NOT a 12 Year Old Reader.......2003-03-07
I found Chris Brook's book beautifully illustrated and quite informative. The Gothic Revival style is little understood and little appreciated. Personally, I don't believe anyone can truly understand Art Nouveau (and its successor, Art Deco)without an understanding of the organic forms first created by neo-Gothic architects. For anyone who wishes to better understand 19th and early 20th century architecture (and perhaps their own local parish church building), this is a very good introduction to the subject.
A lively and masterful summary.......2000-09-28
This is the first new survey of the Gothic Revival for more than seventy years. Even to have caught up with the huge amount of writing since then, both in architectural history and in cultural history, would have been a great achievement. Chris Brooks goes much further, however, in his gift for tracing connections and suggesting parallels between artistic change and its social context. He also shows how widely the Revival ranged, both in the English speaking world, and on Continental Europe. He shows that the Gothic Revival is truly one of the central themes of Western culture.
Two more points in its favour: it is beautifully illustrated, inventively designed, and exceptionally good value...
A Good Introduction/Review.......2000-02-18
This book is a bit dry, but it is a fantastic introduction to or review of the contraditory meanings of "Gothic Style" after the Middle Ages. The text does a good job of bringing out the complexity of the topic without being overwhelming; the full color images (and the book as a whole) are stunningly beautiful. This isn't the most fun you'll ever have reading an art book, but if you need to catch up on the info or want a gorgeous book with lots of great pictures, this is a good choice.

Help for a most challenging subject.......2005-02-11
I have been painting & teaching watercolor for 15 years. This is the first helpful book that I have found on painting seascapes in watercolor. I accidentally ran across it in the library of a retirement community where I teach & immediately borrowed it. It contains basic sketches & information about the "character" & construction of waves, surf, foam, & trails which the ordinary painter is not aware of. Reading this book is an "education"; it contains sketches & how-to instructions which any painter can follow to practice painting seascapes in watercolor -- one of the most challenging subjects in this media. As soon as I located this book on Amazon.com, I ordered it.
Customer Reviews:
Loaded with inspiration and techniques.......2002-02-16
I really enjoyed the focus of this book on painting water. Water is such an essential element of so many landscapes, it was really nice to read a book devoted to it, and not just a sub-chapter.
I also really enjoyed the numerous color reproductions of paintings throughout the book which were well-chosen and beautiful to look at.
Bringing water to life !.......2000-07-12
It's always a burning desire to capture as close the minute details in a scenary picture or the scenery itself. Water often proved to be the hardest to express its formless self.
This book discussed in details the interpretation of water features using the different media like oil, pastel, water colour. All along, it had been thought that watercolour produces the best details with depth. But the book shows that other media can achieve similar effects as well.
Many examples are discussed in step-by-step approach and illuatsated in sequences to teach about the built-up, so it's a simplified step to learning. Many medium are explore adding to the variety of expression that beginners can explore.
Well formatted and recommended for beginners and intermediate painters.
Excellent Reference Book.......1999-12-30
This book offers great projects in watercolor, oil, pastel and mixed media with lots of finished work and step by step examples. It has improved the impression of "water" in my paintings remarkably.

Not enough instructions/detail.......2006-10-18
He should have cut down on the number of ways to pain seascapes, rivers, and lakes and given more instructions.
How Did You Paint That?.......2006-02-26
This book is a nice book with a lot of nice pictures and reviews of these pictures from the painters. But the painters did not go into any specifications about how they made the water look so real or what type of brushes they used. There are no directions or instructions on how to reproduce one of the paintings. I was looking for a book on how to paint real looking pictures for advanced painters and this was not that book.

Ok for what it is.......2006-09-01
This book is ok for what it is, which is a collection of 100 paintings by different artists and a few tidbits they share. Inspirational, maybe to some. Instructional, not in the slightest. Tips... not that I saw, though I could have missed them.
The book and paintings might offer some insight to those wanting to see what can be accomplished with the various mediums and palettes of colors. It might offer some exposure to differing styles. It's not going to teach much to most though. Still I find it well worth the (used) price I paid.
Inspiring.......2005-09-28
This is a good book to be used as a springboard for your own work. It has works in different mediums, each artist briefly describing how they came to their finished work; it is not meant to be a 'how-to'; rather, to stimulate and hopefully jumpstart your temporary artist's block. It is also good to read other artist's technical approach to a subject.
Lots of pictures.......2005-09-07
I have about any art book imaginable and ordered this from an Artist International Magazine sales pitch. It has 100 different artists with no more than 20 sentences describing their "technique". I would not recommend this book for much other than seeing different paintings of different artists. And I hadn't heard of any of the painters at that.

Book Description
Trivial?! There is nothing insignificant or inconsequential about television's longest-running animated family show "The Simpsons." But this page-a-day calendar is loaded with so much mind-teasing, memory-searching, head-ringing, thought-twisting trivia, it can be described only one way -- "TRIVIAL"!!! Make room on your desk for day after day of comic relief from "Our favorite Family" to yours!
Customer Reviews:
Don't buy this from amazon.......2004-01-22
The calendar isn't fantastic and unless you really like the Simpsons you shouldn't buy it from here. Amazon.com charges way too much for this calender. I purchased the exact same calender in a local mall for only $3. It's much better than the 10.99 price that amazon.com charges.
Okay....wish it was better........2004-01-06
Being a Simpsons fan, I was a little dissapointed. The 2004 Simpsons day calendar is okay, the cover is the most interesting thing you're going to see in this entire purchase. I should have kept the box, it was more interesting. Basically each day there's a Simpsons picture and a trivia question, I guess I didn't read the title before I bought this item - it said the "TRIVIAL SIMPSONS 2004 366- DAY BOX CALENDAR". So it's all about trivia and even smart Simpsons fans of mine couldn't get some of the answers correctly, which makes it difficult, and therefore not too fun.
Other than that, for the life of me, I can't get this calendar to stand, it keeps falling over. It's lesser quality than other day calendars I've owned. It's supposed to snap and stand there and it just doesn't.
This calendar would be a deal if you get it at 1/2 off or more in the upcoming months. Besides that, it's not too good of an investment and probably won't keep you entertained for an entire year. If I had to grade it, it'd be a C+, B-.
