Spiritual roots and traditions spanning 2,000 years distinguish Oriental medicine from its Western counterpart. In Oriental Medicine, editors Jan Van Alphen and Anthony Aris strive to offer an exhaustive and visually stunning overview of healing systems, and they succeed beautifully in detailing the histories and techniques of traditional Indian, Tibetan, and Chinese (including Taiwan, Vietnam, Korea, and Japan) medicine. Some terms will be familiar to Western readers--Ayurvedic medicine, for example, is "the system ... which developed from the ancient books of wisdom known as the Vedas," made accessible by the writings of Deepak Chopra. The text teems with magnificent, full-page color reproductions of classic manuscripts, miniatures, and drawings, plus photographs of medicinal plants and healing practices and objects. The discussions of each ancient medical system focus on such topics as the system's history, the impact of religion on medical theory, beliefs about wellness, the causes of disease, diagnoses, and therapies. The richness and complexity of the information collected in Oriental Medicine make it an ideal resource for the beginning practitioner of Asian healing arts. The book proves to lay readers that the Western approach to healing is only a small part of a greater whole, and it will interest students of history fascinated by how different societies--including our own--interpret and relate to health and illness.
Book Description
The traditional medical systems of Asia evolved over centuries of empirical observation and diagnosis and treatment of disease. Based on a corpus of written material, they are found embedded with the symbols, concepts of the body and world views characterising the historical differences between civilisations. This is the first book to present to both general and specialist readership an illustrated guide to the main codified medical traditions of Asia from the perspective of Western scholars as well as that of physicians actually working today within each system. An introduction by Fernand Meyer outlines how traditional medical systems reflect complex social and cultural realities which help us to understand how different societies, including our own, interpret and relate to matters of health and disease.
The main streams of Indian, Tibetan and Chinese medicine are the subject of fifteen contributions, providing a brief history of each system and a clear exposition of theory and the principle methods of diagnosis and treatment. How these ancient systems have adapted and are actually integrated today with Western biomedicine in India, Tibet, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Korea and Japan, is the subject of individual chapters.
The principal themes and subjects of traditional Asian medical systems are copiously illustrated with field photographs taken by Mark De Fraeye over a number of years, and which are balanced with the traditions' fascinating body charts, herbals, aides memoire, as well as intruments, amulets and other medical paraphernalia.
The book concludes with essays on the three main healing deities of Asia; Dhanvantari, Shennong and the Medicine Buddha.
This publication will be of multi-disciplinary interest and use to historians and social scientists, as well as to physicians and the general public interested in a vast heritage of complementary and alternative therapies.

Hungarian photographer André Kertész eventually became famous for his wryly poetic images of everyday life. But achieving that distinction was a long slog, and Kertész--who emigrated to Paris in 1925 and New York in 1936--struggled for decades in near-obscurity and despair. Andre Kertész traces the artist's career with an engaging text and 250 exquisitely reproduced black-and-white photographs that span his long career. Throughout, he used his camera to create a visual diary of his lifehaunting images suffused with a loner's sensibility. As a young man imbued with the romantic ideals of Hungarian nationalism, he photographed his handsome brother Jeno as Icarus, his exultant body silhouetted against the sky. Unable to find work after returning from the battlefields of World War I, Kertész tried his luck in Paris. It was the best move of his life. The City of Light was hungry for photographers to fill the new illustrated magazines. Avant-garde painters and sculptors opened up a new world of experimentation that prompted Kertész to photograph a series of female nudes seen in a funhouse mirror. And the new, lightweight Leica camera enabled him to snap scenes on the slya bum inspecting his toes on the banks of the Seine or a legless flower seller trying to tempt a passerby. After marrying his Hungarian girlfriend, he sailed to New York, lured by the promise of steady work as a fashion photographer and a climate more hospitable to a Jewish artist. But the agency job didn't suit him, and his emotional style had little appeal for American magazines. In photographs like "Lost Cloud"--a tiny white puff suspended next to the impersonal face of a skyscraper--he mirrored his own sense of dislocation. In succeeding years, he would make classic photographs of the city, including "Washington Square," an elegant aerial view of a lone pedestrian in a snowy landscape of bare branches and benches. Major recognition finally came in the early 1960s, when Kertész was in his late sixties. Fortunately, he lived and worked for twenty more years, basking in the newly exalted status of art photography. Andre Kertész serves as the catalog for an exhibition at the National Gallery of Art (through May 15, 2005) that travels to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (June 12-Sept. 5, 2005). Cathy CurtisBook Description
In a career that spanned much of the twentieth century, Hungarian-born photographer André Kertész (1894-1985) created deceptively simple yet compelling and poetic photographs. This book presents approximately 120 of these striking images as well as previously unpublished archival material that sheds important light on the artist and his work.
Like the exhibition it accompanies, André Kertész takes us through Kertész's years in Budapest, Paris, and New York. Unlike other works on Kertész, it presents only vintage prints and includes several seldom seen photographs from throughout his career.
Written by renowned art historian Sarah Greenough and Kertész Foundation curator Robert Gurbo, André Kertész includes excerpts from the photographer's previously unexamined journals and correspondence--documents that prompted the authors to reexamine every period of Kertész's life and work. They reflect on their findings in essays covering each of the major phases in Kertész's career.
While the book includes examples of the artist's most important photographs, including Chez Mondrian, The Satiric Dancer, and The Eiffel Tower, it also focuses on the intensely autobiographical nature of his work. It elegantly demonstrates the ways in which Kertész injected his persona, both literally and metaphorically, into his work.
Accompanying the book's essays and exquisite tritone reproductions of his photographs are an illustrated chronology that corrects many previous errors, a comprehensive bibliography, and selections of previously unpublished writings by the photographer.

Book Description
" This important monograph is the first paperback to present a complete overview of the work of Hungarian photographer Andre Kertesz (1894-1985), one of the undisputed masters of modern photography. Originally published in hardcover format in 1994, it is now in an affordable paperback edition. Author Pierre Borhan covers three essential periods of Kertesz's work: Hungary (1912-1925), France (1925-1936), and the United States (1936-1985). A full section is devoted to his famous "distortions" and another to his color works. Each section is prefaced by a critical text written by an international specialist. This stunning book is a work of reference and a valuable source of information, but it is also a dramatic and luxurious tribute to one of the masters of twentieth-century photography."Customer Reviews:
A Superb Overview of the Works of a 20th Century Master.......2000-12-16
If you are offended by all nudity, you should know that this volume contains both male and female nudity. These images are all very tastefully and beautifully done in the best artistic expression of capturing the essence of humanity.
Kertesz was born as Andor ("Bandi") Kertesz in Budapest in 1894. He was born into a Jewish middle class family. This pleasant environment was upset when his father died of tuberculosis when Bandi was 14. His uncle looked after Kertesz's career interests after that, and steered him into working at the stock exchange, a job Kertesz hated. Kertesz served in World War I, and was wounded. But he did not seem to have been destroyed emotionally by the experience as so many young Europeans were. His photographs from the trenches focus on the fundamental experience rather than the shocking or appalling.
Unlike many photographers who started as artists in another genre, Kertesz was drawn directly to photography. Seeing the first illustrated magazines sold him on the concept, and he got a camera as soon as he could afford one.
His career spans four periods. The first was in his native Hungary and emphasized sympathetic, realistic images of "peasants, Gypsies and the landscape of the Hungarian plains." His work was that of an amateur, photographing in his spare time when he was not working at the stock exchange.
The second was when he moved to Paris in 1925, where he thought he did his best work. He became "Andre" there, and shifted his attention to "street people, bums, children, emigre compatriots, artists and artisans." During this time, he was an important influence on both Brassai and Cartier-Bresson. He had commercial success at this time, being employed by many of the new French and German illustrated magazines. By 1928, he had moved beyond plates, and owned his first Leica.
The third period was when he left Paris for New York in 1936. This experience was a setback from his point of view. American tastes did not match his interests. The Museum of Modern Art insisted he chop off the pubic hair on a female nude, ruining an image from his point of view, before it could be displayed. The American magazines wanted simple, compelling images rather than the cool compositions of Kertesz. He suffered artistically and financially from rejection until be finally caught on with Home & Garden in 1946. But he did not like the work, and was pleased to quit it in 1961. "What I feel, I do." He had remained faithful to his photographic muse, but found New York a harsh environment for his vision. This was his least productive period artistically.
The fourth period saw him with an international reputation as a top photographer, and involved much freedom to develop his concepts. Much of his best work comes from this period.
I was not familiar with his work before reading this book (which was recommended to me by a reviewing colleague at Amazon.com). I was pleased to make his acquaintance. There is a mastery of composition and detail in the work that reminds one of Ansel Adams' landscapes. He also was a brilliant student of the potential of shadows, particularly for creating more interesting compositions. Shadows are treated as being real, like solid objects. That makes the images far more intriguing. Kertesz also produced many remarkable still lifes that combine shadows with simple objects to make remarkable abstractions at the same time.
To me though, his most interesting and compelling work involved the use of distorting mirrors. With female nudes, he used the mirrors to transform them into fascinating abstractions that make eloquent statements about femaleness. I highly recommend these images to you. They are clearly influenced by Picasso, but go beyond Picasso. Very interesting!
My favorite images in the collection are:

Budapest, 1914
Gypsy Children, Esztergom, Hungary, 1917

Winter Garden, New York, 1970
The Balcony, Martinique, January 1, 1972
New York, 1972
Paris, 1984

The introductory essay is by Pierre Borhan and provides a superb overview of the overall career and work. Each of the four periods has a separate detailed introduction focusing on that portion of the work. These essays are enlivened by small images that exemplify and elucidate the points made.
In general, the reproduction quality is very high on the full-sized images. A few of the small images within the essays are too dark, apparently reflecting printing errors.
After you have finished enjoying this superb volume, I suggest that you think about physical distance from what you consider. Do you like to get up close and touch things? Or do you prefer an aloof distance, as from a elevated rear window? Or does it depend on the moment and the subject? Few want to confront a mugger close up. Try changing your distance deliberately for a month, and observe how it changes your perspective.
Look for the lyrical truth in all you perceive!

A wonderful collection of photographs.......2002-05-24
Kertesz' black-and-white photos include many scenes that are haunting, touching, or whimsical. I especially like his street scenes, which capture everyday people. His many photos of Paris life in the 1920s and 30s remind me of the writings of Henry Miller (see, for example, Miller's "Tropic of Cancer").
Some memorable images: a young boy in Paris holding a delicate-looking puppy; a wandering violinist on a street in Hungary; a snowy view of Washington Square; a grubby old man urinating on a street in Paris; a portrait of an imperious Colette. There are some witty captures, particularly one delightful shot of umbrella-wielding pedestrians on a Tokyo street. Kertesz had a keen eye and a marvelous sense of composition; this book is a visual treat from start to finish.
