Book Description

From skyscrapers to parking structures, from the Stock Exchange to the historic townhouses of Harlem, the buildings of New York are as diverse as its culture. The City estimates that there are 90,000 buildings within the five boroughs, ranging from single-story warehouses to mighty skyscrapers. Now, for the first time, 1,000 of these buildings, widely varied in style-from landmarks to architectural oddities to humble utilitarian structures-are artfully photographed and beautifully celebrated. Photographer Jorg Brockmann has captured the power and personal essence of each building, providing a fresh, close-up view of New York unlike any other.

Essential information about each building, along with neighborhood maps and useful sidebars, make this the last word on New York structures large and small. It's a feast for lovers of architecture and of great photography, as well as devotees of the most vibrant and resilient city in the world.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent companion volume to White & Willensky.......2007-03-18

The title might have been 1,000 of the BEST buildings in New York City. No city in America, and few the world over, contain the mind-boggling ensemble of outstanding urban architecture, both historic and modern, as does New York City. This city is a national and world treasure, and all of Manhattan SHOULD be a UNESCO World Heritage site, but, alas... There's simply no comparison possible. This book is a survey of 1,000 outstanding structures in the city, properly chosen in my opinion, each including a black & white photograph and short descriptive essay. With so much wonderful material from which to choose, the book is a real feast of architectural goodness! Because it isn't as exhaustive as White & Willensky, it is more thorough in coverage of the selected buildings. It's well put together. Good buildings. Nice photography. Well written short essays. Covers the five boroughs well.

America's peninsular cities; San Francisco, New York, Charleston and Boston also happen to contain the best architecture. Hmm...

5 out of 5 stars Go out and wander around New York.......2007-01-11

and come back and sit and look at this book.

Bet you missed a lot on each street.

Then go out again and do it all over.

A real treat.

5 out of 5 stars As solid and beautiful as the buildings they describe.......2006-05-18

Every once in a while I'll walk down a street of my busy city and spot a building that I'd never seen before, or, if I had seen it, never paid it much mind. But something about it--its age or its architecture--tells me that there's a story to be told about it. Judith Dupre, Bill Harris, and photographer Jorg Brockmann in their monumental book, "One Thousand New York Buildings", fill in the gaps left behind in the AIA books.

There are hundreds of buildings that, for whatever reason, have escaped landmark status and/or the attention of New Yorkers. Although "One Thousand New York Buildings" does discuss the familiar structures, like the Empire State Building, the Woolworth Building, and Grand Central Station, it also devotes equal time to those that have been ignored or overlooked. What are those tiny, Colonial style houses on Harrison and Greenwich Streets? How old is that building at 2 White Street? Who lived in those somber buildings at 130-132 MacDougal Street? "One Thousand New York Buildings" answers these and hundreds of other questions. In this sense, this book is much like "New York Streetscapes: Tales of Manhattan's Significant Buidlings and Landmarks" by Christopher Gray and Suzanne Braley, in as much as it pays equal tribute to the famous and not so famous structures.

One last note, this is a solidly put together book. The binding is sturdy, the paper thick and glossy, and the photos are clear and intriguing. It as well constructed as the buildings they pay homage to.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive to say the least.......2005-12-17

This book is fascinating, New York City is so blessed with amazing buildings, and this book is about as thorough as you can get. I found the synopsis of each building quite interesting, I mean the author could not exactly go indepth on each building, but he gave just enough for you to understand the significance in its inclusion. The B&W photos are nice and I appreciate that every building covered comes with requisite photo, that is so important in books of this type, no matter how well a building is discribed it just can rarely compare with an actual image. I recommend this book to anyone with any interst in New York or just fine buildings.

5 out of 5 stars A 'pictionary' of New York's varied architectural styles.......2005-06-07

Fans of New York City and its architecture won't want to miss the lovely photos and celebration of the city's diversity in One Thousand New York Buildings. Here's a 'pictionary' of New York's varied architectural styles, along with histories and trivia to accompany photography Jorg Brockmann's lovely black and white shots. From retail stores and theatres to Italian villas, cottages and more, each architectural piece includes a short note on the firm or designer. A 'must' for fans of architecture in general and New York City in particular.

5 out of 5 stars A tiny treasure you can take anywhere.......2000-06-03

The Tiny Folio series is simply wonderful! As a frequent traveler who loves to discuss (share) art, I make it a habit to bring these miniature art books with me whenever I can.

This version showcases the Art Institute's well known pieces. Included are works from John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassat, Toulouse-Latrec, Gauguin, Monet, Van Gogh, Renoir, Pissarro, Degas, and Suerat (A Sunday on La Grande Jatte).

Okay, that's a long list, but it's just a sample of what's inside!

The book offers a delightful mix of styles, concluding with Warhol, Mondrian, Lichtenstein and Pollock.

The pictures are, of course, quite small, but the book is too! That's what makes it so lovely! It can go anywhere. And never have I seen a better representation of such a variety of artists at such an inexpensive price.

(And, this is a book you can let the smallest toddler look at! It's just right for little hands!)

4 out of 5 stars Excellent primer on the world's richest art collection........2004-06-14

Housing a majestic collection of nearly 300,000 works of art, only a fraction of which are on display at any one time, no book, no matter its size, can ever come close to actually visiting the Musée du Louvre itself. In that regard, this book is no different.
Where this comprehensive book, written by the museum's director, excels other visual guides of its kind is in both the assortment of the works it presents and in its easy-to-browse organization.
Printed in high-quality plates on semi-glossy paper, and bound in a sturdy, pocket-sized format, this little volume superbly reproduces nearly 400 of the museum's most renowned masterpieces. For each item, its name, author, place of origin, date of creation, materials and dimensions is indicated, and the pieces are chronologically arranged into seven distinct sections, according to the museum's own classification system:
      *Oriental Antiquities
      *Egyptian Antiquities
      *Greek, Etruscan, and Roman Antiquities
      *Decorative Arts
      *Sculpture
      *European Paintings
      *Drawings
As a bonus, a brief look at the museum's history is offered in the Preface and, for fast check-ups, an Index of Illustrations is provided at the back.
For those who have already visited the museum this book is a first-class visual reminder of what you have seen, and for those who have never been to it, it gives a tantalizing glimpse of this vast and remarkable treasure.
      Enjoy!

This is a light coffee table book that provides a kind of greatest hits list of the collection. A collection that is so big no one single book would really do it justice. Overall I think this book does a fine job at its purpose, which is to provide you a little history and meaning on some selected works. This book is almost akin to a travel memento picture book. The book for me reminds me to always stop by the Museum when I am in Paris

        Book Description

A miniature guide through one of the country's most important collections of American art.

The Addison Gallery of American Art, located at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, is internationally recognized for its outstanding collection of paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, and photography. When its founder, Thomas Cochran, opened the Addison to the public in 1931, it was one of the few museums in this country devoted solely to American art. Cochran initially donated four hundred significant works of art, commissioned a building, and provided generous endowments. Today the holdings total over 12,000 objects that span the history of American art from the seventeenth century to the present.

Among the some 240 notable examples from the collection included in this tiny tour are paintings from the eighteenth century by Gilbert Stuart and John Singleton Copley; from the nineteenth century by Thomas Eakins, Winslow Homer, James McNeill Whistler, John Singer Sargent, and F. Childe Hassam; and from the early twentieth century by John Sloan, Georgia O'Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, and Andrew Wyeth; and contemporary works by Frank Stella, Sol Lewitt, and Brice Marden. Also featured here are images from such masters of photography as Walker Evans, Eadward Muybridge, Berenice Abbott, and Robert Frank. In addition, there are outstanding works of sculpture from Paul Manship and Elie Nadelman to Alexander Calder and Martin Puryear.

        Other Details: 240 full-color illustrations. 4 x 4 1/2" trim size. Published 2002.

Adobe Premiere 6.0 is an impressive upgrade to a venerable digital video editing application, offering more professional features than ever. It can be intimidating for a novice, but Premiere 6: Visual QuickStart Guide for Macintosh and Windows eases the learning curve and helps new users get a handle on how Premiere works and how far it can take them.

Like other books in the Visual QuickStart series, this book is physically smaller and lighter than many computer books, which helps make it friendly and approachable. Every chapter is laid out in a clear two-column format, one for text and one for screen shots, and each tutorial is written in an easy-to-follow step-by-step format. (For a new user learning the basics of a program, there is no better series of books.)

The upgrade from Premiere 4 to Premiere 5 was a major leap, and not without problems. The transition from version 5 to 6 was much easier--the interface hasn't changed much, many features have been fixed, improved, and new features added, and the feel of the program overall is much more solid. Because there are fewer features that are entirely new and more aspects of the program have been improved and made more robust, the book is free to teach about not only the basics of Premiere 6, but also editing (chapters 4 through 7), using the title tool (chapter 12), using effects and motion settings (chapters 9, 11, and 14), and audio mixing (chapter 10).

Premiere 6: Visual QuickStart Guide for Macintosh and Windows makes learning this powerful tool seem more manageable. Hollywood may not be ready for your feature film, but at least you'll be ready for Hollywood. --Mike Caputo

1 out of 5 stars Unavailing and seemingly deliberately complex.......2002-10-19

As another reviewer said, the structure is not logical, e.g., capturing video is at the end of the book, when it needs to be at the beginning. The author steadfastly recommends using the single-track, rather than the far more intuitive and simple-to-use A/B roll method of editing, forgetting that anyone buying a beginner's book on Premiere is just that...a beginner! Why not make it as easy as possible? His approach offers no real advantage. Further, the "visual" aspect is not sufficiently helpful, and the short descriptions create 2 new questions in the reader's head for every 1 new concept covered. Do not buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Gets in-depth "enough", yet easy enough for beginners.......2002-09-03

I bought this book mainly because of the price, yet I was not disappointed by the content. I'm interested on getting a handle on the basics (just bought a new DV cam). This book covers that very well. Things are laid out clearly and concisely with lots of pictures. However, it goes beyond being solely for complete beginners and includes slightly more advanced topics.

3 out of 5 stars Adequate not great.......2002-08-23

The organizational structure is not as logical as it could be, for example, capturing video is at the end of the book. Not great for a "hands on" manual. It did not seem to offer any great advantage over the Adobe manual. Repeats really simple concepts (how many times does anyone who has used Windows or Mac need "drag and drop" explained in elaborate detail, whether related to moving or copying video clips, audio clips, or files) at the expense of other essential concepts.

                3 out of 5 stars "Visual Quickstart?" - I don't think so!!!!.......2002-08-23

Peachpit must define "quick" completely differently than the rest of us. "Up & running in no time"...I don't think so. This somewhat overwritten volume is strictly for reference. P6 is an extremely complicated program, especially for newbies, and the Bolante book will be a bit of a disappointment (given its title and accompanying hyperbole), to those who expect some sort of how-to-do-it.
However, because of P6's myriad of features and capabilities, and given the Adobe User Guide has carefully avoided graphical displays as much as possible, (a little ironic?), Bolante's tome is currently serving as a concise reminder of picune chores that P6 demands. Why can't these software geniuses get it right for a change?

4 out of 5 stars No Book can be Perfect - but this one comes close.......2002-02-10

I read all the reviews here on Amazon-- and I know that they were very extreme- I teach webdesign programs... Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver etc. I find that Visual QuickStart books (and this one is no exception) are the best in the market... try reading Adobe Premierer's class room in a book- and then get back to me- Talk about filler words and useless reading!

Maybe someone will write a Premiere 1-2-3 book... till then, this is the best book you can get!

                Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars good writing, bad mystery.......2004-03-09

I liked the nice English countryside locale and the characters are interesting and well-drawn, but I could literally tell from page 20 who the killer was. The clues are super clunky. I kept reading it because I think the writing is nice and the world was very cozy, as has been said, not hard boiled at all. But if you want a satisfying, stumping mystery, this is not the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars The epitome of a British cosy, perhaps a deliberate pastiche.......2000-02-16

No sex and only the barest necessary minimum of violence. Nothing about the social problems of our age, except a hint of religious controvery about a vicar who uses the old style prayerbook. Lots of old British theatre (?theater) lore. The author was an associate of Barbara Pym and it's that type of world. Sort of updated Agatha Christie, although not up to Agatha Christie's standards of plotting. It won't make you think or change your life - just enjoy a few hours.

4 out of 5 stars Mrs. Malory and the Only Good Lawyer.......1998-02-04

Fun, well written, easy to read. Mrs. Malory is thoroughly likable. It's a treat to be in her world for a few hours.

5 out of 5 stars A fun and witty cozy.......1997-12-02

The late Peter Malory first met fellow solicitor Graham Percy in law school. The compassionate Peter could never refuse his fussy old school mate when Graham would weasel an invitation out of him to come visit. Now that Peter is dead, his spouse Sheila has inherited Graham's annual visit to her home in Taviscombe. Several days into his four day stay, Graham is murdered and Sheila, feeling responsible for the well being of a guest, decides to investigate.

She immediately learns that there was a bit more to Graham than a failed and boring attorney. It seems he had a very lucrative blackmailing scheme operating on the side. She also learns that the odd duck annually visited three other school chums. Sheila figures they are primes suspects. A second murder in town has Sheila picking up the pace in an effort to uncover the identity of the killer before someone else is hurt.

MRS. MALORY AND THE ONLY GOOD LAWYER, the eighth novel in the Mrs. Sheila Malory series, is a well written English cozy, highlighted by the charming lead protagonist. However, though the story line quickly moves forward, the audince is going to find the ending a bit abrubt because no clues for motives occur until the final explanation. Still, Hazel Holt scribes a fabulous mystery that will please fans of the series.
