I would suggest you skip this one...the binding fell apart and the text, and quite frankly the houses, are just not that interesting.

I ordered this book hoping to get a compilation of good minimalist architecture. What I received was a selection of a few very good projects amidst a lot of mediocre architecture. Minimalism is a catch all word...just because a house has white walls and a lot of glass does not make it 'minimal'. I expected much more analysis and critique than what is written.

In terms of the book itself: There are some very good images and photography with help to offset the bad choice of font and standard layout.

I would recommend this book as a good coffee table book, but nothing more than that.

The book itself is well done. The pictures are plenty and of high quality. The somewhat limited amount of text deals mainly with concept and layout and not so much with construction techniques and materials. Twenty-three houses from around the world are featured.

I've never seen a book repeat so many of its images. Page after page of the same photos repeated over and over. I wasn't expecting that. The book is just okay. Nothing really new.

I am very picky at buying books because of the high shipping costs to South America, sometimes as high as the cost of a book.
I purchased Direct Stone Sculpture because it was well praised at an art forum by highly renowned artists. After reading the book, I must say that I fully agree with them. It is worth reading and enjoying the photographs of many works. It teaches carving and use of carving tools.
I am not only learning to sculpt but also appreciating art made by great "stoners" at the Sculpture Gallery of the book.
The book has many photographs of the carving process, and shows detailed views of many hand and power tools that I found useful.
I think this book should have a special place at any home library even at non carvers' shelves.

Direct Stone Sculpture.......2006-11-19

After reading the two previous reviews, I purchased this book on sculpture and was surprised to find that "soapstone" carving was dismissed from the very beginning of the book. Liebson makes clear that he does not even allow "soapstone" in his classroom--on the grounds that (his opinion)it is dangerous to the sculpter's health, and also crumbles when worked.
Since I am new to sculpture, this was disappointing because "soapstone" was the only material I had worked with, and hoped this book was going to give me some valuable advise. Beyond Liebson's dismisal of "soapstone" the book is everything that those other reviews said it was. Tools, methods and merchandising are all covered with ample illustrations. I hope to take full advantage of Liebson's valuable lessons once I have graduated up to limestone and the like.

Indispensible.......2002-10-01

Every sculptor should own this book, and it's really the only one you need. Meilach's volume makes a good supplement, but really that's all it is; Liebson's book easily stands on it's own as the standard reference.

Why? Almost the entire book is devoted to the craft and mechanics of carving stone. Liebson looks like someone's dad, and writes like it, too -- this book eschews all discussion of "art" in favor of simple, practical advice on "how to do it." From selecting a stone and tools to using and caring for those tools to finishing, polishing, mounting, and displaying your sculpture, even to gaining exhibitions and marketing your work, Liebson covers absolutely everything you need to know to get started, and to keep going. I've been carving for over five years now, and I still refer constantly to this book.

This book has aroused in me a great deal of enthuiasm for the process of shaping stone and the creation of art forms out of stone. Liebson is an authority on the subject and he writes extremely well. Manufacturers and suppliers of tools and stone are listed in an index. A list of recommended tools is provided as well as a fairly comprehensive description of how to best utilize these tools. The photographs are interesting and informative. An inspirational book. Of the three books on stone sculpture which I've read, this is by far the best.

Excellent Book.......2002-08-09

"Listen to the Trees" is some of the most beautiful photography I've ever seen. While he worked with Ansel Adams and chose similar subjects and locations (aspens, Yosemite, etc.) he has a very distinct vision... a very powerful one at that. I'd say there's a more "romantic" conception - in the musical or literary sense - in Sexton photographs in contrast to Ansel Adams more formalist approach. Some of Sexton's photo's might even be called "gothic" in that literary sense. The photography is technically virtuosic and dazzlingly so. It makes me want to buy a view camera and head out to the woods every time I look at this book. I look a this book often and share it with anybody who would care to look at it. Worth every penny.

I LOVE IT! This book is absolutely amazing. My all time favorite. The prints are amazing. I love these prints almost more then those of Ansel Adams. I dare to say John will be held up next to Ansel not too far down the road. This book shows why I feel this way. The work is . . . undescribable! The next step beyond the "Zone System."

Excellent Large Format B&W photographs of Aspens, trees.......1998-08-06

Well printed on glossy paper, this book contains pictures of Aspens, Redwoods, Cottonwoods, etc. in grand locations like Yosemite, Zion, and others, all done using 4x5 camera (with notes on lenses and film used). Some pictures are tack sharp and contrasty, seeing the new white buds on fir trees, or white star-like leaves behind a black stream. Some are eerily grey, or shot on misty mornings. Nice to see a collection on one topic and using the large format negative. Could use even more pictures, or a "Listen to Trees" in color, but a great inspiration for nature photographers and black and white dark-room enthusiasts. Great coffee table book too!

This is a wondeful book that I never tire of reading over and over again. I read this book when I was a very young girl and I must say that after all these years I still enjoy this book immensley. Marvina "Muffin" Johnson is a blind, African American teenager not only coping with blindness, but more importantly coping with the death of her father who she loved dearly, and coping with a mother " Leola" who is loosing herself in drink and despair over the death of her husband. But despite blindness and grief " Muffin" has the love and support of neighbors " Mr Dale," " Mr Willie Williams," "Tank" " Miss Geneva", a friend "Deeta", and a love interest "Ernie" who all embrace "Muffin" during her many times of need. The author Sharon Bell Mathis has created a intricate world of sight and sounds that transforms the reader into a place and time that is so passionate, so intense, and so very real that the reader is longing to know what will happen long after the last page has been read. What a wonderful little book. A very satisfied reader.

Nothing happened the entire book. When something did happen it was so badly described that it seemed like nothing was happening. The characters were not thought out and were undeveloped. I would reccomend this book to anyone who wants to fall asleep.

The contents of this book had a tremendous affect on my early years. I read this book at a very early age and I can recall being encouraged by it's contents. I would recommend that all young people being challenged with life read this book. The fact that she was blind was overshadowed by the true challenges in her life. Alcholism, abuse, death, etc..... Excellent account blind teenager in inner city stress.......1996-08-09

This is a powerfully written book that treats the young heroine's blindness unsentimentally and believably as she deals with her father's violent death, her mother's drinking, an attempted sexual assault by an older neighbor and her budding relationship with a young man. This is a thoroughly outstanding treatment that will inform readers of any age about blindness, while treating the blindness as simply a fact of her life as she deals with the real and wrenching issues pulling at her. The love for her mother and the tension with her drinking are well handled, and the boy-girl aspect is also not over-romanticised. (Wish we had a sequel about them.

Not only does he use colloquialisms to locate the characters very specifically, but he brings verbs, nouns, and adjectives to sparkling life by allowing them to change places at will. The butter churn is a "druidic dark drum" that comes "Sundaying into life." On the day after Minnie's wedding, the "morning songed the reading of the streets." Even a description of a sleeping baby erupts into Joycean music:

Breathing soundlessly, the baby slept as though he had been there since the house was built. Waves of tenderness winked from her immaculate eyes as she facted where her baby but slept away his drabness.... His minutes were building into hours and his plumbed hours were nearing that transom hour, that bragging hour, when he might bubble burst just to hymn his daylong lifetime.

Nolan's alliterations and galloping hyphenation evoke not only Joyce but the whimsical beauty of Gerard Manley Hopkins. And like Hopkins, he can sometimes overindulge his penchant for verbal shenanigans. But while the author's circumlocutions may clog the narrative from time to time, The Banyan Tree nonetheless works up to a moving climax, and offers a surfeit of linguistic riches along the way. --Cherry Smyth

I am interested in reading books by modern day Irish authors, and I did not regret having selected Christopher Nolan's book. What got me interested was in learning that the author is physically challenged, but Mr. Nolan is a literary genius.

There might be some inaccuracies in the time and the dates in the story line, but with the prose, and literary style of Mr. Nolan, the reader floats through this wonderful book.

I read this brilliant novel thanks to an Amazon friend, entirely unfamiliar with this gifted author. From the first page, I willingly immersed my imagination in his uncommon phrasing and particular eye for description, where the ordinary becomes extraordinary and the plain beautiful. A simple tale of a mother's last years of widowhood and patient wait for worldly release becomes a transforming journey through the corridors of her soul, one not unlike the hidden beauty of my own mother's heart, perhaps, eventually, even of mine. For Minnie O'Brien is, at the core, the essence of motherhood at its most elemental and complex. We learn of her marriage and children through a loving wife and mother's eyes, she who remembers those precious childhood moments, when such sweet intimacy can pierce a heart with pain and joy in equal measure.

Nolan wants you to slow down and savor life, so why don't you do it? Ah, heaven defend us from these latter-day puritans who want nothing but the facts!

A wonderful story ruined by the author's constant attempts to come up with original and oh-so-clever descriptions (which in my opinion is the case with many poems). A few such sentences sprinkled throughout the book could have been tolerated, but practically every paragraph was just too much.
