5 out of 5 stars great study book.......2006-06-14

this book is a LOT harder than the real test. so if you can take these practice tests and get them right, you should do fine on the real LARE.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth it!.......2005-12-06

This booklet is not worth the money. There are several errors in the so called 'pass' vignettes and the explanations on the 'fail' vignettes are poor. Also, there are not enough pass and fail solutions for the vignettes. Difficult to study for various scenarios. Another disappoint for the L.A.R.E. process. Don't buy this booklet.

    Book Description

A radical journal of culture and commentary, The Masses became, in the early part of this century, a forum for socialists and anarchists, artists and authors attracted to the freedom of expression it espoused. This book, based on an exhibition which was sponsored by the Yale University Art Gallery in 1985-86, is the first study of the art in The Masses and the changing role that pictures played in the magazine's political message. Rebecca Zurier examines the origins of The Masses' graphic style in American realism, labor cartoons, and European satire, and relates the magazine's positions to the issues of the day-a period when humor, art, and political struggles all seemed to be compatible. The 149 illustrations present an album of cartoons that are still startlingly fresh.

While one could find in any issue commentary by Max Eastman, Walter Lippmann, Bill Haywood, or John Reed; and literary pieces by Sherwood Anderson, Carl Sandburg, Amy Lowell, or Louis Untermeyer; the visual impact of the magazine was, perhaps, its most enduring. The Masses published political cartoons by Robert Minor, Boardman Robinson, and Art Young; fine drawings by Arthur B. Davies, Abraham Walkowitz, and Pablo Picasso: and an abundance of work by the American realists later known as the Ashcan School, among them John Sloan, George Bellows, Glenn Coleman, Robert Henri, and the young Stuart Davis. Although the magazine did not pay its contributors, for seven years artists and writers donated some of their best work because they believed in its ideals of social change and artistic independence.

Aiming to "conciliate nobody, not even our readers," The Masses was widely recognized as one of the best-edited and best-produced magazines in America, considered by some to be a left-wing forerunner of The New Yorker. However, because of its strident anti-war stance, when the Espionage Act went into effect in 1917, the U.S. government forced The Masses to cease publication.

    Book Description

“A clever fighter is one who not only wins, but excels in winning with ease.” So wrote Sun Tzu 2,500 years ago, and kings, soldiers, and statesmen have been turning to the Chinese master for his astute observations ever since.

Sun Tzu’s incisive blueprint for battlefield strategy is as relevant to today’s combatants in business, politics, and everyday life as it once was to the warlords of ancient China. The Art of War is one of the most useful books ever written on leading with wisdom, an essential tool for modern corporate warriors battling to gain the advantage in the boardroom and for anyone struggling to gain the upper hand in confrontations and competitions.

Here Lionel Giles’s famed 1910 translation, laced with commentary from illustrious Chinese experts, is brought up to date with relevant quotations from Western writers and thinkers. This new edition offers Sun Tzu’s timeless classic, both with and without annotation, making it more accessible to aspiring leaders and military strategists than ever before.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Non Fiction.......2007-09-03

A noted general gives tips and tricks for young players about the whole kill or be killed thing on the battlefield. An early version of war for dummies, that has become a perennial bestseller for actual and wannabe militaristic types for a long, long time. During the time in China when our esteemed author was around, there were plenty of opportunities to give this stuff a shot.

3 out of 5 stars A few grains of truth in a lot of chaff.......2005-12-20

Today many of Sun Tzu quotas are floating around mixed with Shakespeare and the Bible. And as with many of the quote they are out of context and misleading. The quoter usually thinks repeating the word is some sort of magic.

Most versions of this work spend more time trying to identify and qualify Sun Tzu's writings than just quoting them. I will not go through all the arguments as to who "wrote what when" or "translated what when" as you can read this for yourself.
Another distraction is the attempt to show how the book was applied or not applied in recent wars. This may be interesting to someone whose intention is to apply the theories of Sun Tzu; however it is not his writing but someone else's interpretation of its application.

Now let's finally get to Sun Tzu. It is easy with hindsight and a closer look at the future to dismiss Sun Tzu as his practical tactical knowledge is of a time and place long gone. He spends a lot of time on the use of weapons and information gathering techniques of the time. This can be interesting in a historical context; other wise it is quite amusing.

Oh yes those grains of truth I mentioned, well they may sound like clichés but they are still viable. "Know your enemy and know yourself". Others are just practical sense and statistical outcomes that you learn in any military training. I could go through the list, but again that is why you buy the book.

Now just as you decide that the book is outdated for any practical purposes today we have artillery and now stealth and precision, the reminder that "no two wars are alike" and "it is flexibility that makes a difference" is being shown today to still be true. Even in today's wars there is a need for good intelligence and deception. We put a lot of time and energy into Psy-Ops. Sun Tzu shows the advantage in specialized units and crack troops.

I have spent several years in the military and in business and can say this book is a nice addition to history, otherwise of very little value to today's world for war or business.

The most abuse of this book is trying to use it for projects as project management is a science that that was in its infancy at the time this book was written.

            Book Description

Daydreams & Nightmares collects the rarest work from Little Nemo In Slumberland creator Winsor McCay's historic career. A fantasist of the first rank, McCay was a key pioneer in the histories of both comics and animation. He had a fascination with dreams that extended beyond his newspaper strip Little Nemo in Slumberland, and it was a fascination as compelling as that of Freud, Jung and Adler's, as proven in the pages of Daydreams & Nightmares. McCay's dream-inspired strips, illustrations and cartoons feature rarebit-induced nightmares, playful "what-ifs," moralistic panoramas, pictorial allegories and other fantastic visions. The highlights of the book are McCay's Dream of the Rarebit Fiend strips created for the New York Evening Telegram in 1905, as well as early efforts like A Pilgrim's Progress, Poor Jake, Day Dreams, Rabid Reveries, Little Sammy Sneeze ("He never knew when it was coming!") and more.

The artwork in this book includes outstanding examples from several categories of McCay's career: illustrations from his first paper, the Cincinnati Enquirer; anti-war and anti-materialist cartoons; playful strips for Life magazine; early dream sequences; futuristic illustrations for the New York Herald; and allegorical and editorial cartoons for the Hearst newspapers. The book spans the years 1898-1934, the bulk of McCay's career.

McCay's world was the world of playfulness and whimsy that most leave behind in youth and encounter again only in dreams; Daydreams & Nightmares is a tour through that world.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best place to start.......2006-08-28

What a major disappointment. I'm a huge fan of Winsor McCay, and much of the comments here seem to focus on the fact that Fantagraphics is reprinting this book. Well, great, but I wish that they would have taken some more time in writing it. This book is for people who can't get enough of McCay's marvelous work but the Little Nemo collections and John Canemaker's definitive biography would be a much better place to start.

The book is large and all the prints are in black and white (as they were originally, unfortunately no color Sunday additions). While McCay is known for his use of color, it's a welcome addition that Richard Marshall has put together a book focusing on McCay's black and white work. Unfortunately, the images are rendered little more that wallpaper since they are presented without any context. The forward, preface, and two pieces by McCay himself do next to nothing to help us understand the images on any level. The forward gives four paragraphs about his life, an interesting preface by the editor cries out against the "neglect" of McCay's contributions, yet all this book does is present them in a cold, museum-like atmosphere. If this were my first introduction to McCay I don't think it would have resonated with me much. McCay's two included essays on animating are interesting and slightly illuminating to his process but don't really seem to be pieces of the big picture onto themselves.

This book is an empty shell: When (year, point in his career) and why did McCay create these? Would we see some of these motifs recycled later? Many of his editorial accompaniments are vivid, but were those really his views or just images meant to go a long with the editorialist's ideas? What was the topic that went with them? What about the racism in some of the images? This left me with more questions than appreciations for his work.

The drawings are grouped into Early Magazine Work, which has some work, with titles added but no context or even date of publication. Some of the images are of fairly poor quality, possibly from either the printing, or being blown-up too much, or both. Next are Newspaper Fantasy Illustrations (only five but beautiful--no specific dates or context given), then Midsummer Daydreams and Other Comic Strips (Pilgrim's Progress, Poor Jake, many without headers and none with dates), the Dream of the Rarebit Fiend, Sunday Excursions (all Little Sammy Sneeze), and finally Sermons on Paper (which accompanied editorials, again, no specific dates or context given).

5 out of 5 stars A stunning collection done right.......2006-02-23

Beautiful reproductions of some great work by McCay. Lots of good stuff here, from Rarebit and the later editorial work, to other short-lived, but interesting strips - all in high-quality reproductions big enough to really appreciate. some of the editorial work is quite stunning and some of the "dream" strips are among his best.

A generous sampling of McCay's work outside Little Nemo - not to be missed for fans of his work or of early 20th century America

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Collection Containing McCay's Most Inspiring Art.......2005-12-28

The editorial "cartoons," reprinted in this book, which are really dignified, highly elaborate philosophical/social illustrations are truly in a class by themselves. They evoke a by-gone day when human dignity was at the forefront of our social consciousness. Things have changed in this regard and not for the better. The themes of youth and old age, duty, the vice of envy, the worlds each of us live in, are all profoundly and beautifully treated in these matchless illustrations. This is one of the best books of illustration that I own.

It's a little ironic that Fantagraphics has published, and now republished the book, given that the company publishes THE COMICS JOURNAL, which often seems to me to have "a libido for the ugly," both physical and spiritual, and thus seems the polar opposite of McCay's uplifting aesthetic and moral outlook. Fantagraphics is to be applauded greatly for this one.

I was first attracted to this book by it's intriguing title - Daydreams and Nightmares. I was pleased to finally find a book of poetry that I can understand and relate to my own life. The first part of the book describes the feelings of many young girls - a yearning for love and a need to belong to someone. The last part of the book seems to show the poet's disappointment in love and an ongoing loneliness. I look forward to Book II and I hope this talented poet continues to express the deep emotion that so many of us find hard to express.

                5 out of 5 stars Surprised & Pleased.......2006-11-12

I'm not usually a poetry reader, however, I received this book as a gift. I was surprised and pleased at the insight of the poetry - how you can feel like you are inside looking out from these words, sharing these experiences, feeling these feelings. Caused soul-searching of my own. I plan to share this book with others.

                      Book Description

In Daydreams, Daniel Parkins gives a raw testimony of God's sovereignty through intense times of pain--honestly portraying his emotional, physical and spiritual strain and giving unique insight into the life and mind of one who has experienced utter agony beyond his control. He conveys this though multiple medical diseases, family tragedy, parental divorce, and the deep feelings of being alone and angry. In Daydreams, Daniel Parkins challenges us to no longer be content with the walking nightmares we are often in, but to wake up and experience the joy and freedom it is to trust in our awesome God.
