A decent book.......2005-02-24
I liked West Coast rooms better. The rooms were more contemporary overall. East Coast rooms did have much more of a variety of styles. A little of something for everyone. They were well styled, nice photos. I wouldn't purchase this if I were looking for an instructional design book though.

I really enjoyed this book. Most east coast design that is not country in orgin is very traditional. This book features a very nice array of styles to choose from. More modern and hip designs are found with a smattering of the east coast thrown in...

From a striking 1905 portrait of Geronimo to the seal-hunting Eskimos of Nunivak Island, Edward S. Curtis's pictures reflect the diversity of cultures that existed among the various Indian tribes. This book is an indispensable reference for any artist who aspires to paint or draw Native Americans as part of their Western art if they want an authentic representation of those forgotten times.
[As an aside, I managed to find a hardback copy of this book, so they are out there if one looks hard enough for one.]
An Extraordinary Photographic Legacy .......2005-03-15
Edward Sheriff Curtis dedicated his life's work to documenting the customs and lifeways of the Native American peoples of North America. This extraordinary book includes some of the best photographic examples from Curtis' twenty volume masterpiece, "The North American Indian," one of the most significant representations of traditional indigenous culture ever produced.
Curtis was one of two official photographers for the 1899 Harriman expedition to Alaska.
On his return, he stopped in northern Montana, accompanied by George Bird Grinell, editor of Forest and Stream. There he witnesses the deeply sacred Sundance of the Piegan and Blackfoot tribes, a sight which transformed his life. Grinell said to him at that time, "Take a good look. We're not going to see this kind of thing much longer. It already belongs to the past". It became clear to him then, that he was to record, with pen and camera, the life of the North American Indian.
Beginning in 1900 and continuing over the next thirty years, Edward S. Curtis, sometimes called the "Shadow Catcher" by tribes' people, took over 40,000 photographs and recorded ethnographic information from over eighty American Indian tribal groups, ranging from the Eskimo or Inuit people in the North to the Hopi people of the Southwest. In the end, the work comprised twenty textual volumes and twenty portfolios with over 2,000 illustrations
They are organized by tribes and culture areas, encompassing the Great Plains, Great Basin, Plateau Region, Southwest, California, Pacific Northwest, and Alaska. Featured here are some of the photographer's most impressive pictures, including: seal-hunting Eskimos of Nunivak Island, portraits of three Piegan chiefs on horseback, portraits of Chief Red Cloud, Ogalala Sioux, Geronimo, Chief Joseph, Nez Perce, the magnificent Canon de Chelly, (Navaho), and one of my favorites, Kotsuis and Hohhuq - Nakoaktok - 2 masked performers in a winter dance.
These reproductions are a precious American legacy and an artistic masterpiece worthy of any collection.

Best Image from 30-Years of Documentary on Native Indian.......2003-03-09
This book contains the best black/white images from the original complete collection. The portraits of Indian and the past moment of their daily life were captured with their character and dignity.
It is a marvelous image collection (Edward spent 30 years to make this 20-volume encyclopedia) of history. It represents the love of the dying population, and records the broken dream of native Indian.

This is an incredible collection of pictures. Piles on piles of pictures. But... The pictures are small. I was hoping for a collection of large pictures(i.e. 8x10) but the majority of them are approximately 4x5. It's a wonderful book, but don't expect full sized images. Irregardless it's a great buy for the price. You'll have a hard time finding a collection of pictures as big as this(even if the pictures are small) :)

absolutely stunning recollection of his complete photos. the reproductions are somewhat small, but easily viewable. such a complete set is so awe inspiring, anyone who has an interest or a love for native ameircan history/american history must have this book. absolute beauty.

This book, as does all of Mr. Lindstrand's work, shows a very high level of skill through sketchwork done on a huge variety of animals both land and air. There are many birds of prey showing great detail and nuance of differences between each one shown. I had hoped for more work on the Eagle. While there are some good pointers and sketch workups on the Bald Eagle I have yet to find a viable sketch of one of these majestic birds while in flight. this seems true of the other bird depictions in the book as well. The other animals of the cold country north are all shown very nicely in all their magesty, but these birds are lifeless and flightless for the most part and I was sorely dissappointed for that reason. The sheer number of birds included is astounding and I had hoped for more activity of form and flight shown in the work than what I actually found to be there.

This book has an extremely wide selection of animals showing actual pictures, footprints, evironments, and drawings of the animals themselves in a variety of poses. Also included, are numerous field notes with regard to habitat, animal behavior, and likely scenarios for drawing these animals in natural settings.

This is a wonderful book for those seeking inspiration on creating an open, airy home that lets the outdoors in. If you love windows then this is definitely the book for you.
The designs of over forty different architects and designers are shown here. Each tells a bit about the featured home and their design approach. There are several large color photos of various views in each home, with captions giving the details. The styles are predominantly modern and clean looking, but in a wide variety of styles and decor. There are no cute country ducks or rooms overstuffed with flower prints.
I loved the rooms with Asian accents. There is a wall of botanical prints in one home that is simply gorgeous - I'm sure I will do something similar in the future. The use of flower arrangements is fantastic. It amazes me how something as simple as a bouquet of sunflowers or vase of roses can really make these rooms into something special.
This book has been a great help to me. I know I will use some of these elements and ideas when I get to build my dream home.

Excellent Addition to DC Range.......2005-03-30
Legacy is an excellent addition to the DC Heroclix range. It adds some very powerful figures (mostly Uniques) in the form of Ares, General Zod, Mongul, Ultra-Man, and several more Kingdom Come characters. But the basic line of figures is also impressive, with Arsenal, Captain Atom, the Demon, Hourman, Jade, Major Force, Mister Freeze, Mister Terrific, Obsidian, Superboy, and Superwoman, among many others.
The sculpts on these new figures are generally quite good, although the poses for Ravager and Talia could have used a little more differentiation. My current favorites from the new set are the sculpts for the Demon, Mister Freeze, and the Kingdom Come Green Lantern.
I have an objection to the rating on Arsenal--he has a higher value than his mentor Green Arrow! Actually, Arsenal's rating is probably okay; Green Arrow was undervalued and needs to have a corrected dial (perhaps in the upcoming ICONS set?).
The new teams--Calculators, Crime Syndicate, and Outsiders--are good additions to the series, although the selection of characters for the Calculators doesn't seem to track with the group of villains most recently seen in IDENTITY CRISIS. And I like the addition of the bystanders, conditions, and feats. The DC expansions for Heroclix, in my estimation, continue to outshine their Marvel counterparts.
