Book Description

In the tradition of the highly successful Cottages by the Sea, this book takes readers to the Sedona desert, where the clean air, breathtaking views, and wonderfully mild weather attract more than four million visitors each year. Stunning new photographs evoke the fantasy of owning a home in the desert. From a soft stone house inspired by the pre-Colombian tribes who used the desert as a ceremonial meeting place to a home built in the tradition of Frank Lloyd Wright to a cutting edge architectural gem, Desert Retreats demonstrates a rich variety of approaches to living in this beautiful but harsh environment. Culturally rich, chic with celebrity, and known for its restorative powers, Sedona, with its influential style, is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the U.S. and a perfect place to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

A dream book for all climates, Desert Retreats will appeal to all residents of and visitors to
the Southwest.

Book Description

The foremost color problem identified by artists lies in the mixing of greens. They want to be able to mix grays, oranges, browns and violets of course, but first of all greens.

Our eyes are very sensitive to green and we can identify a vast range. Artists need access to this range if their work is to be at all realistic. Apart from a few standard premixed greens, the result is often very much trial and error.

This pocket sized book, in our 'Color Notes' series, offers the artist and craft worker instant access to a vast range of easily mixed, predictable greens. Using a simple step by step approach the reader is shown how to produce yellow-greens, blue-greens, bright, dull, vivid, opaque and transparent greens. Then how to make any of these lighter or darker. Not only is full information given on the mixing of the colors, but the book also offers a reference when seeking instant color guidance. Suitable for any media.

                        5 out of 5 stars tattootime rules!.......2000-07-04

do you think you are serious about tattooing? consider yourself a bit of an expert on it? and you don't have this book? (not even any of the other tattootime issues?) then you should re-think and re-consider! anyone serious about tattooing, its backgrounds, its history, its important figures should have this book. and all the other four issues. they all are out on hardy marks publications; the publishing company owned and run by the great don ed hardy. whom you should know.

this book was one of the main reasons why tribal tattoos became so popular again. (published back in 1982!) there are some articles in it by leo zulueta, one of the great masters, if not THE great master, of tribal tattooing. you'll find information about tattooing in samoa and borneo, pre-technology aspects of tattooing, tattooing names / letters, the swastika and its meaning in different cultures over the centuries, american tattooer paul rogers, and one of the greatest and most important american tattoo artists ever: sailor jerry collins.

plus, this is good for reference but bad for your bank account, there are a lot of suggestions for further reading! (i ended up spending over $ 100 on books recommended here.)

if you already do know in-depth about the subjects covered in this book, then maybe it is not for you. but still, imho, all the tattootime issues are a must-have in any serious collector's library. i keep checking them for all kinds of references. it's a shame hardy marks are not planning on doing any more issues.

From the author: In this article I begin by sketching the main events in a recent dispute over the allocation of fishing quota among Maori. I seek to shed some light on the ideological grounding of this dispute in the simultaneous individualisation and tribalisation of Maori society since the late 19th century. Because the New Zealand nation is now imagined as an essentially binary one (bicultural, or treaty-based) there is no secure place for urban indigeneity which constitutes a third voice. The inability of urban Maori Authorities to gain a share of the fishing quota is a reflection of this binarism.

                                      Book Description

Explicit sexual imagery has erupted in every medium and on every surface. While some react to it by pointing and laughing, hardly anyone has stopped to seriously consider its impact. Behind this phenomenon lies the normalization of pornography, which along with the complete turnaround in social attitudes to it, has been one of the most momentous developments in contemporary life. In Designing Pornotopia, Rick Poynor explores recent advertising and design and the invasion of sexual imagery into everyday life, revealing how advertising walks the fine line between prudish and vulgar imagery.

Developing the discussion of Poynor's previous anthology, Obey the Giant, Designing Pornotopia covers a wide area of subjects, from magazines, billboard advertising, branding, illustration, photography, tattoos, and music graphics to architecture and includes interviews with architect Rem Koolhaas and maverick American graphic designer and performance artist Elliott Earls. Along the way Poynor reassesses the early work of Peter Saville and tracks the unstoppable rise of Stefan Sagmeister, among others. Poynor's concise, riveting prose constantly challenges the reader with strong and thought-provoking arguments. In its timeliness and poignancy, this anthology is a truly indispensable addition to the bookshelf of anyone interested in visual culture and its effects on our daily lives.

4 out of 5 stars understanding designing pornotopia.......2006-11-16

this review is largely in answer to the previous reviewer's review - john d. i think context is important with this book. rick poynor is a design critic for eye magazine, and this book is an anthology of his essays over the last three to four years. while i agree that there is not much "depth" to each essay, i think that, taken as a collection, poynor's writing provides a great STARTING POINT for further criticism, analysis, or study. he's noting a trend within visual culture. not to be taken as anything too scholarly, he comments on the trends as concisely as possible for magazine format. so for all design students, design geeks, culture geeks, this book is by no means going to illuminate everything about pornotopia for you, but it will plant seeds which you can either nourish or ignore.

                                      buy it, it's interesting.

3 out of 5 stars Is that an idea under there, or are you just happy to see me?.......2006-11-15

I like to take chances on books, and this is one of them. I hope someone else comes along to write something really insightful and postive about this book, 'cause I'm not. "...concise, riveting prose" Maybe for lack of ideas. "truly indispensable addition" Maybe if you're a dunderhead that thinks life has changed a little since Madonna turned oour entire world upside down--uh, almost--with her shocking self-expose' of a coffee table book. Sorry, I find that many of these essays meander far from the sexy pitch. I was hoping Rem Koolhaus would fill me in on why his quirky boxes should be getting me all hot and bothered, but mostly I learned he has an elusive and dark presence in your company. And then I frittered away a few more mornings with the usual claptrap of dingy magazines that make something of sexual toys beyond their ostensible function, and designer rehash of Pop strategies. OK, there are some essays here that relate to the title. But for the most, I find the author "not on task." Appropriately, I got all excited by the titilating come-on, but in my dull straight world, the dish is a guy. I deflate.
