5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2005-11-24

I wish I had of read this book before spending 4 years at art school and not learning half of what is taught within its pages. This book is for anyone who paints, especially oil painters. It teaches you how paints are made, what makes a good paint and how to use them effectively. Having a knowledge of your materials is critical for successful painting. I found this book at the library but I am now going to buy it to have as a handy reference.

5 out of 5 stars A must.......2004-05-11

No doubt a 5 stars. If you are ever interested in color, you must read and understand this book.

5 out of 5 stars An Inside Look into Pigments and Paints.......2002-01-16

For anyone who has ever wondered how modern artists paints and the pigments and binders for various media are made this is an excellent book. The chapters and photos showing how various kinds of artists paint are made from start to finish is very enlightening. For example, I assumed acrylics were manufactured similarly to oils and watercolors. However, due to the nature of the acrylic polymer itself a different manufacturing process must be employed.

Also, one of the more fascinating chapters in the book is on the pigments themselves. After reading this chapter I added to my color palette many new modern pigments. In many cases I use them exclusively for a painting. Until reading this book I did not realize just how incredibly lightfast, permanent and resistant to varying weather conditions these new pigments really are. Thank you, Auto Industry for giving artists all these great new pigments! Books like this will help get the word out that these new pigments really are superior to many traditional ones. The Rennaissance masters would have loved to have access to the colors artists have available today. For example, for my orange colors I now often use a benzimidazolone, an isoindoline and a pyrole. The reds and browns are now quinacridones and pyroles (although I still use red, orange and yellow cadmiums on occasion). My most frequently used yellows are azo and hansa. One of my favorite blues is an anthraquinone. Practically the only color on artist palettes that has not benefitted from auto industry pigment research is white. Titanium white significantly compromises the lightfastness of any color it is mixed with. As for the pigments I mentioned above many have transparent qualities while others are very opaque. This book explores how you can exploit each of these new pigments' qualities to add new dimensions to your artwork. And you may want to consider trying some of the secondary colors because they have qualities that might not be available from a mixed secondary.

Later chapters in the book discuss the binder and mediums for various types of paints such as oils, watercolors and acrylics. One of the last chapters examines "painting" with computer programs such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. The final chapter covers health and safety issues. Get this book. It will open your eyes to the wonderful possibilities of today's pigments and paints.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Big Budget, Oddly Cold.......2004-08-05

While technically skillful, the work of Howard Schatz on the whole, and especially in "Body Knots" often seems to betray a somewhat cruel "use-factor" in regards the human beings that are his subjects. Going back as far as his portraits of successful women in the San Francisco Bay area, one portrait symbolically blinded the sitter with reflections on the lenses of her glasses. For follow-up, Mr. Schatz attempted to drown the San Francisco Ballet Company, and now he presents us with human beings decapitated, covered in gimmick-ridden colors or worse, and appearing more like teeth than human. While great art often attacks the human figure to reveal frailty and psychological depth (De Kooning, Bacon...), Mr. Schatz's work, in this reviewer's opinion, while occassionaly producing a graphically stunning image, only touches on the human soul with his photographs of young children, whose unrepressable energy for life perhaps could not be covered over, with technique or artifice.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2000-08-07

I love Howard Schatz photography. He has created memorable imagry with his "Passion and Line" and "Water Dance" books. "Body Knots" is an evolution of "Pool Light" which was a sequel to "Water Dance". But not all evolution is happy or successful.

This book is far too gimmicky for my taste and I think Mr.Schatz is capable of far more creative imagry than this. How many of these images will appear in Madison Ave. advertising over the next year? Or is that the real goal here? One wonders. Perhaps if Mr.Schatz would have remained in California rather than moving to New York his artistic goals would not have been seduced by the scent of advertising contracts. I don't begrudge an artist trying to earn money but Mr.Schatz was a very successful surgeon before taking up lenswork full time--he isn't a starving artist.

What strikes me about "Body Knots" is that it is more a graphic arts presentation than it is fine art photography. Mr. Schatz, please go back and look at "Passion and Line" and "Water Dance". You created something wonderful there. Remember your motives?

5 out of 5 stars Stunning Visual Images.......2000-06-26

If you're standing in a bookstore with a copy of Howard Schatz' new Body Knots in your hand, turn to Knot No. 184 near the end of the book. This image, one of my favorites, is a sly, humorous, enchanting image. Now you're hooked, right? But still not sure if you want to purchase the book ? Then turn to Knot 114 near the middle. This glorious, ingenious, repetition of the human form, part microscopic investigation, part seductive image, provides another reason to believe that Schatz is one of the most interesting, original, creative photographers at work today. In a stunning series of books, covering such themes as homelessness and the endlessly seductive charms of the human body, Schatz has opened our eyes to new ways of looking at the possibilities of photography. Body Knots, one of his most creative works, is a book for anyone who wants to be an artist, who wants to understand spatial possibilities, and, especially, wants to laugh over the imaginative limits of form and vision. This is one of those books that will make you look at the world differently.

5 out of 5 stars Body Knots is a must have for photo & art fans.......2000-06-05

Today I was able to flip through a copy of the new photo book, "Body Knots" by Howard Schatz the photographer whose previous book, "Pool Light" is one of the most daring and beautiful photography books I have ever seen.

Most photographers would continue treading down the same artistic path, but not Howard Schatz aparently.

Body Knots is a collection of photos of humans entwined to make all sorts of puzzling shapes and images in the most beautiful color schemes and light.

There are collages of these strange, ambiguously naked images that create landscapes of the most surreal nature.

You don't even realize that you are staring at multicolored nudes entangled. The images seem more like alien shapes.

This is a coffee table book that people will flip through repeatedly and enjoy in a unique manner with each viewing.

Body Knots is a fun, and beautiful book that celebrates the human body with humor and new perceptions and challenges the viewer to rethink how they see things.

I know what I am giving as a gift for the rest of this year.

5 out of 5 stars The knot of time.......2007-05-14

I have travelled with this book over countless oceans and many mountains. I have a first edition, bought in Bristol around 1988. It is an old friend, the pages are torn, I highlighted parts that seem applicable to myself and to the people around me. It encouraged me to look more deeply, supported a greater awareness and understanding of and empowered me to act in places I shyed away from. This would be the book that I would take away to my desert island. Everytime I read a section, I learn something else.
It is insightful, wise, true, intelligent and inspiring. It has been in my keep for nearly 20 years.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books.......2000-04-20

The Knot of Time is subtitled: Astrology and the Female Experience but I think it transcends that implied limitation. The writing is universal in tone although the writers defer to the feminine pronouns. Authors Lindsay River and Sally Gillespie discuss Astrology as "not only a science for the study of planetary movements but also an art of interpretation and a philosophy, a system of understanding both the cosmos and the individual self."

The book contains separate chapters on astrological theory, history, and the planets, signs and houses and ends with aspects and synthesis. References are included at the end of each chapter and there is a great bibliography at the end of the book that could keep you busy reading for a couple of years. Also included (one of my favorite things to see in a reference book) is an index.

One of the things I like personally about this book is that the writers have really explored the historical nature of the astrological language to give you more than the cookbook descriptions that others provide. In Virgo, they discuss the mythology of Demeter, Hygeia and the Virgin Mary. In Scorpio, they review the mythology of Pluto and Inanna. The use of myth and poetic imagery really helps one to understand the energy inherent in the astrological symbols rather than trying to distill a personality typology from a sign.

The authors describe the Taurean personality as, "Touched by the warm sensuality of the flower Goddess, and those born in this astrological month have some of her easy grace and luxurious delight in the physical."

"Luxurious Taurus can be lazy, but there is another side of her personality: committed, persevering and determined... Others who are less practical often dismiss her as materialistic, but fail to understand that decisions about money are a way for her to make important choices about what she does value and provide her with a path to self-knowledge."

Book Description

Threads, Knots, Tapestries reveals the way our dreaming expresses and reflects our deep interpersonal and environmental interconnectivity…. Drawing upon her decades of Jungian analytic practice, and many years of pioneering in dream groups, Castleman weaves a rich tapestry of dream threads which shows us how we are dreaming with and for each other. Her method is that of a storyteller telling the stories of people, their dreams, the stories of shamans, the stories of individuals suffering from cancer, love entanglements, and most delightfully, stories which show how dreams are woven together with communal life in other cultures, as well as in our own.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Mysterious Connections in Dreams.......2005-06-02

Mystery is at the heart of synchronicity. It is the unknown, that which puzzles us and defies our rational approach to reality. ~Tess Castleman

Tess Castleman walks were many of us may fear to tread. When you start to tell people your dreams you enter a new level of intimacy and can reveal everything from your deepest fantasies to your darkest fears. Dreams seem to be a good place to live out all our unattainable fantasies, like flying.

Tess Castleman cautions against taking books of dream symbols too seriously and her advice is very relevant if you are looking to analyze your own dreams. The color red could have many interpretations (power, anger or sexual experience) and elements in your dream could even solve problems in daily life.

The author believes our dreams are often more complex than they first appear. She unveils the mysteries in dreams on a daily basis and enters one of the most intimate places in the human psyche. Here our fears and desires are revealed in metaphors, feelings, images and symbols only we may understand.

Jung is mentioned quite often and there are discussions about the animus and anima. There is also a list of an individual psyche that includes the Persona, Ego, Complexes, Shadow, Anima/Animus, Tribal Field, Archetypes, The Self, Collective Unconscious.

The Tribal Field helps to explain synchronicity, while archetypes can help us understand our actions through universal images.

"The tribal of communal field, one's inner desire, the movement of the Self, does not reveal itself in drop-dead-jaw-agape synchronistic phenomena alone. It may just as likely emerge as a mild, quiet, connecting link, like the notes in a melody that flow one into the next in a chain or matrix of meaning and music." ~Tess Castleman

One interesting aspect of dreams is that when you talk about specific types of dreams with friends, you might start to have similar dreams or even induce dreams where someone has not been dreaming that much before or at least has not been remembering details of their dreams.

I love talking about dreams and analyzing my own dreams because I think they give us clues to how we are living our life, our destiny and our most secret and often hidden desires. For some reason, all my dreams lately have been about traveling to other planets and I think that might be symbolic of some change in my life in the near future. Blue has been a current theme. Just for fun, I will sometimes go online and type in things like "What does the color blue mean in dreams?" Some of the answers make perfect sense.

Dreams can be mysterious and exciting, but what happens in the day in regards to synchronicity can also be quite entertaining. Like, I am still trying to figure out why everything one of my friends talks about instantly appears in movies I'm watching.

Threads, Knots, Tapestries will be especially helpful to anyone who wants to join or start a dream group. If you are not participating in a dream group, the information may encourage you to analyze your dreams in more depth. What you dream could be important for a friend or relative or maybe even the entire world.

5 out of 5 stars Transpersonal Connections for Artist.......2004-06-17

Thank you for a job well done! Written in a conversational tone, sharing personal anecdotes of years of dream groups, Castleman reminded me we are never alone in our endeavors. As an artist I spend most of my time alone in the studio, but the time in altered states of consciousness, similar to dreaming, that can come about when emersed in the process of art work, puts me into the company of the collective where eagles soar.

5 out of 5 stars Sifting through stories, myths, and beliefs about dreams.......2004-04-13

Threads, Knots, Tapestries: How A Tribal Connection Is Revealed Through Dreams And Syncronicities by Tess Castleman (a Zurich trained Diplomate Jungian Analyst), focuses upon "Dream Groups", and what Jungian analysis has to say about revealing and interpreting human psychology through the examination of unconscious messages. Sifting through stories, myths, and beliefs about dreams in order to better explore just what dreams can tell us about internal and external worlds alike, Threads, Knights, Tapestries is a superbly written and deftly presented analysis which is most especially recommended reading for student of Jungian psychology and psychoanalysis.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Reading.......2004-03-27

Is it possible that our dreams affect others and the dreams of others affect ours? Is there some kind of collective dream world that we all share in and that through it we affect each other? These are the kind of questions author Tess Castleman, a Jungian Analyst based out of Dallas, Texas, examines in her book "Threads, Knots, Tapestries". Her primary area of interest and expertise is the use of dream groups. After years of studying these groups she now shares her experience and how common dream threads demonstrate our interconnectedness with each other.

Some schools of psychology teach that all the characters of your dream are just different parts of yourself. Is it possible that there are times when a dream is much more than this? Tess Castleman examines situations where it appears there is some type of communal dreaming occurring. Apparently there is some sort of collective dream world that we can all access and do at times. Going one step further she shows how we may be interacting not only other people, but also with our environment itself, or even with other cultures.

"Threads, Knots, Tapestries" is a fascinating trip into the realm of possibilities and how closely we may all be bound together in the web of life.

    Book Description

Dante and the Knot of Body and Soul seeks to evaluate in just measure the material, bodily, erotic, and aesthetic aspects of the intellectual foundations of the Commedia and explore the idea of embodied spirit and its poetic consequences in Dante's worldmaking poem. Bodies, be they ghostly, demonic, fleshly, or angelic, are tied up in both literal and figurative knots because of their unstable ontology, an ontology that they share with human language. In each chapter, Marianne Shapiro addresses the interconnections between poetic speech and embodied spirit as they develop over the course of the Commedia's three canticles. Instead of regarding Dante as an Olympian poet, her approach emphasizes process, for even a masterpiece may conceal adjustments and shifts in strategy as part of its structure. While much current scholarship has set out to recover the specifically literary dimensions of Dante's enterprise by prising them away from the overriding theological concerns, this work is intended to bring the two together in an integrated vision.

      Product Description

The Double Bowline Knot is a powerful and timely message derived from a consideration of the unfathomable intelligence reflected in the creation of the human body and the spiritual reason for its existence. The author progresses from a technical description of human anatomical parts and systems, and the incomprehensible intelligence reflected in their evolution, to the nonphysical nature of man as indicated by the atomic structure of his physical body. He alludes to physical reality as existing only in a virtual state and that true existence is on a spiritual plane. Therefore, the development of spiritual faith is a necessary step toward reconciling our physical existence with a source of infinite wisdom, a supreme being, which we call God, and that development of spiritual faith could well be the ultimate purpose of our being. The author likens the acquisition of spiritual faith to learning to tie a double bowline knot.

I was impressed with how the book is organized. The 10 "Infusers" gave me stepping stones to guide me to the success I deserve. Mr. Howards "Time-Out" pages helped reinforce important lessons and made them practical for me! I am now removing the barriers that block my dreams!!! Thank you Ty Howard for caring enough to help me untie the knots that tie up my life!
