I really enjoyed this installment of Hip Hotels. As expected, the pictures are yummy enough to qualify as "gourmet eye candy". But, to me, it's Ypma's commentary that really steals the show: The writing is served up for those in-the-know and flavored with a perspective that's both witty and inviting.
Pretty good but could be a lot better.......2005-04-02
This book profiles around 45 luxury hotels throughout the world. Some of the hotels featured include Vatulele in Fiji, Pangkor Laut in Malaysia and Soneva Fushi in the Maldives. Due to the format of the book, I found the pictures to be small. Some entries include only 4 pictures of the hotel which really is not enough. Overall, it is ok. Anyone interested in this type of book should check out The Hotel Book: Great Escapes series by Taschen. This series focuses on luxury hotels in Asia, Africa, and Europe and the pictures are outstanding.

Mr. Ypma is a gifted photographer and a careful writer - a rare combination. Great selection of hotels. It is the perfect coffee table version of cool new online services such as the great "tablethotels.com" which also work as a trip planner.

A nice coffee-table item..........2000-04-28
I got this book as present from the owner of one the resorts featured by Ypma. Its true that a picture can paint a thousand word. This book is a beautiful compilation of some of the most breathtaking locations in the world. Some of the visuals also provide interior-decorating ideas. After all, the writer is founder of the award-winning Interior Architecture and creator of the best-selling World Design series. If I'm an owner of a resort, I'd want him to feature my property the way he does it here. The places featured may offer 'out-of-this -world luxury' but ONLY if one can afford it. If paradise is the aim in every respect, there are many more beautiful and 'Highly Individual Places' that are more accessible. I would not recommend this book as the ultimate vacation guide, only the perfect coffee-table item.

After seeing the collection in Madrid a study of Vol 1& 2 were rewarding in so far as each work of art (95% plus ) paintings had an essay regarding the work and aspects of the artists life and style. The paintings in the books and collection were perhaps not typical of the artist they are in deed lovely and worth an art lovers time. These are not coffee table books but give one an opportunity to get a good idea of what Western art is. A. Cinelli, M.D.

Unpainted Pictures is the title of a series of fascinating watercolors painted by Emil Nolde from 1938 through 1945. Nolde created these works in the seclusion of his own home in Seebll, after his works had been confiscated by the Nazis and he himself had been forbidden to paint. He lent many of them to friends for safekeeping, in order to protect himself and his art from Gestapo raids. These small, free, imaginative works were ''unpainted'' in the sense that they did not officially exist and were not supposed to exist--not only that, but Nolde hoped to expand on them at a later date. Nolde never offered any of these watercolors for sale, and today this collection--which has become, for many, the summary and epitome of his work--resides at the Nolde Foundation in Seebll. All of the 104 watercolors in the series are presented here, along with a kind of diary, consisting of dated notes, thoughts, questions, and dreams, which together form a record of the period in which the Unpainted Pictures were being created. Gorgeous, diverse, and quietly moving, these Unpainted Pictures continue to be nothing short of a revelation.

it is a really beautiful book, in spite of being small, contains watercolors of this great artist, gorgeous, very good quality of illustration, that I make on paper Japanese, in small format, all are like small jewels, that display the great colorista that was. I am enchanted with the book.
Gorgeous book.......2007-06-01
Emile Nolde's Unpainted Pictures is a reminder that the Nazi regime affected everyone, not just the groups targeted for persecution. This is an example of one artist's adaptation to those horrible circumstances. It is a book of beautiful reproductions of watercolors done in secret and distributed to friends to keep them safe. Even the format of the book is small, implying that the paintings had to be hidden. It is not a book for generalists; it is for a specific audience, those who are interested in Expressionist paintings.

I liked, though did not love, this book. I think that perhaps there are too many reproductions, some of which are inferior to the others. I hope that when I die and become a famous artist (well, one can hope, can't they?) someone will edit my work with more care.
Still Nolde is always interesting and this book is worth it for fans of his work.

This is a thick soft cover art book that accompanies Biblical passages with art objects - paintings, sculptures from all cultures, Italian Renaissance to Modern Chinese water-colour that attempts to IMAGE the WORD - the gospel, and puts the love of Jesus in Christianity into a non-preachy, very emotionally and aesthetically moving document that appeals to the modern, intellectual, sophisticated, sensitive, cultured but atheist reader. It makes the Bible come alive in a fantasy of visual ecstasy. A marvellous gift for those who are hurting from a lack of understanding God's love. A spiritually soothing gift in a coffee-table book format.

This series of three volumes for the three year lectionary cycle (each year concentrates on a synoptic Gospel - Matthew, Mark or Luke) contains music, poetry, art, etc. that in some way reflect on the Scripture for a given Sunday. The volumes are carefully multicultural.
An example: for the first Sunday in Advent, there are photos by Paul Chesley, David Austen and Dennis Oda;excerpts from Robert A. Raines and Jospeh Wood Krutch; poetry by Dom Helder Camara and Thomas John Carlisle; and a detail from art by Naul Ojeda.
Each Sunday is equally diverse. You should always be able to find something that meets your needs and/or challenges you to reconsider your needs. Highly recommended.

Emil Nolde is regarded as one of the most noteworthy Expressionist painters. Portraits play a prominent role in the artist's oeuvre, particularly those of his early creative period. During those years in which Nolde's art developed to maturity, his painting was enriched by an innovative power that inspired later artists well into the twentieth century. Some 60 of the unparalleled portraits completed by Emil Nolde between 1903 and 1918 are presented and described in this book. These works include the masterful self-portraits of 1916-17, the famous double portrait Brother and Sister of 1918, and his portrait-style images of people he encountered while traveling in New Guinea from 1913 to 1914. The autonomy and immediacy of Nolde's painting is particularly evident in these works. Fascinated by the obscure inner-stirrings of human identity, he developed an unusal, gestural mode of painting.

A slim book of grainy photographs.......2000-11-05
Back in the 1980's. I was given a book of George Platt Lynes' photographs as a birthday present. It was a superb collection which I lost when I moved from Boston to Portland, OR back in 1990. I have recently begun trying to locate a similar book of Lynes' work. This book isn't it. The portraits are interesting enough but I do not understand why this book is so intentionally grainy in quality and so very slim! It's a good book for those interested in photography in general, but I feel it will be a disappointment to those who already appreciate the greatness of George Platt Lynes.

I placed my order on Dec. 20th. Seller is in KS and says it can take up to 30 days for mail to get to AZ. HORRIBLE customer service!!!! Will never order from Bookmaven again. BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!

Reading the Lab is like reading an old Warner Bros. cartoon. It's great fun that will leave you wanting more. Two full stories and a pin-up gallery to boot. What more could you ask for? Oh yeah! Puzzles and games too!

If you enjoy insane humor then you'll love this book!!! Reccomended for anyone who wants to sit back and have a good laugh.
