The book focuses on tropical climate but some of the theory can be applied to other climates; the difference in application is clearly delineated.

Wonderful Useful Information!.......2002-01-04
What a relief it was to find this book!
After ordering and returning 'Architectural Design for Tropical Regions' by Cleveland Salmon (avoid Salmon's book, unless you don't already know that "the sun can be very bright when the sky is clear and the sunlight is intense"!), this book came to my rescue.
Packed with detailed information and design strategies, along with good illustrations, this book is well suited to architects or well-educated laymen (it is NOT written at a grade school level). I was at first hesitant to order this book, as little information was provided by Amazon. After reading it cover to cover more than once, I'm happy to recommend CLIMATE RESPONSIVE DESIGN as one of my two best books for hot humid building design.
(The other favorite is COURTYARDS: Aesthetic, Social & Thermal Delight. Not just a "pretty picture book," Courtyards contains lots of highly useful information (charts, graphs, formulas) as well as wonderful color & B&W photos, plus line drawings.)
Climate Responsive Design has provided a wealth of solid, useful, pertinent information while working on projects for the Yucatan, where the climate ranges from hot humid in the summer/rainy months, to warm humid in winter/'dry' months, to WHEW in April & May (hot hot hot & maybe humid or not).

A very impresive book.......2003-03-06
I had already been impressed by "WWI In Photographs" by the same authour. WWII, however, has been more impresed and contains a larger number of pictures than the former. Do not expect too much from the comments from the authour -please, do not missunderstand- since although they are accurate, they are also brief (this is clearly a "pictures" book).

This textbook presupposes no prior knowledge of phonology or phonetics, and takes the learner step by step through the various stages and areas of the discipline without sacrificing rigor or breadth of coverage. The book's extraordinary clarity makes it readily understandable by anyone with a keen interest in phonology. The substance of phonology is more constant and more general than the limitations inherent in any particular theory or formalism may suggest. The book therefore provides a coherent account for beginner-students, rooted primarily - but by no means exclusively - in the phonology of English. No particular theory or formal apparatus is preferred over another; instead, the essence of phonology is provided in the most neutral possible way, for the maximum benefit of the reader. The book avoids entanglement in doctrinal disputes and formal minutiae, and aims instead for the general and the permanent. The book reviews all the major advances that have taken place in generative phonology over the past thirty years, including the recent Optimality Theory. Its many pedagogical features encourage interaction with the reader, and include a wealth of check-points, chapter previews and summaries, lists of key points, and exercises for further practice.

Excellent text for a Phonology course, but not for self study.......2007-02-13
This textbook does a good job of explaining the basics of phonology. It uses a variety of languages to exemplify and explain the concepts like palatalization, nasals matching place of articulation of the following consonant, and so on. It doesn't depend just on English to make the case for these. It does a decent job of giving all sides of the story by explaining a broad range of theories in phonological linguistics. It starts out with some basics of phonetics, but if you have no background in phonetics, you'll want a more comprehensive starter.
That said, I used this book because my professor assigned it for the phonology course I took, and without the class discussions, I probably wouldn't have understood any of it. As the professor said when I mentioned that, "that's why you come to class."
So--I would not suggest this book if you're looking for a self-study resource; however, as part of a course with a knowledgeable professor, it's a good text.

taking a course which references this book, I'd say to all professors... keep looking. Decidedly un-perspicuous. At times maddening. Sorry to not be more constructive, but I've got this assignment due...
A course in indecisiveness.......2001-05-16
A Course in Phonology seemed to me to be a course in bad editing. The one thing that most kept this book from being helpful in the learning of phonology is that it never used the same terminology chapter to chapter. The terminology switches were just assumed by the author to be known by the reader. The glossary did not have entries for any of these terminology switches, in fact the glossary had precious few entries that gave definitions past its own root word. The second annoying thing about this book were the homework assignments at the end of each chapter. There was no answer key, and they spent an entire chapter discussing rules for English phonology, then decide to give French, Catalan, and some bizzare Micronesian language as the assignments all of which had different rules that were discussed in the chapter. The accompanying workbook also had it's problems among which was the missing answer key.
Not what I was hoping for.......2001-05-08
As an introduction to autosegemental phonology, this text was a disappointment. While the authors obviously have a great deal of knowledge about and experience with the theory, I found the discussion to be incomplete in many places and the examples to be frequently mismatched to the discussion. There are serious problems with the practice problem sets at the end of each chapter as well.
Specifically:
1) the terminology used in these exercises is not consisent throughout the book or even in connection with the chapter they are intended to reinforce.
2) no solution set is available to which one can turn when no satisfactory solution is evident (a great disadvantage to the professor).
3) frequently the discussion in a chapter presents rules and justifications for English only and then the practice problems deal with languages that obey completely different sets of norms (and the rules may or may not have been identified as language-specific).
An overarching problem is that the discussion presented by Roca and Johnson fails to account for the fact that the operations of phonetics and phonology are language-specific, and so much of what is presented deals with overgeneralizations. Of even greater concern from a theoretical point of view is their inconsistent dealings with the importance of diachronic factors. While declaring on one hand that factoring out diachronic linguistics is key to the autosegmental approach, the authors in other places invoke history to resolve problems that cannot be solved autosegmentally.
In sum, this is a confusing, incomplete text in serious need of revision.

It contains over a hundred exercises, arranged in order of difficulty within each section, and covering the areas of distinctive features, underspecification, syllables, stress, tone, the phonology/morphology interface, phonological domains, derivational formalism, and Optimality Theory. As an accompanying volume, it is specifically related to the chapters and sections of A Course in Phonology, and it includes an Exercise Cross-Reference Table to facilitate its use.

A TALENT WHO LEFT US TOO SOON.......2005-10-07
The late Luis Martinez Roca was a talent that left us much too soon. The Spanish-born artist would first make a name for himself working on various comic strips and other projects in the UK. We would later begin working on the Warren line of magazines such as Eerie, Creepy, and most notably Vampirella. Roca passed away suddenly in 1998 but left behind a wonderful legacy of beautiful women and fantasy art. Thanks to SQP, Roca's work is being preserved and reaching many new fans.
This collection is represents a marvelous sampling of his pencil work. Roca's style is the very essence of heroic swords & sorcery with larger than life heroes, evil villains, and buxom, gorgeous women. The book has several of Roca's Conan drawings and very few artists outside of Frazetta and maybe Boris were able to capture the power and savagery of Robert E. Howard's barbarian hero the Roca did. Page 10 features perhaps my favorite Conan piece in the book as he squares off against a giant spider to rescue a girl while a wizard lurks menacingly in the background. It's a great piece!
The Art of Roca isn't all about Swords & Sorcery however. As mentioned, this is really a sampling of Roca's art and thus features a diversity of drawings. There are historical drawings drawing on Roman and pirate themes, as well a number of gothic-themed drawings. My favorite is perhaps the group of zombies that are lumbering about under a fog-shrouded moon. There are also several finished pieces that feature samurai, gunslingers, and hard-boiled detectives. The book completes with several pages of nude sketches including one of Roca's favorite subjects, Vampirella. Included are several dominatrix-themed sketches with leather clad women bearing whips and ready for action.
In this book, Roca shows that he had the talent to work in any genre. There's no doubt that he would have gone on to even greater fame had it not been for his untimely passing at the relatively young age of 58. Thankfully his artistic legacy will live on.
