Book Description
Before becoming a city, St. Petersburg was a utopian vision in the mind of its founder, Peter the Great. Conceived by him as Russia's "window to the West," it evolved into a remarkably harmonious assemblage of baroque, rococo, neoclassical, and art nouveau buildings that reflect his taste and that of his successors, including Anna I, Elizabeth I, Catherine the Great, and Paul I.
Crisscrossed by rivers and canals, this "Venice of the North," as Goethe dubbed it, is of unique beauty. Never before has that beauty been captured as eloquently as on the pages of this sumptuous volume. From the stately mansions lining the fabled Nevsky Prospekt to the magnificent palaces of the tsars on the outskirts of the city, including Peterhof, Tsarskoe Selo, Oranienbaum, Gatchina, and Pavlovsk, photographer Alexander Orloff's portrait of St. Petersburg does full justice to the vision of its founder and namesake. The text, by art historian Dmitri Shvidkovsky, chronicles the history of the city's planning and construction from Peter the Great's time to the reign of the last tsar, Nicholas II. Anyone who has ever visited--or dreamed of visiting--the city of "white nights" will find St. Petersburg irresistible.

IMPERIAL RUSSIA.......2006-09-30
This is a gorgeous book on a beautiful city. My father would have loved this book, he had an interest in all things Russian, he and my mother toured St. Petersburg and loved it. The images in this book are crisp and text highly informative. St. Petersburg has a wealth of beautiful Imperial Buildings and they are shown at their best in this wonderful book. From Peter the Great's Peterhof to the Hermitage, to Catherine the Great's Tsarkoe Selo, the best of Imperial Russian architecture is on display. If you have any interst in Imperial Russian architecture or just enjoy fine books, then i cannot imagine you being disappointed. Highly recommended.
Worth Every Penny.......2003-06-17
This can be an expensive book if you're not buying it used, but it's absolutely worth it. The beautiful pictures are excellent at presenting St. Petersburg's amazing architectural wonders. The text is well-written, and even if you don't have a great deal of knowledge of Russian history, you'll still be able to follow along without any trouble.
A gem - read and enjoy!

St. Petersburg: Architecture of the Tsars.......2001-08-28
One of the most beautiful books I've ever come across, St. Petersburg:Architecture of the Tsars is a must for those interested in Imperial Russian history, architecture, or both. The lavish book aptly illustrates the architecture of the former capital of the tsars, from the exuberant Russian Baroque of Peter the Great, to the neoclassicism of Catherine the Great, to the Art Nouveau of Nicholas II. With chapters arranged in chronological order, the book illustrates the development of the city through the reigns of each tsar/tsaritsa, and includes seperate chapters on Pavlovsk, Tsarskoe Selo, and Peterhof. The book is well worth the price.
Book Description

Whittle explains her evocative use of color in accompanying passages and details the numerous creative techniques she employs for capturing the beauty of flowers, including negative painting, masking, lifting out, and glazing. Novice painters and experienced artists alike will benefit from a series of instructional step-by-step projects and photographs. Special tips are also provided on how to capture light and shadow and how to create an overall harmony within a piece.
Customer Reviews:
Watercolor techniques for floral subjects.......2007-09-29
If you like painting floral subjects, Janet Whittle's method may be of interest to you.
Starting with masked subject areas and dropping in pure colors, Whittle creates a lively, mottled background and then goes on to paint negative spaces around leaves and background flowers. This gives the effect of distant leaves and petals in shadow. Then the main flowers are painted in, dropping colors into the center, shadowing petals and adding detail to stamens, pistils and other structures.
The good thing about this technique is it makes effective bouquet subjects. The bad thing is that the technique leads to somewhat of a sameness to every painting. In this book, the author adds vases, pots and other subjects to the still life, which helps. If you have this book, you probably don't need any of the others as this one is more comprehensive. I don't feel inspired to copy this technique, but there are worthwhile tips to absorb in handling iris especially.

Lovely and Easy! You'll feel like a Pro!.......2005-11-22
Trust me. I have absolutely no artistic ability but this book was inspirational and fun to use. Lovely illustrations, very easy instructions. Fungi and small birds as well!
Nice n Simple.......2002-10-31
bought this as first book on decorative painting becoz it is not too overwhelming. designs and brushstrokes taught are simply and easy to do, perfect for a beginner.
one of the features i like is that there are step by step paintings shown to see how the drawings are done. with arrows to indicate the directions of the brushstrokes. drawings look as if they are painted directly on the book and are not like photographs taken from a distance which makes viewing much easier.
but if you are looking for detailed information on types of paints, mixing etc then this is not the book for you.
nice book.......2002-10-30
it is first book tat i bought on this topic as it did not overwhelm me as other books that i saw on the shelf. As i think it is supposed to be easy guide, it does not have alot of information on type of brushes to use, paints and brush techniques. however, the designs are simple and quick to do and appealing for me.
one of the best feature is that it gives you step by step paintings of how the flower is drawn and it shows arrows to indicate the directions of the brush strokes. The pictures are also shown close enough like it is painted on the pages of the book. i think that's how you are supposed to learn from the book
however, if you are looking for things like brush techniques or more detailed information / instructions, this may not be the book for you.
give it 3 stars becoz i feel it cld have been slightly more descriptive in instructions.
a must have.......2002-07-04
About the very first book I bought about decorative painting. This artist's style is very unique, natural and beautiful without being too loud. Try to paint on the closet, door, bowl, cup, even on the wall. My family liked them a lot.
good illistration, step by step instruction exact.......1999-10-27
The subject matter is complete. Easy steps to follow and understand. Shows the author is talented and a good teacher.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Reference.......2006-04-20
I see in a few reviews here how they talk about the book being too technical. It seems that if you are a advanced enough photographer to be loading CIR into your camera, it should be safe to say that you dont need to be told how to take pictures. This guide tells you how the film reacts to different situations. The creativity is up to you and thats the way it should be. I do however agree that the author could have gone a little more in depth about the filter usage & CIR, but its a fine refrence overall. There is very little written about this film and this book fills a lot of the gaps.
The Book on Color Infrared Photography.......2006-03-13
This is truly the only book devoted just to color infrared film photography. The author takes great care in explaining how this film works and how to best utilize it's potential. The images are intriguing and unusual. I found it to be a great addition to my library of photography texts.
A Good Place to Start.......2003-01-30
Mr. Begleiter's The Art of Color Infrared Photography seems to be the only book on the subject of color infrared photography that is currently on the market, so if you are looking for guidance on the subject, this is it. The good news is that this book does do a good job of providing enough information to get you off to a good start. You will be confident that you know what you are doing the first time you load a roll of Kodak CIR film into your camera. The book covers all of the topics essential to infrared photography, such as: the physics of infrared light, how the film works, film handling, processing, pushing/pulling, using filters, focusing and various light sources. I give the book only 4 stars because it is not what I would call comprehensive. I wish some of the above topics had been covered in more detail and with more examples. There is only one example of using a yellow filter vs an orange filter, and no examples of doing this under different types of light. Filters are rather essential to IR photography, and I would have liked to see them treated in more depth. There is mention of the alternative AR-5 process for developing the film, but there is only one example of that, too. It peaked my interest, but I couldn't find out more. There is no information on cross-processing color IR film as a negative, which I know some people do. Mr. Begleiter probably doesn't cross-process his film, but some information on the subject would be nice. A little color IR goes a long way, but this book does showcase some nice examples of subjects for which color IR is actually appropriate and attractive, which is helpful and encouraging. All in all, this book not perfect, but it is a worthy addition to the library of any photographer.
Begleiter is a Genius!.......2002-06-07
If you are interested in adding some zest to your color photography, this book will lead the way. The images in this book are goregeous and the descriptions on how to create images of your own are excellent! I highly recommend purchasing this book!
Mixed feelings on this book.......2002-04-12
I just bought this book recently, and while I think it might be a useful technical reference, it gives little new insight into the possibilities of CIR film. Charts and graphs are all well and good, but I don't find them terribly helpful. Mr. Begleiter also gives very little information on color filters other than Wratten 12Y and seems to use only that filter except for the one image taken with an orange filter. I would've liked to see more exploration into the color results from different filters other than yellow. Don't get me wrong, there is useful information in this book, primarily the information on filters to correct for tungsten or fluorescent light and what happens to the film when it is outdated. This book, however, should not be the only book you read on infrared photography. This book could work as a companion piece to Joseph Paduano's "The Art of Infrared Photography", which provides more information on which color filters to use to get certain color results. The two together would make a fairly complete course in IR photography. Begleiter's book is good on a very technical level, though I think it would be more helpful to see actual images made with different conditions and exposures instead of graphs or at least in addition to the graphs.

Walt Kelly's Pluperfect Pogo
ASIN: 0671553747 |
Customer Reviews:
Outrageously Fun .......2006-01-04
This collection presents not only reprints of some Pogo strips, but lots more from a fanzine of the 1970s and `80s. The strips present Pogo, Albert, and all the rest in their beloved swamp. Characters other than the usual stars come and go: Tammanany the tiger, P.T. Bridgeport whose word balloons speak only in circus headlines, Deacon Mushrat, and more. Kelly was a keen observer of his political milieu as well, so look-alikes of Spiro Agnew and a few other figures make their appearances.
The real surprise in this volume is the non-Pogo material. Kelly's widow provides biographical information and pictures of Kelly himself. Other material includes topical cartoons from his college days, the Pogo pack supporting the Red Cross and other groups, promotions for the strip, and lots more. The real surprises, though, were some of Kelly's essays (he started in newspapers) and ideas for a strip that never made it. Perhaps it's better that "Skoot" never made it. The strip looked as cute as Pogo, but maybe too cute. I don't see how it could have carried Pogo's political punch.
It's a great collection for anyone who loves Pogo, and especially for those who want to know a little more about the man behind the `possum.
