Courthouses Of California arrived too late for holiday mention but will enjoy a year-round audience, from library collections specializing in California history to those interested in the state's architecture in general and the rise of California courthouses in particular. The tour is organized by county and covers the entire state, picking the finer of California's older courthouses and providing surveys of its history, restorations, and events which have taken place within its walls. Fine black and white photos throughout.

5 out of 5 stars From symbol to metaphor -Ricoeur's idealism revisited (In Spanish).......2006-03-24

5 out of 5 stars For the Student of Geneologies.......2006-03-01

Ricoeur's Rule of Metaphor is the missing link for anyone truly interested in getting at the roots of semiotics, semantics and hermeneutics. For the student of Western Civilization's grammar and logical structure, it provides a genesis of postmodern critique.

5 out of 5 stars Metaphor is the message.......2003-08-19

The problem is not that fiction shows itself to be a necessity for speculation (Ricoeur admits that it does) but that the distinctiveness between the fictions of art and the fictions of discourse/philosophy has been muddied by the exhaustion of both sets of metaphors. In other words, had we a language full of vital and living metaphors, we would then more easily recognize the distinctiveness of poetic and philosophic metaphor. He shows how Heidegger both acknowledges the distinction and then, in his attempts to step forward, slides down into the muddy waters where the distinction is lost. As a consequence, the later Heidegger shows the way only by his effort, not by his accomplishment.

Ricoeur published this in 1971. He uses Anglo-American philosophy of language extensively. I particularly enjoyed his ability to blend work in aesthetics beginning with Aristotle's Poetics down to some living philosophers who I did not know had published in that area. For instance, he locates in Nelson Goodman's reliance on "expression" in art (what we'd usually call 'style') a transcendent dimension (a 'more' than the sum of the elements in a work of art) as parallel with what in discourse might be called intention (I forget the exact word he used). But again, discourse then has its version of a transcendent dimension that communicates as the sense of the whole -- if a thinker manages to pull that off.

What was new to me (in addition to the recent scholarship on classical sources he used) was his thought. My impulse is to compare him unfavorably with Heidegger, by belittling Ricoeur's academic philosophy to Heidegger's existential declaration of the human condition. But he's just as good, in his own way. And while I could complain about his predisposition to work from within the respectable tradition of our western Judeo-Christian civilization (hence he remains 'God's' spokesman), he does not denigrate but uses the outstanding accomplishments of those for whom that tradition has become alien.

    Book Description

Pierre Bourdieu is now recognized as one of the key contemporary critics of culture and the visual arts. Art Rules analyses Bourdieu's work on the visual arts to provide the first overview of his theory of culture and aesthetics. Bourdieu's engagement with both postmodernism and the problem of aesthetics provides a new way of analyzing the visual arts. His interest is in how artistic fields function and the implications their processes have for art and artistic practice. Art Rules applies Bourdieu's theory of practice to the three fields of museums, photography and painting. These practical examples are used as a springboard to address visual arts in the 21st Century and to establish Bourdieu's rules of art.

Brings a fresh perspective to communication research by constructing a theory of communication based on the use of rules for manipulating symbols. Shimanoff answers such questions as: how can rules be inferred from behaviour? What relationships are there between rules and behaviour? What are the best methods to approach rules research? How can rules research contribute to communication theory?

As the title suggests, this book is about finding alternatives in language teaching. It is not a typical how-to book because it does not tell you how to teach, but shows the importance in breaking new ground and finding what works (and doesn't) work for you. Highly recommended. Another book that is useful (though not focussed on teaching) is "Lateral Thinking" by Edward De Bono.

          Book Description

In art theory, as in cultural life generally, there has a long been tension between theory and artistic practice. The desire to resolve these tensions has been a principal impulse shaping artistic work and criticism over the last century. The last decade has seen the emergence of a broad, interdisciplinary body of theoretical work with a distinctive relationship to artistic practice, providing a common reference in artworks to the principles and vocabularies of theory.

The sixteen essays in this collection were originally presented at an international conference entitled `Art as Theory / Theory and Art,' held at the University of Ottawa in late 1991. The contributors - critics, curators, and practising artists from Canada, the United States, Europe, and Australia, look at the current relationships between theory and practice in the fields of art, communication, and cultural studies from a wide range of viewpoints. Areas of interest include the institutionalization of theory, theories of vision, gender theory and feminist positions, and theory in a post-colonial context. This volume answers some important new questions about the points of intersection between theory and visual art.

              Book Description

In Kids Rule! Sarah Banet-Weiser examines the cable network Nickelodeon in order to rethink the relationship between children, media, citizenship, and consumerism. Nickelodeon is arguably the most commercially successful cable network ever. Broadcasting original programs such as Dora the Explorer, SpongeBob SquarePants, and Rugrats (and producing related movies, Web sites, and merchandise), Nickelodeon has worked aggressively to claim and maintain its position as the preeminent creator and distributor of television programs for America’s young children, tweens, and teens. Banet-Weiser argues that a key to its success is its construction of children as citizens within a commercial context. The network’s self-conscious engagement with kids—its creation of a “Nickelodeon Nation” offering choices and empowerment within a world structured by rigid adult rules—combines an appeal to kids’ formidable purchasing power with assertions of their political and cultural power.

Banet-Weiser draws on interviews with nearly fifty children as well as with network professionals; coverage of Nickelodeon in both trade and mass media publications; and analysis of the network’s programs. She provides an overview of the media industry within which Nickelodeon emerged in the early 1980s as well as a detailed investigation of its brand-development strategies. She also explores Nickelodeon’s commitment to “girl power,” its ambivalent stance on multiculturalism and diversity, and its oft-remarked appeal to adult viewers. Banet-Weiser does not condemn commercial culture nor dismiss the opportunities for community and belonging it can facilitate. Rather she contends that in the contemporary media environment, the discourses of political citizenship and commercial citizenship so thoroughly inform one another that they must be analyzed in tandem. Together they play a fundamental role in structuring children’s interactions with television.

                Book Description

The rapid technological developments during the later half of the 20th century have demanded materials that are stronger, capable of use at much higher temperatures, more corrosion-resistant, and much less expensive than those currently used. These demands become even more significant on the threshold of the new century and the millennium. Significant improvements in properties can only be achieved by processing the materials under far-from-equilibrium (or non-equilibrium) conditions. Several new processing technologies have been developed during the past few decades including, rapid solidification, spray forming, mechanical alloying, ion mixing, vapor deposition, laser processing and plasma processing.

Remarkable advances have been made in recent years in the science and technology of these processes used to synthesize, characterize, and apply these materials processed under non-equilibrium conditions. Some of these techniques have evolved from laboratory curiosity to commercial-scale manufacturing in just a few years. In other cases, industrial necessity prompted development of the technology, and the science followed later.

The chapters in this book have been written by people who are world-recognized experts in their respective fields. Each chapter describes the principles, processing techniques, special features of the materials produced, and their applications. An extensive list of references is provided at the end of each chapter that will facilitate location of additional information on specific aspects of any technique.

A coast lover's coffee-table book, Big Sur to Big Basin is both stirringly beautiful and exceptionally informative. In a book about Big Sur you'd expect to find sun-splashed sea stacks and astonishing redwoods, but here photographer Larry Ulrich surprises and inspires with mission bells, cherry blossoms, storybook houses, forest streams, bucolic grazers, and prickly fields from the artichoke center of the world (Castroville, that is).

Long-time California resident Pamela Verduin Cain has done a thorough job of finding and recounting stories that give the photos interest beyond the visual. There are Pebble Beach golf legends, secret nature hikes, famous authors' and artists' haunts, and palate-tempting descriptions of choice restaurants along the way.

The book is divided into six sections: Big Sur, Carmel, Pebble Beach, Pacific Grove, Monterey, and Santa Cruz. A hand-illustrated map highlights 25 points of interest (such as the Steinbeck House, Point Lobos State Reserve, and Monterey Bay Aquarium) to help travelers actually find some of the stunning spots captured here. In the meantime, pour yourself a glass of California Chardonnay, relax in your easiest chair, and take a panoramic journey through these dreamy pages. --Kathryn True

I like this book the best of all in my library.
It is outstanding in photographic images.

                  Highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars good, but not great.......2003-11-04

From a photographic standpoint, the book is good, but not great. The pictures are nice, but not high art. It is not on the level with Muench, Wolfe, etc. It is more of a book to remember the area by.

4 out of 5 stars see for yourself..........2002-05-25

Big Sur to Big Basin is the only book I have experienced that fully portrays the feel of the area. Fantastic photography complements the books detailed narrative, and if there ever was a book to remember a visit to a region, then this is it.

The California coast is a wonderful place to explore, and in particular, the Big Sur area is one of my favourites. From the mighty trees, to the wonder of the rugged coastline, there is something for everyone.

Larry's photography leaves you thinking "I have to see this for myself". So we did. Twice now!

Buy this book if you ever want to travel to the area. Buy this book also if you just want to experience the area without leaving your armchair. Most of all, have this book on your coffee table, and you will always have something to remember from a fabulous trip to a unique part of the world.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking Pictures with Recounting Memories.......2002-02-15

I had a getaway to Big Sur last summer and was stunned by the breathtaking view of where the ocean meets the sky. About a few months later I picked up a copy of Big Sur to Big Basin at a local bookstore and began a virtual re-visit of Big Sur. Like many pictorials with pages of astonishing sunsets, Pamela Cain, a former Carmel resident, recounted anecdotes and memories of hers that make the photos alive. The redwoods, the beaches, cheery blossoms, the meandering streams, Pebble Beach golf courses, Monterey bay...Big Sur to Big Basin is your window to panoramic view in central Californian coast.

5 out of 5 stars Breath-taking scenery & revealing history behind the picture.......1998-08-23

This book offers the reader a bird's eye view of the breath-taking scenery along California's coastal highway...and the history behind the pictures. Pam Cain's stories make Larry Ulrich's pictures come alive...it makes me, a former Carmel resident now living in Connecticut, homesick...a wonderful trip back home

4 out of 5 stars Allergies? This book can help.......2004-05-09

In reading this book, I learned some things I hadn't known before. For instance, I didn't know a food could affect another food's digestion process.

There are charts provided in the book, which the author has graciously allowed to be copied. These combined with the information in the appendices help to plan menus. Chapter summaries provide a quick reference, too.

Along with personal experience, the author has obviously done her homework, though I would like to have references more directly connected with the text(footnotes, perhaps?).

If you have suffered from food allergies this book's simple, concise read could really help.

                            5 out of 5 stars mtmmog.......2004-04-14

This book covers the author's struggle with food allergies and presents her years of experience in creating a rotation diet that allowed her to function in a world filled with artificial foods. Before I read this book, I knew that fast food hamburgers had too much fat or that my tapwater had flouride. But this book really opened my eyes to how pervasive food additives really are and how difficult it is to create a diet that eliminates these.

The presentation of ingredients was helpful, since they are the foundation of proper menu building. I also wasn't familiar with the concept of rotation diets until I read this book.

The principles and ideas presented are sound and helpful.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I had learned this stuff long ago!.......2004-03-26

This book is excellent for learning how to regain strong health, even if you don't have food allergies! A friend turned me on to it and I was fascinated to read about many little things that impact health that I never thought of before. For instance, different types of salt affect health differently. This book described what kind to look for to replenish your body's mineral supplies. Something else I never thought about is that picky eater kids really do like natural foods as they don't contain chemicals that kids can taste. I appreciated the many insights this book provided! It's truly useful and well thought out.

1 out of 5 stars Too basic, too vague, too poorly written.......2004-01-26

If you know absolutely nothing about wellness, this book might be useful -- but, by 2004, most folks know that fast food isn't as healthy as organic vegetables, much tap water is laden with chemicals, and people can improve their health by changing their diets. This might have been news in 1966, but it isn't news now.

The book not only preaches, it preaches badly: the author's writing begs for editing, as she clearly doesn't have much skill as an author. Clearly, though, the unknown press clearly doesn't have an editor on its staff.

Well-intentioned, but much less useful than most other books on the topic. It is not worth the price of the book to get the pages and pages of record-keeping sheets.

                            I sent it back.

1 out of 5 stars Very little value for the price.......2003-10-27

Good news first: The most valuable section of the book is a list of all foods, organized according to biological classification. This can help identify which foods are risky, based on a person's known food sensitivities. This is a more informative list of this type than I have seen anywhere else.

The bad news is that the main text of the book is lightweight and preachy--going on about macrobiotic principles and avoidance of saturated fats, etc. While these things are worth learning about, they are not what the book advertises to teach. The book is supposed to be a practical guide to creating a rotation diet. All it provides on this topic is a bunch of worksheets to help you visualize your rotation of ingredients, not meals. I was hoping for much more--such as recipe advice, menu planning, and kitchen management under the rigorous and complex rules I must follow to become healthier.

The thing that really got my goat, is that the author states four times that you can hide your dietary problems at social events, by drinking water and expecting other people not to be concerned. This is simply not true. People will notice, and they will ask you, and try to be helpful. Most commonly, people think I'm dieting to lose weight, and start an aggravating conversation about how I'm already thin enough.

Living with food allergies is time-consuming and stressful, and this book just does not help. Furthermore, it makes no attempt to introduce you to the really delicious and satisfying meals that you can prepare, by making modifications to basic recipes.

I have to say that I was a bit disappointed by this book. I've come to expect very witty visual humour from the mind of Plympton, as in his animations.. this small compilation lacked in almost ALL artistic skill, eschewing that for shots of verbal double entendres and small vulgarities. I laughed at a few pages, but they were definitely few - the simpler the images are (the less distraction by the poor drawing quality), the funnier they seemed to be. Notable are Arch Nemeses and Henry David Thoreau... aside from that, as time passes and his illustrations are from later and later in his carreer, they DO improve and become much funnier. Start at the back of this book and work your way forward....
