Book Description
We have tirelessly traveled through the countrysides of Sweden, Ireland, England, Holland, France, Greece, Tuscany, Majorca, and Greece in search of the best examples of rural homes that reflect the tradition and culture of their inhabitants. Many inspirational TASCHEN books have been born from these excursions, but this one is the first to combine examples from all of the different countries we have explored. In 400 pages of luxurious photographs, including details and descriptions, this new book affords fans of country living all the inspiration and diversity they could desire.
Book Description
In his bestselling Every Farm Tells a Story, Jerry Apps brought color and detail to the dreams so many of us have of simple rural life. Here, in his signature style, he spins warm-hearted tales about growing up on a Midwestern dairy farm in the 1940s--stories that make his country year our own.
Wearing his hard-earned wisdom lightly, Apps tells a tale for each month of the year in the heart of the country, and adds aphorisms and the occasional recipe for good measure. We skate with him on a frozen pond on a moonlit night. We watch him drive the hired man’s Model T touring car at the age of 10, recover from polio by driving a tractor during disking season, and learn to ride bareback on a pony named Ginger. Whether shooting off firecrackers on the Fourth of July or suffering through “potato vacation” or overcoming stage fright at the annual Christmas program, Apps is a delightful companion, teaching us a gentle lesson as he learns. By turns witty and profound, his book reaffirms our nation’s rural heritage.

Book Description
Introduce children to the magic of using herbs for healing, cooking, and nature crafts and inspire a lifelong interest in the natural world.
• Designed especially for children ages five to ten.
• A hands-on book for children, filled with fun, easy-to-follow activities.
Walking the World in Wonder covers the medicinal and magical uses of sixty-seven common herbs. Each herb playfully introduces itself and talks about its habitat and many uses. With fun, easy-to-follow activities, herbalist Ellen Evert Hopman teaches children basic herbal skills and invites them to make a sunflower seed mosaic, sew a catnip-filled mouse, and dig for Jerusalem artichoke roots. The book also includes simple recipes that children can use, with adult supervision, to treat minor ailments--peppermint tea to soothe a troubled tummy or horse chestnut salve to heal a scraped knee. Children gain a sense of self-sufficiency and awe for the earth's treasures by eating wild nettle greens, sprinkling a sandwich with nasturtium flowers, making strawberry honey, and learning to season food with dill they've gathered themselves. Parents and teachers will appreciate how these earth-centered activities are placed within a broader social and environmental context. Sixty-seven full-color photographs enable children, parents, and teachers to identify these herbs during walks and field trips. Walking the World in Wonder gives children a direct and joyous experience of their connection to the natural world and inspires a lifelong interest in their own health and that of the planet.

Lovely.......2007-08-14
I really love this book. It has real photos of the plants making them easy to identify. Gives a nice amount of informations and something you can do with each plant. Plus which season to find the plant in!

A Must Have Book!.......2004-06-10
This is definitely a must have book for any family who does herbal medicine- Pagan or not! I was so excited to see the Wheel of the Year described. Each description is in very easy to read language for the children, yet offers valuable information. Plainly put, the author trusts the children's intelligence, and doesn't dumb it down for them. Many simple recipes for remedies and treats are included in the descriptions, as well as lore. My only problem with this book is that there aren't more pictures of each plant in various stages. Some of the pictures offer only a flowering shot of the arial parts. Still, with a parent's help the children will have no problem seeing that they are indeed the plants from the book. The pictures offered are full page beautiful shots. So, it's not really much of a complaint- more of a suggestion in case there are any future editions. :) BUY THIS BOOK!
Perfect First Herbal for a Child.......2003-10-29
The author begins with some good information on practices of collecting, use and identification, and then proceeds with a nice introduction to the Wheel of the Year complete with the popular festival names (Samhain, Yule, etc.)
My kids (boys, ages 5 and 8) love the full-color illustrations of easy-to-find herbs. This is truly written to be used by a child (though adults will find it enchanting as well) which is exactly what I needed. I have plenty of my own adult versions of herbals and wanted something that my children could call their own and use on their own.
An interesting twist is the organization of the herbs. The herbs are grouped into four seasons, the season they would most commonly be found, and the chapters begin with Autumn, the start of the Wheel of the Year. Living in Florida, we are less likely to be finding that exactly useful; but we do enjoy seeing how they are usually found in the more northern areas of the nation and will enjoy that feature on our travels to visit family.
Medicinal and magical uses of over sixty common herbs.......2001-05-28
Kids ages 5-10 and their parents will find Walking The World In Wonder an inviting survey of the medicinal and magical uses of over sixty common herbs. Each herb introduces itself and talks about its uses, with activities reinforcing the lessons on basic herbal skills, along with simple recipes kids can use.
Another bit of Magick from Ellen Evert Hopman!.......2000-10-27
This book is a delight for children of ALL age! For those just exploring the magical world of nature to those young at heart. The beautiful photography and illustrations along with the wondrous style of writing is enchanting. This is a marvelous addition to any library, full of information from the practical and medicinal uses of herbs to a beautiful introduction to the wheel of the year and cycles of nature, with glimpses into ancient folklore of various cultures.

Book Description
Jeanine McMullen was a BBC producer in London when she went to Wales on assignment. There she fell in love--with Wales, its people, and most of all with the farm that on impulse she decided to buy.
"Magical writing about animals and the country scene with glorious, gusting humor. I loved every word. Jeanine McMullen's book is absorbing, touching and funny and I found something inspiring in her zestful acceptance of life." --James Herriot

Finally, someone to fill James Herriot's Wellingtons!.......1998-11-19
I found this book in a tiny bookshop in San Francisco and bought it as a present for my husband. On the flight home I opened it and was immediately enthralled. After I finished it I ran out and bought the 2 sequels. If you love animals or dream of a "simple" country life, you'll adore her books. Full of humor and wry observation of human and animal foibles, Jeanine McMullen's books celebrate our deep emotional bonds with animals. If you've ever wistfully dreamed of raising goats on a craggy mountain farm or of riding your magnficent horse through a misty Welsh valley, you must read these books. They'll make you both laugh and cry, and wishing for more...

Twelve authentic, full-color disguises, including such No masks as a ceremonial old man, the Thunder God, an "Oto" mask used in comic interludes between No plays, as well as masks worn for dance, other types of theatrical roles and temple rituals. Clear diagrams and simple assembly instructions included.
Customer Reviews:
inside not as good as the cover.......2007-04-03
The cover of this book makes the masks look intricate and impressive. On the inside, they look cartoonish. For a Halloween costume, I had more success by blowing up photos of Noh masks on a photocopier and then cutting out the eyes.
Very simple masks, no intricate paper cutting or folding.......2004-02-28
You may get the idea from the cover that the masks inside are intricately made from cutting or folding multiple sheets of paper. However, with the exception of the one mask shown on the cover, they are all made from single sheets. Any 3-D effect is achieved almost exclusively through shading on the prints. Apart from that, simple triangular cuts are made in the corners of each mask so they dome slightly rather than lie flat. I found that disappointing. I'd recommend the book for young children, but it definately has nothing to offer to adults or origami enthusiasts. ...
Realistic Japanese masks mainly from Noh play.......1999-12-17
Very realistic and real size paper masks of Japan. Most of masks are from traditional Noh plays. I'm taking a class of folklore in Miyazaki Municipal Collage, and the lecturer Ms. Fusako Izumi, who has been studying masks and puppets for 30 years, told me that it's really nice book with correct details. She wanted to use it as material in college class! Even in Japan, there's no such kind of books to get the concepts of traditional masks easily. It's a pity that one of masks seems to be more Korean rather than Japanese.

Customer Reviews:
I'd love to meet these women.......2001-01-30
The previous review covers the book thoroughly and well, but I have to add how entranced I was by the recent photos of the women. You can see in their eyes, their faces, and their posture that they are something special. The previous reviewer called this a high-priced coffee table book and recommended another title for more extensive information about the WASPs, but if you want to understand the heart and soul of these women, spend some time with these photos.
The WASP, then and now.......2000-06-11
Author Anne Noggle is a veteran of the Women's Air Service Pilots (WASP), organized during World War ll to free male aviators from non-combat duties. American women flew every type of fighter and bomber, from the nimble P-38 Lightning to the massive B-17 "Flying Fortress". They ferried warplanes from factory to front, and helped train young men in flying and targeting. And in September 1944, WASP Anne Baumgartner test-piloted the American prototype jet-fighter, the YP-59A Airacomet. This big, glossy book contains a brief history of the WASP and narrative of their training, accompanied by large, high-quality black-and-white photos of the youthful aviators and their airplanes. Their pride of service is evident in their smiling faces and the praise from military leaders such as Generals Arnold and Eisenhower. Their bittersweet sorrow at their post-war deactivation is described poignantly. They continue to meet annually, and the book concludes with a series of more recent photos of the women, as they appeared in the early 90's. Members of the WASP have attended as guest of honor at the yearly reunions of Russian female WWll combat-aviators. (Ms. Noggle has also authored the marvelous book of interviews and photos of veterans of the Soviet women's air-regiments, entitled "A Dance With Death".) Note: while very attractive, "For God, Country, and the Thrill of It" seems somewhat high-priced for what is basically a coffee-table photo-album. The book is really a personal tribute to Ms. Noggle's comrades. For superior text coverage of the WASP, read "Amelia Earhart's Daughters".
