Customer Reviews:
Much more than a coffee table book.......2006-03-15
This is without a doubt the best book on the chateaux of the Loire Valley that I ever ever read (and I have read dozens). Given the superb quality of the pictures and the descriptions of the various chateaux, it is quite a bargain even at the full list price. Now that I think of it, this book is so enjoyable that the coffee table (or the night stand) would be an excellent place to keep it, not for show, but to have it handy to read whenever the mood arises.
definitely the nicest Loire Valley coffee table book.......2002-06-19
The book Chateaux of the Loire Valley by Jean-Marie Perouse De Montclos and photographer Robert Polidori is definitely the nicest coffee table book on sale about the beautiful castles of the Loire Valley. Besides being a superb wine growing region, the Loire River south of Paris offers a unique combination of beautiful landscapes and castles, which makes it one of France's most attractive regions. You should take at least a week or ten days to do a round trip. This book gives you an excellent idea of what to expect - or you cannot make it - what you are missing!
The Chateaux of the Loire Valley.......2001-12-30
This is a superb book and a great purchase. I was happily surprised at the excellent quality of the book itself. This chateaux collection is by Jean-Marie Perouse de Montclos author of 'Fontaineblue', which I had bought earlier and enjoyed thoroughly. Perouse de Montclos is obviously an authority in this so interesting and imposing a realm. 'Chateaux of the Loire Valley' is beautifully captured pictorially by Robert Polidori, this treat alone unfolds like some magical visual biography of France, and the world. I can't begin to tell you how much charm this book brings. The architectural relics and historical wonders are each detailed in the accompanying text. The history of Chinon, for example. There is a preface with the best chronology of the Kings of France I've ever seen. Never ending information and art photos about the castles, one better than the other. Including a profile of the unique Chenonceaux, with it's haunting echo of the fascinating Diane de Poitiers. With it's modest price this has to be one of the most satisfying books I've ever come across. You might also look up 'Fountainbleau' a literary and visual collection about the legendary French chateau by the same author.
Spectacular photography! Superior quality book!.......1999-09-19
We own this beautiful book. It is filled with high quality photographs, portraying the true beauty of the Lorie Valley. We are purchasing one more copy as a gift for a dear friend who traveled with us to Chenonceaux, and Chambord. Our personal photo's did not do justice to the true beauty of these castles.
This book will be on our coffee table, to remind us of the breathtaking experience we had, while being in the presence of such lovely architecture. I highly recommend this book!!
We have visited France in 1997, 1998, and 1999.
Book Description
This text presents the architecture, interiors, gardens and grounds of both the most important sites - Chambord, Blois, Chaumont, Amboise, Chenonceaux and others - as well as the lesser-known corners of the Loire valley.
Customer Reviews:
VALLEY OF THE KINGS OF FRANCE.......2006-04-07
This is a well researched book with crisp images. The Loire Valley is like a mystical place, with Fairy Tale palaces and a lovely country side, it's no wonder French kings chose this area to hold court. Most of the Chateaux have an Italian bent, since the Italians at the time were considered the most enlightened. No doubt Chambord is the most spectacular, it may have never held the significance Versailles held and it is not blessed with a Le Notre garden, but it is a site to behold, no other castle can touch it, I love the story that Leonardo may have designed the staircase while he was a long term guest of the King, either way it is simply stunning. I high recommend this wonderful book, on a breathtaking subject.
BEAUTIFUL!.......2000-01-09
As a Frenchwoman who spent last summer touring the Loire and its chateaux, I was a bit disappointed in this book. Had I wanted a book about French history, I would have bought a book about French history. I was looking for a lot more of the "now" and a lot less of the "then." The old black and white photos may delight some, but I found them a major disappointment. The chateaux, as they are today, are a glorious feast for the eyes; more up-to-date photos would have garnered this book five stars as far as I'm concerned. But all that aside, it is a lovely, over-sized coffee table book and one that should be "required reading" for anyone anticipating a visit to the Loire.
Transported through words and images.......1999-06-27
This book is an excellent investment. Gorgeous photography often depicts interiors as well as the exteriors of famous and also less well-known chateaux. Photographs (taken in various seasons of the year) present a large number of chateaux and castle complexes. The text is concise. Each chateau is described in a lively essay that is informative for architectural, historical, and travel details. A useful synopsis outlines a sight-seeing intinerary for those readers planning to visit the Loire Valley chateaux in person. Between the engaging text and beautiful images, reading (and re-reading) this book is a beautiful journey in itself.

Not as perfect as Michelin Red Guide but still a must!.......2000-03-07
Because France does not change that much, Michelin Green Guides do not change either. They still keep this handy pocket format that all other publishers copied. They still are very shy with pictures. They don't tell you everything you would expect from a french guide-book. Still, they tell you what is most important. You cannot make any mistake if you follow their advice. So bring this guide-book with you ... and buy the Eyewitness guide to get a more detailed view of our nice region.
Book Description
A sumptuous and definitive record of provincial France's world-famous jewel in the crown.
The magnificent chateaux that line the valley of northern France's Loire River, one of Europe's top tourist meccas, have been endlessly celebrated. But never has their timeless beauty been caught in color photographs whose extraordinary quality will make The Chateaux of the Loire as much a landmark as the castles themselves. These twenty-five range from medieval fortresses rising sheer above town streets, near Joan of Arc's Orleans, to grand Renaissance palaces and formal gardens built for pomps and pampered entertainments. Word and image match the drama of each chteau's past to the particularities of its architecture and its regional context, evoking history's parade of royalty and peasantry, merchants, and armies. The Chateaux of the Loire is a glorious gift for anyone who plans to see these wonders or, having once seen, can never forget them.
Customer Reviews:
Dissapointing at best.......2006-05-24
Usually I'm balanced when writing reviews but this book has so many weak points that one star is too much perhaps.
The idea of having very large photos printed on both pages is nice, but they are mixed with 2X2 inches photos (per page!) so there is a lot of space waste. There are plenty of huge page-consuming photos in which there is no castle! Just the riverbank at sunset and maybe some small village in the background! And when it comes to presenting beautiful castles, like Blois, there are only 3 photos (one small, presenting a brick patterns and other 2, totally irrelevant). For Chambord, another marvel, there are 5 photos: 3 of them are from the same angle, just at different times of day, one is at dusk and completely obscured by trees, and another one which I don't remember now. The marvelous staircase or the intricate details of terraces are not to be found. And then there is the text: superficial and completely insufficient.
Look somewhere else for a better presentation of the castles, you will learn nothing from this one.
Glorious! A 16:9 photographic book..........2000-01-29
I have seven books on the Loire Chateaux's. This one became my favourite! It has good texts and glorious photographs of the castles, including magnificent photos of Chambord (but of lesser known castles, also). It is a truly photographic book with panoramic photos! I would say that it is a 16:9 book that offers to the eye the pleasure of the Chateaux of the Loire. I strongly recommend it...

Book Description
One of the best-known and best-loved cars ever manufactured, the VW Bug was a symbol for decades of a casual lifestyle replete with breezy outings. But the 71 duotone photographs in this elegant paperbound volume offer a striking contrast to this populist impression. In 1953, photographer Peter Keetman spent a week at a Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg, Germany, emerging with a collection of remarkable images that, although rejected by the Volkswagen publicists, transform the parts of the popular car into works of abstract art gleaming stacks of hoods and fenders trace sinuous lines reminiscent of Edward Weston's seashells; bolts of cable look like exotic plants; sheet metal takes on a life of its own. Arranged in the order of the car's manufacturing process, accompanied by three essays on photography and Volkswagen production, Volkswagen: A Week at the Factory is a landmark in the history of industrial photography and a timeless look at a contemporary icon.
Customer Reviews:
No one cares.......2000-10-21
If you're even remotely interested in photography, you'll enjoy this book. You'll probably want to enlarge and frame many of the photos within. I bought a poster in a used record store taken from a page in this book, cropped a little on the edges, framed it and have a great wall hanging many people compliment and ask aboout. It didn't take long for me to check the fine print and determine from where it came. It had to be ordered as I'm sure It's not well-known. If this book were marketed however, it could target Volkswagen fanatics and, to a lesser degree, car nuts in general. It's fascinating and a little wierd to see the obsessive order in which all parts were stacked and stored. Also cool are the shots of seemingly endless rows of perfect, new VWs. Beetles and Buses in staight, orderly rows. My first car was a '68 beetle which I rolled, and later hit a deer in -the deer survived. Beetle ownership, however, is not needed to enjoy this book. And, if you're simply into displaying books and getting reactions, this represents the most bang-per-buck ever.

Book Description
In this fifth volume of the BONE saga, Fone and Smiley Bone strike out into the wilderness to return a lost rat creature cub to the mountains. It doesn't take long before they run smack into Rock Jaw, "Master of the Eastern Border," an enormous mountain lion with a none-too-friendly disposition. Life gets even more complicated when they befriend a group of baby animals who are being orphaned by rat creature attacks. Everything comes to a head in an earth-shattering clash between Rock Jaw and Kingdok, the leader of the rat creatures.
Customer Reviews:
more fun adventures.......2007-08-17
The Bone series just gets better with every volume. This volume follows the adventures of Fone and Smiley as they travel to the eastern end of the valley and the difficulties they encounter along the way. As in the previous volumes, the characters are wonderful and fun, and the plot takes many twists and turns, making for great reading. I love Bone!
Good Series -- Too Slow to Release.......2007-05-07
This is an alright series, somewhat enjoyable, but not as exciting as say Harry Potter. But, I have found that it has been a great way to get my kids interested in reading a bedtime story. I want the whole set, but Scholastic really needs to re-evaluate this release schedule of only one every six months. I bet they wind up losing a lot of their early audience that drops off after the first one or two.
My son loves these books.......2007-04-03
My seven-year old literally jumped for joy when we received book 5. He loves these books, and I had great difficulty not reading the entire book to him in one sitting. As it was, he looked at every page of the rest of the book. At bedtime, he went to sleep with the book beside him.
Amazing.......2007-03-11
I go to the bookstore and find a book that looks good by the cover. I enver read it. I am very picky about finding the "perfect" book. And i just found it back in early March of 2007. I was on a band trip [took 3 hours] and my friend pulled out the 3rd Bone series book. I was curious and started to read it. I got a little bit confused because I didnt read the 1st or 2nd one. The coloring is amazing! It must of took forever to make it! It has alot of adventure, and keeps you wondering. I finished the 3rd book [175 paages] before we even got to our destination. I couldnt put it down! It is such an AWSOME book! on March 9th I bought book 4 and 5... I read both of the books in 3 strait hours! I cant wait untill the 6th book comes out so I can start to read it!!! If your kid wants a exciting book.. This is the book for you!
Once Again, Great Color with a Hitch.......2007-02-04
The fifth and middle installment of the Bone series returns to the epic's beginnings, temporarily putting aside the Valley's violent political upheavals for a fast-paced and funny story of Fone Bone and Smiley Bone encountering an assortment of cute talking animals as they try to return a baby rat creature to its home in the mountains. On the way, they run into the opportunistic Rock Jaw, a giant mountain lion, and the two stupid rat creatures, who are still bent on baking Fone Bone into a quiche.
Probably the weakest of the Bone series, Rock Jaw: Master of the Eastern Border is nonetheless exciting and entertaining, and does contribute further development to the story's unfolding mysteries.
Steve Hamaker's coloration is again bright and pleasing, but once again he mixes up the two stupid rat creatures. Physically identical but with distinct personalities, the rats are color-coded (brown and purple) in the color version, but at one point Hamaker switches them, causing some puzzlement.

Book Description
In their most popular adventure since "The Great Cow Race", Fone Bone and Smiley strike out into the wilderness to return a lost rat creature cub to the mountains. They meet new allies - a scrappy young band of animal orphans (their parents were eaten by the stupid rat creatures) and a mysterious new foe: the formidable Rock Jaw, a giant mountain lion who fancies himself the master of the eastern border. Together they uncover the riddles of nature and before it is over, two great titans of the realm meet in an earth-shattering clash that will determine the fate of the land.

Great book.......2007-04-12
Do you like adventure books? If you do here's a book. Bone is a great book. Phoney Bone and his cousin Smiley Bone have a Rat creature cub. They go up to the Mountains and try to let it go. But they run into two other Rat creaatures. Will they make it away? Read to find out. Recommended for all cartoon lovers.
Finally, something my son will read!.......2007-02-02
We have been patiently awaiting the release of what appears to be another printing of this book. My 8 year old really doesn't like to read...except for the Bone Series. I haven't read them yet but my 12 year old likes them also. I'm just happy to find something he will willingly read. Thank you Jeff Smith!
Just a question..........2006-07-08
I have the other four Bone books and they are all in color and have Bone volume_ in the title. Is this book in the same series and in color or do I just have newer or older versions of these graphic novels. I love these books and i just want to know the answer to this question so I don't make a bad buy off Amazon.
Thanks...
A Great Chase!.......2005-06-14
"Rock Jaw: Master Of The Eastern Border" is the fifth volume in the nine volume Bone series, which makes it the halfway point. Once again Jeff Smith has done an excellent job of blending humor, mystery and fantasy to create a great tale of adventure
This volume is one great chase sequence, following Fone and Smiley in their adventure where they try to return Bartleby (The Rat Cub) to his people. Along the way they meet the two outcast Rat Creatures, Rock Jaw, an unusual group of orphans, the possum kids, and Kingdok and his Rat Creature followers. Smith is ingenious in mixing in dialogue that advances the overall adventure, with the action of the chase. We learn more about Thorn, the history of the area, and other aspects of the story, even though Thorn, Rose, Lucius, and Phoney don't appear at all.
