Book Description

Feng Shui is the ancient Oriental art of object placement. Believed to encourage chi, or energy, flow, Feng Shui can positively affect health, relationships, career, and finances. Just five years ago, Feng Shui was virtually unheard of in the West. Today, Feng Shui's popularity has soared predominately due to the efforts of one woman, Lillian Too--publicly acknowledged as "the face of Feng Shui worldwide." Lillian Too's books on the subject have become international best-sellers.

Element is proud to present The Fundamentals of Feng Shui, a comprehensive compilation of eight Lillian Too titles, plus additional Feng Shui instructional and introductory sections. Witty and wise, Lillian packs this full-color illustrated compendium with absolutely everything you could possibly need to know, including:

* The origins, principles, and practice of Feng Shui * The two major schools of Feng Shui, the Lo Shi Square, the Kua Numbers Formula, Dragon's Breath and Poison Arrows * Optimum placement for landscaping, furnishings, and energy * Feng Shui "cures" and "antidotes."

With specific sections devoted to wealth, fame, health, children, education, networking and career, you'll turn to this lavishly illustrated cloth original for success in every area of your life! Here's just a few of Lillian's tips:

* Wealth: Add richness to any room with the Chinese jade plant. Its succulent green leaves are symbolic of success. * Love: Check romantic compatibility with the Kua Formula. * Fame: Place eight special symbols within the home for fame. * Health: Position your bed for a restful, restorative night's sleep. * Children: Place your child's desk in the West for great grades. * Education: Carry a crystal to boost memory. * Networking: A decorative urn near the door welcomes mentors. * Career: Hang windchimes in your workspace to attract businesses, promotion, or success.

This great guide has something for everyone! Authoritative, yet accessible, The Fundamentals of Feng Shui even offers step-by-step photography on exercises to encourage positive energy.

4 out of 5 stars Great Beginner's Book!.......2003-02-02

I recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn the basics of feng shui. This is a very fundamental guide, but can make a lot of difference in the way you decorate your home or office. Of course, feng shui is not an art that can be easily or quickly grasped, but Ms. Too gives a very good taste of the concept.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended.......2001-02-27

Lillian Too's books are easy to understand. I have decided after purchasing her books that I will not buy any other books on Feng Shui except hers.

1 out of 5 stars Just a summary - don't expect answers.......2001-01-23

I was looking for a feng shui book that was instructional and explanatory with pictures and a basic introduction on how to set up my home.

I got all those things from the book, but I was disappointed at how superficial the writing was. This had about as much information as a magazine article.

I totally disagree with the previous reviews stating this was too technical. There ARE formulas you need to use to calculate your personal lucky number. Basically, it's a simple math equation. But this is very simple and easy to use. In fact, each chapter has the same formula to determine your personal direction of maximal auspiciousness. Once you've determined your lucky number, are you really going to forget it in between chapters?

In addition, parts of the book repeat advice and language -- almost verbatim -- from previous sections. The book needs significant editing, and a complete infusion of fresh photos. The stock images used in the book don't even show rooms and houses that are properly laid out. Captions don't match pictures, and often, the reader is left with even more questions about what the author is trying to convey.

If all you're looking for is a basic overview, you can get it from the Internet.

This book is not for the beginner---it can be along and confusing read---but if you have a grasp of feng shui then you will find it to be very helpful. I would say that this book complements beginnning books.

Do not be mislead by the title. This is not a book about fame. It is about how to use feng shui to win recognition and be noticed ... after following the tips here I was picked by my boss for an important job and now have greater responsibilities, a bigger role in decision making and of course more money. Thank you Lillian Too. Keep up the great work you are doing . Here in South Africa you have many fans !!! ...

Book Description

This book is a clear, easy-to-understand entry to the practical, usable fundamental principles of Landform Feng Shui, written by one of the very few traditionally-trained Masters of the art. First developed by pre-civilzation Chinese Hunter-gatherer tribes, Landform Feng Shui is by far the oldest school of Feng Shui. Briefly, Landform Feng Shui states that: All physical matter is condensed Chi (energy); all physical objects are passive Chi generators, radiating chi into the space around them where it has specific, predictable effects on physical, mental, emotional, social, financial, and spiritual aspects of people's lives; Chi is defined as either Yin or Yang; it is further divided into the qualities of wholesome Yin, wholesome Yang, and unwholesome Yin and Unwholesome Yang; the physical shape(s) of and in a neighborhood, landscape, garden, house, office, or interior, and their relationships with nearby shapes, determine the quantity and quality of the Chi they radiate. Learning Feng Shui involves a wholesome balance of Yin and a Yang in the student: direct, intuitive sensing of the Chi radiated by physical forms is Yin; conscious knowledge of Feng Shui's principles is Yang. Learning to sense form Chi is fairly easy for most people because Landform Feng Shui is simply an understanding of how people and nature have always interacted. If we live in harmony with natural energies, life naturally offers us social, romantic, financial, and other opportunities. Every concept in this book is based in the common sense, practical ways that Landform Feng Shui masters have learned to feel and make good use of natural energies, so that people can have abundant, wholesome Chi.

Landform Feng Shui has exactly the same philosophical basis as Traditional Chinese Medicine (acupuncture, Herbal medicine, Tuina healing massage, and using food as medicine), Tai Chi, I-Ching, Hsing-I, Ba Gua, Chinese caligraphy and painting, and Chinese Taoism and Buddhism. This foundation is easy to understand because Dr. Hsu began learning these arts as a child from his father, who was a highly-respected master. He also studied with numerous other masters of various related arts, who lived with his family. He has lived in America for almost thirty years so his command of English is very good. To round out his awareness, he entered deeply into a study of Sufi teachings and Zen.

Sorry but I'm with the other reviewer - Lillian Too's books seem to rehash the same stuff over and over again. Also I find her very confusing. I'm fascinated by feng shui but think there are much better books out there to be honest.

1 out of 5 stars ALL THE BOOKS ARE SIMILAR !.......2000-04-12

I notice that the books written by Lilian Too are almost similar and I agreed a reader from the U.S. that Lilian Too's Feng Shui books are aims for commercial and money making, and not really helping people to overcome difficult and problems by using Feng Shui.

5 out of 5 stars Acknowledging ones career.......2000-02-26

It is beyond examination that Lillian's exemplifies the ideas of feng shui, and brings it about in a really easy and comprehensible manner. It takes feng shui to a new level, adapting the essential elements of theory and incorporates it towards different aspects of one's life.

It embelishes the essence in understanding focal and directing ones energy towards ones center. It is through a center that we as individuals live and affect one another. This book provides a prime example in understanding and able to focus our energy in a series of manner to enhance our productivity and life.

5 out of 5 stars Recipes for the Soul and Spirit.......2002-11-27

Step into comfort food that is not only satisfying to the palate but soothes the soul and spirit. This book is especially endearing at this time of year when one turns to thoughts of cooking special food when coming together with loved ones.

I had the pleasure of hearing Lynn Ruth Miller's humorous story about her mother's Hanukkah blintzes at a reading in Oakland where I was also on the panel as a contributor to another book in the Cup of Comfort series. So much goes into the preparation of food than just ingredients. These recipes reflect the history, family lore, adventures, culture and of course the doses of love that are necessities in good food.

My daughter was flipping through the book checking out recipes for Thanksgiving and was constantly reading out loud the anecdotes and heartfelt stories. Dutch Breakfast Bread and Abuelita's Rice Pudding are just two examples of the richness of recipes and stories in this contribution. These recipes offer a pinch of faith, a dash of strength, a tablespoon of love and a cup of comfort, a gift to America.

i've seen a few of those books who claim to portray a topic throught the years by showing exsamples from many filds and areas, this is one of those books, and really - not the best i've seen.

the quality and size of the photographs are pretty good, and the ocver's nice and all, but the choice of artists seem random at best, you can't make a 100 pages book to explain the whole history of nude and erotic photography, and even if you could - that's hardly the bast way to do it. there are several photos by every artist which means the book shows less then 20 photographes in general, and not the most famouse, inovating or interesting in this fild, some of the choices looked very odd to me. there's a feel that the book was just a collection of some of the photos the publisher had a right to publish and that's why they go in.

don't get me wrong, it's a nice book with quite a few interesting phtographs which i enjoy fliping through, it's just doesn't even begin to do what it's promising to do which is to review nude and erotic phtography through out the century.

note - very good value for money, which makes it a very nice gift option for somone artistic who doesn't own a lot of photography books.

          3 out of 5 stars A BOOK WORTH A PEEK.......2003-04-20

**The Female Form - a private view**

The book I have in my library is published by Carlton Books Limited, 1999 and represent externally the more economic hardcover formats. It contains a total of 96 pages with both color and duotone photographs. The selling price is usually economic so it is well worth a peek. What you get is an expanded view of what any photographic magazine would provide in any female nude theme, and all in hard covers for a good shelf life.

There is an emphasis on 1990's work by several popular photographers, some work from the 80's and a few early last century.
Several of the photographs chosen for this book have a fetish undertone, if not outright so. Perhaps it was typical of the 90's photography or are preferences of the author of compiling this book, Mr. Tony Mitchell. The book contains work by Jan Saudek, Lichfield, Karo, Craig Morey, Trevor Watson, Monika Robl to mention only a few.
The book has only two pages of introductory text, and one page showing the contents and naming the work.

This book stays in my library because of some stunning photographs within, views such as; Paolo Curto's "Untitled" on page 26, Karo's "Pflaster" on page 33, Trevor Watson's "Untitled" on page 49 and Monika Robl's "Sappho" on page 53.

          1 out of 5 stars Don't buy it unseen.......2003-01-09

This book was very disappointing. It's not at all what I expected -- though other reviewers did warn that many of the pictures are just plain goofy, and this is true. There are maybe a handful of sexy images but as a whole the book is just an eyesore. I flipped through it once and immediately packed it back up for a refund.

The moral I draw from this is: don't buy a book like this online. Go to a bookstore where you can flip through it before buying. If I had done that, I would have saved myself the cost of the return shipping, and perhaps found a better book.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best of its genre.......2002-11-20

It was okay but I found the book on the Michelin tire calendars to be more intriquing. Many well done pictures but also many just plain weird ones also. I know "art" and parts of this book were not "art". Nothing was overly pornographic, except perhaps in context but just too many goofy pictures. At least there were none which would fit right in with the current Penthouse magazine's new declaration of tastelessness for bad photography of silicone endowed women.

5 out of 5 stars Not Just Sexy, But Great Value As Well.......2001-12-27

The only problem I had with this book was its title. "Well-photographed, slightly kinky pictures of naked young women" would have been a good alternative. Apart from that, Tony Mitchell does a very good job of showcasing the work of fourteen talented photographers. Moreover, with 96 pages of agreeably lubricious images, it represents remarkably good value. Highly recommended.
