Customer Reviews:
Tons and Tons of Ideas!.......2000-10-09
You will enjoy this idea packed book! Every picture is beautiful and inspiring! Mix and match the ideas, they don't all have to come from one home. Floor plans included, with builder and interior design resources given. Street of Dreams website (www.streetofdreams.com) tells you locations of when they will be in your neighborhood. A must see!
Does not Disappoint!.......2000-07-02
If you can't find your dream home in this book, it may not exist in any book! While it only contains 50 plans, every one is beautiful and unique. Each home is covered in four or more pages, with color photos of the front and back of the home, inside, and of course, the floor plans. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a luxury home to build. Each one has many details and there are homes ranging from 3,000 to almost 10,000 square feet. I have had a hard time trying to find plans for homes over 5,000 square feet, and a majority in this book fit that description. I wish I could find more like it.

photographic help.......2006-11-10
A book to refer to again and again as you mature in your photographic experience.
Beautiful photographs throughout with excellent examples of difficult exposure problems and the solutions for them.
Lacking Instruction.......2006-08-10
As a new photographer, I did not find this book very helpful in giving an in-depth explanation of creating correct exposure. The book had a brief summarization of each topic (ex. shooting in snow) at the beginning of each chapter, and then was followed by his photographs to assumingly show examples of the topic. It seemed more like a collection of his photographs than anything for me. I didn't find that there was enough information in the book for helping to correct exposure issues. The photos were great, just really lacked instruction. I ordered several books of this type at one time, and highly recommend The Better Photo Guide to Digital Photography by Jim Miotke-loaded with helpful instruction and tips, including lessons. Also Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure. These two have helped tremendously vs.Perfect Exposure by Zuckerman.
Great book.......2006-03-03
Jim is an amazing photographer. This book covers so many different shooting situations and he addresses the exposure problems that plague all photographers. He teaches how to find the proper exposure yourself and lists his camera settings with each photo. The variety of situations and his explanations of what he thinks about as he chooses his settings and sets up the shots give us great insights and a better understanding of how to make our own photos better. I am also taking a photoshop course from Jim through a Better Photo online course.
Oh, did I mention that the photos are incredible as well.
It is excelent book!!.......2005-08-05
I am very happy because I have one.It is very interesting book.
Many impressive ,color photographs and very important advices about metering and exposes.
I recomend this book every serious photographer.
Concise, to the point and challenging.......2004-12-30
Ok first off, lets get this out of the way, The photos alone more then make this book worth its price. But this isn't a picture book, it is quite possibly one the most well written and to the point books on exposure out there. The author deals with exposure, not your camera, or its features, but on capturing the right amount of light. Regardless of the equipment your using. This was of great use to me, as all the digital photography books out there, worry to much about the digital part and not enough about the photography part.
This book will explain to you the things you need to consider in order to achieve proper exposure and give you some quick tips and finding that all important 18% grey point.
He also weighs in on the concepts of bracketing as well as the exposure rules of thumb. In a sense slaying those sacred cows and tell you ways to get the exposure right for that particular event instead of taking bracketed shots and hoping to get a good one out of the 3.
Product Description
Exposure is one of the most demanding aspects of photography. It is not always easy to get it right, and achieving the perfect exposure requires a thorough knowledge of theory, materials, processes and equipment. In this comprehensive new book well-known authors and working photographers Roger Hicks and Frances Schultz draw on many years of experience to present authoritative information on all aspects of exposure, both in theory and in practice. They begin by looking at the perfect exposure and then move on to explore characteristic curves shadows, highlights and speed and subject and image brightness. Chapters on film testing and the Zone system are followed by full explanations of all types of metering, and the book is completed by detailed sections on printing for the best pictures in both monochrome and color. Illustrated with a stunning selection of black and white and color photographs demonstrating technical points or simply standing alone as inspirational examples of the photographer s art, this will become an essential work of reference for both those fascinated by exposure theory and practical photographers who simply want to take better pictures.

Pompous, Useless Drival.......2006-01-01
Written to obscure rather than illuminate. Effectively makes simple subjects seem complex. Skip this and buy anything by Ansel Adams instead.
Thick, Gluey Muck!.......2003-08-09
Don't let the beautiful cover fool you, this book contains dreadfully complex, dry text that confuses rather than enlightens. Unless you are enticed by topics such as, "Interpreting the D/Log E Curve" or "Converting Log Density Ranges" there are easily better choices. If you're looking for clarity - whether novice or advanced photography skill - buy Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Exposure." Its simplicity is effective and refreshing.
Poorly Written Amateur [Junk].......2003-03-02
You can judge a photographer's skill by his/her photographs. All of the photographs in this book look like they were taken by Average Joe with a disposable camera. This book was written backwards. The book does not mention metering technique until chapter 8 (near the end of the book)! They mention handheld meters in chapter 7 but never explain proper use of them. The book never discusses studio lighting techniques or even portable (on camera) flash technique. They never discuss proper use of available light or use of lighting modifiers (reflectors, diffusers, etc . . .). Most of this book rants on and on about arbitrary +/- .25 to .5 exposure adjustments for a million different specific situations (mostly travel photographs) instead of explaining overall technique. Save your time and money. Read another book written by a professional.
Great book for expanding your basic knowledge of exposure........2001-03-22
I was really impressed with this book and how it took an average photographer through the steps towards understanding exposure. There are many fundamental concepts explained in a "layman's fashion" and I would highly recommend this book. There is only one chapter that enters into deep theory which the author suggests you may want to skip or come back to later. If you want to increase your basic understanding of film exposure, natural light and how film development plays an important part, then this book is for you!
Too much information that is not usable.......2001-03-03
There is too much information in this book that is way too technical or simply of no use to me. Here is a quote from the book: "With a spot meter, you can measure the log brightness range of the subject; you know that you need a log density range of around 1.1 to make a contact print on grade 2 paper: and armed with the film manufacturer's gamma/time cures, plus a good guess at the flare factor for your lens, you can select the appropriate development time."
The photographs in the book are average to the point that when looking at them I'm thinking, "I can do better than that."
The authors have a converstaional style in writing, and if you want ALOT of detail on exposure, maybe this is the book for you. There is 20 pages devoted to the chapter on film testing alone, a couple of paragraphs of which are devoted to describing the example negatives that are over/under exposed. The problem is, the negatives they are describing are in one of their other books! You would think that at 192 pages, they could at least include the examples they are refering to.
The key concept in the book is ". . .think hard about how you want a given tone to 'read' in the final picture, and adjust your metering technique accordingly."

Social Documentary from the other side.......2003-12-09
Its a pity this book is out of print. I've been using it as a discussion trigger for my tertiary photography students since I bought a remaindered copy (and that was about twenty years ago). Before the days of rampant litigation and ethics committees, Mary Lloyd Estrin turned her camera, not on the poor and underprivileged and powerless, the usual target of doco photographers (the archetype becomes a cliche in "Blow-Up"), but on the rich. She gives them the apparent last word - allowing them a space on each print under the image to write a statement. The interaction between image and text is the big surprise here - with remarkable candour the subjects often write the most revealing and sometimes damning comments on themselves and thier priviliged lives. Compare this with Bill Owens's similar strategy applied to the middle class in the 70's and you will wonder how this book has come to 'disappear'!

Best British Comedy Ever!.......2005-11-02
The book "To the Manor Born" is based on the BBC series of the same title which was produced in the late 1970's. Peter Spence is both the author of the television series as well as this delightful book. The story revolves around the life of the recently widowed, youthful Audrey Fforbes-Hamilton. She is a wealthy, English lady who looses her manor due to the overwhelming financial debt of her late husband, Marton Fforbes-Hamilton. Audrey is forced to live/adjust to life as one of the "little people" in her village, while she plots/schemes to regain her rightful title as "lady of Grantleigh Manor". There are several subplots in the book which were not included in the television series. The ending is superb,a masterpiece!
Romance, conflict and comedy in the English countryside........1999-11-18
Audrey fforbes-Hamilton, newly widowed, finds that all her dreams have come true, she now controls Grantleigh Manor in the picturesque English countryside. However, tragedy follows when she finds that her husband left the estate bankrupt, and in the hands of receivers. The Manor is sold to the charming and rich Richard DeVere, leaving Audrey to scheme a way back. Along the way, the reader is rewarded with an interesting and romantic story liberally sprinkled with wit and humor.
To those who have seen the television show: This is the book upon which the late `70s/early `80s show was based. Much of the book corresponds to episodes 1, 2, 4, 6 and 7. However, the book contains a number of subplots that do not exist in the show, and the conclusion is an absolute masterpiece.

Book Description
Author Donna Clementoni,
mining the resources of
history and hearsay,
pens a portrait of
her Italian-American relatives
in poetic tribute to their
immigration to America in search of
a better life for their families.
Their trials and tribulations
are recounted in
charming and colorful verse
as they assimilate into their new land,
move into its neighborhoods,
fight in its wars
and pursue the American Dream.
They were not to the manor born.
Intrinsically, they understood
that there are those
who lord over the land
and those who labor.
Immigrants from the Mezzogiorno,
Italy's poorest region south of Rome,
belonged to this less fortunate
fraternity.
These amazing pioneers,
out of sheer desperation
or fearless determination,
charted the course for
all their descendants to follow.
