I purchased this book for my daughter as a Christmas gift. She works for an architecture firm and specializes in historic preservation. She has wanted this book for years but it is pricey and she did not feel she could purchase it for herself. She is extremely pleased with book and would recommend it to anyone that is interested in the history of architecture.
The Best Complete Book on Western Architecture.......2004-04-26
Without a doubt, this text is the Quintessential Gold Standard for introductory Western Architecture. A must have for anybody who is serious about learning about how Western Architecture has evolved over time, and with little if any bias. Its only weak area is with architectural development in Asia and South/Central Meso America. Other than that, this is my third copy of the text and it just keeps getting better. Believe me when I say, this is one book you may never want to loan out, for it may not get returned. I know, it's happened to me once already.
Full of historical detail.......2003-10-17
Mine is a new 1975 edition (which was a small fraction of the new price). It is as much a history of the world--and an incredibly detailed one--as a history of architecture. It opens each of its 40 chapters with a discussion of a civilization or era, then describes the buildings very matter-of-factly. Sometimes opinions emerge: Louis Kahn is cited as an example of a flash-in-the-pan; FLLW's Guggenheim is criticized as impractical.
The photos are top quality B/W, often very old. Its real strength is early architecture; by chapter 35, it is only finishing up the Renaissance. The authors are so knowledgeable, the writing so polished after 18 editions, all others pale by comparison.
I don't think there's much of a market for these books outside of libraries, but those who read it will marvel at its erudition.

For over a century, this has been THE classic study of the history of architecture. It is a work of art in it's own right and worth owning simply for the joy of hefting it's not inconsiderable weight and browsing once in a while - even as a layman. The text is extraordinarily readable and the illustrations are a delight. It's so packed full of information - believe me, even if you have only a limited interest in architecture you will learn a great deal that will surprise you from this book! Enthusiasts for classical and other older branches of architecture may wish to consider purchasing second-hand copies of older editions - they're somehow nicer, and devote less space to the debased modern form of the art. (Yes, I'm biased and proud of it!:) Of a reasonable collection of architectural history books, (including several larger-format, beautifully-illustrated coffee-table books in the modern style)this book is easily my favourite. It has class, style and above all, character. Buy it!
Wow! Wow! Wow!.......1999-02-09
If there ever was a book on the history of architecture this is it! So very well documented with numerous pictures and chronologies. Wow! the mother of all architecture books-well worth the price.

An Architectural Reference Staple.......2006-01-14
If you are seriously interested in architecure then this should be a staple of your library. Whether an architecturtal student or a professional this book is a most. It it well written in the text and superbly highlighted with examples of photographs and sketches.
As a student in architectural school this was a valuable tool for studies and design ideas for projects. As a professional I would be lying if I said that I never pull it off my bookshelf.
This is not a book for simple or light reading. It is a reference book that belongs in any architectural interested person's library.
A Guru for History of Architecture........2000-05-24
As a student of Architecture, this was my guide to History of World Architecture. The illustrations are a highlight to this book. Sir Banister Fletcher talks in depth about each of the Architectures like Egyptian, Roman, Greek...to Modern Skyscrapers in terms of evolution of civilizations, Architecture, the Architects, the building materials etc.. The book is like a Guru for History of Architecture.

A great book for beginners!.......1999-12-19
I enjoyed this book. It spent two pages on every topic that's important to beginning artists. It never rambled on about useless, trivial information. The author focused in on clear definitions and illustrations. This reader was never confused by the book's precise method in handling complicated exercises. These exercises not only explained the material, but also led to completed works of art. The book also had a small, but vital glossary. The glossary helped to reiterate important concepts, such as scumbling, aerial perspective, fat-over-lean painting and high-key colors (just to name a few). Reading this book is like taking an art class. It focuses in on the most important concepts; and, it explains them in a brief, succinct manner.
Nice idea spoiled by carelessness.......1999-11-29
My soft-cover version of this highly-attractive book has plenty of nice features. The overall concept is sound, (although a little cursory in places, even for a book aimed at beginners); the instructional and informational content is generally useful and interesting; the illustrations and reproductions are excellent. There are even some health and safety tips that were very welcome.
So, what's the problem? The low rating I gave this book falls squarely at the feet of the editor(s). Simply put, there are far too many mistakes for a book of this size!
Completely wrong labels on a graph of oil content in paints makes for total confusion, especially if you're trying to come to terms with the "fat over lean" concept or similar technical ideas. Page cross-references that are incorrect are frustrating, but tolerable, in a monthly magazine or daily newspaper, but not in a textbook! There are numerous other little labelling, spelling, word-usage and grammatical errors, as well as a couple of invented words ("sawned off" is going to stick in my memory for a long time!) and a few "explanations" that don't explain anything.
I'm not sorry I bought the book, but it would be so much easier for my wife, who is just starting out in oil painting, and who is not a native user of English, if the information were a bit more reliable.
I purchased another Ray Smith book [Portraits, hardcover] and have no real criticisms of that book. I would consider buying others in the series, but this one is a little disappointing. A very beautiful book spoiled by sloppy editing. It's really a shame!
Really lays out the basics well.......1999-08-16
This is the kind of book that organizes the information you need to know in a logical and straight-forward manner. A great place to start for any aspiring artist.

An excellent atmospheric Hellboy romp, as usual. For a concept or even character design when you first see it, somehow it works. It looks ridiculous, sounds like it would be silly, but it is not. Hellboy is exactly the kind of guy you would love to buy a beer for (hopefully out of range of any monsters). Mignola's style just fits.

The worm crawls in..........2005-04-02
The last collection(for now..sigh) ends with a big bang as Mike Mignola continues to delve into the history of those pesky nazis. As Indiana Jones would say,I hate those guys! Just as Steven Spielberg understands and honors all those pulp stories in his Indiana Jones movies(along with another guy who understands the pulps, George Lucas) Mr. Mignola brings out Lobster Johnson! to combat the Nazi nastiness! If all comics were even a quarter this well produced I'd be broke! Good news for Hellboy fans, the fun continues in Weird Tales and B.R.P.D!

The latest instalment in one of the best comic series currently being produced (if not ever produced), Mignolia's Conquorer Worm is everything fun about comics and fiction in general. We got your Lovecraft, your Pulp Heroes, dark castles, cyborg monkies and Nazis. Oh my.
Proving that comics can be atmospherically dark and still fun, our federally funded big demon lug continues on his journey of self discovery and finding bizarre creatures to punch in the face. Great if read in sequence with the rest of the series but also stand on its own two feet, Conqueror Worm can not be spoken of highly enough in my opinion.
It is almost impossible to find another comic book, or any other book for that matter, quite like it, and by the end of this particular yarn, you'll be wishing for more Lobster Johnson.
Buy this book now. Buy two of them.
Pretty Nifty.......2003-06-05
Mike Mignola does it again with Conqueror Worm. This collection brings together some of Mignola's best work to date. Unfortunately I must say that this looks like a fitting end to the Hellboy series for the time being. I say unfortunately because I am a big fan of the Hellboy series, and while this book is an excellent read, it only whets the appetite for more Mignola. Sigh. That being said, this book is a great read and an important addition to the Hellboy library. Definitely worth the asking price boys and girls.
the tragedy "Man," And its hero the Conqueror Worm.......2003-03-28
Mike Magnolia brings it all together, all of the creepy bits, the folklore, the boggles and ghosts, Christ and the Devil, Lovecraft and Poe, he gathers all of the elements that make this kind of fiction wonderful, and binds them in the world of Hellboy. Anyone who enjoys the wierd fiction/folklore horror genre will enjoy Hellboy.
"Conqueror Worm" has all of the elements of a great Hellboy story. Mystical Nazi's seek to contact things from "beyond," who wait for mankind's destruction. If this sounds familiar, then you will probably like Hellboy. Newer characters, in the form of Roger the Homunculus and Lobster Johnston are developed, and become an interesting part of the Hellboy mythos rather than side players.
The art is amazing, as usual. Magnolia refines his style with each Hellboy release. As always, the TPB offers new material and is superior to the monthly comic release. The entire Hellboy library is as worth owning as the complete works of Poe or Lovecraft. "Conqueror Worm" is a necessary edition.
Mikey's Lovecraftian Playpen (O that Yummy Darkness).......2002-03-08
Anything Mignola does these days, especially anything having to do with Hellboy, drips Lovecraft. The Conqueror Worm, though borrowing from Poe and a few others as well, is no exception to the Lovecraftian rule. You can see this in the way Mikey has managed to prefect his style, in everything from the foreboding ways he drips shadows into pictures to the means by which he manages to places something sinister within each and every storyline.
This newest edition introduces everyone's favorite antagonists, the occult driven Nazis, in their newest attempt at subordinating the world. Sixty years ago, the Nazis launched a mission into space to contact beings in space that "wait to celebrate the downfall of man." Somehow communication was established and a deal was struck, and now it returns as the doom of man - the Conqueror Worm. Certain nemesis's to BPRD's plights return for this story, plus Hellboy comes with his friend Roger the Homunculus, developing a tale that continues in the proudly readable Hellboy tradition.
Also, this TPB edition has an epilogue added to it, one that brings a semi-conclusion to events that have been transpiring for some time now. Coupling this with the fact that the transfer from comic to TPB brought about a more defined, crisply darker feeling, I'd have to recommend it for consumption by old fans and new ones alike (just try to read them in order).
