a billionaire's "wife" and ends up in some very seedy situations. The story begins with extremely muscular Jack getting dressed to go to meet Roderick Ottermer. On the bed in the room is a nude woman, and as he is leaving, she asks Jack if they have a future together, and just like that, they're through.
Ottermer lives in a castle like palace guarded by some huge nude demon statutes. When Jack walks in he spots three people in the room. Ottermer, and two nude people one male one female. The nude people leave the room, and later the girl returns in a revealing transparent dress (top is transparent). Jack's hired and told to start looking for the missing "wife," Joyce, where she hangs out, in strip clubs.
Jack hurriedly strolls through several strip clubs until he finds one where a woman, a very skeletal woman, is being beaten for refusing to go out and dance. Jack intervenes, takes out the woman ("ugliest . . . dog I've ever seen") beating skeleton girl and is attacked by all the other nude women at the club, who think that he is the "Gamesman." There are definitely some ugly woman in this here book (and some pretty ones to).
When the fight's stopped on account that they find out he isn't the Gamesman, Joyce shows up with a gun. Jack ignores the woman with the gun, and takes skeletal girl away from the strip club and gives her some money. He returns and learns that Joyce's "husband" is the Gamesman and that he likes to mutilate her and force tattoos onto her. The Gamesman would track Joyce down in the city, grab her in broad daylight, throw her into his car and then head back to his home. Once there he would inject Joyce with drugs, and the games would be on. There's another 22 pages left, and I don't want to give everything away.
Overall, the book is well-drawn, not pretty, but well-drawn just the same. The story is an interesting one, though a little thin. The book contains rape/nc/humiliation/she-males/etc. Quite a violent little book, definitely not for the weak of heart.
