Book Description

Feng shui is an ancient Chinese practice based on principles from design, ecology, architecture, mysticism, and common sense. In this masterful work, Sarah Rossbach interprets the teachings of feng shui master Lin Yun for contemporary Westerners, offering the classic essentials on achieving harmony with one's environment. They apply not only to the layout of a building, but also to the arrangement of furniture within a room and to the best design of offices and public spaces--in short, to any arrangement of man's environment. Learn the philosophy of this centuries-old art to help you achieve financial prosperity, good health, and happiness in today's complicated world.

"A fascinating and useful book." --Milton Glaser

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Authoritative and well-written.......2004-08-06

After studying dozens of books on Feng Shui, I keep returning to Sarah Rossbach. She is without question the most knowledgeable, serious, and articulate Feng Shui teacher that I have found. She offers practical solutions without dogma, which is one thing I appreciate most about her books. She teaches you how to fish, rather than fishing for you.

My only, ONLY disagreement with her is about her teacher's house in San Francisco. It may be a perfect Feng Shui example, but completely without taste or sensitivity. That was a disappointment, but it did not turn me from Sarah Rossbach's books in the slightest.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction.......2002-11-11

Feng Shui as actually practiced by experts in China based on ancient traditions. This book does not cater to western prejudices by leaving things out or by making up theories to turn it into a parody of modern science. The author learned about Feng Shui when she lived in Hong Kong and would accompany a master on his rounds, who had started classes in Tibetan Buddhism and Chinese teachings when he was six. She covers tradition and history as well as the practice and teachings she experienced.

2 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2000-06-11

I guess it depends on why you read this book, but if you want to know what to do in your home, don't waste your money on this one. She does a good job of telling the history of Feng Shui and lots of little anecdotes about the successful uses of it, but no good practical ways to use it for your own benefit. It didn't do a thing for me.

According to Taoists, all energy (chi) is interconnected--it is the subtle interplay between individual energies, which the ancient Chinese observed in nature led to the development of the art of placement (feng shui). By putting homes, burial grounds, dining rooms, or furniture in the correct spot in relation to other environmental components, such as hills, streams, doorways, or even mirrors, harmonious energies result, thereby creating peaceful, healthy, and prosperous lives for those existing in the energy field of a given place. With this easy-to-understand introduction, the Western reader can quickly adopt and adapt ancient principles relating to magnetism, the four directions, the harmony of opposites (yin and yang), the five elements, color, and light as they relate to space and place to transform their lives. Energy flows--how and where it flows is up to the feng shui practitioner. --P. Randall Cohan

Book Description

• The first book to explain how feng shui developed from the Taoist systems of astrology, yin and yang, and the five elements.

• Provides a background on Taoist philosophy to help readers better understand the principles of feng shui and how to use them properly.

• Helps readers improve home, business, garden, property, neighborhoods, and much more.

The Chinese art of feng shui has become extremely popular in the West, but too often advice on the subject consists of overly simplistic instructions for rearranging one's house without any explanation of the profound philosophical system behind these changes. The ancient Taoists developed feng shui from their understanding of the subtle interplay of energies that make up the universe, and no true mastery of feng shui is possible without a knowledge of Taoism. Taoist Feng Shui provides step-by-step guidelines for improving your home, business, garden, property, and neighborhood using this ancient system of knowledge.

In Taoist Feng Shui, Susan Levitt traces the history of feng shui and shows how it is grounded in knowledge of yin and yang and the five Taoist elements of fire, earth, metal, water, and wood, as well as many other principles essential to Taoism. Once a background in Taoism is established, readers can better understand the philosophy behind concepts such as choosing the best colors for each room of the home, room-by-room furniture placement, yin and yang balance, correct lighting, outdoor landscaping, the function of hallways and entrances, and the proper use of mirrors, crystals, fountains, and other feng shui tools. With in-depth examples from the author's private feng shui practice, Taoist Feng Shui can help all readers transform their personal environments to create peace, harmony, health, wealth, and good fortune.

5 out of 5 stars clear, practical and fun.......2000-08-20

I really like practical information and this book is full of it. It was clear and easy to read. I especially thought the insightful chapter on the five elements very applicable to everyday life. I have seen results from the suggestions in Susan's book.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful guide.......2000-08-19

A wonderful guide to the Chinese practice of placement from a Taoist perspective. Offers traditional Taoist aspects of feng shui, including the Lo P'an Compass and the I Ching, as well as the relationship between feng shui and Taoist astrology. Also includes information on the Ba Gua Map and the Five Elements, including many examples of how to arrange rooms and counter negative energies in your home or office.

5 out of 5 stars Wise, insightful, yet practical........2000-08-06

This is the only book that explains the wisdom and spirituality of Feng Shui in a way that is practical. I read it cover to cover in one sitting because it reads as exciting as a mystery. It was fun to picture in my mind how to apply the info to my own home as I read. Two thumbs up and six stars!

5 out of 5 stars Great material and immediately useful.......2000-07-30

Susan Levitt has done a fantastic job of pulling together the ancient art of Feng Shui into a format that is understandable and very useful around the house and office. I am very pleased with the results, and I was fortunate enough to see financial, health, and relationship changes for the better.

5 out of 5 stars A "must" for all students and practitioners of Feng Shui........2000-03-04

Ancient Taoists developed feng shui from an understanding of universal energies, and this guide traces its history and how its knowledge has evolved in conjunction with basic Taoist beliefs. More than just a 'how to' guide, this examines the spiritual foundations of feng shui concepts.

      5 out of 5 stars A No-Nonsense Book about Feng shui.......2004-07-23

If you have to buy another book on feng shui, this is it!!! I've read dozens of books on Feng Shui but this by far is the easiest to read, the best book for beginners. I've attended seminars on feng shui too and they were oftentimes too technical and therefore made initial practice of feng shui intimidating. this book by ms. lindsay is both engaging and inspiring. Once i started reading i couldn't put it down. Although there are only few illustrations to support her descriptions, ms. lindsay's easy-to-follow suggestions on how to improve balance in ones home/abode or workplace more than makes up for the lack of visual props. She should write more books - she's a gifted writer.

4 out of 5 stars What kind of beginner are you?.......2000-06-29

It is a true beginner's book. No previouse knowledge of fengshui is necessary. It is difficult to review a beginner's book because after you read this book you are not a beginner any more. In my humble opinion, there are two types of beginners. The type one is the scientific students type. They want to know the basic theory before they conduct an experiment. They are usually right once they take action. If you are a scientific student type beginner, this book is way too shallow. The other type of beginner is curiouse child type. They love to try stuff and they might make mistakes before they really get the idea. If the elements, Kua and funny Chinese characters give you headaches, you will love this book. Use the examples as you see fit, jump the pages or anything you do not like. You will not get lost through the book. It is a comfortable book. This book is featured by fengshuihelp.com.

              Book Description

From an early age Peter Simon has delighted in documenting the world around him through photography. Here is his lifes work thus far, an astonishing record of the far-ranging experiences of his generation, featuring many of the major figures, both in the mainstream and counter-culture, of the past 40 years.

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars A Sharp Eye Indeed.......2007-03-23

At first glance, one would think that Peter Simon's book, I and Eye, is a coffee table-style, picture book. But one need only open it to find out differently. This book is an autobiography--with a really good picture album.

I had the privilege of meeting Peter Simon. He's friendly, laid back, and so open about himself you like him right away. Peter's honesty about himself, the good and the bad, was awe-inspiring. By the time he finished, I felt like we were old friends.

I and Eye is so much more than just a picture book. Through its pages, we see a life lived, with its joys--and its sorrows. Because Peter's camera was such a ubiquitous presence throughout his life--from his pre-teen years on--viewing I and Eye is like looking through an album of one person's memories. As a bonus, we get to see some of Peter's father's work (His father, Richard Simon was an avid photographer in his own right and co-founder of Simon and Schuster.) and get a glimpse of his childhood that we would otherwise not be able to see. Taken in toto, the book captures a life.

There are introductions by Carly Simon (yes, she's his sister), David Silver, Stephen Davis, and Richard North Patterson. Every one of them gives testament to the openness and honesty Peter has with people.

Technically, I and Eye is the work of a consummate photographer. Peter's specialty, to use a trite phrase, is the candid shot. Even his posed shots have a spontaneity that makes them seem candid. Some of his portraits are powerful. Some are precious. All provoke strong emotions. Peter's landscapes incorporate a love for the places he captures, a majority of them on his beloved Cape Cod. This book is a must for anyone who calls him or herself a photographer and aspires to do great things with a camera.

Take time with this book. Find a comfortable spot, relax, and allow its pages to carry you through the life of a warm, interesting, and talented man. You'll find the trip worthwhile.

4 out of 5 stars If You Remember the '60's..........2002-05-29

It's been said that if you remember the '60's you probably weren't really there. It's a good thing Peter had a camera because he probably would have been wondering himself what those days were like. Parts of his world, beautifully recorded, jar our memories. Whether these memories are painful or delightful, they are part of our collective story. Many '60's communes didn't allow photographs, so these may be rarer than one assumes. The book is worth looking at and reading.

1 out of 5 stars Uninspired photographs and more boomer self aggrandizement.......2002-03-06

I wanted to like this book, I really did, but I couldn't get past the amateurish tone as Simon retreads that well trod path that amounts to the sixties generation stations of the cross--wealthy childhood, discovering drugs and sex at college, dropping out and living off your parents on a commune, plugging into Eastern philosophies and, finally, capitalizing on "the good old days". I found the photographs mundane and the essays almost unbearable as Simon chronicles his constant drug taking and drifting from place to place. As another reviewer wrote, I don't think we would have seen this book printed if not for his name and his celebrity sister.

4 out of 5 stars Makes me wish I was born a few years earlier.......2002-02-25

Peter Simon is a talented photojournalist, and this book is the story of his life, with a definite emphasis on the 60's and early 70's counterculture years, which he lived to the fullest. It's all here: the protests, living on a commune, the eastern spiritual gurus, flirtations with nudism, the (impressive) series of hippy girlfriends, the rock stars (he's Carly Simon's brother).

I'm sure other members of his generation will find the book very nostalgic. As for me, it's almost enough to make we wish I'd been born 10 or 15 years sooner. I went to college during the early years of the Reagan administration. The 60's obviously weren't a very happy time, but it would be hard to imagine someone of my generation putting out a book like this: who would care?

The later chapters of the book are an odd lot of whatever he was shooting during those years of his life. Therefore we have some baseball coverage, some photos of landscapes and his celebrity friends on Martha's Vineyard and some coverage of Woodstock 1999. I'd judge these chapters as substantially less interesting than the early ones.

One thing this book does illustrate is the importance of connections in getting a book of photography published. I'm not saying it's not a worthy project: it certainly is. But a lot of worthy projects are never published, and it's hard to believe his sister's celebrity and his family's connections in the publishing industry ("Simon" is the "Simon" in "Simon & Schuster") weren't key factors, especially for a virtually unknown photographer.

Three years of Doonesbury are packed into this Trudeau tour de force (pardon my French), his 4th major anthology. These three years coincide with the election campaign, inauguration and first couple of years in office of "the First Cowboy." More than 500 dailies and 80 full-color Sundays. This is Trudeau at his trenchant best. Worth it just for the introduction by Gloria Steinem (if you're a Gloria Steinem fan).

5 out of 5 stars A journey back to a time now part of nostalgia but where the reality is often forgotten .......2007-04-10

The current Republican touting of Ronald Reagan and proclaiming of how great a president he was amuses me, as I am someone who was politically conscious through the years of his presidency. Reagan invented the massive federal deficits during peacetime that have plagued this country since then, with of course the exception of the Democratic administration of Bill Clinton. Those times were nowhere near as rosy as the Republicans proclaim, which made my reading of this book so interesting.
Trudeau's Doonesbury cartoons were based on current events and reading this book takes me back to the headlines of those years. There is the presidential campaign of 1980, where Carter, Reagan and John Anderson were all major players. The disastrous American intervention in Lebanon is once again brought up and when contrasted with the current involvement in Iraq, proves once again how little we have learned. At least Reagan had the courage and intelligence to recognize when it was time to cut and run. And who could forget Secretary of the Interior James Watt, a man who openly ridiculed the environmental movement and proved to be one of the politically dumbest people ever to serve in the cabinet. To the best of my knowledge, Watt was the first example of a born-again who used his religious beliefs as a rudder for the generation of his policies. It is somehow fitting that he was ultimately indicted on 18 felony counts and reached a plea agreement that kept him out of jail.
If you did not live through the early Reagan years, then these cartoons will probably not make sense to you. That is one of the unfortunate consequences of the best political cartoons in that they simply do not have a long shelf life. Once the context of their appearance fades, then they can be made incomprehensible. Nevertheless, they are still just as biting and entertaining as they were when they were a thorn in the fatside of the Republican group who was in power at that time.
