Not a lot of creativity.......2003-03-28
I have the restaurants and hotels book, a portfolio of 40 designers( which is recommend), and thought that this one would be good too. There are a few good photos in it but most are a little outdated and old. not a whole lot of creativity being shown.

Inspiring.......2004-08-07
With elegant illustrations, Cathy Yow shows us just how abundant Mother Earth really is. Your creative spirit will soar and the possibilities are endless. Beans, bones, shells and sticks become beautiful, one of a kind pieces. The projects require a bit more work than traditional beadwork, but the most complicated tool required is a drill or dremel. Many of the projects could be completed by children with adult supervision and would be quite educational. I found a project that I could easily complete with shells that I already have an abundance of the first time I looked through it. If you make jewelry to sell, you will be inspired to create true one of a kind pieces. If you don't have an interest in making jewelry, this is a wonderful coffee table book and would be a valuable addition to any public or school library. Highly recommended.
Unique and Full of Ideas.......2004-07-16
I feel guilty for not donating this book to my public library! Cathy Yow has filled this work with beautiful illustrations and fantastic ideas for unique, one of a kind pieces that reflect the abundance of nature. She even includes instructions for making jewelry from ten bean soup mix! Instructions are simple and easy to understand, even for the beginner. Standard jewelry making tools are used for most projects. A drill or dremel is required for many. An absolute treasure to own and a highly valuable book for those who sell their jewelry and want to offer something out of the ordinary.
Jewelry from Nature.......2000-04-22
Cathy gives us "45 great projects using sticks and stones, seeds and bones." The next time you go to eat fried chicken, save the bones! Cathy has a great use for them, as indeed she has for many other natural materials. Here is a partial list:
Corn, Rudraksha seed, Snuffbox bean, Candlenuts, Sea Heart, Green seashells, Bedouin clove, Rose petals, Olive wood, Bamboo, Beetle wing, Tagua nut, Snake vertebrae, Mescal bean, Chinaberry, Beach glass
Just look around your yard (grass, leaves, twigs) or check your spice rack (cloves, nutmeg seeds, bay leaves). Anything is fair game for jewelry making for Cathy.

A step beyond the basics.......2006-09-04
I'm an interior designer who collects important period 18th century French furniture. This book IS THE MOST EFFICIENT general reference to the particular periods covered and a minute step beyond the basics and generalities. For serious collectors & those who have already done their major homework - it is doubtful that you would attain additional knowledge from this book.
Great reference book on French Furniture.......2006-06-17
If you only have one reference book in your library on French Furniture, this is the one. For the beginning collector, the book provides clarification on terms and furniture types. For an appraiser, it's a great resource to help with identification of those forms which you do not see very often. There are only sketches, but they are clear, and provide very good detail. For those who simply want a better understanding of French furniture, this book is put together very well, and is easy to follow.
Consice overview for a beginner.......2005-01-26
I am new to the techniques and methodologies of identifying French furniture. This book provides a good glossary of French terms which describe the characteristics of pieces and it provides a modest description for the common pieces made in the various styles. Line drawings and sketches provide examples of the characteristics described in the text. There are no photos, but the sketches are quite good. I'm rating the book a four because I think there should be more sketches. Not all the items described are exemplified with a drawing. Otherwise, this is a great book for getting started. The content is clear and does not bog down in minutia.

Fun Viewing.......2007-05-13
I had expected more general treatment of the collectables, such as materials, form, etc., and perhaps less in the line of the Very High Priced items. Still, it is a good reference to get the general idea of Art Deco style. Great photos, and some amazing pieces in here. Couldn't beat the used price, either. (under $10.00)
Visual Reference to Art Deco Collectables.......2005-12-14
This book is devided into eight chapters: furniture, textiles; glass; ceramics; jewlery; silver and metal ware; sculpture; and posters and graphics. Each chapter opens with an introductory overview that discusses the historical background of the medium and its place in the history of Art Deco. Profiles of the most important Art Deco designers and factories are given and then followed with examples of their work. Each page is filled with beautiful photographs of Art Deco objects and 2005 estimated prices.
Many books on the history of Art Deco and Modernism profile the same iconic pieces. These are works that are mainly in museums and in the hands of very wealthy collectors. The beauty of this book is that a potential collector can get an idea of the wide range of Art Deco pieces that are still readily available to be purchased.
The term Art Deco covers a wide range of material objects and this book should not be seen as a guide to help one determine the price of particular items. This book is a general reference and it is unlikely that one will find the exact items pictured in the book.
Finally, this book is published by DK and in usual DK fashion it is jammed with beautifully photographed objects. This book is a visual pleasure.

A fine book........2000-04-12
Alistair Duncan presents us 85 of Paris's Art Deco furniture designers from the period 1910 - 1935, including Eileen Gray, Dufréne, Leleu and Ruhlmann. This fine book contains a 7 pages informative introduction with e.g. the history and material of Art Deco furniture. But also 160 pages of biographies of designers, including 244 black and white illustrations & 68 in colour of interiors and furniture, each with a description. Each designer is presented in a concise half a page review. It makes this book an indispensable guide and frame of reference to french Art Deco furniture and a nice book to have on the bookshelf.

Simple, short and to the point........2000-09-06
This book gives a short introduction to art deco, outlining its origins, and the different aspects of the style, and describes both French and non-Gallic furniture and art deco metalwork. It is very concise and does not elaborate too much on any point worth elaborating. It is full of many lavish illustrations, all in color and brings fine works by the likes of Clarice Cliff, Preiss, Clement Rousseeau, Frank Lloyd Wright and Edgar Brandt. Not something to come back to very often but nice for a one time read and a good value for the low price.

Comprehensive.......2006-02-10
This is a well written book in light of the fact there are different authors for each section. Beware that this book's focus is on Europe--there is no discussion of America or other places outside of Europe. One thing that struck me was the vastness of the furniture world. For example, Chippendale and Hepplewhite each warrant no more than a few paragraphs.
One thing that I found annoying was the focus on the pinnacle of furniture making. I am more interested in furniture owned by average folks, not the crazy over-the-top stuff of royalty. I've never had a client request a bedroom in the the style of Louis the XVI because it would take an army of craftsmen and millions of dollars to recreate the bedroom.
The book has several chapters on interiors. These discussions are nice but again, the focus is on the pinnacle of interior design.
I was disappointed about the discussion of Art Nouveau. The author, Ornella Selvafolta, spends many pages discussing painting and architecture. This discussion did not contribute to what I wanted to know--i.e. furniture design. The same thing goes for the section on Art Deco which was authored by Selvafolta also.

Book Description
Art Deco is a term used to define a period in the 1930s whereby designers applied geometric designs and machine age materials to create a futuristic look to home furnishings and decor. The close to 300 full-colour photos of furniture, coffee and tea services, bar items, radios, cigarette cases and ashtrays, and living room decor capture the feeling of this period of geometric simplicity.
Customer Reviews:
Fun little book, and very helpful.......2002-01-07
This is a fun little book. It's being little is my only complaint. For the price I would like to have had a bit more. However, it does have a lot of color photos nicely reproduced so you can really see the designs.
It has a nice mix of furniture, accessories and even appliances from that period. Books that showcase museum pieces are nice to look at but "Affordable Art Deco" is for the rest of us -- those who want to create a Deco look in our homes. The authors give an idea of what things should cost, which is very helpful. For instance, two lighted art glass cigarette stands should run $75-$150, depending on condition. I've seen the same stands at an antique store priced at $400. I thought that excessive but now I have backup.
I certainly don't regret purchasing "Affordable Art Deco" and would recommend it to anyone out there shopping for the real deal, e.g.; Not just looking at it in a museum.
Book Description
Electrical lighting fixtures from the 1920s through 1940s reflect the popular taste for Art Deco styling in public, commercial, and home interiors. Beautiful color photographs of dramatic lights from theaters, important houses, great architects, and interior designers fill this stunning book, showing the great flair for which the period has become so famous. Fixtures shown include radio and accent lamps, boudoir lamps, wall sconces, ceiling fixtures, bridge lamps, torchieres, and smoking stands. Glass shades from the period are highly prized today for their diverse and exquisite designs. This book will be a constant reference for architects, designers, lighting collectors, dealers, and theater historians because it shows so many diverse examples, relates their specific details clearly, and includes values in todays competitive marketplace.
Customer Reviews:
You light up my life..........2007-03-08
I can never get enough of this deco stuff. Another great book that makes a collector drool over the different lamps that were made during that era. Unfortunately, most of the lamps are out of the price range of your average collectors. However, if one keeps an eye out on auction websites, you might get a lucky find. For a serious collector or one who dabbles now and then into the deco world, this book is a great find.
No Coffee Table Should Be Without..........2003-06-21
Millman's book presents a wide variety of Art Deco lamps, sconces and chandeliers. The photography is superb and beautifully highlights these grand fixtures of a time gone by. While some may only be interested in the Frankarts & Nuarts, this book offers a wide variety of lighting that may still be accessible to those priced out of that extreme high end market. As a diverse collector myself, I can truly appreciate the vast range of lighting, American & European, illustrated in this book and recommend it highly to all interested in the Art Deco era.
Beautiful book but little substance.......2002-11-30
I must say that I was greatly anticipating this book and had preordered the book. I have been to the author's store in New Hope and, although very pricey, had thought the store offered a good selection of Art Deco Lighting, including items made by Frankart, Nuart and Ronson. I was deeply disappointed when I received the book and found no Frankarts -- often viewed by collectors of American Art Deco as some of the best lamps made during the period and highly collectible -- with a few mediocre Nuart lamps pictured. The book is beautifully photographed and very clearly is a labor of love. It is just a great shame that there is little real substance included in the book to give a good overview to those who either truly collect, or are learning more about how and what to collect, lamps from the Deco period. I hope some other author provides a better offering the future.

Book Description
"The style you want--at the price you want to pay!" From 1930 to 1942, such advertising slogans drew cash-strapped Depression consumers to the Chase Brass & Copper Co.'s attractive array of lamps and lighting fixtures. Heralded as "brilliant in style and authentic in design," the Chase line presented a new concept in brightening the American home, as designed by modern industrial pioneers, including Lurelle Guild, Walter Von Nessen, the Gerths, and Harry Laylon. Chromium, brass, and copper fixtures appear in hundreds of current, catalog, and historic photographs (many in color), vintage advertising, a complete cross-reference listing, price guide, and index. Admirers of twentieth-century decorative arts will enjoy this in-depth look at "lights that give lasting satisfaction."
Customer Reviews:
Collector's Paradise!.......2001-07-24
This is an exciting book for collecters who are familiar with the wide range of Chase products as well as those just being introduced to these beautiful lamps! My mother began to collect when no one recognized these pieces for their style and beauty - monetary considerations aside. This book juxtaposes the actual lamps with pages from the original Chase catalogs. The design detail and the artist's sketches are a wonderful benefit to designers. A great companion volume to Chase Complete! A real joy to read and study.
