    Book Description

In 1927, the French designer Charlotte Perriand—then only twenty-four years old—won instant acclaim for her design for the "Bar sous le toit" (bar in the garret), shown at the Salon d'Automne in Paris. The project brought her to the attention of Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, who asked Perriand to join their atelier. There she was put in charge of the furniture and fittings program and worked on such legendary designs as the sculptural "chaise lounge," the "grand confort" chair, and the "fauteuil à dossier basculant" (sling chair).

Her autobiography, "Charlotte Perriand: A Life of Creation"—published in France in 1998—is the first mahor English-language volume on her career and personal history. In addition to her association with Le Corbusier, Perrieand recounts her experiences in Russia, the Far East, and South America; she also discusses the projects she worked on after leaving Le Corbusier's atelier in 1937, ranging from a vast ski resort at Les Arcs to the "espace thé" (tea area) in the UNESCO garden in Paris. Perriand's fascinating memoir is unique not only in its firsthand depiction of the goals and tenets of the heroic period of modern architecture but also in its portrayal of a century of life in Paris.

This book plays with reality, is beautiful, is provocative (in certain ways), and encourages revisits.

        5 out of 5 stars Simply a magical book!.......2007-04-16

So different, so wonderful, so thought-provoking. This book of photographs is amazing. Each photo tells a story, or many stories, or creates an emotion that's hard to pin down. This is a large bound book, of high quality. I'm astounded at the price. This is truly a book to keep for life. I took it to work, and people lined up to look at it, one co-worker offered to buy it from me for $10 more than I paid for it :) (no way!)

        5 out of 5 stars Photographic Art.......2007-03-30

Recently on PBS, I saw a small clip of the collaboration work of the photographer (who is also the subject in the photographs) and his painter wife. The artistic creation of staging and dark room manipulations were something no one produces but these two. Results are reminiscent of a strange dream or turn of the century photography of catastrophic Earth events. I had to find a book of their work. The first books I found were $300. but fortunately found a much better priced one. I not only wanted it for myself and friends, but also to hand it down to one of my grandkids. Thank you Mr/Mrs. ParkHarrison for your unusual vision and I hope to see your future productions.

        5 out of 5 stars The Architect's Brother.......2006-01-30

Wow. That's how I'm going to start this off. My first inkling was to give the book four stars, you know, seem objective to the reader, maybe have a bigger influence. The truth is objectivity has nothing to do with this book. It is full of magic, suprise, wonder: nothing but true subjectivity. That is where its beauty lies, like a receiving a small bit of mail from an unknown sender, each page is a tale for you to tell, as well as ParkeHarrison. By far my favorite photography book, second only to Rocky Schenk, Photographs. Highly Recommended, also beautifully bound and LARGE. Take it from this poor college student, well worth the money.

        5 out of 5 stars Surprised.......2005-12-17

This is one of the weirdest photography books I have ever read...and enjoyed looking!

The author drives the reader through an interesting dream-like world created meticulously just for the shots in this book.

All these stupendous images generate lots of meditations and new ideas not only related to the topic of photography but to the way we experience life.

$39.95 hardcover 1-58685-053-9 8 x 10 in, 160 pp, 130 Color Photographs, 30 Black & White Photographs, Rights: W, Design/Biography Stickley is a name synonymous with Arts & Crafts style in America. The five Stickley brothers-Gustav, Albert, Leopold, John George, and Charles-were fully engaged in the furniture industry around the turn of the twentieth century and had a huge impact on America's statement of style. But were any one of them a style maker? Gustav Stickley claimed that he had established an American style. Albert Stickley contradicted that claim, and Leopold made his own statement during his final years. Here, for the first time, the representative photographs and ideas of all the brothers' work appear together in one volume, to compare and contrast, so that readers might make their own evaluations. Michael and Jill Thomas-Clark examine each brother's work and its relation to the quest for an American style, placing particular emphasis on the early years and transitional moments. The authors draw a definitive conclusion, and it is an answer certainly worth reading, seeing, and thinking about. Dr. Michael E. Clark is an associate professor at Elmira College in the Fine Arts Department, and Jill Thomas-Clark is a registrar for the Corning Museum of Glass. Their work has appeared in Style 1900: The Journal of the Arts and Crafts Movement. They live in upstate New York.

            Book Description

A soldier and statesman for the ages, the Duke of Wellington is a towering figure in world history. John Severn now offers a fresh look at the man born Arthur Wellesley to show that his career was very much a family affair, a lifelong series of interactions with his brothers and their common Anglo-Irish heritage. The untold story of a great family drama, Architects of Empire paints a new picture of the era through the collective biography of Wellesley and his siblings.

Whereas other historians have minimized the importance of family ties, Severn provides an unusually nuanced understanding of the Duke of Wellington. Architects of Empire casts his career in a new light--one that will surprise those who believe they already know the man.

            Product Description

Ray Charles (1930-2004) led one of the most extraordinary lives of any popular musician. In Brother Ray, he reveals his story unsparingly, from the chronicle of his musical development to his heroin addiction to his tangled romantic life. Overcoming poverty, blindness, the loss of his parents, and the pervasive racism of the era, Ray Charles was acclaimed worldwide as a genius by the age of thirty-two. By combining the influences of gospel, jazz, blues, and country music, he invented, almost single-handedly, what became known as “soul.” And throughout a career spanning more than a half century, Ray Charles remained in complete control of his life and his music, allowing nobody to tell him what he could or couldn’t do.

"The most clear-eyed and honest celebrity autobiography I've read."

That back cover blurb, by somebody famous I've never heard of, is exactly right, including some details I'd probably omit from my own autobiography. What makes this book wonderful is, as you'd expect, Ray's voice. You've heard it in his music, and now you can read it in his book. I highly recommend it.

            5 out of 5 stars "Don't change a goddamn word!".......2006-05-05

David Ritz is a lucky man. In the course of his life he wrote autobiographies for Soul legends as Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and Ray Charles. These bios were the result of long and intimate conversations, a fan boy's dream come true. All these autobiographies are interesting not only for the lives they portray but also for the era they take place in. At the time these artists were at the height of there career America was changing. During the sixties when the civil rights movement reached its peak they had there biggest selling records and were pushing the boundaries of the genre they were operating in.

It is often argued that Ray Charles and artist like him played an important part in the civil rights movement. His records crossed over from R&B to Pop, allowing the white middleclass teenagers to be introduced to Black culture. Not everybody had the patience or commitment to go to a civil rights rally; everybody can enjoy a good piece of music. Not only did Ray cross over he wrote some new rules as well. Ray was one of the first to combine Jazz, Soul and Country, appealing to a very broad audience of all colors and dominations. Ray was as much appreciated by the college kids up north and the hillbillies down south. Ray integrated concerts and gave the black man a human face, which at the time it was sadly lacking in mainstream white America.

David Ritz describes his conversations as some of the most frank yet closed he's had throughout his career. Ray never left out the sordid details of his life; the drugs and infidelity is vividly portrait. All of it written down in raw language, Ray liked to swear! At times you forget Ray is blind as he describes the women in his life, "Man the things I've seen" he even exclaims when he talks about his nights of sex on the road. Yet he also found Ray lacking the capability to reflect on the why's in his life. In contrast to Marvin Gaye who thoroughly analyzed himself, Ray seemed to ride the current, act on instinct and gut, without asking why he made the decisions he made. We find Ray Charles claiming that he did drugs, drugs never did him. Ray tells us his music comes from his Soul, he sang it as he felt it. Inevitably it was his unwillingness or unable ness to reflect that made him such a robust performer. When David Ritz asked Ray a couple of years later if he wanted some revisions for a reprint Ray exclaimed "Don't change a goddamn word!".

4 out of 5 stars The Genius of Soul Recounts His Life--In His Own Style.......2006-04-07

This is a very real, sometimes funny, sometimes bitter, sometimes poignant memoir from The Genius of Soul himself, of the first 45 or so years of his life. His frank, no-holds-barred style, frequent use of strong language, and free-living attitude toward drugs and sex may put some people off; but the book is well worth reading for his candid account of his upbringing influenced by two strong and loving women, learning to be independent and deal with his disability without self-pity, and his rise in the music business to a hugely successful career. I found it refreshing and enjoyable, because Ray put himself out to readers just the way he was-faults, charms, humor, strong feelings and powerful talent-and his story makes us want to remember what a blessing he was to the world. I wish he had written a follow-up of his later life.

            4 out of 5 stars interesting.......2006-04-05

I read this book after the movie "Ray" came out. I enjoyed the book a lot, but found there were a few things that he talks about that were portrayed differently in the movie, so I wondered which were true. I was a little surprised at how honest he is in the book about his womanizing and lack of interest in birth control or whether his casual encounters would result in contracting STD's. He was an amazing man and musician, and I admire his talent, but was a little disappointed at his lack of morals in a lot of cases. I wonder how his dear mama would have felt about it, if she had lived to see his adult life. The book is a great read and very insightful into Ray Charles's life, he leaves no stone unturned.

                Book Description

In this interdisciplinary book, Keala Jewell reunites Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978) with his brother, Alberto Savinio (1891-1952), a prolific writer and painter who has been kept at the margins of the discussion of surrealism and, more generally, the culture politics of twentieth-century Italy. Yet as Jewell demonstrates, the brothers worked together during their formative years in Munich and Paris and always shared, on the one hand, a drive to salvage Mediterranean myth and history and, on the other, a deep involvement with art's power to shape cultural identity and authority.

Rather than looking for a key to unlock the secrets of the brothers' recurrent use of dislocated spaces and bizarre hybrid figures, Jewell focuses on assessing the issues of identity and mastery put at stake in the haunting enigmas that characterize their paintings and writings. Deeply impressed by Nietzsche, she argues, they believed the "human" is inherently unstable and must be constantly "rewoven" with analogies and metaphors seized from empowering states of being.

Jewell's approach to the de Chirico brothers breaks new ground, not only because it brings them together as artists and writers but also because it sets the brothers within the context of myth, history, and Italian culture politics, instead of French surrealism and its aesthetic and psychoanalytic theories. Further, Jewell's strong readings of little-known paintings and notoriously difficult texts like Giorgio de Chirico's Ebdòmero will expand and diversify the sources used in modernist studies.

                  Book Description

Disney's animated trailblazing, Dostoyevsky's philosophical neuroses, Hendrix's electric haze, Hitchcock's masterful manipulation, Frida Kahlo's scarifying portraits, Van Gogh's vigorous color, and Virginia Woolf's modern feminism: this multicultural reference tool examines 200 artists, writers, and musicians from around the world. Detailed biographical essays place them in a broad historical context, showing how their luminous achievements influenced and guided contemporary and future generations, shaped the internal and external perceptions of their craft, and met the sensibilities of their audience.
